Medical and Martial God

Chapter 236: Chapter 236: Heaven Has Eyes, Huang Quan Sheds Tears

On his way to Gusu Prison with Qiu Yunxuan and Kong Ruoruo, Ye Xiu sent a text message to Qing Luan. So, by the time he arrived, a burly, imposing middle-aged man was already waiting at the prison gate.

”Are you Prison Warden Wei Mingli?” Ye Xiu asked, extending his right hand. ”Hello, I am Ye Xiu!”

Wei Mingli certainly knew who Ye Xiu was; in fact, every official did. However, Ye Xiu addressing him so formally and even initiating a handshake left him feeling unexpectedly honored.

He quickly grasped Ye Xiu’s hand and said apologetically, ”I only just received news of your visit. My apologies for the inadequate welcome and the lack of preparation. Please forgive me!”

This scene left Qiu Yunxuan and Kong Ruoruo utterly astonished. They could see that Wei Mingli was extremely nervous in front of Ye Xiu, behaving exactly like a subordinate before a leader.

Could it be that Ye Xiu, aside from being the Medicine King of Huaxia, also has another identity? they wondered.

”Let’s skip the pleasantries,” Ye Xiu said, releasing Wei Mingli’s hand. ”Take me to see my uncle!”

”Of course, this way, please!”

Wei Mingli hurriedly led the way, his burly frame moving with unsteady steps, as if he were drunk. He was genuinely nervous; after all, he was facing Huang Quan.

”Mom, my cousin is just a Divine Doctor. Why does Wei Mingli seem so afraid of him?” Kong Ruoruo asked in a low voice.

Qiu Yunxuan didn’t answer. She didn’t know either.

But her heart was stirring like a stormy sea. Ten years ago, Ye Xiu was forced to flee overseas. He lay dormant for a decade before returning, and it seems that in those ten years abroad, he went through some formidable experiences to gain an identity that even Wei Mingli reveres.

The thought brought Qiu Yunxuan a sense of relief. The stronger his capabilities, the more unfathomable his background, and the greater his influence, the safer Ye Xiu—and our entire family—will be in the future.”Please hurry!” Ye Xiu urged impatiently.

”Right away!” Wei Mingli broke into a run.

Ye Xiu glanced at Qiu Yunxuan and Kong Ruoruo, and the three of them began to jog as well.

He was so anxious! For twenty years, he had believed his uncle was dead. Now, he couldn’t wait to see with his own eyes if his uncle was truly still alive.

Soon, under Wei Mingli’s guidance, they arrived at the door of a cell.

”Your uncle, Mr. Kong Dongming, is inside,” Wei Mingli said respectfully as he opened the door.

”I heard that for years, two prisoners have been plotting to kill my uncle?” Ye Xiu asked.

GAH!

Wei Mingli instantly broke out in a cold sweat, his face turning pale as he stammered, ”That, well...”

”Bring them to me,” Ye Xiu cut him off.

”Yes, well, please... please wait a moment!” Wei Mingli dashed off.

This scene only deepened Qiu Yunxuan’s and Kong Ruoruo’s curiosity about Ye Xiu’s identity, but they had no time to dwell on it. Ye Xiu was already opening the cell door with a trembling hand. The inside was pitch-black, and the sound of snoring drifted out.

Qiu Yunxuan let out an exasperated laugh. ”He sure sleeps soundly.” She recognized that snoring!

The three of them walked in, and Ye Xiu switched on the light.

Then, they all stood there, stunned.

”This is a prison cell?” Kong Ruoruo asked, completely baffled.

Ye Xiu and Qiu Yunxuan were equally taken aback. This was hardly a cell! There was a sofa, an air conditioner, a television, and even a computer. Though the space wasn’t large, it was fully furnished.

Ye Xiu’s eyes immediately fell on the middle-aged man sprawled on the bed, fast asleep. It was indeed his uncle, Kong Dongming.

”You heartless man! So you’ve been living the good life in here all this time,” Qiu Yunxuan fumed, running over and smacking him.

”Hmm? Who is it?” Kong Dongming’s eyes fluttered open. He was momentarily stunned to see Qiu Yunxuan, then his eyes shot wide open, all sleepiness vanishing. ”Honey? What in the world is going on? Not only did they move me to a new cell and serve me good food and drink, but now they’ve even sent my wife in?”

