Chapter 400: Chapter 399: The Long Road Cut Short

Kusagakure - Land of Grass

The order swept through the crowded, aching corridors of Kusagakure’s occupied inns not as a formal military decree, but as a wildfire of sheer, unadulterated disbelief.

They were going home today.

Not tonight under the cover of darkness. Not tomorrow after an agonizingly slow recovery. Not after another grueling, multi-day march through the humid, uneven trails of the Grass Country.

Today.

The reaction across the sprawling Konoha forces was a masterpiece of organized, hungover chaos. Shinobi who had been aggressively nursing their pounding temples while dozing against their rucksacks suddenly bolted upright, wincing as the sudden motion punished their alcohol-soaked brains. Combat medics, who had been meticulously drafting resupply requests for a three-day journey, paused with their ink brushes hovering over parchment, blinking in sheer confusion.

In the courtyards, Jonin commanders rapidly repeated the impossible mandate to their incredulous squads. Chunin rushed back to their rented rooms, scrambling to cram loose gear into their travel packs. Support staff frantically nailed shut the lids on half-open supply crates, while the wounded, who had been bracing themselves for the agonizing jostle of a medical caravan, were strictly ordered to remain perfectly still and wait for immediate transport.

Kusagakure’s native civilians and local shinobi paused in the streets, watching with a mixture of awe and profound relief as the occupying foreign army began to collapse inward, forming tight, highly disciplined waves.

Within the ranks, the emotional whiplash was palpable.

Some younger shinobi openly cheered, their voices cracking, utterly thrilled that they would be spared the misery of the march. Others remained deeply skeptical, whispering that the physical teleportation of an entire standing army was a logistical impossibility that breached the very laws of ninjutsu. The veteran medical officers were the most vocal, aggressively cornering their superiors to demand the exact physics of the transition, outright refusing to let their fragile, stabilized patients be ”folded through space” without absolute guarantees of safety.

Meanwhile, the Konoha logistics officers simply looked as though their souls had temporarily abandoned their bodies. They had spent the entire, miserable morning calculating rationing schedules, mapping vanguard rotations, and balancing payload weights across the transport carts, only for the towering blonde anomaly to casually stroll in and completely invalidate hours of grueling paperwork with a single sentence.

Standing near a pile of medical gear, a hungover chunin stared blankly at his half-packed bag, a stray sock hanging sadly from the flap.

”If I had known we were just going to magically teleport home,” the chunin groaned, rubbing his pale face, ”I would have complained significantly louder about packing this morning.”

A comrade leaning against the wall beside him let out a weak, raspy scoff. ”If Alaric-san could do this the entire time, I have several deeply personal grievances to file regarding the mud we marched through to get here.”

”You can file your grievances immediately after you finish rolling that canvas,” a passing Jonin commander barked without breaking his stride. ”Move it!”

Despite the initial wave of stunned panic, Konoha was still a premier military force. Within twenty minutes, the shock evaporated, replaced entirely by the cold, practiced discipline of an army preparing to move.

At the epicenter of the mobilization, standing in the wide courtyard of the central inn, Shikaku Nara was systematically wrestling the chaos into submission.

He was profoundly tired, deeply annoyed, and operating with a terrifying, flawless brilliance.

He stood alongside Tsunade, Alaric, and the senior commanders, his dark eyes scanning the hastily compiled manifests of personnel, supplies, wounded, and lodging coordinates. With effortless tactical grace, the Nara patriarch took Alaric’s absurd, reality-breaking promise and hammered it into the rigid architecture of a functional military operation.

”We do this in nine distinct, absolute phases,” Shikaku instructed, his voice slicing through the ambient noise of the courtyard. He tapped the master ledger with his pen. ”Teleportation does not remove the need for discipline. If anything, it requires vastly more of it. One misstep, one broken formation, and we scatter our people across the continent or cause a mass panic in our own streets.”

Shikaku pointed to the medical commanders first. ”Wave One: The critical wounded and all emergency medical cases. They move before anyone else.”

He shifted his gaze down the line of officers. ”Wave Two: The stable wounded and their necessary attending staff. Wave Three: All critical medical supplies, hospital records, and field treatment equipment to ensure the receiving wards aren’t starved of resources upon arrival.”

