The Comeback of the Cannon-Fodder Supporting Actress

Yangjiazhuang

Xiao Xiu threw all of Xiao Mei’s things out.

”Look at these junk items, it’s surprising you can wear them.”

She scolded Xiao Mei angrily.

Xiao Mei shrank into the corner, afraid to speak.

”Alright, I’ll buy you a few sets of new clothes later.”

Xiao Xiu pulled Xiao Mei to go outside: ”Tonight we’ll first go to the county to find a hotel to stay, and get you a proper bath, and then trim your hair.”

Xiao Mei looked back at the old house she’d lived in for so many years, and thought of how Xiao Xueqing had said that Xiao Xiu had a house and a shop in the county, but now they were rented out, and the rent was taken by Xiao Li’s couple.

She asked Xiao Xiu: ”Mom, can your house and shop in the county be transferred to my name?”

”Why?”

Xiao Xiu frowned.

Xiao Mei lowered her head: ”I, I’m scared, I just want to be a bit secure. If I have a house and a shop, even if something happens in the future, I still have a place to live, and a shop to collect rent from, it’s better than following grandpa, grandma, and uncle.”

Xiao Xiu thought for a while: ”Alright, but we have to wait until we’re settled in the Capital first.”

She tapped Xiao Mei’s forehead: ”If we were to discuss transferring now, I’m afraid your grandparents and uncle wouldn’t let you go, since your household registration is still here.”

Xiao Mei didn’t really understand these issues, but she knew this was her mom, and since she came to get her, she planned to be good to her and wouldn’t harm her.

”I’ll listen to Mom.”

Once they reached the county, Xiao Xiu took Xiao Mei to find a hotel to stay, and in the evening gave Xiao Mei a thorough bath.

The next day, Xiao Xiu took Xiao Mei to buy a few sets of new clothes and cut her hair. Now tidied up, Xiao Mei was finally passable.

Though she still looked malnourished, with sallow skin and thin frame, at least she looked clean and neat, like a model kid.

Xiao Mei wore the new clothes and looked at herself in the mirror.

She looked at herself in the mirror, and couldn’t help but think of the year before New Year’s when she went out to gather firewood and then saw the two girls getting out of the car not far from Yangjia.

She later heard from the villagers that this was the granddaughter of the Yang family. The girl’s mother was particularly remarkable, a great scientist, and their father was very wealthy too.

She looked at those two girls, wearing beautiful clothes, with happy smiles on their faces, clearly girls living carefree lives full of affection.

At that time, she envied them greatly, while feeling particularly inferior, thinking about when she too could wear pretty clothes.

But now she wore pretty clothes, yet she still couldn’t compare to those two girls.

It’s like...

Yes, it’s like those two girls were noble princesses, while she was merely a lowly servant.

”Not bad.”

Xiao Mei heard Xiao Xiu’s voice. Xiao Xiu looked at her like she was evaluating merchandise: ”Just a bit thin, we’ll give you proper nutrition and make you fairer, then you’ll look like a city person.”

These words were truly harsh, making Xiao Mei’s heart quite uncomfortable.

After living in the county for two days and settling the household registration matter, Xiao Xiu took Xiao Mei to the Capital.

Xiao Mei never imagined she would meet the Su family little girl again.

She couldn’t believe Xiao Xiu was so generous, even managing to pull strings and spend a lot of money to get her into Peiying Primary School.

On her first day of school, Xiao Mei saw the Su family little girl surrounded by many admirers.

She entered the campus with anxiety, carrying her schoolbag.

This school was completely different from the village’s primary school. The campus looked large, especially exquisite, planted with many flowers and trees. The teaching and dormitory buildings, and various other buildings were hidden among the trees, making the entire campus look like a garden.

The place was full of well-maintained beautiful plants and trees, with scenic spots changing at each step, with pavilions, bridges, and flowing water everywhere.

Even the buildings had a quaint and elegant charm.

This made Xiao Mei even more unsure, almost afraid to walk.

Just then, she saw Su Mingzhu from afar, wearing a white shirt and plaid skirt, with a smile on her face, surrounded by people.

Even though she was wearing the same uniform as other students, Su Mingzhu had the ability to make people notice her at a glance.

Wherever she went, she seemed like a luminous object, overshadowing everyone else completely.

