The Comeback of the Cannon-Fodder Supporting Actress

”What, you already found a boyfriend this fast?”

Su Mingzhu was still resting when she got a call from Su Mingyu; hearing that Su Mingyu had found someone, she was almost so shocked she jumped up: ”Your speed is really something else.”

Su Mingyu was still wearing that extremely delicate, stunningly beautiful but cold expression: ”I’m not a marriage-phobe. Sooner or later I’m getting married anyway. Marrying late is worse than marrying early. One, I don’t have the time or energy to find a boyfriend myself. Two, I don’t trust my own judgment. I might as well leave it to the higher-ups. Anyone they send to me will have been vetted to death. His looks, character, personality absolutely won’t have any problems. I just have to pick one I find pleasing to the eye from this pool. That saves so much trouble.”

Su Mingzhu really had to sigh. Her own little sister’s way of thinking was also something else; an ordinary person really couldn’t pull off something like this.

”You’re so young and you’ve never had any fantasies about love, and you’re just handing over your whole life like this? Aren’t you afraid your personalities won’t match and you’ll end up constantly in conflict?”

Su Mingyu let out a cold laugh: ”Sis, your thinking is wrong.”

Uh?

Su Mingzhu rubbed her forehead: ”What did I say? I’m the one thinking like a normal person here.”

”And just because it’s a ’normal’ way of thinking, it has to be right? What is love? It’s nothing more than a by-product of hormone secretion. If you want love, I can totally make a tube of reagent for you. You and the person you’re into can take it, and I guarantee the two of you will be madly in love for a period of time.”

That icy voice of Su Mingyu’s made Su Mingzhu shudder: ”Forget it, what you’re saying is kind of scary.”

Su Mingyu went on: ”I’m strong enough myself. The man I choose won’t dare pull any funny tricks. Even if he has complaints about me, he can only bottle them up. As long as I stay this strong for a lifetime, he can only be good to me and pamper me for a lifetime and won’t dare do anything out of line. Sis, I only care that I live happily my whole life. What do I care what’s going on in his head.”

Su Mingzhu gave her a thumbs up: ”Boss-level, huh. As expected of my sister. This way of thinking... I don’t even know what to say. But the more I think about it, the more I feel you’ve got a point. Even if two people really are into each other for a certain period, once that period passes and everything settles back into the mundane, they might start resenting each other in daily life, even start to hate each other. Whereas someone like you—honestly, if I were a man, I’d only dare cradle you in my hands and coax you carefully. Otherwise, never mind how the higher-ups might deal with me, just you alone—I wouldn’t dare cross you. If I really pissed you off, who knows when you’d grab me for an experiment.”

The more she talked, the more amused Su Mingzhu got: ”But I seriously didn’t expect you to find a boyfriend in such a short time just because Old Madam was nagging you to get married. So what were you thinking? I always thought someone like you would be obsessed with work and not want to start a family at all. I’d already prepared myself for you staying single for life.”

Su Mingyu actually laughed.

She only relaxed like this with her own family: ”Why wouldn’t I want to start a family? Of course I’m going to get married and have kids. With genes as excellent as mine, they absolutely have to be passed on. Otherwise that’d be a loss for the whole world.”

Her own little sister was still this narcissistic.

Su Mingzhu was a bit speechless: ”Fine, whatever you say is right. But now that you’ve got a boyfriend, I’m afraid our family is going to start pushing me to get married too.”

”That’s your problem. Nothing to do with me.”

Su Mingyu threw this out coldly and then hung up.

Su Mingzhu jumped up and cursed a few words, then started laughing again.

A few days later, Su Mingyu brought Tang Feiyu home. She and Tang Feiyu had officially made their relationship exclusive.

If it had been Su Mingzhu bringing a boyfriend home, Xiao Yuan would definitely have done a thorough background check and then hauled the guy into the study to intimidate and bribe him a bit. Whether that man was human or ghost, he had to make sure his daughter wouldn’t get hurt.

But with Su Mingyu bringing a boyfriend home, Xiao Yuan didn’t need to run that whole routine.

Instead, he pulled Tang Feiyu aside and spoke to him gently, comforting him, which moved Tang Feiyu so much his eyes filled with tears.

He’d already prepared himself to be tormented by the future father-in-law today. He never expected his future father-in-law would be so nice—far from making things hard for him, he actually comforted him.

And the future mother-in-law was great too; she personally cooked, and when he left she even packed a bunch of things for him to take.

Once they stepped out of the house, Tang Feiyu said to Su Mingyu, ”Didn’t expect our parents to be so reasonable. No wonder they managed to raise such a great girl like you.”

Su Mingyu gave him a cold glance: ”At least you’ve got some taste.”

Tang Feiyu immediately grinned like a complete fool.