He turned to the intelligence division. ”Wave Four: Command documents, sealed intelligence, tactical maps, and all classified material under heavy guard. Wave Five will consist of the main combat units, transported in structured, battalion-level groups. Wave Six: Support personnel. Cooks, quartermasters, clerks, and auxiliary staff.”

Shikaku paused, offering a deeply sympathetic look to the pale logistics chief. ”Wave Seven: Bulk supplies, camp equipment, weapons crates, and stored materials. Wave Eight will be the rear guard and our final security detachments. And finally, Wave Nine: A comprehensive sweep by sensory clones to ensure not a single Konoha shinobi, document, body, or supply cache is left behind in Kusagakure.”

Standing beside him in his sleek, black Vanguard uniform, Alaric watched the master strategist work, taking a slow, appreciative drag from his cigar.

”You make bureaucracy look almost graceful, Shikaku,” Alaric murmured, a faint, genuinely impressed smile touching his lips.

Without looking up from his clipboard, Shikaku let out a dry, exhausted sigh. ”Do not insult me this early in the operation, Alaric. Just focus on not dropping us into a mountain.”

Tsunade crossed her arms over her green haori, her amber eyes sweeping the gathered commanders with an uncompromising glare. ”Let me make this perfectly clear. The waves are absolute. Anyone who misses their assigned transfer window will be personally responsible for walking their ass all the way back to the Fire Country.”

The threat hung heavily in the air, instantly terrifying any lingering stragglers into absolute, flawless obedience.

”Alright,” Alaric announced, stepping away from the command group and moving toward the center of the open courtyard. ”Before we start throwing battalions through the ether, I need to prepare the landing zones. You can’t just drop an army into a civilian sector without warning unless you want a riot.”

”I’ll tell them to make room,” Alaric added casually.

Tsunade narrowed her eyes, immediately sensing the logistical nightmare hidden in the casual phrasing. ”Make room where, exactly?”

Alaric smiled faintly, the cherry of his cigar glowing bright.

”Everywhere important.”

He didn’t draw a specialized kunai. He didn’t unroll a parchment of sealing ink. Alaric merely shifted his weight, his heavy black boot pressing firmly against the cobblestones of the courtyard. With a silent, microscopic pulse of his golden chakra, a hyper-complex Hiraishin marker bloomed invisibly beneath his sole, sinking permanently into the geometry of the space.

Then, without a flash of smoke or a violent sonic boom, he simply vanished.

Space folded cleanly inward, swallowing the anomaly whole, leaving behind nothing but the faint scent of premium tobacco and displaced air.

Konohagakure - The Main Gates

The morning in Konoha was entirely routine. The village gates were open to the steady, regulated flow of merchant caravans and civilian traffic. Izumo and Kotetsu were stationed at their desks, checking transit manifests with practiced, borderline bored efficiency.

Without a single sound, the air a few feet from the guard shack warped.

Alaric materialized seamlessly into the physical world, stepping out of the spatial fold as if he had just walked through a beaded curtain.

”Ah—!” Kotetsu jumped, his chair scraping violently against the pavement as he scrambled to his feet. He stared at the towering man in the black uniform, his heart hammering against his ribs. ”Alaric-san! By the Sage, you have got to stop doing that!”

Alaric didn’t offer a witty retort. Beneath his calm exterior, his mind was actively tracing the dark, ominous threads of the geopolitical board. Obito possessed Nagato’s Rinnegan. Madara Uchiha’s shadow was stretching across the continent, and the relative safety of the hidden villages was a fragile illusion that could shatter at any moment. The time for dawdling on the road had expired.

”Prepare the hospital, the central barracks, the logistics yards, the gate records, and the secured military arrival grounds,” Alaric instructed, his voice stripped of all humor, carrying the absolute, ringing authority of a frontline commander. ”Clear the sectors immediately. I’m bringing the army home.”

Izumo dropped his pen, his eyes going wide as the sheer magnitude of the order registered. ”Bringing the army home? When?”

Alaric took a final drag from his cigar, his blue eyes cold and focused.

”Now.”

The reaction was instantaneous, organized panic.

