Chapter 398: Chapter 397: Coffee, Clouds, and Crowded Inns

Kusagakure - Land of Grass - Elemental Nations

Alaric opened his eyes to the thin, pale sunlight filtering through the curtains of his rented room in Kusagakure, stretching his long limbs not out of physical necessity, but out of a quiet, deliberate indulgence.

Sleep, for a man whose cells constantly regenerated at a godly pace and whose stamina rivaled the oceans, was no longer a strict biological requirement. Yet, he still chose to surrender to it occasionally, finding a profound, anchoring value in the simple, human ritual of letting his mind drift into the soft, unburdened quiet. He yawned, sitting up on the modest bedding before swinging his legs over the wooden floorboards, his polished boots resting neatly by the sliding door. Pulling on his black Vanguard uniform, the dark, tactical fabric settling impeccably across his broad shoulders, he looked entirely composed and sharp... a stark contrast to an army that was currently wrestling with the agonizing aftermath of war and excessive alcohol.

Stepping out into the hallway, the active reality of the morning immediately washed over him.

The corridor was a crowded, moving tapestry of exhaustion and slow recovery, with Konoha shinobi occupying almost every available inch of space. A medic hurried past carrying a stack of neatly folded bandages, murmuring quiet apologies as she squeezed between two chunin who were softly discussing travel schedules, while a seasoned jonin stood by a frosted window, nursing a cup of tea in deep, contemplative silence. Further down the hall, a tired infantryman sat flat on the floor with his head resting heavily against the wall, rubbing his temples as his comrades politely stepped over his outstretched legs.

Because Konoha and Kusagakure were operating under friendly, cooperative terms, the massive influx of Leaf forces had been officially welcomed, but even sanctioned hospitality possessed its limits. The sudden, overwhelming flood of a foreign military force had strained local inns, winding roads, and limited food supplies to their absolute breaking point, weaving a subtle, unvoiced tension into the crisp morning air.

Descending the wooden stairs into the expansive common room, Alaric was met with a chorus of subdued, respectful nods from the occupying Leaf shinobi. There were no uproarious cheers or grand salutes; it was morning, everyone was indoors, and the sanctity of breakfast after a brutal war was universally respected.

Alaric navigated the packed tables... where some shinobi ate heartily while others stared blankly into their bowls, still exceptionally pale from the previous night’s legendary indulgence... and took an empty stool at the main counter. The innkeeper, a polite but visibly overwhelmed man whose apron was already dusted with flour, hurried over with a weary, professional smile, asking what he could prepare.

”Coffee,” Alaric said, his voice carrying the grave, unyielding seriousness of a man requesting life-saving medicine rather than a simple morning beverage.

”That will be three ryō, sir,” the innkeeper nodded, immediately turning back to his steaming pots.

Alaric unsealed a few coins from the storage matrix on his shoulder, sliding the exact payment across the polished wood, before reaching into his dark uniform to retrieve a premium cigar. He drew it out smoothly, snipping the tip with a clean, practiced motion, and placed it between his lips. Without reaching for a match, he lifted his index finger, commanding a tiny, perfectly condensed flame to bloom at his fingertip, and lit the tobacco with absolute, effortless precision. The innkeeper caught the casual display of elemental mastery out of the corner of his eye, blinked once in mild shock, and prudently decided that questioning the bizarre habits of elite shinobi before breakfast was entirely above his pay grade.

As Alaric took a slow, appreciative drag, letting the rich smoke mingle with the scent of roasted beans and frying eggs, a familiar, slouched figure dropped heavily onto the stool beside him.

Shikaku Nara looked deeply, profoundly tired in the specific, hollowed-out way of a man who had slept but had fundamentally failed to recover. His posture was completely loose, his dark eyes half-lidded, yet the brilliant, calculating mind behind them remained perceptibly sharp. He ordered a simple cup of matcha tea, letting out a long, heavy sigh as the innkeeper scurried away to prepare their drinks.

”I want to go home,” Shikaku muttered quietly to the countertop, stating the desire not with dramatic flair, but with the raw, unvarnished honesty of absolute exhaustion.