Xiao Yuan and Anning saw the two of them off, and that night when they went back to their room, Anning sighed: ”Whatever else, from now on we should treat that Tang family boy a little better. The kid’s got it rough too.”

Xiao Yuan snorted coldly.

He was pretty conflicted.

The girl he’d raised was being taken cheap by some other family’s boy—of course he wasn’t thrilled. But thinking about his daughter’s personality, and then thinking about that Tang family kid’s total fool act, he could only sigh: ”Forget it. What am I doing taking a fool so seriously? With our girl, she could sell that Tang family kid off and he’d still help her count the money.”

Anning chuckled: ”Ming Yu and Mingzhu are different. This child is too smart. Because she’s so smart, she’s a bit cold-blooded and detached, and she deals with people and situations very rationally. It’s almost impossible for anyone to scheme against her. Mingzhu looks obviously shrewd, but she’s kind and soft-hearted, and in relationships she’s actually more likely to get hurt.”

Xiao Yuan grunted: ”Anyway, we’ll just keep an eye on them. Neither of them is going to turn out badly.”

Su Mingzhu stayed home a few days, then packed her luggage and went into the production team to film.

This time she was filming an urban drama, playing the female lead. By the time she joined the crew, most of the cast was already in place.

The male lead was a traffic-star whose acting was still decent, named Gao Jiaxuan. He’d arrived a bit earlier than Su Mingzhu. When he saw her come in, he went over warmly to say hello.

Su Mingzhu knew who Gao Jiaxuan was but had never met him in person. Seeing him now, she thought, no wonder he could become a top-tier traffic star—this man really was good-looking. Though he couldn’t compare to her own dad, that face of his was very easy on the eyes.

Once the male and female leads had gotten acquainted, the drama officially started filming the next day.

After a few days of filming, Su Mingzhu’s impression of Gao Jiaxuan improved somewhat.

Gao Jiaxuan looked good, was modest and cautious, and worked really hard. He could endure hardship. Also, like people said, his acting was actually not bad; clearly he’d put effort into honing it.

Gao Jiaxuan was humorous and fun, and could get along with anyone. It didn’t take long before his relationship with Su Mingzhu got better and better.

He was genuinely eager to learn from Su Mingzhu, and she seriously taught him how to act. By the time the shoot was halfway through, a lot of people in the crew were looking at the two of them differently.

Quite a few people were privately discussing whether Su Mingzhu and Gao Jiaxuan had fallen for each other.

Su Mingzhu was straightforward and aboveboard and didn’t take this kind of talk to heart.

Only, even if she didn’t care, someone else did.

No one knew who had snapped photos of her and Gao Jiaxuan running lines together and posted them online, then spread rumors everywhere that she and Gao Jiaxuan were about to make things official.

As a top-tier traffic star, Gao Jiaxuan naturally had the most girlfriend-fans, and many of them were irrational. Once they saw these photos, they started flaming Su Mingzhu everywhere, calling her shameless for clinging to their ”gege,” saying she’d slept her way up and didn’t deserve someone like their gege, stuff like that.

Some even went to Su Mingzhu’s Weibo to curse her out, telling her to have some shame and to let go of their gege as soon as possible.

Su Mingzhu had fans too. Most of them were relatively rational, but seeing their own idol being insulted like this, they couldn’t take it either and jumped in to curse back at Gao Jiaxuan’s fans, leading to a full-on flame war.

As a result, Gao Jiaxuan’s public image took a hit, and the goodwill Su Mingzhu had among casual viewers kept dropping. For both of them, this whole thing was all downside and no upside.

The company managing Su Mingzhu quickly stepped in to control comments and clarify her relationship with Gao Jiaxuan, and issued stern warnings to those who were insulting her.

After that round of damage control, things calmed down pretty quickly, though some ripples remained.

Anyway, lots of people were still gossiping in private that Su Mingzhu must have latched onto some rich sugar daddy and definitely had a patron backing her.

And right then, the once–all-around champion of the national 100m and 200m sprints, Zhang Xiangshan, who had been out of the spotlight for two years, suddenly came out to support Su Mingzhu. He posted a statement on Weibo saying he thought very highly of Su Mingzhu, basically a whole page of praise.

Once Zhang Xiangshan spoke up, the internet went completely quiet.

After all, even though Zhang Xiangshan had retired, his status was still there. He’d dominated the sports world for many years and was a highly respected athlete. With him backing Fang Mingzhu, no one really dared say anything.

Who would dare curse out Zhang Xiangshan? Zhang Xiangshan’s fans were no pushovers—there were big shots from all walks of life among them. Anyone who dared lay a finger on Zhang Xiangshan would be ripped to shreds by those big shots coming down personally.
