The Ace Bigshot Becomes A Farmgirl

The first day of the examination lasted three days. By evening, the sound of the gong struck by the examiners rang out, and soldiers at the entrance of each row of rooms shouted, ”The first round of the imperial exam is over, time to hand in your papers.”

Many people began to panic, even though the time for submission was here, there were quite a few still trying to write as fast as they could.

However, the more they rushed, the more chaotic it became, increasing the likelihood of making mistakes.

On the other hand, Meng Yunzheng remained very calm, and after his paper was collected, as others were still gathering their belongings, he was the first to leave the room.

Once outside, for the first time in days, his cramped limbs finally felt able to stretch.

He walked along the corridor, observing many candidates with frowning faces, and was the first to line up at the Examination Hall’s main entrance.

Outside the Examination Hall, quite a few people were already waiting eagerly to greet their candidates. Families who had better means had prepared blankets, hot water, food, and other items.

The gate to the Examination Hall opened, and Meng Yunzheng, carrying things in both hands, was the first to come out.

Shu Yu was quite close to the gate. She guessed he should come out relatively early, but she didn’t expect him to be the first to emerge.

Her eyes brightened slightly, and she hurriedly called to Zhao Xi and Xia Yan beside her, ”Quick, he’s coming out.”

Xia Yan ran forward, exhaling slowly upon seeing him.

Zhao Xi patted his shoulder and said with a smile, ”You look quite spirited. I’ve heard that the imperial exam consumes a lot of energy; hard to eat and sleep well. Seeing you now, it doesn’t seem as terrifying as the rumors.”

Just after he spoke, a startled cry suddenly came from behind.

”Someone fainted, quick, lift them to find a doctor.”

Zhao Xi turned his head sharply, just in time to see a pale candidate being carried away.

He was momentarily stunned, then looked at the candidates coming out one after another, all appearing exhausted and listless.

Then he glanced back at Meng Yunzheng, who appeared rosy-cheeked and stood upright, giving the impression that he was almost superhuman.

Meng Yunzheng cast him a sidelong glance and accepted the hot soup Shu Yu handed him, taking two sips.

Though he felt quite well, he was indeed tired, as the dormitory was just that big, and sleeping at night was uncomfortable.

Now with two sips of hot soup, he instantly felt much relieved.

Shu Yu handed him a warm towel to wipe his face, ”How do you feel?”

”Pretty good, thanks to the oil cloth you prepared for me, otherwise, it would have been troublesome.”

Shu Yu was genuinely happy. She knew Meng Yunzheng was teasing her, speaking as if he would have suffered greatly without her preparation of oil cloth. She didn’t believe that he hadn’t thought of that.

The few of them lingered at the Examination Hall gate for a while before seeing Xun Sheng come out.

He didn’t look well either, trembling slightly as he approached Meng Yunzheng.

Meng Yunzheng frowned slightly, saying to Zhao Xi, ”Take a look at him.”

Zhao Xi took his pulse for a moment, ”He’s caught a cold.”

”I didn’t sleep well the day before entering the exam, and couldn’t sleep these past two nights.” Xun Sheng’s lips were pale, and he smiled bitterly, ”My room had a small leak on the roof; my bedding was all wet last night.”

Everyone, ”...” Your luck really is something else.

In these times, the conditions in the exam dormitories are quite poor. After all, exams are held every three years, and once they are over, the dormitories are sealed and reopened three years later.

So, if parts of the dormitories are damaged, they might not be repaired promptly.

That’s why the first thing examinees do upon entering their dormitory is tidy up their room, but situations like Xun Sheng’s roof leak really can’t be anticipated.