He missed the serene quiet of the Nara compound, the simple joy of watching clouds drift aimlessly across a blue sky, and the uncomplicated geometry of a shogi board. Above all, he desperately missed a day where no one required him to predict the catastrophic movements of rival armies, the shadow plays of the Akatsuki, the whereabouts of Obito Uchiha, or the terrifyingly imminent return of ghosts from history.

Alaric took a moment to look around the crowded common room, observing Tsunade speaking quietly with several jonin commanders near the hearth, before turning back to the strategist with a faint, amused smile.

”I understand completely,” Alaric replied smoothly, tapping the ash from his cigar. ”I am also becoming incredibly sick of seeing your face.”

Shikaku’s brow twitched in mild annoyance, a dry scoff escaping his lips.

”Troublesome,” Shikaku drawled, leaning his cheek against his palm. ”I was about to say the exact same thing about your pale face.”

Alaric chuckled, a low, rumbling sound that was soon interrupted as the innkeeper returned, placing the steaming mug of dark coffee and the vibrant green matcha on the counter before them. They drank in companionable silence for a short while, letting the peace of the morning breathe. The background symphony of the inn... clinking cups, shuffling boots, low, tired laughter, and the innkeeper working the stoves... washed over them, a rare, fragile pause of humanity salvaged from the wreckage of war.

Lowering his coffee mug, Alaric turned his head slightly and, entirely devoid of any conversational buildup, asked a question that had been idly bouncing around his mind.

”So, Shikaku. Just out of morbid curiosity... how high is your IQ?”

Shikaku raised a single, profoundly unamused brow, giving the blonde anomaly a long, incredibly tired look that explicitly communicated how far too early in the morning it was for such invasive metrics. He took a slow sip of his matcha, swallowing before he finally surrendered with a heavy sigh.

”The last time it was formally measured, it was somewhere around two hundred and forty-five,” Shikaku answered dryly, tracing the rim of his cup. ”But that was before Shikamaru was born, and raising that boy has undoubtedly killed at least a few million of my brain cells.”

Alaric let out a low, genuinely impressed whistle. ”Are the Nara just naturally ’there’ intellectually?” he asked, taking another drag from his cigar. ”Do your children just exit the womb actively calculating tax codes, optimal battle formations, and the most efficient escape routes from social obligations?”

Shikaku shook his head, a wry, cynical smirk touching his lips. ”Being a Nara is incredibly useful, yes, but it is also a miserable, unrelenting curse,” the strategist explained, staring into his tea. ”People inherently assume that high intelligence equates to absolute omniscience. Because I can map a battlefield, they automatically assume I know every single subject under the sun. They come to me asking about complex medicine, obscure sealing theories, convoluted clan law, seasonal agriculture, rare bloodline mutations, untraceable poisons, and their own, highly convoluted personal relationship problems.”

He took another sip, his tone deadpan. ”They completely forget that pattern recognition is not the same thing as specialized medical training, and that tactical strategy does not equal divine omniscience.”

He paused, a dark, fond memory surfacing from his younger days.

”When I was just a newly promoted chunin, some arrogant official cornered me in the street, aggressively demanding answers about complex medical ninjutsu, sneering, ’You’re a Nara, don’t you people know everything?’”

Alaric grinned around his cigar. ”And what did you say?”

”I was already running on two hours of sleep that day,” Shikaku replied, his voice as flat as a stone skipping across a pond. ”So I looked him dead in the eye and told him to fuck off.”

Alaric burst out laughing, the rich sound vibrating into his coffee mug. ”Does Shikamaru suffer from the same inherited curse?”

”Shikamaru is actually worse in one specific regard,” Shikaku noted, a fatherly, exasperated pride in his voice. ”He is smart enough to know exactly how much physical and mental effort his intelligence is going to cost him in the long run. Consequently, he aggressively avoids using it unless he is absolutely, violently forced to do so.”

”That sounds like genuine wisdom,” Alaric commended lightly.

”It sounds like laziness backed by incredibly good branding,” Shikaku corrected, shaking his head.

Alaric smiled, looking thoughtfully at the dark liquid in his cup. ”In my own, rather extensive experience,” Alaric offered, ”intelligence mostly just means that people come to you after they have completely, irreparably broken something, and they expect you to magically fix it without ever actually admitting that they were the ones who broke it in the first place.”

