The Comeback of the Cannon-Fodder Supporting Actress

Yang Baoni and Yang Lingni truly broke Yang Lao Mao’s heart.

The people in the village say that hearts are made of flesh, an old saying passed down for generations. They used to think it made sense, but after this incident, they feel Yang Lao Mao’s heart is as hard as iron.

In recent years, the three sisters from the Yang family couldn’t be said to have treated Yang Lao Mao badly.

Everyone in the village knows the character of Yang Dachou and his wife; Yang Lao Mao followed them, never having enough to eat or wear.

If it weren’t for the three sisters thinking about him, bringing him food and clothes, and occasionally giving him some pocket money, Yang Lao Mao might not have survived long.

They thought, after all, he’s their father; even if he wasn’t very good to them, he did raise them, so when they should take care of him, they do. They also hoped that after years of care, Yang Lao Mao would become closer to them, at least have some warmth in his heart.

But no, not at all.

When it came to a real incident, Yang Lao Mao abandoned them faster than anyone else.

Yang Baoni and Yang Lingni couldn’t figure out why; is a son really that important, important enough to abandon conscience?

”Old fool.”

Old Madam was also extremely angry: ”Don’t care about him anymore, let him taste what it’s like to rely on his son.”

Xiao Yuan and Zhang Xiangshan didn’t go to Yangjiazhuang, nor did they look for Yang Fugui. They went straight to the police station to report the crime.

The two found the police and directly said: ”Comrade police, we want to report a case. We accuse Yang Fugui from Yangjiazhuang Village of raping a minor...”

Xiao Yuan recounted the events: ”All these things were personally admitted by Yang Fugui. As his relatives, we cannot harbor criminals; we should uphold justice by punishing our own, so the two of us came forward.”

The police were stupefied by the duo’s statements, then recorded their testimony, reported the matter upwards, and soon the local precinct received the call, sending officers to Sanni’s home to understand the situation.

Sanni’s parents were no longer thinking of asking Yang Fugui for money.

They also knew the situation at Yang Dachou’s house; the household was dirt-poor, had no money at all. Originally, they were asking money from Yang Fugui thinking his three aunts had some, also Yang Erchou’s family had money.

Sanni’s parents figured that despite the bad relations between Yang Erchou and Yang Dachou, for the sake of keeping his nephew out of prison, he might spare some cash.

Unexpectedly, that fool Yang Fugui didn’t go to Yang Erchou for money; instead, he intercepted Yang Junni, nearly killing her.

After this incident, they realized that neither Yang sisters nor Yang Erchou would have given any money to Yang Fugui, so when the police showed up, they willingly told the truth: ”Comrade police, we originally thought of keeping it quiet; this kind of thing getting out wouldn’t be good for our girl’s reputation. But since Yang’s family has reported it, we won’t hide anymore. We also want to report, comrade police, you must help us get justice, arrest Yang Fugui and convict him.”

Now with both families admitting to it, there was almost no mistake about it.

But the police still made rounds in the village to confirm Yang Fugui indeed ran away, hurried back to report and launched an extensive manhunt for Yang Fugui.

Yang Lao Mao, previously pretending to be sick in bed, couldn’t maintain the act once he knew; he angrily got up and went to Sanni’s home to curse, nearly getting a beating from Sanni’s parents, then he found his way to the county hospital.

Looking for Yang Erchou, he immediately cursed: ”You heartless soul! When such matters happen to other families, they hide it for fear of shame spreading outside. But you encouraged your son-in-law and Xiangshan to report it! You’re really something; are you not afraid of being unable to face our ancestors in the future...”

Yang Erchou was worrying about Yang Junni at the moment; he was both anxious and angry with a restless heart when Yang Lao Mao came over and started berating him blindly.

Being of such an age, with married children and grandchildren, of course, Yang Erchou was unable to avoid embarrassment.

”Why wouldn’t I face ancestors? I’ll have plenty of face. My daughter is a top scorer, now a scientist, and brings glory to our Yang family. When I meet ancestors, they will praise me! Besides, who is our ancestor, do you know? Our ancestral tablet is gone; you’re just babbling on about ancestors.”

Yang Erchou, full of anger, began to retaliate against Yang Lao Mao.

Old Madam quickly pulled Yang Erchou aside, and all her energy unleashed onto Yang Lao Mao.

”You shameless, heartless old thing! Your daughters are lying here, life or death unknown, and instead of checking on them, you’re whining in bed pretending to be sick. Now you come over but not out of concern for them—come to berate my son! What has my son ever done to you? And I’ll tell you this: I was the one who sent for reporting. Someone who committed such acts as Yang Fugui deserves to be arrested and convicted; he should serve time.”

”You, you...”

Yang Lao Mao pointed at Old Madam, his face turning blue from anger.

Old Madam was still ranting furiously: ”What? Want to hit me? Go ahead, I’m standing right here; do you dare? You think it’s like the old days when the kids were small and I couldn’t fight back—always got beaten and bullied. Now my sons and daughters are grown; I also have grandkids and sons-in-law here, let’s see if you dare.”

Old Madam truly had her spine straightened.

Everyone in the hospital was her kin and sided with her; if Yang Lao Mao really dared strike her, her sons, daughters, and grandchildren would surely intervene, leaving Yang Lao Mao nowhere to gain.

”You shrew.”

Yang Lao Mao struggled for a long time before squeezing out this one phrase.

Old Madam responded with even more confidence: ”And I’ll tell you, I can’t live with someone like you anymore. I want a divorce.”

”You, you’re shameless.”

Yang Lao Mao did not expect Old Madam would talk about divorce; at such an age, he couldn’t afford that kind of disgrace.

”I’m not discussing this with you; I’m formally notifying you.”

Old Madam shouted with hands on hips: ”If you peacefully agree to the divorce, everything will be fine. If you don’t agree, I will file for divorce; I have been separated from you for many years. The court will grant the divorce, and then it would be you who faced immense disgrace. Think about it carefully.”

Old Madam had already thought everything through.

If it weren’t for Yang Junni’s matter, she would have at most just not lived with Yang Lao Mao anymore. But with Yang Junni’s situation, she decided on divorce with Yang Lao Mao.

She was not stupid, sharp-witted.

She knew Yang Lao Mao’s future days would be hard; the two daughters certainly wouldn’t help him anymore. By then, villagers would see Yang Lao Mao dressed in tatters, constantly hungry and fatigued, surely whispering behind her back, saying Old Madam was unkind, heartless.

The villagers would certainly say that a hundred days of marital grace should be remembered, claiming Old Madam enjoys her good life but leaves the old man uncared for, utterly unreasonable.

Old Madam would not like being gossiped about in such a manner.

Of course, she had no wish to care for Yang Lao Mao.

Why should she care? Hadn’t she been beaten enough? Or was she foolish enough to court insults?

Living with her granddaughter was so blissful; she even hoped to take care of herself well to travel the world with her granddaughter. Why should she give up her wonderful life for an old man who had abused her years ago?

Therefore, Old Madam decided to utilize the current situation to tear things apart, hastily divorce the old man. Once they’re no longer married, the old man will have no ties to her.
