The Comeback of the Cannon-Fodder Supporting Actress

Uncle Su Gui from the Su family was also at Su Liang’s house. Xiao Yuan had met Grandma Su, and Su Liang introduced Su Gui to him.

Su Gui sized up Xiao Yuan: ”Good, he’s a good kid, truly worthy of being a seed of the Su family.”

Third brother Su Yong and Fourth brother Su He had matters to attend to and couldn’t make it back. Little Aunt Su Cai had some issues at her family, so she also didn’t come. Xiao Yuan met Su Yong’s whole family, while Geng Shuhua went to the kitchen to cook.

Su Liang made some tea and sat down with Xiao Yuan to chat with Su Gui.

Su Gui asked Xiao Yuan: ”I heard you’re working in the Capital now, how do you feel about it? Is it tiring?”

Xiao Yuan chuckled: ”It’s alright, not tiring.”

Su Gui continued: ”Do you have a girlfriend? You’re not young anymore; it’s time to get married. If you don’t have one, let your aunt introduce someone for you.”

Xiao Yuan quickly replied: ”I have a girlfriend; she is still in school right now. We’ll get married after she graduates, so there’s no need for the elders to worry about this.”

Su Gui paused for a moment, then laughed: ”Good boy, you’re snagging the county’s flower, huh?”

Su Liang hadn’t reacted yet.

Su Gui explained to him: ”Yuanzi’s girlfriend is that top scorer from the Yang family.”

At first, Su Liang couldn’t believe it. After Xiao Yuan nodded, he was overjoyed: ”Our Su Family’s ancestral grave must be smoking; marrying such a wife into the family, the children born will surely be smart. There’ll be no worry about becoming university students later.”

”Does the Yang family know?”

Su Gui asked.

Xiao Yuan nodded with a smile: ”They know. Initially, they didn’t agree because of the poor reputation of the Xiao Family. Now that I’ve returned home, Uncle Yang should be able to agree.”

Su Gui suddenly straightened his back: ”Indeed, no need to say more, our Su family’s reputation is impeccable. Not just in our village, but surrounding villages too, ask around, and they’ll all say good things about the Su Family.”

Xiao Yuan thought for a moment and asked Su Gui: ”My grandma said earlier, we finally have a root. Do the elderly really have such strong obstructions about their grandchildren?”

After he asked, Su Gui and Su Liang both fell silent.

It was a while before Su Gui spoke: ”Actually, your grandma isn’t too bad. Our family, including Su Yu before, has a total of eight girls. Many people in the village secretly laughed at our family. In her heart, your grandma also wanted a grandson—a holdover from older generations. Not just your grandma, your father, and your uncle all regretted not having a boy. But though they felt regret, we and your grandma never wronged the girls. Your sisters have all been to school except for the eldest sister. They finished high school, but just didn’t get into college.”

Xiao Yuan understood the Su family’s feelings.

Not just in the countryside, even in the city, who doesn’t wish for sons and daughters?

In the countryside, it’s even more notable—without a son, people will laugh at you. The four brothers of the Su family didn’t have a single son. The village people might laugh at the Su family being extinct. Under such circumstances, the four Su brothers held their ground, didn’t insist on having a son, and treated their daughters well. This clearly shows their character isn’t bad.

After eating at the Su family’s, Xiao Yuan then wanted to go with Su Liang to the town to change his residence registration and name.

Old Madam Su chased after them. She held a cloth bag and shoved it into Xiao Yuan’s hands: ”Take it, buy yourself some treats in town.”

Xiao Yuan couldn’t help but cry and laugh.

He didn’t decline, instead solemnly packed it away: ”Alright, I’ll buy chicken legs.”

Old Madam Su laughed so hard that she couldn’t stop.

Yang Family

After dinner, Anning returned to her room to rest. Just after she changed into her pajamas, she heard a knock on the door.

Anning got up to open the door and saw Su Yu standing outside, smiling: ”Can I come in and chat with you?”

Anning quickly moved aside: ”Sister, come in.”

Su Yu entered the room, and Anning brought over a chair for her to sit: ”Sister, do you want some water?”

Su Yu shook her head.

Anning went to grab some sunflower seeds.

The sisters talked while munching on sunflower seeds.

Su Yu asked Anning: ”Back at the guest house, when I said I was engaged to the Wei family lad, I noticed your expressions were odd. Is there something about the Wei family or is there something wrong with Wei Bin?”

Anning put down the sunflower seeds and thought that Su Yu was indeed perceptive, that even in such a short time, she could sense Yang Erchou’s subtle expressions.

”There’s nothing wrong with Wei Bin; he’s about the same age as you. I heard he also graduated from high school, so you guys are probably classmates. You should know what kind of person he is.”

Su Yu relaxed once she heard Wei Bin had no issues and smiled.

She and Wei Bin were indeed classmates, but they didn’t think about dating back in school.

Back then, Su Yu wanted to get into college but couldn’t after two years, so she stopped trying.

Wei Bin didn’t get in the first year and returned home to work for the family. Then the two had little contact until they were older and someone introduced them. When they met and realized they were classmates, it felt meant to be. Eventually, their mutual impression led them to confirm their relationship.

”Wei Daniu is not good.”

Anning suddenly said.

Su Yu paused: ”What’s wrong with him?”

Anning softly replied: ”You might not know, but I saw Wei Daniu in the Capital. He married another wife there.”

”What?”

Su Yu nearly jumped up in shock: ”What’s going on?”

Anning told Su Yu about Wei Daniu’s situation.

It turns out Wei Daniu is quite capable, quick-witted, and started working for others early.

Back in the eighties, he went to the Capital for work. Later, he leveraged his hardships and skills, plus saving someone’s life. Out of gratitude, that person gave him some money, which he used to form a team as a contractor, earning quite a bit over the years.

With money, many men develop ulterior thoughts.

Wei Daniu was no exception.

Wei Daniu married his wife when they were quite young. At that time, rural folks married at seventeen or eighteen, so naturally, they didn’t have marriage certificates.

Even age-appropriate couples often didn’t bother with certificates—having a wedding was enough to be considered married.

In the countryside, without a marriage certificate, Wei Daniu found a younger wife in the city, and this one was formally documented.

After marrying the young wife, they bought a house in the Capital, and she bore him a son. Their lives in the Capital are going quite well.

Su Yu listened, her face pale: ”Does Wei Bin know about his father’s situation?”

Anning shook her head: ”Who knows, but Wei Bin’s mother might know something.”

Su Yu’s face turned paler: ”Why doesn’t she confront him? Even if they didn’t get a certificate, Wei Bin is already in his twenties, making it a factual marriage. Wei Daniu’s behavior constitutes bigamy. If Aunt Wei causes a stir, he won’t end well.”

”That’s unclear—maybe she chooses to ignore it to maintain the family, or maybe Wei Daniu gave her money.”

Anning grabbed some more sunflower seeds and continued munching.

Su Yu grumbled: ”This is too incompetent. How much can Wei Daniu give her? If it were me, I’d definitely cause a scene. At least I’d demand half his assets to be satisfied.”

Anning thought with a smile, indeed Su Yu is a true daughter of the family, appearing gentle but feisty underneath.