Shikaku let out a short, authentic laugh, raising his teacup slightly in a quiet toast. ”That might be the most profoundly Nara thing you have ever said, Alaric.”

The light, comfortable banter faded after a few moments, gracefully replaced by a quiet, far heavier undercurrent that mirrored the lingering shadows of their reality. Shikaku lowered his cup, his dark eyes shifting to observe the anomaly beside him with the calculating gaze of a chief strategist.

”Did you actually sleep last night?” Shikaku asked softly.

”Yes,” Alaric replied, taking a slow puff of his cigar.

”Because you needed it?” Shikaku pressed, fully aware that the man’s biology actively rejected fatigue.

”Because I wanted to,” Alaric answered smoothly, his blue eyes calm and unbothered.

Shikaku absorbed the distinction, a silent reminder that the man sitting next to him operated on a plane entirely detached from human frailty. ”Are you still thinking about Obito Uchiha?” the Nara asked, his voice barely a murmur beneath the din of the common room.

”Yes,” Alaric confirmed, the relaxed line of his shoulders tightening just a fraction. ”Obito having the Rinnegan means the silence is no longer comforting. It only means the next move is happening somewhere we cannot see.”

Shikaku stared at his empty teacup, a deep, nostalgic sorrow crossing his scarred face. ”I miss when my biggest problem was predicting Iwa supply lines,” he confessed softly.

Alaric glanced at him, a faint, knowing smirk on his lips. ”No, you do not.”

Shikaku sighed, a heavy, relenting sound. ”No. But it was a more honest kind of troublesome.”

Before the philosophical weight of the conversation could settle any deeper, the front doors of the inn were shoved open with a loud, aggressive bang that violently severed the low murmur of the common room.

Four Kusagakure shinobi stepped into the establishment: a single, visibly irritated jonin leading a squad of three much younger, hesitant genin. The jonin was not inherently evil, nor was he cartoonishly stupid, but he was drowning in a profound, territorial frustration that completely eclipsed his diplomatic restraint.

He marched directly toward the counter, his posture radiating an arrogant annoyance born of profound inconvenience. The three genin trailing behind him looked deeply uncomfortable, exchanging embarrassed glances that clearly suggested they had already endured this exact, humiliating routine at several other establishments this morning.

One of the genin, a pale boy with nervous eyes, stepped up and whispered frantically to his sensei, desperately trying to convince the older man to just leave and find somewhere else, but the jonin completely ignored him.

Leaning heavily against the counter, the Kusa jonin demanded rooms for his team. The innkeeper, maintaining a polite but visibly exhausted professional smile, bowed his head deeply and apologized, explaining that the inn was fully rented out for the entirety of the day.

The jonin’s jaw tightened visibly, a muscle ticking in his cheek. He demanded to know if there was truly not a single cot available. The innkeeper, rubbing his flour-dusted hands on his apron, gently reiterated that Konoha’s forces had arrived yesterday under a fully sanctioned, official arrangement, and that every single room had been meticulously assigned and paid for. He quickly added that many other inns throughout the village were also entirely full.

The Kusa jonin turned his head, his frustrated gaze sweeping across the crowded common room, finally taking in the sheer, overwhelming volume of Leaf forehead protectors gleaming in the morning light. His frustration sharpened into a volatile, vocal resentment.

”I have already passed three other inns,” the jonin complained loudly, his voice carrying an abrasive edge that demanded an audience, ”and all of them were filled with Konoha shinobi. Now this one too.” He scowled, his pride demanding a target. ”What makes Leaf shinobi so special that our own inns are full before Kusagakure shinobi can even get a room?”

The common room quieted instantly. It wasn’t an eruption of immediate hostility, but a sudden, hyper-aware stillness. Konoha shinobi paused, chopsticks hovering over their rice bowls, their eyes turning toward the disruptive local. Across the room, Tsunade’s senior commanders bristled, though the Hokage herself merely watched from her table, sipping her coffee, choosing not to immediately intervene in a squabble that had not yet escalated to a diplomatic crisis. The Kusa genin looked absolutely mortified, one burying his face in his hands.

