Chapter 393: Chapter 392: The Ice Demon and the Will of Stone

Previously

”Save the pleasantries, kid,” Ōnoki spat, his hands balling into fists as his chakra flared, a visible, suffocating aura of power pressing down upon the shattered camp. ”We are in a war against each other. There is no honor here today... only survival.”

Haku slowly straightened his posture, his polite smile fading into an expression of serene, absolute finality. He raised a single, delicate brow, absorbing the Kage’s raw hostility before giving a slow, acknowledging nod of his head.

Without breaking eye contact, Haku raised his right hand, bringing his fingers together in a single, solitary seal.

”Ice Rain.”

Now - Iwagakure War Camp - Land of Grass

”Ice Rain.”

The invocation was quiet, almost a whisper, yet it carried over the roar of the dying war camp with terrifying clarity.

High above the shattered ramparts and burning tents, the bruised evening sky began to glitter. It did not look like an attack at first; it looked like shattered glass or pale ash drifting lazily through the thick, choking smoke. But as the crystalline shards descended, they accelerated, catching the light of the fires before striking the earth with the shrieking velocity of fired bullets.

The first needles punched cleanly through whatever armor the Iwa shinobis had and the canvas roofs of collapsed medical tents. They buried themselves deep into the muddy, blood-soaked earth, flash-freezing the soil upon impact in expanding webs of white frost. Iwa shinobi cried out as the senbon pinned their limbs to the ground, while advancing Konoha vanguard squads flinched as the diamond-hard needles struck mere inches from their boots.

It took only a fraction of a second for the seasoned commanders of the Leaf to realize that Haku was not merely unleashing a barrage of indiscriminate slaughter. The Ice Rain was falling in a calculated, perfectly expanding ring, aggressively carving a perimeter through the chaos of the battlefield. It was a surgical separation.

Standing calmly upon the broken remnants of the primary earth wall, Haku did not raise his voice, yet the dense, chilling chakra saturating the air ensured his words reached the ears of his allies.

”Leaf shinobi, pull back beyond the frozen line,” Haku instructed, his tone remaining gentle but laced with an absolute, undeniable authority. ”Anyone who remains within this radius will be treated as part of the battlefield.”

The Konoha forces did not hesitate. They recognized the teal-clad anomaly, and they could feel the suffocating, lethal pressure dropping the ambient temperature by the second. Abandoning their immediate skirmishes, squad leaders barked sharp commands, dragging their wounded comrades backward through the mud until they cleared the perimeter of falling ice.

Hovering fifty feet in the air, Ōnoki of Both Scales observed the deliberate clearing of the field. His weathered face tightened in fury, but his brilliant, veteran mind instantly recognized the necessity of the boy’s action. If they fought at their true capacity amidst the clustered infantry, they would annihilate their own respective armies.

The Third Tsuchikage ascended higher, his chakra roaring as he swept his hands outward.

”All Iwa shinobi still breathing, fall back behind the western ridge!” Ōnoki’s voice thundered, cracking like splitting bedrock across the ruined camp. ”Carry the wounded! Do not stand between me and the Ice Demon unless you are eager to become dust and frozen meat!”

A few veteran Iwa-nin hesitated, their pride warring violently with their survival instincts, unwilling to abandon their Kage to fight a lone Konoha operative.

Ōnoki snarled, his hands flashing through a rapid sequence of seals. ”Move!”

With a violent rumble, the earth obeyed its master. Massive, curved canopies of solid rock and jagged defensive ribs erupted from the soil, violently shifting the terrain to form heavy, protective tunnels over his retreating men. The stone barricades shielded the Iwa forces from the lingering Ice Rain, physically funneling them away from the epicenter of the duel.

Within a minute, the heart of the Iwagakure war camp had been completely hollowed out. What remained was a vast, circular arena of frozen mud, shattered barricades, scattered corpses, and burning timber, ringed in the distance by the fearful, watchful eyes of two great armies.

