Chapter 385: Chapter 384: The Sins of the Vessel and the Master’s Feast

Amegakure - The Central Tower

The pale, ethereal light of the moon spilled across the wooden floorboards of the tower’s highest chamber, casting long, stark shadows that seemed to hold their breath.

Alaric Jonathan Kenway stood over the seated form of Nagato, the small, heavily warded glass jar resting casually in his left hand. With his right, he lifted the pair of pristine, ripple-patterned Rinnegan eyes from the preservation fluid. He didn’t use surgical tongs or sterilized scalpels; his bare fingers were coated in a dense, glowing sheath of golden-green medical chakra that purified the air around them, rendering physical tools entirely obsolete.

Nagato sat rigidly on the wooden stool, his back perfectly straight, his hollow eye sockets turned upward. He had endured the agonizing extraction of his previous eyes without a scream, having spent decades bathing in pain, yet the sheer, suffocating proximity of Alaric’s fathomless power made the hairs on the back of his neck stand on end.

”Hold perfectly still,” Alaric murmured, his voice dropping into a clinical, absolute register. ”This requires a bit of esoteric wiring.”

He stepped into Nagato’s personal space, his towering frame blocking out the moonlight. With movements so fluid and precise they bordered on the artistic, Alaric guided the first divine eye into the empty left socket.

It was not a crude insertion. Alaric didn’t simply push the ocular orb into the flesh; he commanded the biology to yield and weave. His golden chakra acted as millions of microscopic, luminous threads, aggressively seizing the severed optic nerves and splicing them directly into the back of the Rinnegan. He knitted the fragile blood vessels together, harmonizing the foreign genetic tissue with the overwhelming, torrential flow of the Uzumaki’s life force.

He repeated the process with the right eye, his focus absolute, the geometric crimson pinwheels of his Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan spinning lazily to track the molecular integration of the transplant.

Everything was proceeding flawlessly. The eyes were seating perfectly, their chakra pathways locking into Nagato’s brain with terrifying, seamless efficiency. It was a surgical masterpiece that would have left the greatest medical shinobi of the era weeping in sheer inadequacy.

But as Alaric finalized the connection, sealing the last microscopic nerve ending, a sudden, sadistic spark of mischief danced in his eyes.

With a subtle, deliberate flick of his index finger, Alaric channeled a sharp, jagged spike of raw, unfiltered lightning chakra directly into the newly connected optic nerve.

”Ugh—!”

Nagato violently flinched, a harsh, guttural grunt tearing from his throat as he gripped the edges of the wooden stool. His entire body went rigid, his knuckles turning white as a sudden, blinding flare of white-hot agony shot through the back of his skull. It felt as though a heated needle had been driven directly into the center of his brain, completely bypassing his legendary pain tolerance.

Alaric withdrew his hands, slipping them casually into the pockets of his flak jacket as he stepped back, a deeply amused, unapologetic smirk curving his lips.

”Hurts a little bit, doesn’t it?” Alaric drawled, his tone utterly devoid of sympathy.

Nagato breathed heavily through his nose, his jaw tightly clenched as the sharp, biting ache slowly began to recede into a dull throb. He didn’t open his newly implanted eyes just yet, his brow deeply furrowed in confusion. He had expected discomfort, but the sudden, localized spike of agony had felt entirely unnatural, as if it had been injected with malicious intent.

”The reason why it stings like hell,” Alaric explained smoothly, waving a dismissive hand as he leaned back against the stone window frame, ”is simply the accumulated weight of your sins resisting the cure. It’s the universe punishing you just a tiny bit for all the indiscriminate flattening of villages you did.”

”...”

Nagato remained utterly silent. His brilliant, tactical mind momentarily stalled, struggling to process the sheer, pseudo-philosophical absurdity of the statement. Medical ninjutsu did not operate on the principles of karmic retribution. Nerves did not sting because of moral failings. He knew, with absolute, unshakeable certainty, that the towering blonde had intentionally caused the pain just to mess with him.

Yet, considering the fact that Alaric was currently bestowing upon him a literal miracle... handing him a fresh pair of the most coveted eyes in existence, curing his crippled body, and sparing his life... Nagato wisely chose to swallow his pride. He bit his tongue, deciding that a momentary spike of manufactured agony was an incredibly cheap toll to pay for salvation.

”Now,” Alaric commanded, his voice softening into a steady, expectant hum. ”Open them.”

Nagato took a slow, deep breath, centering his turbulent chakra, and slowly fluttered his eyelids open.

For the first time in days, the suffocating, impenetrable curtain of darkness fractured, giving way to an absolute, staggering clarity.

Nagato blinked, the world rushing into his visual cortex with a crispness that defied memory. He looked down at his own hands, seeing the faint, healthy flush of blood beneath his skin. He looked across the shadowy expanse of the tower chamber, effortlessly piercing the gloom to see the intricate grain of the wooden floorboards and the microscopic dust motes floating in the moonlight.

But the true revelation was not merely physical sight; it was the perception of the world’s esoteric architecture.

