The Comeback of the Cannon-Fodder Supporting Actress

The Yangs

Yang Baolin finally feels a bit better today.

He can even walk a few steps now.

Sun Jinhua really cares for Yang Baolin, and today she specially slaughtered a chicken to make chicken soup for him.

While she was in the kitchen making chicken soup, Fan Zhili sneaked back from outside.

”Mom, I heard something.”

”What is it?” Sun Jinhua called Yang Baolin to come eat after serving the chicken soup.

Fan Zhili followed Sun Jinhua: ”It’s about the Fourth Son of Pei Family next door. I heard that she is dating that Third from Xiao Daguang’s family in town.”

”What?”

Sun Jinhua’s hand shook, almost spilling the chicken soup.

”Who did you say Pei Anning is dating?”

Fan Zhili laughed while pulling up a chair to sit down: ”It’s Xiao Family’s Third. Can you imagine what’s on her mind? Why would she choose someone from Xiao Family?”

Yang Baolin came out of the room just in time to catch these words: ”Elder sister-in-law, did you say Anning is dating someone?”

Fan Zhili nodded with a smile: ”Exactly, she and Xiao’s Third were seen holding hands wandering through town. Many people saw them, and now everyone in our village knows.”

Yang Baolin’s expression turned dark.

Fan Zhili and Sun Jinhua didn’t notice.

They were too engrossed in gossip.

Sun Jinhua continued serving Yang Baolin chicken soup while asking Fan Zhili, ”Does the neighbor know?”

Fan Zhili shook her head, smiling: ”Probably doesn’t know. You know how their family is, always thinking about Anning marrying into a better family. How would they let her marry into the Xiao Family? I bet Uncle Pei and Aunt Pei would raise a big fuss if they knew.”

Sun Jinhua smirked: ”Miss Pei, marrying into a good family? Would a real good family want her? Look at The Peis’ reputation; everyone knows it’s rotten. Not just good families, even ordinary ones would rather marry an ugly girl than one from their family. If Anning doesn’t marry a poor guy, who can she marry?”

”That’s true.” Fan Zhili agreed: ”Anning at least has self-awareness, knowing her reputation has been tainted, so she hurried to find someone to marry. No one’s talking about his conditions; someone willing to have her is already great, still she picks and chooses...”

Yang Baolin couldn’t listen any longer.

He wasn’t drinking chicken soup much, just left the bowls and walked away.

”Why aren’t you drinking?” Sun Jinhua quickly chased him into the room.

”No appetite.” Yang Baolin lay on the bed, lacking the strength to rise.

He felt truly upset inside, in a way that hurt more than his body.

Not just because of what his mom and elder sister-in-law said about Anning, but because Anning was dating again, and it was right after they split up, which Yang Baolin couldn’t accept.

”I know what you’re thinking.”

Sun Jinhua could clearly see Yang Baolin’s thoughts.

She sat on the bed to gently talk to him: ”It’s not that mom insists, but marrying a girl from Pei Family would tarnish our family’s name too. Your second brother and sister aren’t married yet, and if she steps into our home, your second brother and sister would get dragged down. Besides, Xiao’s Third, you can’t afford such a burden.”

Yang Baolin covered his head with the quilt, and soon his sobs could be heard from under it.

Sun Jinhua felt heartache too, but even so, she wouldn’t agree to Yang Baolin and Anning’s matter.

”Think it over yourself. I’ll keep the chicken soup warm for you; come out and drink it when you’ve thought it through.”

Anning and Xiao Yuan played around town pretty much the whole day, only coming back at dusk.

She parked the bicycle in the yard, caught the scent of food wafting from the kitchen, and ran inside: ”Mom, what’s cooking? Smells delicious.”

Liu Dalian glared at Anning: ”You still know how to come back home, huh.”

Anning followed Liu Dalian closely: ”This is my home, why wouldn’t I come back.”

She cheerfully approached: ”Mom, I talked to someone and got the loan matter sorted today. Tomorrow I’ll take dad with me to do the paperwork, and once that’s settled, we can start.”

”Get out of here.” Liu Dalian pushed Anning aside: ”Stop circling around me; I’ve seen enough of you.”

”Why saying such things?” Anning crowded forward, teasing: ”Mom, take a good look at me; I’m your most beloved little daughter. Look at my face, fair and tender, beautiful and charming, way better than dad’s old face. How could you be tired of seeing me? You shouldn’t say such things; you should say you can’t get enough of seeing me, or I’d be sad.”

”Who’s sad?

Liu Dalian threw her spoon in frustration: ”It’s not you who’s sad; it’s you who breaks my heart. Tell me, are you dating Xiao’s Third?”

”Yeah.” Anning cheekily stole a bite of food to eat while nodding.

”You say yes, you say yes.” Liu Dalian raised her hand but couldn’t bring herself to hit, then put it down.

”What are you thinking? Out of everybody, you had to choose him?”

Anning swallowed the food in her mouth: ”Well, it’s because I’m smitten with him; what can I do? He’s too charming; at first glance I thought, wow, this guy’s handsome; better tie him down quickly.”

”You shameless girl.” This time, Liu Dalian was genuinely angry, lightly tapping Anning with her palm: ”Is that how a Miss should talk?”

Anning blinked: ”What’s wrong? Why shouldn’t I say it? My sister... Not just say it, but do it. My third sister also goes out looking for dates all the time; she doesn’t just find one, but many. If she can do it, why can’t I, showing restraint and dating just one person? Moreover, this is just dating; I didn’t say I’m definitely marrying him, why are you anxious?”

”Really?” Liu Dalian paused in shock: ”You haven’t talked about marriage?”

Anning sat down and added a log to the fire: ”Oh, Mom, we are just dating. Besides, how old am I? It’s not possible to discuss marriage so soon. Plus, his elder and second brothers aren’t married yet; we must wait for them to marry first. By then, I might not even fancy him anymore.”

Liu Dalian breathed a heavy sigh of relief: ”As long as it’s not, as long as it’s not. I’m telling you, never think about marrying him; their family is too poor, Xiao Daguang is lazy as hell, lazier than your dad. Look at your dad, and you’ll know what kind of life you’d get into.”

Anning nodded obediently: ”I’m looking, I’m not stupid. No way just some sweet talk would fool me. After all, I’ve learned a bit from my third sister; even though I might not grasp everything, fooling guys is doable; he can’t fool me for sure.”

Only now did Liu Dalian’s face light up with a smile: ”Then go ahead if you want to date, just be mindful not to be improper like your aunt.”

Anning finally understood why her three sisters and aunt turned out this way.

It’s all because of Liu Dalian’s indulgence.

Even such blatant talk was acceptable to Liu Dalian, without any discomfort, which showed Liu Dalian’s values were questionable.

Moreover, she genuinely spoils her children, inevitably leading them to have skewed perspectives; hence, they all ended up a bit abnormal.

”Got it, got it.”

Still, at this moment, Anning had to placate Liu Dalian: ”I’m just attracted to his looks, it’s new and exciting. Who knows, after a couple of years, I might get bored.”

An Yi, who had been eavesdropping outside, suddenly dashed inside: ”Anning, I’m telling you, it’s fine to date but never give him money; I’ve never handed money over to a man while dating. Their family’s poor; there’s nothing good you could get, don’t give our stuff to him, understand?”