Ōnoki did not immediately draw upon his Dust Release. He had survived the era of Madara Uchiha and the Second Hokage by never revealing his absolute lethality before taking the full measure of his opponent’s speed.

He tested the waters with the earth.

Flicking his wrinkled hands through a blinding sequence, Ōnoki unleashed a relentless, cascading barrage of high-level Earth Release.

From the frozen mud beneath Haku’s sandals, razor-sharp stone spears erupted with lethal velocity. Simultaneously, two colossal, curved slabs of earth tore themselves from the ground on either side of the boy, slamming inward like the jaws of a crushing vice. Before the dust of the collapsing slabs could even settle, Ōnoki manipulated the shattered remnants of his own barricades, firing a volley of ultra-dense boulders through the air like screaming cannonballs.

Haku did not vanish; he flowed.

Zero Friction.

A microscopic, flawless plate of ice bloomed into existence beneath his left sandal at the exact millisecond his foot required a surface. He pushed off the ethereal foothold, his body accelerating instantly without the burden of atmospheric drag. He slid effortlessly between the erupting stone spears, his teal kimono fluttering as he twisted his torso low to the ground. When the crushing slabs slammed together, Haku was already airborne, utilizing an angled plate of ice manifested against the empty air to violently redirect his momentum sideways.

He skated through the three-dimensional space of the battlefield as if the very laws of physics had granted him exclusive immunity.

As he wove through the incoming boulder volley, Haku flicked his wrists. Dozens of Ice Senbon shrieked upward toward the hovering Kage. He didn’t expect them to be lethal; he was actively measuring the Tsuchikage’s reaction parameters.

Ōnoki drifted backward, utilizing small, shifting plates of rock to deflect the needles. The senbon shattered against his hasty earth armor, instantly freezing small, localized patches of stone that cracked under the sudden thermal drop.

’His speed is not a standard body flicker,’ Ōnoki analyzed, his dark eyes tracking the impossible angles of Haku’s movement. ’It is entirely frictionless and terrifyingly directional. He creates his own terrain as he moves.’

To disrupt the boy’s footing, Ōnoki slammed his palms downward, releasing a massive cloud of abrasive, chakra-heavy rock dust that coated the frozen battlefield, intending to grind away the smooth perfection of the ice.

Haku responded by taking to the air.

Sliding beneath a final, massive boulder, Haku twisted his body so low that his wide sleeve brushed the frosted mud, before launching himself diagonally upward from a sudden, mid-air ice step. He closed the vertical distance with terrifying silence, drawing the Kusanagi from its sheath in a smooth, frictionless arc.

’Wind Style: Infusion.’

The straight-bladed ninjatō began to hum, emitting a thin, dangerous sound that resembled tearing silk as hyper-compressed wind chakra coated the edge, granting it the power to sever matter at the molecular level.

Haku did not swing wildly. His kenjutsu was a masterclass in elegant, economical lethality. He targeted the precise gap where Ōnoki’s neck met his shoulder, his footwork explosive despite being entirely airborne.

Ōnoki’s eyes widened a fraction. ’Light-Weight Rock Technique!’

The Tsuchikage drastically reduced his own physical mass, allowing his body to flicker backward through the air with a sudden, jarring burst of speed that defied his ancient frame. Haku’s blade missed the killing blow by a mere millimeter, but the shrieking wind chakra sliced cleanly through the heavy fabric of Ōnoki’s collar, leaving a thin, stinging cut across the old man’s cheek.

Before Haku could reverse his grip for a secondary strike, Ōnoki retaliated with veteran cruelty.

’Added-Weight Rock Technique!’

Ōnoki didn’t target the boy directly; he targeted the massive stone platform hovering just above Haku’s airspace. The stone instantly multiplied in mass, becoming monstrously heavy as it dropped like a continent-crushing guillotine.

Ice Release: Mirror Step.

Haku manifested a slanted surface of ice, rebounding violently downward just as the colossal stone platform obliterated the space he had occupied. The impact crushed the frozen earth below, sending a shockwave of mud and shattered corpses flying across the clearing.

