Chapter 362: Chapter 361: The Ice Demon in the Falls

The Land of Waterfalls - Elemental Nations

The Land of Waterfalls was a treacherous, beautiful paradox. It was a country defined by the deafening, perpetual roar of cascading rivers and the suffocating density of its ancient, weeping forests. The air here was perpetually saturated with mist, hanging heavy in the lungs and clinging to the skin like a damp shroud.

For a normal shinobi, it was a logistical nightmare. The humidity disrupted fire jutsu, the muddy terrain hindered rapid footwork, and the constant ambient noise of rushing water rendered standard auditory tracking completely useless.

For Yuki Haku, however, it was an absolute paradise.

It was approaching eight o’clock in the evening. The thick canopy overhead had already swallowed the last bruised remnants of the sunset, plunging the deeply forested valley into an oppressive, watery twilight.

Haku sat comfortably on the exposed, moss-draped root of a massive cedar tree, his legs crossed beneath his teal combat kimono. He was operating entirely alone, a solitary phantom unleashed behind enemy lines. His mission parameters, dictated by the brilliant, ruthless calculus of Shikaku Nara, were brutally simple: operate without boundaries, engage without hesitation, and systematically cull any individual wearing the earth-brown uniform of Iwagakure.

There was no campfire. To light a flame in a warzone was to invite an artillery strike. Instead, Haku sat in the dark, quietly unwrapping a sealed packet of field rations.

He took a slow, methodical bite, his dark eyes scanning the misty perimeter. The ration was not the dry, tasteless, chalk-like soldier pill standard to most military deployments. Thanks to Konohagakure’s newly overflowing, seemingly infinite war chest... courtesy of Alaric’s forceful economic negotiations with the Fire Daimyo... the Leaf shinobi were operating on premium, high-calorie sustenance. The meal in his hands was rich, seasoned, and tasted distinctly of the village’sculinary perfection.

’Sensei truly spoils the village,’ Haku mused softly, chewing the savory meat with a faint, appreciative smile. ’To eat like a noble while sitting in the mud of enemy territory... it certainly makes the grim work more tolerable.’

He swallowed, letting out a long, quiet sigh that materialized as a puff of white fog in the chilled air.

He didn’t genuinely want to go hunting tonight. He had spent the better part of the last forty-eight hours roaming the treacherous borders, dismantling Iwa reconnaissance teams and supply caravans with mechanical, terrifying efficiency. Because this was a theater of war and not a flashy exhibition in a Chunin Exam, Haku had abandoned all pretense of spectacle. He didn’t waste his vast reserves summoning colossal ice dragons or erecting majestic, impenetrable mirror domes.

He fought with absolute, suffocating minimalism. He utilized his frictionless speed to bypass guards, employing microscopic needles of hyper-compressed ice to sever brainstems and puncture carotid arteries before the victims even knew they were bleeding. He conserved his chakra religiously, operating as a localized natural disaster that left no survivors to report his tactics.

It was effective, but it was profoundly tedious.

Haku was just about to finish the last morsel of his meal, brushing a stray crumb from his sash, when his hands suddenly stilled.

Beneath the deafening roar of a nearby waterfall, his passive sensory net... sharpened to an impossible edge by his Ashura’s Crest... twitched violently. He didn’t hear them, but he felt the subtle, erratic disruption of the ambient moisture in the air roughly half a mile to the west.

’Six signatures,’ Haku diagnosed instantly, his brown eyes narrowing into sharp, predatory slits. ’Moving in a standard hexagram tracking formation. Iwa-nin.’

Without wasting a single microsecond, Haku moved.

He didn’t scramble or rush. With practiced, elegant fluidity, he swept his ration wrappers into a small storage seal on his wrist, erasing all physical evidence of his meal. He suppressed his internal chakra coils, drawing his vast, oceanic reserves down until he radiated no more energy than a dormant stone.

With a silent, effortless flex of his calves, he bounded upward. He cleared thirty feet in a single leap, catching the thick, overhanging branch of the cedar tree and pulling himself into the darkest, most impenetrable cluster of weeping foliage.

He crouched perfectly still against the bark, blending seamlessly into the shadows as he waited for the prey to walk into the trap.

Less than a minute later, the thick brush at the edge of the clearing parted.

Six shinobi, clad in the unmistakable brown and red uniforms of Iwagakure, stepped cautiously into the damp clearing. They moved with the tense, jerky paranoia of men who knew they were walking through a graveyard.

