System Came When the Doctor was Thirty

”Director Yao, Happy New Year!~” Song Daoneng took some time to call Yao Xin for New Year greetings.

”Song Daoneng, Happy New Year to you too. What are you up to now?” Yao Xin was in the study, taking a break after answering the call.

”I’ve gone back to my hometown. My parents are watching TV, so I took a moment to relax,” Song Daoneng said with a smile.

Yao Xin knew Song Daoneng well: ”Are you still thinking about that surgery? I’m still reviewing this patient’s data.”

”Director Yao, the on-call doctor in the department just told me that Wang Hua’s drainage is a bit much.”

Song Daoneng sounded a bit tense: ”Director Yao, this patient, is there any chance this might still fail under our care?”

”Handling pancreatic rupture is really tricky.”

Yao Xin replied: ”Post-pancreatic surgery, pancreatic fistula is the most troublesome. Some patients might even need stoma drainage for life.”

”Anyway, the patient’s life was saved... I often wonder, if Lu Cheng hadn’t been there at the time, could we have saved this patient?”

Yao Xin’s question was difficult for Song Daoneng to answer: ”Director Yao, there were probably still chances.”

”He Changxiong from Urology mentioned that the hole in the left renal artery wasn’t big, so there shouldn’t have been much bleeding.”

”And it was retroperitoneal, so the hematoma would be relatively contained.”

Yao Xin retorted: ”That’s under normal circumstances. The patient’s blood volume and blood pressure were already in bad shape.”

”To add insult to injury, we can’t just view it in the normal way!”

”Song Daoneng, how about this, you arrange my second-line shift, try to sync it with Lu Cheng’s so I can experience the kind of situation you all have been talking about firsthand.”

Song Daoneng paused: ”Director Yao, our Hepatobiliary Surgery’s second-line shifts are less frequent than the ER.”

Yao Xin said: ”Then give me a few more shifts. You guys continue normally, and I’ll be on duty when Lu Cheng is.”

”Didn’t you all tell me it’s quite tricky to work alongside Lu Cheng?”

Song Daoneng frowned: ”Director Yao, we were just stating facts, not implying that you should take shifts.”

”Aren’t we just trying to avoid criticism?”

Yao Xin laughed awkwardly a few times: ”So, you’re just thinking about avoiding criticism, about not taking responsibility, and not considering the chance to tidy things up a bit, make surgical rescues routine?”

”Right now, almost all prefecture-level city hospitals have similar scheduled surgery levels. If we want to stand out among other sister units, the best choice is to excel in emergency surgeries.”

”I’ve summarized for a long time, emergency surgery needs to be comprehensive and meticulous, not extraordinarily precise in operation.”

”Since the skill level required isn’t extremely high, we have a chance at mastering it.”

Song Daoneng asked: ”Director Yao, do you believe in Dr. Lu Cheng that much?”

Yao Xin replied, annoyed: ”It’s not about believing in him; believing in others is useless. Ever since the old director of the emergency department was forced to resign, and Director Xiao took over, our hospital’s emergency surgery level has declined significantly and has not yet recovered.”

Song Daoneng said: ”Director Yao, but didn’t Director Qian only take shifts once? It wasn’t every day.”

”It’s really a pity for Director Qian.”

Director Qian was the previous emergency surgery director at State People’s Hospital. After his resignation, Xiao Zhaoxi took on the emergency surgery director role.

Although Xiao Zhaoxi is indeed personally capable, he’s originally from internal medicine, so his surgical skills can’t compare to the specially trained Director Qian.

If Director Qian hadn’t intentionally cultivated Xiao Zhaoxi to be proficient in both internal and external medicine, the emergency surgery department would have really ’collapsed’!

”Don’t be sarcastic. Director Qian was just unlucky to encounter unreasonable people,” Yao Xin lightly scolded.

Song Daoneng said: ”Director Yao, let me ask one more thing. Even Director Qian found it bothersome and resigned himself?”

”If Lu Cheng encounters such people, isn’t there a chance he’ll falter? Hasn’t anyone in his department mentioned these things to him?”

Yao Xin, annoyed, replied: ”Do you think Lu Cheng is like you?”

”Have you seen whether he has been in the operating room during his shifts?”

”Song Daoneng, if you honestly ask yourself, if you had such a unique skill, could you keep it hidden? Could you endure the loneliness?”

”Ninety percent of surgeons who get into trouble can’t keep their hands in check.”

Song Daoneng chuckled softly: ”That would be impossible.”

”Exactly, so it’s really hard to say if Lu Cheng will follow in Director Qian’s footsteps!”

”However, if they really encounter the same situations, their choices will likely be similar, that is, not to serve any longer.”

”Those who are capable often have a certain pride. Look at how comfortable Director Qian is now, being the director at the Veterans Hospital. Less work for more money...”

”...”

Time flew by, and two days passed quickly.

Only for two days was it Lu Cheng’s ’year’. He drove back to his hometown on the morning of the first day of the New Year and rushed back to Ji City on the evening of the second day.

Because on the third day of the New Year, it was his turn again for an emergency day shift in the rescue room.

The two days Lu Cheng spent at home were hurried, but this year was different from previous ones because Mu Nanshu accompanied him.

Mu Nanshu even accompanied Lu Cheng from Long County back to Xiangzhou.

”Your parents are still at your grandparents’ home, and you just sneaked away. Is that really okay?”

”I have to work, so I had no choice,” Lu Cheng asked seriously.

Mu Nanshu said: ”My parents will stay there for a few more days. I’ll have to go back in a few days to prepare.”
