System Came When the Doctor was Thirty

Doctors paying out of pocket to save lives? Then how can they live, and how can they wholeheartedly continue to rescue patients in the future?

Of course, in the end, these expenses must fall on the responsible party, but the patient’s family might face issues like wrangling.

At the root of it, it’s still partly a financial issue.

Yao Xin, also with a senior title in surgery, had an on-call shift. He nodded at the words: ”To be precise, the emergency department’s ability to transport extreme cases to the operating room has improved, but our surgical specialists haven’t caught up in handling these extreme cases, right?”

Dou Haiqing’s eyes flickered with a smile: ”Dean Yao, that’s not exactly it. Maybe it’s just a matter of probability.”

Yao Xin was in charge of surgery and was also the deputy dean, so Dou Haiqing dared not imply Yao Xin’s incompetence.

”It’s not about sending out reports, we need to analyze the key issues and find the solutions, or should we just keep running around like this? That’s not right.” Yao Xin gestured for Dou Haiqing to clarify.

Dou Haiqing said: ”Dean Yao, I actually talked with several deputy chief physicians from the second line. They said these relatively extreme cases rarely made it to the operating room in the past.”

”Lack of reception experience in the specialized department makes handling such cases suddenly feel a bit raw.”

The survival of a trauma emergency patient depends on overcoming these odds.

Whether they die on the scene.

Whether they die during transport.

Whether they die in the emergency department.

Whether they die in the operating room.

Whether they die in the ICU.

If they make it through, then they can survive.

Yao Xin asked again: ”Dou Haiqing, have your medical department talked to the people in the emergency department? What does the emergency department say?”

”Since specialists say the number of extreme cases being sent to the operating room by the emergency department has increased, there must be a specific reason why.”

Dou Haiqing exchanged a glance with the person in charge and scratched his head, laughing bitterly: ”Dean Yao, actually the situation is still quite similar to when the Health and Wellness Committee leaders came down for inspection.”

”It is to say, Dr. Lu Cheng, who joined our hospital through the selection exam this year, has particularly outstanding personal abilities.”

”While reducing the mortality rate of patients visiting the emergency surgery department, he naturally sent more patients to the emergency operating room.”

Yao Xin frowned: ”Why is it him again? Are all our recent discussions revolving around him?”

”Our hospital is an entity, and we shouldn’t be touting individual abilities nor promoting personal heroism; we should be a large team.”

Dou Haiqing smiled bitterly and said: ”Dean Yao, actually we didn’t want to report this reason, so we have been holding back.”

”But the fact is, according to Director Xiao Zhaoxi of the emergency department, Dr. Lu Cheng’s hemostasis skills are quite mysterious.”

”The two important abilities in emergency surgery are the speed of exposure and hemostasis level.”

”Dr. Lu Cheng’s abilities in both areas are quite good, thus creating a significant gap compared to others during emergency rescues.”

”Though there is currently no official recognition of this blind visual hemostasis technique, a very few individuals have such talent.”

”Their existence is the core soul that reduces the mortality rate in emergency surgery.”

At this point, Dou Haiqing paused gently: ”Specialist doctors find it a bit troublesome, but we don’t even dare to ask Dr. Lu Cheng for any adjustment.”

”Emergency departments inherently deal with patients whose lives are on the line. Dr. Lu Cheng is not forcefully promoting himself to create personal heroism, he’s merely fulfilling his duties as an emergency department doctor.”

”So, to correct the current situation, it seems like we can only wait for many surgeons to gradually adapt and continuously improve their skills.”

Yao Xin nodded gently, then asked: ”Can the meaning be interpreted as if it’s not the inadequacy of specialists increasing the mortality rate of emergency patients, the comprehensive mortality rate of emergency surgical cases could be even lower?”

Dou Haiqing nodded: ”Based on the data we have, indeed, the number of special cases sent to the operating room when Dr. Lu Cheng is on duty is at least one-third higher than when Director Xiao is on duty.”

”This ability is quite unreasonable.” Even Dou Haiqing couldn’t help but laugh.

No choice.

If Lu Cheng was setting himself as a benchmark, actively swapping shifts with others, working extra shifts, or running outside the hospital for rescue to gain more honor, then that’s a problem with Lu Cheng’s character and motives.

But Lu Cheng hasn’t done any of this, he just works during his shifts, and when off-duty, he blends into the hospital atmosphere as fast as a rabbit.

During his shifts, Lu Cheng simply completes his duties meticulously and with high quality!

Yet even so, with Lu Cheng’s current abilities, he’s still causing a ’systemic imbalance’, what can you do about it?

In these circumstances, even if you don’t want to promote personal heroism, you must extract this factor for discussion and solution strategy.

Otherwise, as the number of authorized rescue surgeries gets higher during general shifts, and the number of failures increases, the leaders also need to frequently come out to manage.

In the hospital, both the general duty officer and the medical department are workers, but what happens when the deputy dean who’s next on duty gets anxious while handling the situation?

Deans also have to be on call, though their on-call nature is different, primarily to cover major incidents.

Yao Xin took a deep breath and said: ”Then at the next hospital weekly meeting, we will pull out this point for discussion to see if other deans or directors can come up with a comprehensive solution.”

”Dou Haiqing, do you have any good suggestions?”

Dou Haiqing glanced at Yao Xin, then looked at the working condition of the general duty, cautiously saying: ”I have an immature idea, not exactly a suggestion.”

”Speak out.” Yao Xin’s tone heightened as if about to get angry.

”Granting Dr. Lu Cheng the right to follow into the operating room might resolve the problem.”

”According to death case discussion records, this month more people died in the operating room, and the cause of death was mostly hemorrhagic shock.”

”If Dr. Lu Cheng can give them a chance in the resuscitation room, and if he follows them into the operating room, he might give those patients another fighting chance.”

”However, Dr. Lu Cheng only holds a mid-level title, typically those who can follow from the emergency department to the operating room are participating ’emergency consultations’ and must be associate senior level.”

”Or through a special approval from the hospital office, which is authorized by you, Dean Yao.”

Yao Xin pondered: ”Lu Cheng just joined our hospital, raising his authority and treatment might cause other colleagues to have opinions?”

Yao Xin knew Lu Cheng, and from a personal perspective, he was willing to do so. Because, if the conditions permitted, he too would like to invite Lu Cheng into the operating room for some ’new surgeries’!

But Yao Xin hadn’t done so yet because he did not want Lu Cheng to stand out uniquely, as it might make it harder to win over people.

Dou Haiqing said: ”I personally think it’s unlikely.”

”More work, more gain.”

”At least those associate seniors who participated in emergency surgeries from the surgical department wouldn’t have those thoughts, so as long as there’s no objection from the emergency department’s higher-ups, there isn’t a big problem.”

”Moreover, under the current reformed remuneration system, more work, more gain, the emergency department’s rescue rate, low mortality rate, work efficiency and other comprehensive evaluation system, coupled with Dr. Lu Cheng’s considerable working years and having been in the mid-level for a long period.”

”Can also convince others.”

”Now the problem is whether Dr. Lu Cheng himself is willing.”

”As I understand, Dr. Lu Cheng is relatively cautious and highly defensive,” Dou Haiqing said.

Yao Xin thought for a bit, and said: ”I’ll personally talk with Dr. Lu Cheng privately. If resolving this conflict through this method works, then we’ll solve it as soon as possible.”

Yao Xin’s thought is talent is indeed talent.

In the medical industry, as long as your clinical talent is high enough, you can never be buried.

The only ones buried are those whose personal abilities are not strong or outstanding enough to create ’conflict’!
