Flash Marriage: He is a Wife-pampering Addict

Chapter 1192: You misunderstand, I wasn’t asking you out.

Bai Yiyi chuckled lightly, “Alright then, I’ll leave this matter in your hands.”

“Okay.” Wen Jin smiled, then turned her head to address Deputy Bureau Wu, “Deputy Bureau Wu, the laboratory is up ahead, and over there is the workshop. We’ll visit the laboratory first, and then head to the workshop after. This way, please.”

Deputy Bureau Wu responded with a smile, his gaze sweeping over Wen Jin and Bai Yiyi before he said to Zhang Siming, “Siming, since Miss Bai is busy, you can only blame your bad luck. When Bai Yiyi has some time, you can ask her out for a meal then. Don’t look so downcast.”

The cunning Deputy Bureau Wu, having heard Wen Jin and Bai Yiyi’s conversation, along with the way they looked at each other while speaking, sensed something subtle in their expressions.

Although Zhang Siming was disappointed, he did not press Bai Yiyi any further.

At noon, Wen Jin took them to Yi Pin Xuan Pavilion for lunch. After the meal and seeing them off, she returned to the company with Bai Yiyi.

“How come I didn’t know about tonight’s charity gala and tomorrow’s business trip?”

In the back seat of the business car, Bai Yiyi leaned slightly to the side, looking up at Wen Jin sitting beside her.

Wen Jin sat back in his seat, casually crossing his leg, his hand with distinct knuckles holding a cellphone. Hearing Bai Yiyi’s words, he turned to glance at her, “You’re the secretary. If you don’t know about it, how could there be such a thing?”

“Ah?” Bai Yiyi’s eyes widened in astonishment, “So you mean, that was all made up on the spot?”

“Mhm.”

Wen Jin nodded, a smile appearing on his handsome face.

Bai Yiyi rolled her eyes, feigning complaint, “You made me worry for two hours. I even thought I had made a mistake at work. The business trip could be a spur-of-the-moment decision, but a charity event couldn’t possibly be a last-minute plan too.”

“If there was one, it would indeed be a last-minute decision by me.”

Wen Jin looked at Bai Yiyi, calmly saying, “That Zhang Siming, he’s the guy you went on a blind date with last week?”

“Yes, that’s him.” Bai Yiyi replied indifferently.

“Yiyi, are you planning to date him, to have him be Tongtong’s stepfather?”

“Stepfather, that term just sounds unpleasant.” Bai Yiyi frowned, pondering before adding, “I’ve never thought about having him be Tongtong’s stepfather, nor have I considered dating him. That was something my mother cooked up. I haven’t received any calls from Zhang Siming these past few days; I thought he had given up.”

“I think you and Zhang Siming don’t suit each other.” Wen Jin said it casually, yet Bai Yiyi chuckled, curiously asking, “Why do you say that?”

“You’re outgoing, but Zhang Siming is too old-fashioned. Just by looking at him, you can tell that he’s the type who doesn’t talk much and lacks wit, humor, and romance. He’s a complete nerd.”

Wen Jin listed Zhang Siming’s shortcomings.

Bai Yiyi laughed heartily, “President Wen, I didn’t expect you to be a face-reader, and so gossipy, at that. Is Zhang Siming as bad as you describe?”

“Could it be that you think he’s better than Ah Kai?” Wen Jin retorted with a mysterious smile at the corner of his mouth.

Bai Yiyi immediately frowned, “Why bring up Gu Kai? But since you mentioned it, I’ll share my opinion. I think Zhang Siming is at least more polite than Gu Kai.”

“That’s just a facade. Zhang Siming isn’t polite; he’s insecure.” Wen Jin paused slightly before continuing, “You’re right to reject his invitation. Yiyi, if you really date Zhang Siming or even take it further, you’ll surely regret it. You won’t feel that he has any advantages over Ah Kai.”

“Isn’t that an exaggeration? You make it sound like the man is worthless. It might not be bad to find a reliable guy.”

Bai Yiyi didn’t really intend to date Zhang Siming, it’s just that when Wen Jin compared Zhang Siming to Gu Kai, her instinct was to dispute Gu Kai’s merits.

Wen Jin shook his head, saying seriously, “It’s not that virtuous men are bad, but Zhang Siming isn’t right for you. He already shows his insecurity around you, and if you were with him, that sense of insecurity would only intensify. Over time, his insecurity could turn into extremism, possessiveness, and jealousy, among other things.”

“President Wen, that sounds terrifying.”

Bai Yiyi shuddered faintly, a hint of fear flickering in her eyes.

She already didn’t believe in marriage nor men. With Wen Jin’s analysis, the idea of remaining single for life reemerged in her mind.

Wen Jin smiled gently, explaining, “I’m not trying to scare you, nor am I saying all men are like that. I’m just analyzing based on Zhang Siming’s personality and the gap between you two, and the potential issues if you were together.”

“So you mean, if I find a man who’s better than me in every aspect, that would work?” Bai Yiyi pondered and asked again.

Wen Jin held up a finger, shaking it in front of her.

“Not even that?” Bai Yiyi laughed, “Then I should find a man who’s on my level.”

“Yiyi, between people, it’s all about fate. Marriage isn’t shopping; you have to consider not just yourself, but also Tongtong. Of course, I’m not suggesting that you should stay single for Tongtong’s sake. Honestly, I don’t think being single all your life is for the best for Tongtong.”

Wen Jin’s brows slightly knit together, “Tongtong needs motherly love, and fatherly love too.”

“She has a father. Gu Kai may not be much, but he truly cares for Tongtong.” Bai Yiyi wasn’t one to ignore right and wrong; she saw how good Gu Kai was to Tongtong.

The corners of Wen Jin’s mouth curled into a smile, “If Ah Kai is good to Tongtong, then why bother trying to find her a stepfather?”

Bai Yiyi’s face changed dramatically, feigning fear as she spoke, “President Wen, please spare me. Don’t joke about me with Gu Kai. Even if I stay single for a lifetime, there can’t be anything between Gu Kai and me.”

Speak of the devil, and he shall appear.

Bai Yiyi pulled out her phone, saw the caller’s name, and immediately furrowed her brows. Wen Jin caught a glimpse of her phone’s screen, and the smile on his lips deepened.

“Hello!”

Bai Yiyi pressed the answer button, her voice cold.

“I’m not working overtime tonight. I’ll take Tongtong out for dinner, and you should come too. Decide what you want to eat, and let me know which restaurant to book.”

Over the phone came Gu Kai’s cheery and resonant voice, which sounded like he was in a great mood.

Bai Yiyi pursed her lips, “No need. You take Tongtong out, I won’t go.”

She didn’t want to end up arguing with him in front of Tongtong after just a few words.

“Don’t you know Tongtong likes to have both her dad and mom with her? Bai Yiyi, what are you putting on airs for? I’ve finally freed up an evening, and you still refuse.”

“It’s Tongtong that you need to accompany, not me. Why can’t I refuse?” Bai Yiyi just couldn’t stand the condescending tone Gu Kai used when speaking with her.

“Are you misunderstanding something?”

There was a few seconds of silence on the phone, and when Gu Kai spoke again, there was a trace of confusion in his voice.

Bai Yiyi was puzzled, “What am I misunderstanding?”

“Misunderstanding that I am asking you out!” Gu Kai’s mocking words pierced her ears, and Bai Yiyi’s inner ire was instantly stirred.
