System Came When the Doctor was Thirty

The main handover in the emergency rescue room is handled by internal medicine doctors, but surgeons also need to register their operation records.

After that, no more patients were brought in, so Lu Cheng got some time to comfortably nap for an hour and a half.

At 7:35, Wang Yali woke Lu Cheng up: ”Dr. Lu, you asked me to wake you at this time to order breakfast, and then you have to prepare for the handover in the ward.”

Lu Cheng rubbed his eyes and woke up, his brain a bit foggy, looked at the time, and managed to squeeze out a slight smile: ”Okay, thank you, Yali.”

”No problem, I’m off duty now.”

”Dr. Lu, see you after the New Year,” Wang Yali said.

After completing her night shift, Wang Yali and the nurses have a two-day rest. She’s lucky and can go home now, only needing to come back to work on the second day of the New Year.

”See you after the New Year.” Lu Cheng waved to her.

Quickly ordering breakfast from a familiar owner on WeChat, Lu Cheng yawned as he entered the washroom to freshen up.

”...”

The person on duty for the second-line consultation shift with Lu Cheng is Xiao Zhaoxi. After waking up from a deep sleep, he realized it was close to eight o’clock.

He rubbed his face and walked over to Lu Cheng: ”How was last night?”

”Director Xiao, not bad, a decent number of minor debridement patients.”

”At five in the morning, we got a case of acute abdominal syndrome, it was a pancreatic hook rupture, already sent to the operating room, and the vital signs are currently stable.”

”Urology and gastrointestinal surgeries are completed; only the pancreatic procedure is left. After surgery, it’s ready to be transferred to the ICU.” Lu Cheng reported truthfully.

Xiao Zhaoxi paused for a moment, then said: ”It’s really peaceful working with you.”

”Do you have a day shift later?”

”Yes, Director Xiao,” Lu Cheng said.

”You’ve worked hard.” Upon hearing about nine debridement cases, Xiao Zhaoxi knew Lu Cheng handled them all by himself.

”But next time, if there are so many trauma patients, you can send some to the specialty department.”

”Okay, Director Xiao. If it really becomes too much to handle, I’ll call for specialist help, but yesterday the patient arrival rate was relatively even.”

Nine debridement cases earned 8.5 skill points, and an emergency surgery earned 13.7, accumulating 22.2 skill points for the night!

This yield is much higher than at Long County People’s Hospital.

After all, it’s medium-sized trauma!

The emergency surgical clinic of Xiangzhou People’s Hospital doesn’t easily admit minor traumas!

The average skill point yield for minor traumas is between 0.1 and 0.5, while medium traumas are between 0.5 and 1.0...

”Are there any inpatients?” Xiao Zhaoxi asked.

”Yesterday, two were arranged for hospitalization, I’ll write their medical records later.” Lu Cheng said.

The night shift in the ward is not responsible for writing medical records for consulting patients.

After Lu Cheng finished speaking, unexpectedly, Deng Duanniu said: ”Xiao Lu, I’ve already written the medical records... just write a ward round record before you finish your shift.”

Lu Cheng quickly asked: ”Brother Deng, wasn’t it agreed that the day shift would write it? You only needed to write the main record.”

Deng Duanniu laughed heartily, his lips curling slightly as his fierce temperament subdued with a smile: ”Well, there’s nothing else going on anyway.”

Hearing the two’s conversation, Xiao Zhaoxi left. It’s easy for the people in the department to get along harmoniously and courteously, which makes his job as director easier.

Of course, Xiao Zhaoxi understood that the reason Deng Duanniu was so helpful was mainly because he saw Lu Cheng’s capabilities.

Even he couldn’t hide Lu Cheng’s talents, and Deng Duanniu couldn’t suppress them either. It’s only a matter of time before Lu Cheng advances.

Not to mention the performance benefits Lu Cheng brings by expanding case types, in the special position of the emergency department, whoever is more capable will rise—that’s a sure thing.

The urgency of the emergency department cannot be compared to specialty departments; mistakes could result in fatalities.

No matter how adept a hospital is at social interactions, it won’t gamble with the emergency department.

Otherwise, if the mortality rate surpasses similar units, the supervisory departments above will surely come knocking.

Ultimately, as long as no one dies, everything is negotiable.

But if someone dies, the severity of medical issues escalates a few levels.

...

Deng Duanniu was also off duty, and Vice Senior Director Tian Zhiliang came over to take over the shift.

Seeing that it was Lu Cheng on duty, Tian Zhiliang immediately said: ”Xiao Lu, you’re on duty today? That’s great, just handle it yourself, I won’t interfere.”

