Dimensional Codex System: I'm really not a cultist!

Chapter 988: Chapter 987: You Must Catch Him for Me!

”Tap, tap, tap...”

The crisp sound of footsteps echoed in the corridor. The woman briskly walked through the passage paved with pure white marble. The magic crystal lamps sensed someone approaching and lit up in succession, illuminating the path ahead.

When she reached the door at the end of the corridor, the woman stopped. She reached out her hand to tidy her pure white long hair, then took a deep breath. Meanwhile, the door in front of her suddenly opened its eyes, staring at the female mage dressed in a blue robe.

”Please state your identity.”

”Mary Karina.”

”Received, please enter, Miss Karina.”

The elf on the door carefully examined the female mage in front of it, then the door slowly opened, allowing Mary to walk inside.

In the study behind the door, a mage dressed in a white robe was holding a book, flipping through it with an expression of amazement. He was so engrossed that he didn’t notice Mary’s approach to his side. Seeing this scene, Mary raised her eyebrows sharply, then slapped the table heavily with her palm.

”Bang!”

”Whoa!”

The sudden loud noise startled the white-robed mage, who quickly looked up in the direction the sound came from, and then released a long breath.

”Oh, it’s you, Mary. You scared me... What do you mean by that?”

”What... What kind of tone is this? Mentor!”

Seeing her mentor in such a state, Mary couldn’t help but fume indignantly.

”I’m the one who should be asking you what you mean!!”

Saying this, Mary began to slap the letter in her hand as she spoke.

”What’s this delegation about? Why do I have to participate in this? Why are you transferring me away from the White Tower?”

”Alright, alright, dear Mary... Don’t get excited.”

Seeing his student looking like she was about to leap up and bite, Douglas could only smile wryly and gesture for her to sit down.

”You see, it’s not a big deal, really... It’s like this, the Holy Spirit Knight has made a request through the White Tower, wanting to establish a Mage Tower in the Heavenly Dao Palace and needing several mages to help train apprentices. See, isn’t this a great opportunity? As your teacher, I’m very concerned about your lifelong matters...”

”Thump!”

But before Douglas could finish his words, Mary had already delivered a right hook directly to his nose, causing him to grunt and fall from his chair.

”You don’t need to worry about my affairs, and why are you sending me? What exactly do you have in mind?”

”Alright, alright, my student, your temper is as fiery as ever. It seems that being in the White Tower has spoiled you after all...”

”If you could be a bit more reliable, my temper would be ten times better than it is now! Douglas!”

”Alright, alright... But this time I’m sending you for your own good, my dear student.”

Douglas wiped the blood from his nose, and his expression turned serious once again. He then picked up the book in his hand, showing it to Mary.

”Do you know what this is?”

”...”

Looking at the book in Douglas’ hand, Mary frowned. The book didn’t have the thick cover typical of a magic book; its cover was thin, with some strange patterns printed on it, and there were many peculiar square characters that Mary had never seen before.

”What is this... A book from the Otherworld?”

As a mage, Mary was not unfamiliar with such things. The Star Realm was infinite, with countless planes connecting various worlds. Mages often traveled between planes, bringing back some odd and curious items, and in the White Tower, such mages were not uncommon.

”Exactly, but this is no ordinary book!”

At this point, Douglas suddenly became excited.

”This is a great book! It reveals the hidden truths and rules of this world, and secrets we have never noticed! Why does a ship float on water, why do apples fall to the ground, why does sound travel... We all know using an Ice Spell to freeze the ground will make it smoother, and can make an ogre dance like an idiot, but do you know the principle behind it?!”

”...No, I don’t...”

Hearing Douglas’ question, Mary was taken aback, then replied softly.

”But this book does know! Its authors are mere mortals, they have no magic power, and cannot perceive rules and truths, but they observe and dissect the world in their own way, providing us with answers from another perspective! Force! It’s all about the action of force! Why does my hand hurt when I punch the wall, why do I get slapped by Anna when I touch her butt, it’s all force! It’s action and reaction forces!”

At this point, Douglas raised his hands enthusiastically.

”We mages are omnipotent, we can move mountains and fill seas, destroy a world, warp space and time, create anything. But... What truths lie within, we have no idea! Ignorance! We’re so ignorant! We indulge in appearances, smugly satisfied with what we can do, yet we never ponder why we can do it! But this book... tells us just that!”

Douglas slapped the book on the table heavily, raising it once more.

”This... Junior High Physics!”

”Ju... what?”

”Junior High Physics, my dear student.”

Douglas adjusted his hair, then sat back down again.

”They call the study of these phenomena physics, and junior high is what they call the level of the researchers, equivalent to our apprentices... Look, this is the knowledge that world gives to apprentices, yet many of our High-Tier Mages know nothing about it, it’s a disgrace, an absolute disgrace!!”

”Then what does this book have to do with me participating in the delegation?”

Mary expressed complete confusion over the logic behind all this.

”Oh, it’s like this, my dear Mary. In fact, when our White Tower received the application from His Excellency the Holy Knight, this was the gift they sent. A gift of knowledge from another world, you know, we mages have an insatiable thirst for knowledge. Even a world without magic power can provide us unimaginable insights.”

At this point, Douglas rubbed his hands, while Mary glared at him fiercely.

”So... just for this ragged book, you sold me out?”

”No, I refused!”

Douglas shook his head sternly.

”You’re my most beloved student, of course, I can’t bear to send you away. A mere book from the Otherworld wouldn’t sway me.”

”But...?”

”But...”

Saying this, Douglas leaned down and pulled out a thick stack from under the table.

”But so many books... That’s a different story!”

”...”

”Look, this is Junior High Chemistry, High School Physics, High School Mathematics... I’ve heard the prophecy guys even got their hands on Quantum Mechanics... The alchemy fellows even obtained a mechanical device called an ’engine’ that generates power... Can you imagine? That world’s civilization can drive machines comparable to giant dragons without using magic power! It’s simply astounding! If we could unravel the secrets within, we’d become the happiest mages in the world!”

At this point, Douglas leapt to his feet and clasped Mary’s hand tightly, glaring at her fiercely.

”...What are you doing?”

”This is your mission, Mary.”

Douglas’ expression was more serious than ever.

”Your Excellency Fang Zheng’s strength exceeded all our expectations, and it’s clear he’s a master of plane travel. Maintaining a good relationship with him would provide endless benefits for our White Tower! I have received word earlier that the Speaker of Parliament has drafted a list at His Excellency Fang Zheng’s request. Do you know who’s on it? Jessica Robbit from the Protection Class, Annie Carter from the Shaping Type, Emma Delian from the School of Illusions... You should know what these names signify.”

”...”

Hearing these names, Mary’s brow furrowed slightly. She certainly knew what this meant. In fact, these individuals were among the elites of the Tower of Heaven, not only outstanding in power but also very attractive...

”The Transmutation section only has you left, and we’re counting on you! My student, other factions have already sent their jewels, attempting to use beauty to lure His Excellency... Despicable and shameless, we absolutely cannot allow them to succeed! So Mary, this task is up to you!”

Saying this, Douglas reached out and placed his hand on Mary’s shoulder.

”You must hold onto him for me!”