”Shit... his presence disappeared!” the point man cursed, his hands glowing with a faint, sensory chakra as he swept the immediate area. He turned to the burly, scarred man leading the squad, frustration and rising panic evident in his voice. ”The trail goes completely cold right here, Captain.”

”Are you absolutely sure?” one of the flank guards hissed, his eyes darting frantically toward the dark tree line, his hand gripping the hilt of a heavy broadsword. ”He could’ve just escaped somewhere fast. We’re tracking a ghost, Koji. He might already be a mile away.”

”No, it ended exactly here,” the sensor insisted, dropping to one knee to press his palm against the damp soil, desperately searching for a lingering footprint or a trace of ice. ”I can’t sense him anymore. It’s like he just evaporated into the mist.”

High above them, concealed by the canopy, Haku looked down at the squad. He tilted his head slightly, a quiet, professional respect acknowledging their skill.

’They have quite a good sensor,’ Haku thought, his hand drifting smoothly toward the hidden pouches on his forearms. ’To track my ambient displacement this far through the heavy humidity of the falls... Iwagakure bred competent hounds.’

”If you can’t sense him anymore,” the Captain spoke, his gruff voice cutting through the rising panic of his subordinates. The veteran shinobi drew a pair of heavy trench knives, his eyes sweeping the ground before slowly, terrifyingly, tilting upward toward the canopy. ”It means he didn’t run. It means he’s hiding somewhere nearby. Circle up! Eyes on the trees!”

The rest of the Iwa shinobi tensed violently. The terrifying realization struck them all simultaneously. They weren’t hunting the monster; the monster had stopped to hunt them. They slammed their backs together, forming a tight, defensive ring, weapons drawn and pointed outward into the gloom.

Haku raised a single, delicate brow.

A soft, genuinely polite smile touched his lips. It was almost a shame to extinguish men with such sound tactical instincts.

He stepped off the branch.

He didn’t dive; he merely allowed gravity to claim him, a graceful, teal silhouette dropping silently under the pale light of the moon.

As he fell headfirst through the damp air, Haku didn’t reach for his Kusanagi. Instead, with a microscopic pulse of his kekkei genkai, the ambient moisture surrounding his hands violently crystallized. Five hyper-compressed, razor-sharp senbon of pure ice materialized effortlessly between his knuckles.

He waited until he was mere meters above the center of their defensive ring, perfectly framed against the moonlight filtering through the gap in the trees.

Then, he spun.

It was a maneuver of breathtaking, lethal ballet. Utilizing a fractional burst of wind chakra to accelerate his rotation, Haku became a horizontal blur of motion mid-air. He whipped his arms outward, releasing the ice needles with the velocity of fired bullets.

Thwip-thwip-thwip-thwip-thwip.

The execution was mathematically flawless. Five needles found five specific targets. They pierced the jugulars and the bases of the skulls with zero resistance, bypassing the heavy flak jackets entirely.

Five Iwagakure shinobi collapsed simultaneously, their bodies hitting the muddy earth like severed puppet strings before their brains could even process the agonizing sting of the ice.

Haku landed softly in the dead center of the clearing, his boots making a faint squelch in the mud. He slowly stood up, intending to wipe his hands, when his eyes caught a subtle movement to his right.

”Hm...”

Haku turned his head, his polite smile fading into an expression of mild, clinical disappointment.

The squad Captain was still standing. The veteran Iwa-nin was breathing heavily, his eyes wide with absolute, unadulterated horror. In a desperate, blind reflex, he had raised his thick trench knives, crossing them over his throat. The ice senbon meant for his carotid artery had struck the dense steel, shattering into harmless frost against the blade.

”You survived...” Haku murmured, walking slowly toward the trembling man, his footsteps deliberate and unhurried. ”That is a testament to your reflexes. However... this is not good. It breaks the efficiency of my routine.”

”...Haku Yuki,” the Captain ground out, his voice shaking as he stared at the boy who had just slaughtered his entire elite tracking squad in a single, silent breath. He gripped his knives so tightly his knuckles turned white. ”The Ice Demon of Konoha.”

The Captain knew he was dead. But the stubborn, rocky pride of the Stone Village refused to let him die paralyzed by fear. He took a hasty step backward, creating just enough distance to drop his knives and slam his hands together, his fingers blurring through a frantic sequence of earth-natured seals.

