System Came When the Doctor was Thirty

”They’re doing great, they’ve found some people to continue playing mahjong with.”

Mu Nanshu sent over two photos: ”Three tables. Two for mahjong, one for poker.”

Lu Cheng looked and laughed, ”I told you, with Uncle Mu’s level, there are plenty of people who want to give him gifts over the holidays. It’s only back in his hometown that he’s not so popular.”

”Aren’t you joining the game?” Lu Cheng asked.

”I’m chatting with you for now. Once we’re done, I’ll go over! My mom’s calling me to the table; she’s lost fifteen hundred.” Mu Nanshu replied.

”What kind of stakes are these?” Lu Cheng asked.

”One hundred per round. Two hundred for winning, four bonus tiles, one-five-nine, each tile is a hundred.” Mu Nanshu explained.

”I can’t handle that. What we played at noon was definitely not mahjong,” Lu Cheng said, his legs shaking a bit.

With this kind of stakes, losing or winning tens of thousands in a night is no big deal.

As Lu Cheng was chatting, there was another knock at the office door.

”Dr. Lu, hello, I’m here again.” The visitor was Wang Hua’s wife, but this time she brought two kids, a boy and a girl, both quite good-looking and dressed in high-end clothes.

”Ah, hello, hello.” Lu Cheng put down his phone, placing it on the desk to avoid getting reported for using his phone.

Because Lu Cheng was indeed on his phone.

”Dr. Lu, thank you, Wang Hua’s awake. He said he’s very grateful. When he was in the emergency room, he had a bit of consciousness. If it weren’t for you, Dr. Lu, he would’ve been gone.” The woman bowed politely to Lu Cheng again.

After she spoke, her son handed Lu Cheng two fruit baskets. He was probably her older brother, looked to be in his early to mid-teens: ”Dr. Lu, I bought this fruit with my allowance to thank you for saving my dad.”

”Ah, thank you, thank you.” Lu Cheng thought for a moment and accepted it with his hands.

Lu Cheng asked again, ”But what about your allowance?”

”Dad would give it to me. If Dad’s gone, the allowance would definitely be gone too.” The boy’s voice broke.

”Don’t cry, your dad will get better.” Lu Cheng quickly comforted.

”Well, ma’am, go about your business. If Brother Wang Hua recovers well, take the kids and have a good rest. It’s New Year today.”

”I still have to be on duty.”

The woman said, ”Okay, thank you, Dr. Lu, really, thank you. If it weren’t for you, Wang Hua—”

”It’s my duty to do these things,” Lu Cheng replied.

Lu Cheng personally escorted the mother and her children out of the doctor’s office. Just as they reached the door, Lu Cheng noticed a firefighter in the debridement room grimacing while Cao Gui was washing his wounds.

The woman and her children walked away, leaving the emergency ward area.

Cao Gui also closed the door to the debridement room, blocking Lu Cheng’s view.

Although Lu Cheng could see that his New Year’s Eve was spent on duty, while many people were with their families...

But in that moment, Lu Cheng was certain that if some people are reuniting, there’s bound to be others who can’t.

For the peaceful times and the splendid fireworks, there are those braving the winds, snow, and rain to maintain ”peaceful times.”

It’s just that Lu Cheng couldn’t see them.

Like those uninjured firefighter brothers, like his cousin Lu Tao, who might be out there somewhere in the middle of nowhere standing guard in the storm...

Lu Cheng turned back and looked at Wang Hua’s monitoring records.

With his mind cleared, he happily picked up his phone, closed the floating window of the gala, and started a video call with Mu Nanshu.

Seeing the smile on Lu Cheng’s face, Mu Nanshu curiously asked, ”What did you do to be so happy?”

In Lu Cheng’s left hand, he held an apple, which he took a bite of after wiping it a few times: ”Eating an apple, it’s really sweet.”

”Bought with an allowance, not sure if from a middle or high school student.”

”Ah? Really? Then bring one back for me, okay?” Mu Nanshu said enviously.

”If you want to come eat, you can come over now,” Lu Cheng suggested.

”Stop it, soon the boss will come to give out red envelopes. What would it look like if they caught me here?”

”Remember to bring it for me tomorrow!~” Mu Nanshu laughed and said.

”Someone’s sending red envelopes in the group, I’ve got to go grab some.” Mu Nanshu suddenly said.

”Grab a lot, your uncles and aunts are all landlords.” Lu Cheng urged quickly.

The group Mu Nanshu was in was set up by Mu Leng and Yan Sangyue, and usually, the red envelopes were at least two hundred each. During holidays, it could be several thousand.

Mu Leng and some of his business friends had an agreement not to give actual New Year’s money during festivals but to send red envelopes in the group for the kids to grab, just for fun.

How much you get depended on luck, which was truly a benefit for the kids, without any intermediaries.

No one would be exchanging equal amounts back and forth.

Mu Nanshu said the worst year, out of ten packets totaling twenty thousand yuan, she only snatched three hundred and fifty-two yuan, losing big time.

...

After chatting for a while, the firefighter brother, still dressed in his gear, came in with a hospital admission form.

”Hello, doctor, should I be admitted here?” he asked Lu Cheng.

”Yes, indeed.”

”Bro, what happened to you getting admitted today?” Lu Cheng asked.

”Oh, a bunch of kids set off fireworks and burned the house. When we went to put out the fire, I got unlucky and got hurt,” the firefighter replied.

”Everyone else is okay?” Lu Cheng took his admission form, found the name and patient number, and asked quickly.

”No worries, I’m the only one who got injured on our team.”

The young man scratched the back of his head with his good hand: ”This was the easiest fire incident, I guess I’ll get a dressing down from my captain when I get back.”

”You’re really taking it hard?” Lu Cheng asked.

”Yeah, I actually fell into a ditch when our team was withdrawing...” The young man looked slightly embarrassed.

”So you’re here to keep me company for New Year’s, just like those uncles and aunts and that brother?” Lu Cheng questioned.

The young man was a bit confused, but caught onto Lu Cheng’s humor and gave an awkward smile, ”Doctor, happy New Year.”

”Just kidding, wishing you a swift recovery.” Lu Cheng took his medical records and began the usual questions for basic information before issuing medical orders and basic examinations...
