Abandoned Woman Busy Farming

Chapter 2297: Chapter 2296: This Is an Illness—It Needs Treatment!

Du Zhongshu fainted and couldn’t speak, while the steward was dumbfounded. After a while, he said, ”But, but my lord specifically asked to see Bai the healer.”

”It’s late at night! Just wait until I wake him up, and then you all quickly leave. If you want to see her, send a message during the day.” Gao Zhou said irritably.

Daring to covet his daughter-in-law is definitely an issue that needs fixing! Later, he would definitely give this Du Zhongshu a good ’treatment’!

The steward tried to speak further, but Gao Zhou gave him a glare, ”Your lord’s life is hanging by a thread, and you’re dawdling about doing what? Don’t you believe in my Medical Saint’s medical skills?”

”No, no.” The steward broke out in a cold sweat. The lord hadn’t explained how to handle this situation. What was he supposed to say?

Gao Zhou had already taken Du Zhongshu’s pulse and confirmed that it was indeed a recurrence of internal injuries, though not too severe.

He took out the silver needle and quickly gave Du Zhongshu a few pricks. Naturally, he wouldn’t ruin his own reputation; the internal injury had to be treated. However, he added one more needle to a particularly painful acupuncture point, and sure enough, Du Zhongshu couldn’t bear the pain and woke up.

”What happened to me? Where’s Ruozhu?” Du Zhongshu looked around confused.

Gao Zhou sneered, ”Ruozhu is not seeing guests. As the Medical Saint, am I not able to treat you?”

Du Zhongshu’s eyes revealed regret. How had he overlooked this Medical Saint, and when had he returned to the capital?

”Alright, now that you’re awake, hurry up and leave. Don’t delay my rest.” Gao Zhou shouted loudly, hoping people would notice that it was him who treated Du Zhongshu.

Du Zhongshu frowned slightly. Did this mean his plan for tonight was all for naught?

”Can I see Ruozhu? I just want to say a couple of words to her, I beg you.” He appeared particularly pitiful. If Gao Zhou didn’t know the truth, he might have been moved by his ’loving devotion.’

”You can send a message during the day. This is not proper etiquette. Even if you’re a meritorious figure and awarded a noble title by the emperor, it doesn’t give you the right to bully others.” Gao Zhou said loudly.

Bai Ruozhu and Jiang Yichun were hiding not far from the main gate. Bai Ruozhu secretly gave Jiang Yichun a thumbs-up gesture. Gao Zhou spoke well, turning Du Zhongshu’s ’persistent affection’ into ’abuse of power.’

It goes to show that the Chinese language is profound, and those who can speak well have an advantage.

”Medical Saint, you’ve misunderstood. I didn’t mean anything else, I just wanted to...” Du Zhongshu spoke weakly, finally sighing heavily, ”Forget it, it’s my foolish obsession.”

Gao Zhou smiled broadly, ”It’s good that you’ve come to your senses. My adopted daughter and Xiaojiang are deeply in love; they even have three children. We don’t want any unnecessary disturbances from others. Young man, don’t do foolish things anymore.”

He stressed the words ”foolish things” with extra emphasis. Du Zhongshu felt a burst of anger, tasting a bitterness in his mouth again, but he swallowed it back down with a gritted jaw.

”What the Medical Saint says is right. Then I will take my leave.” Du Zhongshu said and boarded the horse carriage nearby.

Gao Zhou unhappily glanced at his back, muttering, ”No real background, doesn’t even have a servant to attend. Saved his life, and he doesn’t even know how to say thanks; doesn’t understand basic manners, not even as good as ordinary officials in the capital.”

Though his voice wasn’t loud, it was enough for Du Zhongshu to hear, angering him so much that his fists clenched audibly. He wished to get off and confront him but held back.

If he got off now, he would just be proving the accusation of bullying with power.

When he had left, Gao Zhou turned back into the residence, loudly instructing the gatekeeper, ”Close the doors properly. Don’t let any stray cats or dogs in. Can’t a person get some sleep at night?”

The gatekeeper chuckled, ”Yes, Medical Saint, I’ve got it.”

Once the door was closed, Bai Ruozhu and Jiang Yichun came forward, naturally saying a lot of good things. Waking up the elder in the middle of the night was indeed a fault.

”Father, sorry to trouble you. At your age, you still have to handle situations for us.” Jiang Yichun said.

Gao Zhou glared, ”What do you mean, at my age?”

Bai Ruozhu quickly tugged on Jiang Yichun’s sleeve, explaining, ”He didn’t mean that; we were just remorseful for making our elder work hard, which is our unfilial behavior.”

Gao Zhou finally grunted two noises and returned to his room to sleep.

”Did he eat gunpowder? Why such a big temper?” Jiang Yichun awkwardly touched his nose. Had he said something wrong?

”That’s called waking up on the wrong side. Can’t you tell?” Bai Ruozhu laughed.

”What’s my fate to have a wife who wakes up grumpy and a father just the same? I guess I have to be the one with a good temper.” Jiang Yichun shook his head helplessly.

Bai Ruozhu pulled him back to their room, ”Go to sleep quickly; don’t let others hear and laugh their heads off. Just ask around who would say that Lord Jiang has a good temper.”

Jiang Yichun was taken aback; was his reputation really that bad?

Early the next morning, Jiang Yichun and Bai Zepei went out to attend to their work while Bai Ruozhu sat at breakfast with Si Yihuan, Fo Lanying, and Yizi, and they all took turns criticizing Du Zhongshu.

”A man who can be so despicable really isn’t worth it. He’d better have challenged you to a duel and fought it out viciously.” Fo Lanying said disdainfully.

”Even in a duel, he wouldn’t be a match for our master.” Yizi said proudly.

”Who knows if he’ll calm down this time? It’s really annoying. Someone who used to be a plaything for the Grand Princess of Anguo became a strategist for the Yueqiu Tribe and was even granted a noble title. It’s such an injustice.” Si Yihuan complained.

Bai Ruozhu’s eyes twinkled, ”How could I forget about that plaything incident? Second sister-in-law, your reminder came just in time. Next time, I must use that to mock him well. Since he likes to bring up old matters to tarnish me, I’ll return the favor.”

The other three praised the idea. On the other side, Yuan Licheng at the small table with Jianqi and Qiu Zhi said, ”You two better not offend them, or there will be no good outcome.”

Qiu Zhi pulled a long face, ”But I’ve already offended them.”

”Then hurry up and show your loyalty. Once she thinks you’re her own, she definitely won’t mess with you.” Yuan Licheng suggested.

So after breakfast, the naive young Daoist Qiu Zhi went to Bai Ruozhu and righteously asked, ”Master, is there anything you need me to do? It’s my honor to ease your worries!”

Bai Ruozhu took a sip of tea, slowly put down the teacup, looked at Qiu Zhi, and asked, ”You’re volunteering, so don’t later claim I’m using the master-servant contract to control you.”

Qiu Zhi had a faint sense of foreboding but still said bravely, ”I won’t. I won’t speak recklessly anymore, Master.”
