The Comeback of the Cannon-Fodder Supporting Actress

Geng Shuhua listened to Anning babbling on about something she couldn’t understand, so she dragged Su Liang outside.

Once outside, Su Liang asked Geng Shuhua, ”Why did you pull me out? I haven’t had enough time to dote on my granddaughter yet.”

”There’s plenty of time for you to dote.”

Geng Shuhua rolled her eyes at Su Liang, ”Didn’t you see our granddaughter is studying that what... French? We might disturb her studies at home, it’s better to take a walk outside.”

”That’s true.”

Su Liang put his hands behind his back, found a sunny spot, and sat down with a smile on his face.

Soon after, a crowd gathered around him.

One person asked, ”Su Laoliu, did your son come back home?”

Another asked, ”I heard your boy opened a big company in the Capital, must be loaded now.”

Another said, ”Second Brother, could you ask your boy for a job in the Capital for me?”

Su Liang waved his hand, ”You’ve been listening to nonsense, he hasn’t opened a big company, it’s just a small one, with a few people doing renovations, doesn’t earn much, but it’s exhausting.”

Upon hearing this, the person who wanted a job stopped speaking.

The older man who spoke first laughed, ”Your boy is lucky, marrying a good wife.”

Su Liang nodded with a smile, ”Indeed.”

Geng Shuhua was also pulled aside by a few village women for a chat.

”Didn’t your daughter-in-law give birth to two daughters? Have you asked if she can have a second child? If she can, hurry up and push for a son.”

A few women were chattering nonstop, urging Geng Shuhua to have more.

Those words made Geng Shuhua furious, ”Stop giving me reckless advice. You know who my daughter-in-law is? She’s a scientist. Know what a scientist is? She researches science and technology. The phones we use now, that’s what my daughter-in-law came up with. Someone like her doesn’t have time to have kids. With the time she spends on kids, who knows what great stuff she might come up with next. Besides, my daughter-in-law is researching manned spacecraft now. That’s big stuff. Whoever dares to suggest having kids, I’ll be mad at them.”

One woman rolled her eyes, ”Then won’t your family lineage end like that?”

Geng Shuhua sneered, ”End? What age are we in? It’s almost the 21st century, and you still have those old thoughts? Have you seen the propaganda posters on the village wall? Men and women are equal, women hold up half the sky...”

At this point, Geng Shuhua laughed, ”You all don’t know how wonderful my granddaughters are, I wouldn’t trade them for ten sons. Our Mingzhu is so articulate, she doesn’t spill a single grain of rice when eating, she’s neat. Ming Yu is even more amazing, look how young she is, knows all her letters and can do math. She’s speaking English and learning French now. My goodness, with granddaughters like this, why would I need a grandson? My two granddaughters will definitely amount to something, and we’ll live in endless happiness. Besides, look at that family who had six sons, and what’s their outcome now? The couple doesn’t even have a place to stay, being kicked around by their sons. Can’t you all see the truth now?”

The words left the women speechless.

Geng Shuhua felt even prouder, ”You haven’t seen my granddaughters, they’re simply lovely, prettier than a fairy. I’ve been blessed to have such a wonderful daughter-in-law and two granddaughters. Just looking at them makes my heart sweet, like eating sugar. I honestly want to give them everything, with the two of them, that’s enough, adding more would just add chaos.”

One woman, seeing Geng Shuhua showing off, grumbled, ”No matter how great, they’ll still marry off, who knows how much others will benefit then.”

Geng Shuhua rolled her eyes, ”No matter where they marry, I’m still their grandma, they’ll take care of me.”

”Anyway, without sons, your family will end.”

The woman commented again.

Geng Shuhua laughed, ”My granddaughters are smart and accomplished.”

”No matter how accomplished, they’re someone else’s once married.”

”My granddaughters are smart and accomplished.”

”Who knows what’ll happen in the future, but daughters aren’t as reliable as sons.”

”My granddaughters are smart and accomplished.”

No matter what others said, Geng Shuhua kept repeating the same line, frustrating the women to no end.

Geng Shuhua took a deep breath before calling Su Liang to go home.

When she returned, Anning had just coaxed the little ones to sleep.

Anning came out of the bedroom and chatted with Geng Shuhua in the living room.

Anning was persuading Geng Shuhua to move to the Capital with them.

”Mom, discuss with Dad, moving over in the spring. If you feel uncomfortable staying with us, there’s a villa next to ours that A Yuan already reserved for you. Once you move to the Capital, we’ll see each other often, won’t that be comforting? Besides, after graduating, Xiao Yue and Xiao Shuang plan to stay in the Capital. With all three kids in the Capital, how could you still live here? With no one by your side, aren’t you just going to make us worried and unable to focus on work?”

Geng Shuhua lowered her head, ”I do want to go, but your dad can’t let go of everything here.”

”Dad’s getting older, can he keep farming? You’ve worked hard all your life, isn’t it time to relax and enjoy? Mom, you both adore Mingzhu and Ming Yu, don’t you want to be with them often? We barely see each other throughout the year, wouldn’t it be sad if the kids grew up and didn’t recognize you?”

When Anning mentioned the kids, Geng Shuhua felt even more tempted.

”I’ll discuss it with your dad.”

Anning smiled, ”You should’ve moved already. If you move, Xiao Yue and Xiao Shuang wouldn’t need to stay at school, it’d be much better if they stayed at home. I’ve talked to them, but they don’t listen, maybe because living with their brother and sister-in-law isn’t as comfortable as being with parents. If you move, with Xiao Yue and Xiao Shuang there, wouldn’t that be wonderful? After they marry, you can decide to stay with your son or visit your daughters, wouldn’t that be delightful?”

Anning had such a way with words, she could turn the impossible possible. Her persuasion nearly had Geng Shuhua wanting to move to the Capital immediately.

She couldn’t sit still any longer and went straight to find Su Liang to talk about it.

”I want to go to the Capital, you can stay and farm if you want, but I’m going. It’s just a few acres, let the Eldest farm them. You’re just making things hard on yourself, your son’s business is so big, does he lack your few expenses? Look at Anning’s grandma, how she enjoys life, she’s even gotten younger over the years staying in the Capital. Look at me, my face, my hands, older than hers.”

Geng Shuhua grumbled non-stop, while Su Liang smoked quietly.

After a long while, Su Liang extinguished the cigarette, ”Let’s do as you say, move to the Capital in spring, I’ll talk to Yuanzi, have him get us a place. We won’t live with them; we’ll be happier on our own.”

Geng Shuhua slapped Su Liang, ”I know what you’re thinking. You’re worried about living habits clashing with the daughter-in-law, causing conflict, right? Let me tell you, I’m not stupid. Our son was brought back halfway, we didn’t raise him for twenty-some years, so how deep can the affection be? Anning, however, grew up with him; in his heart, the daughter-in-law weighs more. If I really clashed with Anning, wouldn’t it drive my son away? I’m not stupid, would I do that? Besides, Anning’s temperament and sensibility are unmatched in this area, you can’t find another like her. She’s considerate in everything, without a fault. How could I be upset with her?”

At this point, Geng Shuhua rolled her eyes at Su Liang again, ”You’re just overthinking.”

”Anyway, we can’t live together.”

Su Liang was firm on this point.

Geng Shuhua thought for a moment, ”That’s true, living separately is fine, as long as I can see my granddaughters every day, that’s enough.”