Izumo and Kotetsu didn’t ask questions; they hit the emergency dispatch buttons on their desks. Within seconds, ANBU runners and swift-birds were deployed across the village.

Konoha shifted violently into emergency reception mode.

At the hospital, the chief medical officers screamed orders down the pristine white hallways. Wards were cleared, outdoor triage stations were erected in the courtyards with frantic speed, and hundreds of medics rushed to sterilize beds and ready their glowing, green chakra.

In the military sectors, barracks officers threw open the heavy doors to the assigned quarters, while logistics workers sprinted to clear the massive, open-air storage yards, hurriedly moving civilian carts out of the designated drop zones.

The news bled rapidly from the administrative hubs into the civilian streets.

The war force is returning. Today.

It was not a festival. There were no banners or marching bands. The atmosphere that gripped the village was a profound, suffocating mixture of overwhelming joy and paralyzing fear.

Civilians rushed toward the controlled safety barriers erected near the arrival grounds. Parents stood on their toes, their hands clutched tightly over their hearts, waiting for children who had marched off to face the Iwa war machine. Spouses leaned against the wooden fences, their eyes wide with desperate hope. Some older, veteran shinobi stood perfectly silent in the back of the crowds; they knew the brutal arithmetic of war. They knew that returning armies never returned completely whole.

Alaric watched the frantic, emotional preparations for a fleeting moment, ensuring the spatial coordinates were clear, before tapping back into his chakra network.

FLASH.

Kusagakure - The Central Inn

Alaric reappeared in the Kusa courtyard just as flawlessly as he had left.

Tsunade stepped forward immediately, her arms crossed tight. ”Is Konoha ready?”

”Ready enough,” Alaric replied smoothly, adjusting the cuffs of his black uniform.

Tsunade narrowed her eyes further. ”Ready enough?”

Alaric offered a slight, unapologetic shrug. ”The village should’ve never had something like this happen before, Hokage-sama. They should adapt.”

Shikaku let out a long, deeply exhausted sigh, rubbing his temples. ”That single sentence explains entirely too much about Konoha’s current administrative stress.”

The operation commenced.

Shikaku signaled the first wave. The critical wounded and the emergency medical personnel were carefully guided into the center of the courtyard. The tension was thick, the air heavy with the scent of antiseptic and blood. The medics were fiercely strict, ensuring stretchers were perfectly aligned, wounds were completely stabilized, and IV drips were secured.

Alaric didn’t need to physically touch every single person. He spawned three Shadow Clones, placing them at specific geometric points around the group to establish a synchronized contact chain and a localized teleportation anchor.

”Do not move during the transfer,” Alaric instructed the wounded, his voice calm and grounding. ”Keep your limbs within the perimeter of the stretchers.”

A young, heavily bandaged shinobi lying near the front managed a weak, nervous laugh. ”If I arrive in Konoha without my legs, Alaric-san, I am absolutely going to haunt you.”

”If you arrive without your legs,” Alaric replied seamlessly, his face deadpan, ”I will personally put them back on, and then I will mock you relentlessly for the complaint.”

The attending medic glared at them both. ”Shut up and initiate the transfer.”

Alaric’s clones flared their chakra.

To the wounded, the sensation was profoundly strange but entirely painless. There was no violent shaking, no nausea. There was only a sudden, quiet pressure in the air, the sensation of space folding smoothly inward like a closing book, a single, fleeting heartbeat of absolute weightlessness, and the sharp scent of Kusagakure simply vanishing.

When they opened their eyes a microsecond later, they were resting under the bright, clear sky of the Konoha hospital courtyard.

The hospital staff swarmed them immediately. Stretchers were hoisted, names were rapidly recorded onto intake charts, and the triage process began with flawless efficiency. The system worked perfectly.

Back in Kusagakure, the waves continued in rapid, relentless succession.

Wave Two departed. The stable wounded arrived at the secondary medical zones. One injured chunin openly wept when he saw the towering stone faces of the Hokage Monument looming in the distance. Another attempted to stand up to cheer, only to be immediately, aggressively shoved back down onto his cot by an irate field medic.

Wave Three materialized in the logistics hubs. A Konoha medical officer standing in the receiving yard nearly fell to his knees in sheer, weeping relief when the massive crates of desperately needed field equipment and surgical supplies appeared exactly where they were supposed to be, neatly stacked and undamaged.