Before the tense silence could snap into open confrontation, Alaric spoke from his stool at the counter, not even bothering to turn around.

”If you are looking for a room,” Alaric drawled, his voice dry and echoing clearly through the hushed inn, ”shouting at the man who assigns them seems strategically unsound.”

The entire common room stilled even further, a collective breath held in anticipation.

The Kusa jonin whipped his head toward the counter, his angry eyes landing on the broad back of the man in the black Vanguard uniform. He took in the pale, sharp profile visible from the side, the relaxed, utterly unbothered posture, the steaming coffee, and the thick cigar smoke. He didn’t immediately recognize the face, lacking the context of the recent border rumors, and his bruised ego refused to be lectured by a stranger.

”And who are you supposed to be?” the jonin demanded, stepping closer.

Alaric finally turned his head slightly, a thick plume of cigar smoke curling lazily from his lips as he met the man’s furious glare.

”A man enjoying coffee,” Alaric answered smoothly.

The Kusa jonin’s face flushed dark with perceived disrespect. ”I was not speaking to you,” he snapped.

”That was the problem,” Alaric replied effortlessly, a faint, dangerous amusement dancing in his blue eyes. ”You were speaking to everyone.”

Shikaku, recognizing the volatile trajectory of the exchange, attempted to calmly de-escalate the situation before Alaric’s unique brand of diplomacy permanently ruined their host village’s goodwill.

”We understand your inconvenience, friend,” Shikaku offered, his tone perfectly measured and exceptionally polite. ”However, Konoha’s lodging was arranged through proper channels. We will not remain longer than necessary, and no one intends to burden your village beyond the agreed arrangement.”

The Kusa jonin did not appreciate the calm, rational answer; to his bruised pride, it felt incredibly condescending. He scoffed, crossing his arms defensively. ”Konoha always acts like it owns the roads,” he muttered bitterly.

”I apologize if that’s how you look at it, but that’s not the case,” Alaric took a slow sip of his coffee, placing the mug down with a soft click before cutting in lightly. ”We rented rooms, not sovereignty.”

The line was sharp, profoundly funny, and aggressively irritating. The Kusa jonin’s face tightened with genuine anger, feeling hopelessly outmatched in wit but unwilling to retreat in front of his students. He crossed the line, letting his wounded territorial pride bleed into a politically charged, unfair accusation.

”Generous,” the jonin sneered, his voice raising to ensure the entire room heard him. ”The Leaf starts a war near our borders, fills our village, then offers us scraps of our own inns.”

The temperature in the common room plummeted. Konoha shinobi bristled visibly, hands twitching toward weapon pouches, deeply offended by the blatant historical inaccuracy; Iwagakure had aggressively provoked the war, not Konoha. But from a local perspective, the terrifying presence of great powers clashing nearby had still resulted in a massive, unwelcome disruption.

Tsunade’s amber eyes narrowed dangerously from her table, her patience rapidly evaporating.

Alaric, however, merely smiled a faint, chilling smile that felt infinitely worse than any display of roaring anger.

”Careful,” Alaric warned, his voice dropping into a soft, velvety register that carried the absolute, suffocating weight of an apex predator. ”You are confusing proximity with responsibility. You’re a Jonin, you should know that.”

The Kusa jonin swallowed hard, suddenly feeling a terrifying, instinctual chill run down his spine, but his pride forced him to push back. ”Is that a threat?” he demanded, his hand hovering near his hip.

”No,” Alaric replied calmly, taking a long drag from his cigar. ”It is grammar. I don’t do threats.”

The entire common room struggled violently not to react, a few scattered coughs masking suppressed laughter. The three Kusagakure genin were visibly mortified, practically shrinking into the floorboards. ”Sensei, please...” one of them whispered desperately, tugging at the man’s sleeve, acutely aware that their leader was dramatically overstepping.

Alaric did not rise from his stool to physically threaten the man, nor did he unleash a wave of killing intent to crush the jonin into submission. Instead, he solved the practical problem in a manner that was obscenely generous, profoundly humiliating, and inherently, wonderfully Alaric.