They separated, a heavy, mutual realization settling between them.

Ōnoki wiped the thin line of blood from his cheek, his gaze hardening. If that blade reached him cleanly, he would die.

Haku landed softly on a cracked pillar, adjusting his grip on the Kusanagi. If Ōnoki managed to perfectly time his weight manipulation, a single localized hit would shatter his bones.

Seeking to overwhelm the boy’s defenses, Ōnoki unleashed a rapid-fire sequence of compressed stone bullets, intertwining them with residual fire jutsu left burning from the earlier vanguard clash, manipulating the battlefield’s lingering elements.

Haku did not dodge. He summoned partial, angled mirrors of pristine ice in precise, mathematical locations across the air.

One mirror caught a screaming stone bullet, absorbing its kinetic force and violently redirecting it into an incoming boulder, shattering both. Another slanted mirror caught a stray fireball, bouncing the roaring flame harmlessly up into the night sky. A third mirror intercepted a massive earth spear, shifting its trajectory by thirty degrees so it pierced the ground harmlessly beside Ōnoki’s hovering form.

Ōnoki studied the display, his strategic mind working furiously. ’Those mirrors are not mere walls. They are directional weapons. He manipulates angles to steal my momentum and punish linear strikes.’

Feigning a momentary lapse, Ōnoki deliberately fired a heavy earth barrage at a wide, highly predictable angle, baiting the boy into reflecting it. The moment Haku formed a mirror to catch the strike, Ōnoki triggered a cluster of hidden rock fragments buried in the mud directly behind Haku’s position. The reflected force slammed into the trap, detonating the stone shrapnel into Haku’s unprotected back.

Haku barely engaged Zero Friction in time, bursting sideways as jagged stones clipped the edge of his teal kimono, proving the Tsuchikage was already adapting to his esoteric defenses.

Ōnoki rose higher into the sky, his expression darkening into a mask of pure, absolute eradication. He brought his hands together, his palms glowing with a blinding, transcendent white light.

The cacophony of the distant armies seemed to fade entirely, drowned out by the terrifying, pure silence of the technique forming between the Kage’s hands. A small, perfect, semi-transparent cube materialized, humming with a wrongness that made the hairs on Haku’s arms stand on end.

Haku knew instantly what it was. This was not earth, fire, or wind. This was the pinnacle of elemental fusion.

He remembered Alaric’s casual, yet brutally absolute warning before they came here: ’Do not block Particle Style, kid. Do not test it with your mirrors. Do not let your pride make you curious. If it touches you, you cease to exist.’

Ōnoki fired.

The Dust Release beam did not travel; it simply occupied the space between them in an instant.

Haku moved before the technique was even fully released. He spawned three sequential ice steps in a staggered, jagged pattern, utilizing Zero Friction to burst diagonally downward, twisting his body violently through a partial mirror angle to abruptly alter his momentum.

Even with his impossible speed, the beam grazed him.

There was no explosion. There was no kinetic impact or spray of blood. There was simply absence. The beam cleanly erased the outer edge of Haku’s left sleeve, a long lock of his dark hair, and carved a shallow, perfectly smooth trench into the flesh of his upper arm. The wound didn’t bleed immediately; the matter had simply been atomized.

Behind Haku, the beam continued its path, carving silently through a frozen earth wall, a broken Iwa watchtower, and a distant cliff face, leaving behind a smooth, horrifyingly perfect white scar of absolute nothingness.

A collective gasp of horror rippled through the observing armies.

Haku landed lightly on the frosted mud, his breath hitching slightly as the delayed sting of the bloodless wound finally registered. For the very first time in the engagement, a visible tightening appeared around his dark eyes. He understood, viscerally, exactly how close he had just come to total erasure.

”Do not mistake age for blindness, boy,” Ōnoki called down, his voice echoing with the heavy, unyielding pride of Iwagakure. ”I have watched men far faster than you die on the battlefield because they foolishly believed that speed was the exact same thing as wisdom.”