Wave Four triggered the transfer of the command documents and sealed intelligence. Shikaku personally supervised the wave, ensuring every sensitive scroll was accounted for, accompanied by one of Alaric’s clones to guarantee absolute security against interception.

Wave Five was the true spectacle. The main combat units, hundreds of fully armed, battle-hardened shinobi, vanished from Kusa and reappeared in perfect formation on the sprawling Konoha arrival grounds.

As the troops materialized, the civilians waiting behind the barriers finally broke their silence. Names were shouted into the air. A mother screamed in absolute, crushing relief as she saw her son standing in the ranks, his arm heavily bandaged but his life intact. A wife scanned the sea of faces, her breath hitching until she finally spotted her husband, who offered her a tired, dirt-streaked smile.

But amidst the cheers, there was also devastating silence. A father kept looking past every arriving wave, his eyes searching the formations long after the last combat unit had materialized, waiting for a face that simply did not appear. Some soldiers returned smiling, basking in the glory of survival. Others returned completely silent, their eyes hollow, looking decades older than they had when they marched out.

The victory had returned home, but it carried its grief heavily upon its shoulders.

When Tsunade appeared in Konoha alongside one of the central command waves, the effect on the crowd was palpable. The Fifth Hokage had returned, standing tall and unbroken, having crushed an enemy nation and brought her people back. She did not linger to bask in the adulation. True to her nature, she immediately began barking orders to the perimeter guards and medical directors, her iron will steadying the chaotic emotions of the village.

Wave Six deposited the support personnel. Cooks, quartermasters, and clerks arrived, looking profoundly relieved to be standing on familiar soil.

”I have never, in my entire life, loved the taste of Konoha’s dust so much,” a soot-stained cook muttered, kissing the pavement.

Wave Seven was an absolute logistical nightmare realized in real-time. The bulk supplies, heavy camp equipment, and massive weapon crates appeared in the main logistics yard. The sheer, impossible volume of material stacked into neat, towering rows caused a Konoha logistics officer to stagger backward, looking as though his soul had permanently abandoned his body.

Alaric, materializing briefly to oversee the drop, caught the man’s horrified expression.

”Try not to die,” Alaric advised dryly, clapping the pale officer on the shoulder. ”I would genuinely hate to have to explain to the Hokage that mere logistics managed to kill you after the entire Iwa war failed to.”

Wave Eight brought the rear guard. Asuma Sarutobi materialized with his squad, looking incredibly steady, though a deep, bone-weary exhaustion lined his features. He didn’t cheer. He simply looked up at the familiar rooftops of the village with quiet, profound relief, his thoughts drifting immediately to Kurenai and the unborn child waiting safely within these walls.

Throughout the entire operation, the native population of Kusagakure could only watch in absolute, paralyzed awe.

Civilians, officials, and local merchants stood on the street corners, staring at the impossible sight of a massive foreign army simply ceasing to exist in organized, scheduled waves. The innkeepers let out quiet, deeply relieved sighs as their strained establishments were finally emptied. The local merchants were quietly disappointed, mourning the sudden loss of the lucrative, heavy-spending Konoha clientele. But the Kusa officials and local shinobi looked on with deep, professional unease. The realization that Konohagakure possessed an asset capable of moving an entire army across the continent instantaneously fundamentally altered the geopolitical calculus of power.

Standing quietly near the edge of the central square, the arrogant Kusa jonin who had provoked Alaric at the inn the previous morning watched the transfer in absolute silence.

One of his young genin, shifting uncomfortably, leaned in and whispered, ”Sensei... maybe it was a really, really good thing that you didn’t push him any further yesterday.”

The jonin did not reply. He watched another entire battalion of Leaf shinobi vanish into thin air, deciding that absolute silence was the only dignity he had left.

Before Alaric initiated the final sweep of Kusagakure, he paused. He looked around the rapidly emptying lodging district, his mind flashing back to the gaunt, starving faces he had seen in the deeper, impoverished alleyways of the village during his lunch walk.

He still refused to publicly intervene. He would not humiliate the Kusa leadership or create a grand, political charity project.

But he was still Alaric.