”Stop your nonsense,” Qiu Yunxuan said irritably, giving him a light punch. ”What is all this? Are you serving time or living like a lord in here?”

”I don’t know what’s going on either. I...” Kong Dongming began to explain as he sat up, but then he saw Ye Xiu and Kong Ruoruo. ”Ruoruo, you’re here too! Quick, come let your dad have a good look at you.”

”Dad!” Kong Ruoruo cried, rushing over to hug him as tears streamed down her face like a breached dam.

Seeing this, Qiu Yunxuan’s eyes also grew moist.

”Good girl, don’t cry, don’t cry. Come, let your dad get a good look at you!” Kong Dongming said, patting her back before gently pushing her away to wipe her tears tenderly.

”Enough of that!” Qiu Yunxuan interrupted their father-daughter moment, pointing at Ye Xiu. ”First, take a look at who this is.”

Kong Dongming paused, his gaze finally settling on Ye Xiu. He walked over and studied him from top to bottom and side to side. A feeling of familiarity washed over him. ”Young man, do we know each other?”

”You don’t recognize him? I suppose it’s no wonder. He was only six when you were arrested, and now he’s twenty-six,” Qiu Yunxuan said with a chiding laugh.

”Huh?” Kong Dongming’s mind buzzed. He stared at Ye Xiu in shock. ”You... you... you’re Ye Xiu?”

”It’s me!” Ye Xiu burst into tears, dropping to his knees before Kong Dongming. ”Uncle, I’m so sorry. I always thought you had passed away. You’ve suffered for these twenty years.”

As he spoke, huge teardrops rolled down his cheeks. Since his mother and grandparents passed away, Ye Xiu, left without any kin, had lived only for revenge. But now, finding his uncle alive...

Heaven has eyes! Heaven truly has eyes!

”You... you’re really Ye Xiu?” Kong Dongming’s emotions also spiraled out of control, tears instantly blurring his vision. He rushed to help Ye Xiu up. ”Uncle doesn’t blame you. Your aunt told me everything. If you had known I was alive, your life would have only been more difficult...”

He caressed Ye Xiu’s face. ”Good, good. You’ve grown so much. Your mother and grandparents can finally rest in peace.”

Ye Xiu wiped his eyes, filled with self-reproach. ”It’s all my fault. I was too careless. If I had gotten suspicious sooner and had someone investigate, you could have been released nine years ago, and I wouldn’t have spent ten years abroad before coming back.”

At that moment, Ye Xiu was consumed by regret. Had he known his uncle was alive, he would have returned long ago.

”Alright, alright, let’s not talk about the past,” Kong Dongming said emotionally, wiping Ye Xiu’s tears. ”What matters is that we’re alive. It’s good that we’re all alive.”

”Okay, save the reminiscing for later,” Qiu Yunxuan huffed. ”You heartless man, first explain to Ruoruo and me why you were living so well here but always pretended to be so miserable whenever we came to visit.”

”You’ve got it all wrong, honey!” Kong Dongming cried, looking as if he had been gravely wronged. ”I have no idea what’s going on. About half a month ago, Wei Mingli personally brought me here. They’ve been treating me like an honored ancestor, serving me good food and drink every day, and he even comes to check on me morning and night. I was starting to wonder if they’d changed my life sentence to a death sentence and were just giving me a few comfortable days before the end!”

”Why would Wei Mingli suddenly start treating you so well?” Qiu Yunxuan asked, puzzled.

”I wish I knew! I’ve been so scared these past few days I could barely eat or sleep,” Kong Dongming said.

From the side, Kong Ruoruo pouted. ”Your snoring can be heard eight hundred miles away, and you say you couldn’t sleep?”

Kong Dongming’s face immediately darkened. ”Honey, did Ruoruo major in arguing at college?”

Qiu Yunxuan was speechless.

Ye Xiu laughed. Twenty years in prison hadn’t changed his uncle’s positive, optimistic, and humorous nature. ”It must be because of me,” he said with a smile. ”It’s been less than a month since I returned to the country. They must have changed their attitude toward you as soon as I got back. But since I never brought it up, they didn’t release you.”