The air itself seemed to vibrate with currents of energy. He could see the faint, lingering traces of Jiraiya’s potent, toad-like chakra seeping up from the lower floors, and he could see the overwhelming, bottomless ocean of golden energy radiating passively from the man leaning against the window. The legendary abilities of the Six Paths... the gravitational manipulation, the soul extraction, the summoning... flooded back into his consciousness, resting eagerly at his fingertips, waiting to be unleashed.

However, as Nagato analyzed the flow of power, a profound, world-shattering anomaly struck him.

His breath hitched, his violet, ripple-patterned eyes widening in sheer disbelief as he turned his gaze inward, assessing his own chakra coils.

When he had possessed Madara Uchiha’s transplanted Rinnegan, the eyes had been a parasitic curse. They had demanded a constant, monstrous toll of chakra simply to remain active, slowly devouring his immense Uzumaki vitality over the decades and reducing his body to a withered, emaciated husk.

But these eyes...

They demanded almost nothing.

The chakra consumption required to maintain the Rinnegan’s active state was exceptionally, impossibly minimal. They rested within his sockets not as foreign, transplanted artifacts violently rejecting their host, but with the seamless, perfectly optimized efficiency of natural biology. The pathways felt flawlessly synchronized. It felt exactly as if he had been born with these eyes, as if his own DNA had naturally cultivated the divine mutation.

Nagato slowly lifted his head, locking his newly forged Rinnegan onto Alaric’s electric-blue gaze.

His face was a canvas of profound, overwhelming questions. How did you acquire these? Why do they not drain my life force? Are these truly natural, or are they a product of your incomprehensible Fuinjutsu?

The questions burned the tip of his tongue, demanding to be voiced. But as he looked at the casual, arrogant smirk resting on his savior’s face, Nagato forcefully swallowed the interrogation. He was a man who had just been pulled back from the absolute brink of the abyss. He did not want to seem ungrateful, nor did he want to risk angering the entity that could clearly give and take the power of gods on a whim.

He offered a slow, deeply respectful dip of his head, allowing the silence to convey his profound gratitude.

Seeing the quiet, stoic acceptance from the former leader of the Akatsuki, Alaric let out a low, satisfied hum, nodding his head at his own immaculate handiwork.

”Perfect,” Alaric stated, pushing himself off the stone frame and walking toward the center of the room. He dusted off the lapels of his flak jacket, his expression shifting from a medical professional into the absolute authority of a grandmaster. ”With this successful integration, the terms of our contract are officially enacted.”

He stopped a few paces away from the wooden stool, crossing his arms over his chest as he looked down at the red-haired man.

”From this moment forward, Nagato,” Alaric declared, his voice echoing in the quiet chamber with binding finality. ”You and Konan have successfully become my disciples.”

”...”

Nagato froze, his newly acquired eyes blinking rapidly as the semantic weight of the word struck him.

He had fully anticipated becoming a subordinate. When Alaric had demanded twenty years of service in exchange for his life and the eyes, Nagato had assumed he would be treated as an elite mercenary, a follower bound to execute the blonde man’s dirty work from the shadows of the Rain Village. He had prepared himself to be a pawn in a much larger, global game of chess.

But a disciple?

The title carried a profound, intimate weight that was entirely alien to the cold, transactional nature of the shinobi world. It implied tutelage, protection, and a master-student bond that went far beyond mere obedience. His mind instantly flashed to his youth, to the warm, booming laughter of Jiraiya teaching him how to harness his erratic chakra to protect his friends. To be claimed as a disciple now, by a man who possessed power that made the Sannin look like children, was a paradigm shift he hadn’t prepared for.

Yet, despite the swirling confusion and the sheer absurdity of the promotion, Nagato remained perfectly silent.

He looked up at Alaric’s towering frame, taking in the unyielding, absolute confidence radiating from the man’s posture. It was abundantly clear that Alaric Jonathan Kenway was not the type of man who entertained negotiations, nor did he look like a man who knew how to take ’no’ for an answer. The favor had been granted; the debt was absolute.

Nagato merely offered another slow, solemn nod of his head, accepting his new reality without a single word of protest.

Satisfied that the hierarchy had been firmly established, the heavy, god-like aura surrounding Alaric vanished entirely, replaced instantly by the casual, complaining demeanor of a bored traveler.

Alaric let out a loud, dramatic sigh, rubbing his flat stomach with an exaggerated grimace.

”Man, playing god and rewiring optic nerves takes a ridiculous toll on the metabolism,” Alaric complained, his blue eyes sweeping over the austere, gloom-drenched architecture of the tower room. He turned his gaze back to his newly minted disciple, a charming, expectant grin spreading across his face.

”So, is there any actual, edible food around this depressing castle?” Alaric asked, casually waving a hand toward the door. ”Treat this new master of yours to a lavish, home-cooked meal, will you?”

Nagato stared at him. The sheer, jarring whiplash from existential philosophy and divine surgery to a casual demand for dinner left the former god momentarily stunned.

Slowly, an incredibly dry, bewildered expression settled over Nagato’s face. He raised a single, pale brow, trying to reconcile the image of an all-powerful anomaly demanding hospitality.

”Okay...” Nagato murmured, his voice laced with a deadpan, cautious resignation as he slowly stood up from the wooden stool. He brushed the imaginary dust from his dark kimono. ”...Konan knows how to cook... at least.”