He turned back to the counter, addressing the polite, bewildered host. ”Innkeeper,” Alaric asked smoothly, ”how many rooms does this Kusagakure team need?”

The Kusa jonin bristled, his face flushing crimson. ”I don’t need charity from a Leaf shinobi!” he snapped defensively.

”Good,” Alaric nodded, completely ignoring the outrage. ”This is not charity. It is noise reduction.”

With a swift, casual motion, Alaric unsealed a heavy, leather pouch of Ryo from his shoulder matrix and placed it firmly on the wooden counter. The sheer weight of the coin made the wood thud satisfyingly.

”Compensate any Konoha shinobi willing to share rooms, move to a different inn, or free a room entirely if possible,” Alaric instructed the innkeeper, his tone entirely businesslike. ”Pay them properly. Double the rate if necessary. And prepare rooms for the Kusagakure team.”

It was an absurd display of wealth, entirely disproportionate to the actual cost of a few beds, dropping enough liquid capital onto the counter to make Shikaku internally weep with worry over economic overkill. The innkeeper was utterly stunned, his jaw hanging slightly slack, but his professional instincts forced him into a deep, frantic bow of gratitude.

The Kusa jonin, however, was paralyzed by the profound, surgical humiliation. His practical, logistical problem had been instantly solved, yet his pride had been completely and utterly decimated.

Alaric looked at the frozen, humiliated man, his blue eyes holding a lazy, victorious glint. ”There,” Alaric announced, gesturing grandly with his cigar. ”Your village has rooms, the innkeeper has money, my coffee remains warm, and no one had to embarrass themselves further.”

He took a slow, deliberate sip from his mug, letting the silence stretch for a perfectly timed comedic beat before adding softly.

”Well. Further than this.”

A few Konoha shinobi across the room finally broke, masking their laughter behind loud, forced coughing fits, while the three Kusa genin looked as though they passionately wished the floorboards would simply open up and swallow them whole.

Shikaku pinched the bridge of his nose, letting out a long, exhausted sigh; it was exactly the kind of uniquely Alaric solution that technically violated no laws, yet still somehow generated an administrative headache. From her table across the room, Tsunade watched the display, muttering a very audible, incredibly tired, ”There he goes again.”

But the profound reality of the situation was just beginning to dawn on the Kusagakure jonin.

As his anger faltered, stripped of its righteous foundation, his eyes swept over the man sitting at the counter. He took in the stark black Vanguard uniform, devoid of standard village markings, the preternaturally pale, sharp features, the impossibly calm posture, the glowing cigar, and, most damningly, the absolute, unwavering lack of fear radiating from every single Konoha veteran in the room.

Then, the whispers he had heard echoing through the border towns hit him like a physical blow. The rumors of a towering, blonde anomaly who had been present at the bitter end of the Iwa war. The man who had supposedly intercepted the Third Tsuchikage in the highest reaches of the sky and single-handedly stopped ōnoki from pushing the war further.

The Kusa jonin’s face drained of all color as the terrifying realization calcified in his mind. He wasn’t arguing with a random, wealthy Leaf operative; he had been actively screaming at a walking natural disaster.

Alaric noticed the dramatic, horrified shift in the man’s complexion. A dry, highly amused smirk touched his lips.

”Gossip really travels fast,” Alaric commented, stating it with the mild, put-upon annoyance of a man who found his own mythic reputation more of a tedious inconvenience than a compliment.

The Kusa jonin stiffened violently, desperately attempting to recover a microscopic shred of his dignity by standing perfectly rigid, but the damage was irreversible. Alaric didn’t offer a final, crushing threat; he simply turned his back on the terrified man, returning his full attention to his dark coffee, rendering the humiliation absolute.

Shikaku took a slow sip of his matcha tea, casting a sideways glance at the blonde anomaly. ”You enjoy this too much,” the Nara observed quietly.

”I have very few hobbies left,” Alaric replied effortlessly, a faint smile playing on his lips.

As the humiliated Kusa team silently shuffled away toward a corner booth to wait for their newly purchased rooms, the tension in the common area finally dissipated into a comfortable, amused hum. Tsunade rose from her table, dismissing her commanders with a brief nod, and walked over to the counter. She stood between Alaric and Shikaku, crossing her arms as she leveled a deeply tired, intimately familiar look at the blonde billionaire. She wasn’t truly angry, just profoundly exhausted by his unique brand of problem-solving.

