Sweet Nostalgia of the 80s

Chapter 1733: Chapter 1732: In a Dilemma

”Did you know? My dad has killed someone!” Mu Mian asked him in a low voice.

”I know.” Lin Sheng buried his head, shoveling rice into his mouth and chewing in large bites. ”A few years ago, Auntie committed suicide. Uncle Mu kept blaming himself, saying it was his fault! He said he killed her!”

”It’s not about that.” Mu Mian shook her head. ”If he still felt some remorse back then, now his conscience is completely dead. In his eyes now, all that matters is that filthy money—nothing else!”

”Not about that? Are you saying he killed someone else too?” Lin Sheng couldn’t help but shiver as he spoke, nearly dropping his bowl.

”Yeah!” Mu Mian nodded heavily, and tears started streaming down her face as she spoke. ”To be honest, I originally just wanted to hide away on the mountainside of Dongshan Village for the rest of my life. What my father did was so unconscionable, but I kept telling myself, no matter what, I couldn’t report him. No matter how bad he was, he was still my father. But now I realize I was wrong! I was really wrong. Ever since he got involved in drugs—from using to trafficking—he’s practically lost all sense of family!”

”Mianmian, I know you’re hurting! Don’t cry. Tell me everything about it. Let out all the bitterness and helplessness in your heart! It’s always better for two people to share it than for you to carry it alone!” Lin Sheng comforted her softly.

Mu Mian wiped her tears. ”Actually, he had been here to deal drugs before, and at that time, he even shot and killed a narcotics officer! That was the first time he killed someone. Later, he narrowly escaped and fled back to Nancheng, where he stayed in hiding for two years! During that time, he was always plagued with nightmares. I heard everything he said in his dreams. Eventually, I asked him about it... and he admitted it.”

After hearing Mu Mian’s account, Lin Sheng felt a chilling sensation sweep across his back. His father-in-law wasn’t just a drug dealer; he was a murderer!

And he killed a cop!

Seeing the look on Lin Sheng’s face, Mu Mian’s heart sank. Her voice trembled as she asked, ”Lin Sheng, are you afraid of me now too? Do you think I’m despicable for hiding this from you?”

Lin Sheng lifted his gaze to look at Mu Mian and slowly shook his head. He put down the bowl in his hands, cupped her face gently, and said, ”You should have told me sooner. The two of us figuring this out together is always better than you bearing it alone.”

”I suddenly feel so guilty!” Mu Mian sobbed softly. ”I’m such a coward. If only I had been braver, harsher—maybe I could have reported him sooner! Then none of this would have happened. Lin Sheng, do you think I’m terrible?”

”No, you’re not terrible! You’re kind!” Lin Sheng embraced Mu Mian with a pained expression, murmuring, ”We’re not saints; we’re just ordinary people. On one side is family, and on the other is justice for the country. Being caught in between, of course you’re torn! That’s why you did everything you could to save Major Qin and Captain Tian, even turning completely against your father. That’s why you went on to help the people your father had harmed... Mianmian... I understand your inner torment.”

”Lin Sheng... thank you!” Mu Mian let all her tears spill onto Lin Sheng’s shirt.

”Mianmian! There’s no need to be so formal with me!” Lin Sheng wiped away Mu Mian’s tears and said, ”Mu Mian, listen to me! Before, we didn’t have any chances, but now those chances have come. The military and the police are fully cooperating to hunt him down. We can’t just sit and wait for death; we need to figure out a way to save ourselves!”