Lu Cheng replied: ”Sure, Director Tian, if there’s anything I don’t understand, I’ll ask for your guidance.”

”Xiao Lu, oh Xiao Lu.” Tian Zhiliang’s mood was lifted pleasantly, and he went to slack off immediately.

The situation of the inpatients in the emergency surgical ward was quite stable; all were there for observation after debridement and suturing.

A few IV drips, some antibiotics for preventive anti-infection treatment, that should do.

The medical records were simple, and since Deng Duanniu had already completed them, Lu Cheng replaced the medicine, issued medical orders, and, after printing out discharge records and disease diagnoses for patients to be discharged, was able to catch up on sleep in the break room by 9:30.

Actually, it was just Lu Cheng’s bad luck; otherwise, he should’ve been able to sleep a bit in the rescue room before doing these tasks.

Lu Cheng, who hadn’t slept all night, slept until 1:20 in the afternoon, when a nurse woke him up.

A patient needed to be admitted for observation.

It was brought over by Cao Gui from the rescue room.

With a patient coming in, Lu Cheng couldn’t worry about missing lunch and quickly got up to start processing all the formalities...

The admission procedures for such patients are simple: order tests, talk, get signatures, have the patient pay, and issue medical orders.

After setting up the medical record template, Lu Cheng began to order takeout.

Just then, Lu Cheng heard a conversation outside the emergency department, the voice seemingly belonging to Song Daoneng: ”The surgery for Wang Hua is over. Whether he can make it through the critical period depends on the recovery in the ICU.”

”Alright, thank you so much, Director Song.”

”You just got out of the operating room, right? That’s a lot of hard work for you.” The patient’s family was very polite.

”Yes, the surgery just ended. Actually,” Song Daoneng hesitated for a moment before saying, ”The person who should be most thanked is Dr. Lu Cheng in the emergency department.”

”If it weren’t for him, Wang Hua might not have had a chance to enter the operating room. The situation was particularly critical at the time, with his blood pressure being below 70.”

”We have to thank everyone. We have to thank everyone.”

”My child and I were waiting at home for him to come back for the New Year, and his phone was turned off. It wasn’t until the village secretary knocked on the door this morning that we knew something happened to Wang Hua.”

”My father-in-law and I immediately hired a car to rush over.” The woman talked about her struggles.

”You’ve had a hard time too. What you need to do now is wait, and take care of yourselves. Once the patient is transferred back to a regular ward, you’ll have your hands full.”

”A ruptured pancreas, if it recovers well, fine, but if not, it could easily lead to pancreatic leaks and other complications, possibly requiring a transfer to a higher-level hospital later...” Song Daoneng said before leaving.

The woman and the elderly began asking around the emergency department about Dr. Lu Cheng’s whereabouts.

Soon, Lu Cheng saw a middle-aged woman.

”Are you Dr. Lu Cheng?” The woman knocked on the office door and asked.

Although Lu Cheng had heard her conversation with Song Daoneng, he only nodded: ”I am Lu Cheng, and you are?”

”Dr. Lu, I am Wang Hua’s wife. Thank you for saving my husband’s life.”

”The police have already talked to us, and I’ve seen the photos of my husband being taken to the hospital... I am truly grateful to you...” The woman quickly bowed to Lu Cheng upon entering.

Lu Cheng stood up: ”Sister, don’t do that, don’t do that. I already feel and hear your gratitude!”

”Dr. Lu, we’re really thankful. Just yesterday morning, I was on the phone with him; he said he was in Xiang Province, and was supposed to be home by four or five this morning.”

”My child and I were still waiting at home...”

”I told him not to drive so long, not to drive so long, but he just wouldn’t listen... He’s so careless...” The woman cried with a mix of sadness, blame, and full of love.

”Sister, don’t blame him anymore; what’s done is done.”

”Let’s just be more careful in the future; blaming won’t help. I’m sure Brother also wants to see you all.” Lu Cheng consoled her.

”The child misses him terribly, stayed up till two or three last night.”

The woman said, ”Now, my mother-in-law will bring the child over to see him, and it looks like we’ll be spending the New Year outside... We don’t even know if he can make it...”

Lu Cheng said: ”He definitely will, Sister, just calm down.”

”Go wait outside the ICU for the news; I have work to do here.”

”Alright, Dr. Lu, truly thank you... Once Wang Hua wakes up, I’ll bring him to see you...” the woman said.

”Alright!” Lu Cheng agreed with the woman.