”You could have let me handle that,” Tsunade pointed out, her voice carrying a dry reprimand.

”I can’t help it,” Alaric took a leisurely sip of his coffee, not bothering to look up. ”You looked busy.”

”I was standing right there,” Tsunade countered flatly, narrowing her amber eyes.

Alaric lowered his mug, offering a completely unapologetic smirk. ”Exactly. Busy.”

Shikaku muttered something incomprehensible under his breath about desperately returning to his tea before politics actively hunted him down again, resting his head on his hand.

Tsunade rolled her eyes toward the ceiling, but her expression quickly sobered, the mantle of the Hokage reasserting itself. She acknowledged that the Kusa jonin had been incredibly rude and aggressively out of line, but her political acumen recognized the deeply rooted validity of the underlying issue.

”His frustration is real, Alaric,” Tsunade said quietly, her voice dropping so only they could hear. ”Our presence has severely strained Kusagakure’s local lodging and food supplies. We need to depart on schedule and ensure we don’t leave a toxic trail of resentment behind us. We may be officially allied and friendly for now, but local goodwill thins incredibly fast when ordinary people feel completely pushed aside and suffocated by great-power wars.”

Alaric nodded his head slowly, fully agreeing with the pragmatic, mature assessment. He wasn’t blind to the suffering of civilians caught in the crossfire of titans.

”Resentment does not need a battlefield,” Alaric murmured, his blue eyes staring thoughtfully into his dark coffee. ”Sometimes it only needs a full inn and bad timing.”

The profound, heavy truth of the statement hung between them, connecting the petty squabble of the morning to the vast, terrifying geopolitical landscape they were currently navigating.

Shikaku lowered his teacup, his dark eyes meeting Alaric’s with a grim, knowing clarity. ”This is just a reminder,” Shikaku noted quietly, ”that even friendly villages resent the footprint of the great powers.”

”Indeed,” Alaric agreed softly, taking a final drag from his cigar. The Five Great Nations were hurtling toward an inevitable, apocalyptic crossroads where absolute unity would be required to survive, but achieving that unity would be a monumental nightmare. Old, bleeding grudges, fierce local resentments, financial disparities, bruised pride, and overwhelming fear would all act as jagged barricades on the path to an alliance.

”If a few rented rooms can bruise pride this quickly,” Alaric said, exhaling a thin cloud of smoke, ”imagine asking five Kages to trust one another with the end of the world.”

Shikaku let out a long, deeply exhausted sigh that seemed to carry the weight of a thousand future war councils. ”Troublesome.”

Alaric offered a faint, acknowledging smile. ”Profoundly.”

The heavy, existential gravity of their conversation slowly faded as the morning wore on, yielding to the warm, comforting normalcy of the establishment. The Kusagakure genin sat awkwardly in a far corner booth, speaking in hushed, embarrassed whispers as they waited for their newly acquired rooms, while their jonin remained uncharacteristically quiet, his arrogant posture thoroughly deflated by his own realization.

The Konoha shinobi returned to their hearty breakfasts, the clatter of chopsticks and bowls resuming its chaotic rhythm, though a few younger chunin were still visibly struggling to suppress their lingering laughter over the incredibly expensive, ruthless shutdown they had just witnessed.

The polite innkeeper darted back and forth behind the counter, looking visibly relieved and revitalized by the sudden influx of staggering wealth. Tsunade eventually stepped away from the counter, returning to her commanders to finalize the marching orders for the journey home, while Shikaku closed his eyes, savoring the bitter, grounding warmth of his matcha tea. Alaric remained on his stool, finally granted the peaceful luxury of enjoying his dark coffee and his premium cigar undisturbed.

The common room slowly returned to the sound of bowls, cups, and tired conversation, but beneath the warmth of breakfast and the smell of coffee, Alaric could feel the shape of the harder war waiting beyond them... not the war of blades and jutsu, but the war of making proud villages stand together before the world gave them no other choice.

’...I also want to go home...’