Moving silently, he approached the exhausted innkeeper who had hosted the command group. Without drawing the attention of the remaining stragglers, Alaric slipped a heavy, densely packed pouch of pure Ryo onto the counter. It was a small fortune, entirely untraceable.

”Make sure some of this covers the meals for the travelers, the street children, or anyone who simply cannot pay,” Alaric instructed quietly, his blue eyes locking onto the innkeeper with a gaze that brokered no debate. ”No names. No Konoha charity. If anyone asks...”

Alaric offered a faint, fleeting smile. ”...Your inn simply had an exceptionally fortunate week.”

The innkeeper stared at the heavy pouch, his eyes wide, understanding exactly enough to keep his mouth shut and nod deeply in profound gratitude.

Finally, Wave Nine commenced. Alaric’s clones systematically swept the inns, the storage warehouses, the temporary medical rooms, and the rooftops, ensuring that absolutely no Konoha shinobi was accidentally left sleeping off a hangover, and that no sensitive documents or supply caches remained behind.

With the final clearance confirmed, Alaric, Shikaku, and the last remaining rear security units gathered in the empty Kusa courtyard.

FLASH.

Kusagakure was left quiet, relieved, and slightly stunned by the sudden, echoing emptiness.

Konoha - The Command Grounds

By the time the late afternoon sun began to bleed into the horizon, casting long, golden shadows over the village, the impossible had been achieved. The entire Konoha war force was home. The grueling, multi-day road they had expected to suffer had been violently cut short.

Once the immediate chaos of the final arrivals was under control and the troops were filtering back to their families and barracks, Tsunade cornered Alaric near the command tents.

She looked exhausted, but her amber eyes were sharp, evaluating the man who had just saved her military thousands of man-hours and logistical nightmares.

”The agreement stands,” Tsunade confirmed, crossing her arms. ”Two weeks of absolute leave.”

Alaric smiled, a bright, deeply satisfied expression crossing his face. He rolled his shoulders, his mind already drifting toward the quiet luxury of the Kenway Compound and the prospect of doing absolutely nothing.

”But,” Tsunade added, holding up a finger to stall his departure, ”the conditions remain absolute. If Konoha is attacked, your leave ends. If Obito or Madara appear, it ends. If the Akatsuki makes a major move, it ends. If I send an emergency summons, you answer it instantly. You remain reachable. And you do not disappear into another impossible, world-altering project without notifying me.”

”I accept,” Alaric nodded smoothly, entirely unfazed by the boundaries. He was already taking a step backward, preparing to bend space and vanish to his couch.

”Hold on.”

Shikaku Nara stepped up beside the Hokage, his hands tucked deeply into his pockets. He looked at Alaric with the dry, merciless satisfaction of a bureaucrat watching justice occur.

”You still owe the official mission report, Alaric,” Shikaku reminded him, his voice flat.

Alaric froze mid-step, his blue eyes widening slightly. ”What?”

”Two weeks,” Tsunade smiled, a brilliant, viciously sweet expression that mirrored Shikaku’s. ”Starting after you submit your report.”

Alaric looked slowly between the Godaime Hokage and her Chief Strategist, his expression perfectly capturing the profound, agonizing betrayal of a man who had just been stabbed in the back by his own allies.

”I need a comprehensive summary of the war,” Tsunade listed off, ticking the items on her fingers with sadistic glee. ”The exact details of ōnoki’s surrender, the full context of Amegakure and Pein, the specifics of Obito stealing the Rinnegan, your warnings regarding Madara’s potential revival, the complete teleportation logistics records, and your tactical recommendations going forward. Then, and only then, does your leave begin.”

Alaric stared at her, utterly appalled.

”That is not a mission report,” Alaric deadpanned, his voice dropping into a hollow, offended monotone. ”That is an encyclopedic memoir.”

”Then you had better start writing quickly,” Shikaku replied without missing a beat, turning his back to head toward the administrative offices.

And somewhere between the distant ringing of the hospital bells, the tearful embraces of reunited families, and the towering mountain of parchment waiting for him like a second, infinitely more terrifying battlefield, Alaric Jonathan Kenway realized with deep, personal offense that he had saved an entire army from the long road home, only to be ruthlessly ambushed by paperwork.
