The Comeback of the Cannon-Fodder Supporting Actress

Xiao Xiu went back and beat Xiao Mei up.

She was infuriated.

”What on earth are you doing? I sent you to school to study hard, and here you are, provoking Su Mingzhu? Now look at you, you’ve been expelled, are you pleased now? Happy now? You’re supposed to be so capable, aren’t you? Then don’t get expelled!”

Xiao Xiu cried while hitting Xiao Mei.

”What did I do to deserve this? I worked so hard to get you into Peiying, and you ended up ruining everything.”

Xiao Mei was in excruciating pain from the beating, but she didn’t shed a single tear.

”There are plenty of good schools in the Capital, it’s not just Peiying. If I don’t study there, I can go to another school; my grades are decent enough...”

Xiao Xiu, enraged, pinched and twisted Xiao Mei: ”What do you know? Another school? Do other schools have the same wealth as Peiying? Do they have the same reputation as Peiying? Do they have as many rich kids?”

Once exhausted from beating, she slumped onto the sofa: ”Why did I go through all the trouble to send you to Peiying? Isn’t it because there are lots of wealthy kids there? What kind of significant figure do you expect to attract later? Those bosses are cunning, they’ll only toy with you, toss you some cheap gifts, and during crucial matters concerning benefits, they’ll make a run for it faster than anyone. With your background, no one will marry you. To change your fate, you need to latch onto someone during your school years. Students are comparatively simple, and you’re their classmates, which means the relationship is pure. If you can secure someone during this time, date them for several years, then after graduation, you might have a chance to marry into a wealthy family. I planned so thoroughly for you, and now you’ve ruined everything.”

These words left Xiao Mei deep in thought.

Xiao Xiu waved weakly: ”Forget it, forget it, you’re just mud that can’t stick to the wall.”

Xiao Mei’s heart ached, she didn’t argue back and silently returned to her room.

The next day Su Mingzhu went to school, and during lunch, Li Hui whispered to her: ”Do you know why Mrs. Gu went to school to beat Xiao Mei yesterday?”

Su Mingzhu shook her head.

Li Hui continued: ”Because Xiao Mei’s mom has been hooking up with Gu Hao’s dad, who’s now infatuated and is insisting on divorcing Mrs. Gu. Then Gu Hao went home praising how great Xiao Mei is, how could Mrs. Gu stand that? She got provoked and rushed to school to beat Xiao Mei.”

Su Mingzhu was shocked.

She didn’t expect such a reason behind it.

”Why would Xiao Mei’s mom do that?”

Su Mingzhu couldn’t understand: ”It’s not like she’s struggling; she has houses and shops in the county, several houses in the Capital, savings, and lots of luxury items. Even if she does nothing for the rest of her life, she has enough for her and Xiao Mei. Why is she so... disrespectful?”

Li Hui shook her head: ”Who knows, but I am astonished. What is this? A mother-daughter duo hooking up with a father-son duo...”

It’s offensive.

Su Mingzhu remained silent.

She thought thankfully her dad wasn’t related to the Xiao Family; otherwise, being involved with such an extraordinary family would have brought constant unrest.

Thinking about extraordinary family affairs, Su Mingzhu didn’t expect to come home to find her family gathered together.

As she put away her backpack, she greeted her grandparents and great-grandparents.

Li Cuixia grabbed Su Mingzhu to sit beside her, and Old Madam pulled Su Mingyu over.

Su Mingzhu noticed the somber faces and knew something must’ve happened at home.

She dared not question, just quietly sat and listened.

Li Cuixia whispered to Yang Erchou: ”What should we do about this?”

Yang Erchou pulled out a cigarette but put it away upon seeing Su Mingzhu and Su Mingyu.

”What should we do? Let’s return to the county; otherwise, should we bring the old man to the Capital? I can’t have him bothering my daughters.”

Li Cuixia actually didn’t want to go back to the county, but there’s no choice, is there?

Su Mingzhu was increasingly puzzled: ”What’s happening in our family?”

Yang Erchou worried aloud: ”Your Great Uncle was in an accident and is now paralyzed. Your Great Aunt has to care for him, so she can’t take care of your Great Grandfather, and we need to bring him over.”

Su Mingyu frowned: ”Didn’t we agree one family would take care of one elder?”

Yang Erchou chuckled bitterly: ”That’s what we said, but they’re already having a tough time, and caring for a disabled person makes it harder. If we don’t take the elder away, the villagers will gossip indefinitely.”

Su Mingzhu begrudged losing Yang Erchou and Li Cuixia: ”Then isn’t it okay to bring him? We’re not short on food here.”

Yang Erchou was even more troubled: ”If we bring the old man, no one will get any peace. When he comes, Yang Fuyu and his spouse will bring their child too. Eventually, we’ll have their entire family here for us to support.”

It indeed is a bothering issue.

Li Cuixia gritted her teeth: ”Let’s go back, but not to Yangjiazhuang. We’ll stay at the house in the county and bring the old man there.”

At this moment, Anning quietly asked: ”Is it possible to find a good nursing home?”

Yang Erchou waved it off: ”Rural folk don’t recognize that. The old man has sons and daughters; if he lives in a nursing home, people would gossip about us.”

Xiao Yuan spoke: ”Dad, why don’t you discuss it with Auntie? If she doesn’t want to take care of Grandpa, you guys can bring him here. Grandpa will be our responsibility, and the other family won’t meddle. If Aunt is willing to care for him, we won’t let her suffer. We’ll provide money and hire someone to look after Grandpa...”

Anning added: ”Dad, make sure to discuss this properly with Auntie, maybe she’ll prefer the money.”

True enough.

Yang Erchou chuckled: ”Alright, I’ll discuss this with her later. If the money is adequate, she’ll likely choose to care for him.”

As they were speaking, the phone rang.

Yang Erchou quickly picked up the phone.

A moment later, he hung up the phone in a daze: ”Pack up, everyone, we’re going back; Eldest is gone.”

Saying this, Yang Erchou looked deeply saddened, his eyes barely holding back tears.

No matter how antagonistic with Yang Dachou, despite years without much contact, blood ties meant that his sudden passing left Yang Erchou feeling melancholic.

Anning quickly stood and prepared things with Xiao Yuan.

Su Liang tugged Geng Shuhua: ”We’ll pack up too. After all, we’re in-laws; we should go back and pay our respects.”

Old Madam sat on the sofa for a long time without moving, and when Anning finished packing, she slowly rose.

Anning swiftly supported her: ”Grandma, please don’t be too sad.”

Old Madam wiped her tears: ”It’s alright, this way is good too, at least he won’t suffer anymore.”