Indeed, she lived up to her name, truly the Pearl of the Su family.

Xiao Mei clenched the strap of her backpack tightly, dazedly watching Su Mingzhu talk and laugh with her classmates as they walked away.

When she got home after school, Xiao Mei tentatively asked Xiao Xiu: ”Mom, do you, do you know the Su family?”

She didn’t expect that just one question would cause Xiao Xiu’s face to change drastically: ”Who told you about the Su family? You’re not allowed to mention the Su family anymore, they’re heartless...”

Xiao Xiu cursed loudly, scaring Xiao Mei from ever mentioning it again.

When Xiao Xiu had dressed up and went out with her handbag to have fun with her patron, Xiao Mei picked up the phone and called Xiao Xueqing: ”Aunt, do you know the Su family?”

There was a silence on the other end, then Xiao Xueqing still told Xiao Mei about the Su family.

Only then did Xiao Mei know, Su Mingzhu’s father used to be surnamed Xiao, he used to be her uncle. Later, they discovered the babies were swapped, and the children of the four families returned to their respective places, while Xiao Xueqing used to be the Gu family’s daughter. Later, when the Gu family found their real daughter, they drove her out.

”Mei, your mom is understandably angry. That Su Yuan made a lot of money back then, but hid it from the family, until he returned to the Su family. Only then did your grandpa find out he was not just a laborer, but had become a big boss in the Capital. But by then, he had already changed his surname to Su, and your grandpa had no choice. To be honest, that person was truly heartless and unrighteous, whether he belonged to the Xiao family or not. But the Xiao family raised him until he was over twenty, and he turned his back just like that, such a heartless and ingrate.”

Xiao Mei said nothing.

After hanging up the phone, she had a vague feeling of anger in her heart.

She wondered how Su Mingzhu’s father could do that.

Clearly the Xiao family raised him for so many years, yet he could ignore his family like that.

If he had cared for the Xiao family, if he had supported her grandparents, would her life have been different? She wouldn’t have suffered so much; she could have become a little princess like Su Mingzhu and Su Mingyu.

Xiao Yuan didn’t know there was still a child resenting him.

He’s in a restaurant now, sitting across from a plump young man.

The young man had quite decent features, but being a bit plump made him appear far more ordinary.

”Se, Second Brother.”

The young man stammered with a call: ”I’m Zhou Hai.”

Xiao Yuan responded with a hum: ”I know you’re Zhou Hai, Qinzi mentioned you.”

Zhou Hai smiled sheepishly: ”I also heard about Second Brother from Qinzi, she said she couldn’t have made it to the Capital without your help and would still be stuck in the countryside otherwise.”

”Qinzi and I helped each other. When I was starting my business, Qinzi helped a lot.”

Xiao Yuan chuckled; Zhou Hai was too nervous. If Xiao Yuan continued to maintain a stern demeanor, Zhou Hai’s sweat might just drip off his forehead.

”Let’s have a meal first, Second Brother, order the dishes.”

Zhou Hai handed over the menu.

Xiao Yuan casually ordered a couple of dishes.

Zhou Hai ordered two more.

Once the ordering was done, Xiao Yuan then asked Zhou Hai: ”What are your plans for the future?”

Zhou Hai’s face flushed red from holding it in, and finally said: ”I’m an art teacher, so I’ll definitely continue teaching in the future. Frankly, I don’t have many classes; I have plenty of free time. I’m just planning to teach well, paint well. I also do some design work apart from teaching, like drawing for people, but I don’t earn much.”

”Second Brother, although my salary isn’t high, I saved for years and now bought a house in the Capital, though it’s only the down payment, but still a place of my own.”

Seeing Xiao Yuan silent, Zhou Hai thought he wasn’t satisfied, quickly explaining: ”You can rest assured, Second Brother, although I can’t promise riches and luxury to Qinzi, but I certainly won’t let her suffer with me.”

Uh?

With those words, Xiao Yuan asked Zhou Hai: ”Hasn’t Qinzi told you what she does?”

Zhou Hai quietly wiped his sweat: ”Qinzi works in a pastry shop making cakes, that’s how I met her when buying pastries.”

Xiao Yuan was a bit amused and speechless, seems like this is truly an unexpected coincidence, even Xiao Qin, about to marry, hadn’t properly told Zhou Hai what she does.
