Apocalypse: Master of Soul Beasts

Chapter 466: Chapter 68: Imminent_2

A massive light source was embedded beneath the Eternal Sky City, providing an endless supply of heat and light to the surrounding areas of the Yanjing Assembly Site.

Oddly enough, this massive light source would automatically extinguish at nightfall. The military claimed this was for energy conservation. To the residents of the Yanjing Assembly Site, it was like a giant streetlight had been installed in the sky.

Although this caused many inconveniences for the residents of the Yanjing Assembly Site, Lin Haifeng didn’t need anyone’s consent to install the ”giant lamp.”

Moreover, the military had made their stance clear: ”If you find it inconvenient, get lost!”

Now, in response to the demon plague, the Yanjing Assembly Site had become overcrowded with a vast population. The authorities weren’t afraid of people leaving; they were more concerned that people *wouldn’t* leave. After all, wasn’t it costly to provide food aid to these disaster victims?

Of course, only a handful dared to actually leave.

Convenient or not, nothing was more important than staying alive.

「At the gate of the outer city zone of the Yanjing Assembly Site.」

An endless stream of professionists or refugees was moving into the Yanjing Assembly Site.

This influx was due to Lin Haifeng’s policy, which allowed people from non-major assembly sites, or even major ones with inadequate defenses, to relocate to the Yanjing Assembly Site. This policy had been issued a month ago, accompanied by news about the demon plague...

The ensuing chaos, not to mention Lin Haifeng’s utter lack of concern for it, was a separate matter. After brief disturbances in various places, life had to go on, and lives had to be saved. Therefore, it wasn’t surprising that the Yanjing Assembly Site was currently experiencing such a high volume of human traffic.

Amidst this vast sea of people, a black-robed figure queued to enter the city gate, trailing closely behind another person. Then came the inspections.

”Lift your hat and let me see,” the gate-guarding soldier said to the black-robed figure.

The man in front quickly said to the guard, ”Officer, he’s my relative.”

Of course, whether he was kin or not wasn’t the real issue; the crucial point was the number of magic crystals offered.

The guard was very satisfied with the amount.

”Alright, you can enter.”

A few magic crystals were enough for the guard to let them pass without further questions.

In reality, the inspections weren’t strict at all. With so many people coming and going daily, how much manpower would be needed for thorough checks on everyone? Besides, what was there to check?

Zombies? There were none in Yanjing City, nor were any expected. In fact, some people, desperate to change their profession, were eagerly awaiting them.

Humanoid mutant beasts? None had been seen yet, though it was possible some existed. But could any mutant beast truly cause turmoil in the Yanjing Assembly Site?

Other assorted threats? To put it bluntly, if the Yanjing Assembly Site could be overthrown by something that snuck in through the city gate, Lin Haifeng might as well just die!

Besides, the outer city zone of the Yanjing Assembly Site was inherently a cesspool, a lawless place the military couldn’t—and didn’t bother to—manage. Whatever happened, or whoever died, the military wasn’t bothered in the slightest. Those with ability either survived or had already willingly joined the military. As for those without? If they died, they died. What could be done?

The truly strict security checkpoint was located at the entrance to the inner city zone.

So, nobody knew that a calamity was sneaking into the Yanjing Assembly Site...

The two walked along the dirty, chaotic streets. Occasionally, beggars or women would approach them, trying to strike up a conversation. But when the man in front produced a badge-like object and pinned it to his chest, all harassment immediately ceased.

Before long, the two entered a rather dirty, dilapidated two-story building.

”Sir, we’re here,” said the man in front respectfully, bowing slightly and indicating upstairs. ”My elder brother is waiting for you upstairs.”

”Alright.”

The black-robed man—Akad, of course—nodded slightly. Then, he thrust his hand into the guide’s chest. With a spray of blood, Akad pulled out a soft heart...

”TSK, TSK, TSK. It’s unclear how this guy offended Lord Akad, but good riddance! Since Lord Akad wanted him dead, he had to die!” Wanping’s voice echoed, followed by footsteps from the stairs. Dressed in a white robe, Wanping slowly descended with two subordinates.

”Drag the corpse out and feed it to the dogs,” Wanping ordered his subordinates, then approached Akad with a smile.

”Sir, this room is the hideout I’ve prepared for you. Although it looks a bit shabby on the outside, I’ve had my men renovate the inside. Would you like to go up and have a look first?”

Akad glanced around. The small building’s interior decoration was indeed quite good, evidently arranged with care.

Nodding slightly, Akad casually patted Wanping’s head with his blood-soaked right hand.

”Pretty good. But are you sure it’s safe?”

Even as warm, viscous blood trickled down his hair, Wanping’s expression remained unchanged. He nodded slightly. ”Absolutely safe.”

”Hmm, well done. Also, send me ten—no, twenty—people daily. Don’t bother me otherwise.”

Wanping’s smile widened. ”Sir, you may not be fully aware of the current situation in the Yanjing Assembly Site.”

Hearing this, Akad frowned. ”What? Is providing twenty people difficult?”

”Not at all, Sir! Twenty is too few. I believe that even if a hundred people from the outer city zone went missing every day, no one would bat an eye!”