”I’ll have your head tonight!” the Captain roared, attempting to manifest his rage into a lethal construct. ”Doton: Dum—!”

SQUELCH.

The wet, sickening sound interrupted the roar, echoing loudly in the quiet clearing.

”...Huh?”

The Iwa Captain paused mid-seal, his thick brows furrowing in profound confusion. The jutsu died in his coils. He blinked, an odd, breathless numbness suddenly blooming in the very center of his chest. It didn’t hurt... not yet. It just felt incredibly cold.

Slowly, with trembling hesitation, the Captain looked down at his own torso.

He was horrified to discover a beautifully crafted, jagged kunai made entirely of pristine, blood-stained ice plunged to the hilt directly through his sternum, perfectly bisecting his heart.

A choked, wet gasp escaped his lips. He looked back up, desperately searching for the boy who had been standing five meters away.

But as he stared at Haku, the teal-clad figure began to waver. The edges of the boy’s silhouette fractured, distorting like a reflection in a disturbed pond, before silently dissolving into a cloud of harmless, freezing mist.

It was an afterimage. An optical illusion left behind by a speed that completely outpaced the brain’s ability to process light.

”I’m sorry...”

The voice did not come from the mist. It was a soft, apologetic whisper, murmured directly into the Captain’s right ear.

The Iwa shinobi’s eyes widened to the absolute limits of their sockets. He rigidly turned his head slightly to the back, his peripheral vision catching the true form of the anomaly.

Haku was standing directly behind him, his hand still resting lightly on the pommel of the ice kunai he had just driven through the man’s back and out his chest. Haku’s face was serene, perfectly cold, and entirely devoid of malice or joy.

”It’s nothing personal, shinobi-san,” Haku whispered gently, stepping back and withdrawing his hand.

With that final, polite dismissal, the Captain’s eyes rolled backward into his skull. The structural integrity of his legs vanished, and he dropped heavily to the wet earth, dying instantly from the catastrophic hemorrhage before he even hit the ground.

Silence returned to the weeping forest, punctuated only by the distant roar of the waterfalls and the steady dripping of moisture from the leaves.

Haku stood amidst the six fresh corpses, his expression neutral as he raised his hand, allowing the bloody ice kunai lodged in the Captain’s chest to violently sublimate into harmless vapor. He didn’t enjoy the slaughter, but he accepted it with the stoic pragmatism Alaric had drilled into his soul. War was a bloody ledger, and he was simply balancing the books.

’That makes my four hundred and forty-seventh kill for this deployment...’ Haku calculated silently, letting out a long, weary sigh.

He looked around the bloodied clearing, the metallic scent of death already beginning to attract the nocturnal scavengers of the woods.

’The sensory net of Iwagakure is tightening,’ Haku deduced, shaking his head. ’If they are sending dedicated tracker squads to hunt my perimeter, it means my current operational zone is compromised. I should probably find a new, elevated hiding spot to mask my residual chakra, and then formulate a direct strike against their secondary supply camps tomorrow.’

He adjusted the sash of his kimono, fully intending to activate his Zero Friction to vault out of the valley and vanish into the night.

He took a half-step forward.

Then, he stopped.

The blood in Haku’s veins turned to ice. Every single instinct, every sensory fiber honed by the Ashura’s Crest and years of facing literal monsters, flared with a violent, deafening alarm.

He didn’t move his head, but his dark eyes darted toward the southern ridge.

’What...’ Haku thought, his breath hitching slightly in his throat.

Pressing into the absolute limits of his extended sensory range were two chakra signatures. They were not attempting to hide. They were not attempting to mask their approach. They were moving with a slow, deliberate, and terrifyingly arrogant pace.

But it wasn’t their lack of stealth that paralyzed the Ice Devil; it was the sheer, incomprehensible density of their energy. The signatures felt heavy, dark, and overwhelmingly lethal... oceans of concentrated power that made the six elite trackers he had just slaughtered feel like flickering candlelights.

And they were heading precisely, unerringly, toward his exact coordinates.

Haku’s hand slowly, instinctively drifted toward the hilt of his Kusanagi. His polite, serene demeanor vanished, replaced by the cold, absolute focus of an apex predator realizing it had just been cornered by something larger.

’Another set of trackers this time?’ Haku wondered, his mind racing through the Bingo Book files Alaric had forced him to memorize. ’No... these aren’t mere trackers. This feels like a natural disaster walking through the woods.’
