The Forensic Doctor Better Than a Detective

Chapter 409: Chapter 243: Was It Suicide?

”Hello, are you Zhang Lei?”

”I’m from the Criminal Investigation Team, and I have an important question to confirm with you. Who have you rented your house to?”

”What’s their name?”

Li Jian was the first to dial the phone, his tone polite but with undeniable authority. As he spoke, he picked up a pen, ready to jot down any key information at any moment.

”Hello, I’m from the Jiangcheng Criminal Investigation Team.”

Jiang An immediately dialed the number, his voice steady and powerful, his gaze fixed on the phone screen as if trying to capture useful clues through it.

Not wanting to be left behind, Zhang Yean quickly pressed the dial button and said, ”Please cooperate with us, we’re investigating a case.”

As she spoke, she lightly tapped the table with her fingers to ease her inner tension.

Thus, the three of them synchronized and continuously repeated the inquiry process. If one didn’t know their identities, just seeing this setup might make one think they were a diligent customer service team. At this moment, they had shed the usual cold solemnness of police officers, replaced by a sincere request for cooperation from others.

After half an hour of intense work, Zhang Yean tightly gripped the phone, her voice unconsciously rising a few notches.

”Hello, let me confirm again, did you rent the house to someone with the surname He? A young man working at a brick factory.”

Upon hearing this, Li Jian and Jiang An felt their hearts leap to their throats, their heartbeats pounding urgently like a drum. Instinctively, they glanced around, their gazes meeting Jiang An and Li Jian’s, eyes filled with surprise and anticipation.

At this moment, Jiang An and Li Jian also knowingly put down their phones, their eyes like spotlights, all focusing on Zhang Yean’s phone.

Li Jian reacted quickly, seizing the pen on the table and swiftly writing ”ask him to come over to open the door” on a sticky note, then signaling to Zhang Yean.

Following this, Zhang Yean spoke in a calm yet firm tone that brooked no refusal.

”Hello, we are handling an urgent case, and need to locate this man with the surname He.”

”Could you please cooperate with us and open the door at Nanjiang Garden?”

After a brief silence from the other end of the line, a gentle voice replied.

”No problem, I’m currently strolling nearby. I’ll bring the key over to open the door immediately.”

About fifteen minutes later, Li Jian, Zhang Yean, and Jiang An followed behind an elderly man with white hair.

The man’s steps were slightly unsteady, but each step was taken with assurance. As he walked, he said, ”This house was bought for my son years ago.”

”But he went to the provincial city for work, leaving it vacant would be wasteful, so I decided to rent it out.”

”It’s been rented out for several years now.”

”However, that young man named He is quite honest, always pays the rent on time and never defaults, so I’ve kept renting it to him.”

While speaking, the old man took the key out of his pocket, his fingers trembling slightly.

Speaking, the old man turned his head, his gaze falling on Li Jian.

There was a hint of curiosity and concern in his eyes as he asked, ”I wonder what this young man has done, he usually seems quite honest.”

Li Jian inclined his head slightly, a grateful smile on his face as he said, ”Sir, thank you for coming over specifically to open the door for us today.”

”The case is still under investigation, it’s not convenient to reveal too much for now. Once we have results, we’ll notify you immediately.”

The old man sighed lightly, a trace of a smile forming on his face.

”I understand you have difficulties and confidentiality rules; I was just asking casually.”

”If this young man has made a small mistake, please be lenient and give him a chance to correct it.”

Seeing this, Zhang Yean quickly stepped forward, her expression sincere as she said, ”Sir, rest assured, we police need to rely on evidence when handling matters and won’t act without it.”

”If he truly has the chance to turn over a new leaf, we will certainly give him a hand to start anew.”

”However, that depends on the severity of what he’s done.”

As they spoke, with a creak, the living room door slowly opened.

Seeing this, Li Jian quickly turned his body slightly and bent forward.

”Sir, we appreciate it, you take a rest.”

”Once we’re done, we’ll close the door properly. If there’s anything else, we’ll call you again.”

The old man smiled and waved his hand, saying, ”It’s alright, I’ll sit by the hallway, just remember to lock the door once you’re done.”

”Alright, thank you very much.”

Jiang An stood still, watching the departing figure of the old man until he rounded a corner and disappeared.

At this moment, he appeared to remember something, furrowing his brow slightly as he said in a low voice to Li Jian, ”Just now when the door was opened, I noticed the old man turned the key twice.”

”It seems the door must have been locked from the outside before.”

Soon, the three of them cautiously entered the room.

Standing in the entryway, the interior lighting was dim, making their eyes struggle to adjust.

Li Jian felt along the wall, locating the light switch.

With a click, the light turned on, illuminating the entire room brightly.

The room revealed itself as a two-bedroom, one living room apartment with a tidy and reasonable layout. Various household items were neatly arranged on the coffee table, leaving no impression of clutter.

Jiang An, Li Jian, and Zhang Yean spread out in a fan shape, moving from the living room to the bedroom and study, meticulously checking every corner.

After a round, Li Jian shook his head slightly and said, ”Inside, there are no signs of struggle or hurried tidying up. The floor is clean as well, not suggesting anything has happened.”

Zhang Yean clicked her tongue, revealing a hint of surprise on her face.
