Transmigrated as a Peasant Baby Who is Pampered by All

Chapter 521: Chapter 321: Sugarcane

Early the next morning, Jiang Xiaomiao was caught by her second sister. She was almost dressing with her eyes half closed until a washcloth was pressed on her face, waking her up instantly.

”Second Sister, why so early?” She stayed up until dawn last night, and clearly wasn’t fully awake yet, right?

”It’s New Year’s Day, of course, you have to get up early. It’s been so many years, why aren’t you used to it yet?”

Jiang Xiaomiao chuckled a few times. She knew, but, oh, how comfortable it was in the quilt early in the morning.

Apparently, even Xiaoxue got used to it. That’s why she came to wake Jiang Xiaomiao first thing after getting up.

Fortunately, after washing up, Jiang Xiaomiao was completely awake.

When the two sisters came to the kitchen, everyone else was up too, but hadn’t come over yet, all busy with their tasks. Seeing their mother still kneading tangyuan dough, Jiang Xiaomiao gave her second sister a little push forward.

”Second Sister, you help mom with cooking, I’ll go help collect the eggs.”

No need to ask what everyone else was doing, though, because they were still farm folks. Even on New Year’s Day, the chickens, ducks, and geese couldn’t go hungry—they were money after all.

It was barely dawn, but having adjusted, it didn’t really matter. As Jiang Xiaomiao approached, Wei Ziang was just carrying a basket, Jiang Yu was driving the ducks and geese out, Jiang Wei and Jiang Hu were working in the pigsty.

Jiang Xiaomiao greeted everyone one by one, then went off to fry eggs with Wei Ziang.

At this time, no one had yet changed into new clothes. That would only happen after breakfast, otherwise, with all the morning chores, they’d end up smelling like chicken manure and pig feed.

After finishing the morning chores that needed to be done daily, Xiaoxue called everyone to breakfast.

According to tradition, on New Year’s Day morning, they ate tangyuan, while at noon and evening they ate leftovers from the day before. On the second day, the married daughters returned home, and new dishes would be prepared.

However, the Jiang family’s two daughters weren’t married yet, so they naturally didn’t have to return to their parent’s home.

For years, the whole family celebrated the New Year on their own, neither envying other families’ festivities nor feeling their own was desolate—with four or five children, no other family could be as lively as theirs.

A bowl of tangyuan, plus a poached egg—the glutinous rice was homegrown, and the eggs were laid by their own chickens.

Even Jiang Xiaomiao, who usually didn’t like sweets, rare as it was, finished a big bowl today.

On New Year’s Day, there’s no sweeping. After eating and washing the dishes, Jiang Hu let the children go change into their new clothes and brought out the treats they’d specially prepared.

They had prepared a lot of sunflower seeds and peanuts themselves, and there were some rarer snacks prepared by the Liu family.

On this day, the children in the village would happily go from house to house wishing Happy New Year, and the hosts would cheerfully offer a handful of treats.

Parents generally prepared a cloth bag for the children in advance, and after visiting every household in the village by noon, their bags would be bulging.

However, this activity was generally just for the younger kids; the older ones would feel embarrassed to do so.

Like Xiaoxue and Wei Ziang, they turned down Jiang Xiaomiao’s suggestion, and Jiang Yu had already gone back to the room to read.

Jiang Xiaomiao simply pulled Jiang Wei out, and as soon as they went out, they bumped into Xiaocao, who had come to find her. Hurriedly, Jiang Xiaomiao brought Xiaocao to her parents to wish them a Happy New Year, and each got a big handful of snacks and a piece of pastry, and then they ran off.

Xiaocao had specifically come to find Jiang Xiaomiao, as Jiang Xiaomiao and Xiaocao were the closest in the village. Xiaocao knew, of course, she would specifically bring Jiang Xiaomiao along to visit other households for New Year’s.

Moreover, with Jiang Xiaomiao out playing, it allowed the other kids to feel comfortable going to the Jiang family.

On New Year’s Day, the more children that come to visit, the more it showed that the family was kind and well-liked. Even those who were the stingiest and meanest on ordinary days would be generous on this day.

And more importantly, Jiang Xiaomiao wasn’t very familiar with the village yet, and didn’t quite know who were neighbors in the village and which houses had servants where they shouldn’t visit, lest they be turned away.

Jiang Xiaomiao wasn’t very interested in the snacks, but it was New Year’s Day, so she was happy to join the festivities. Along with Xiaocao, she became acquainted with most of the people in the village.

By noon, Jiang Xiaomiao’s bag was full of snacks, mostly sunflower seeds and peanuts, with plenty of pumpkin and winter melon seeds too.

Jiang Xiaomiao didn’t mind at all, and each household she visited, she happily wished them a Happy New Year and all the best, making everyone smile from ear to ear.

”Wow, Xiaomiao, how come yours is so much? We all came together, but you have way more than me.”

Xiaocao looked enviously at Jiang Xiaomiao’s bag, which was stuffed to the brim.
