Chapter 392: Chapter 391: The Fall of the Ramparts and the Frost’s Greeting

Iwagakure War Camp - Land of Grass

The traditional arithmetic of shinobi warfare dictated a specific, almost gentlemanly rhythm to the opening of a campaign. Armies would settle into their respective borders, dispatching small, highly mobile scouting units to test perimeters, map supply lines, and engage in brief, bloody skirmishes that served as the grim overture to full-scale slaughter. Iwagakure had prepared for this exact, methodical dance, fortifying their earthen ramparts while waiting for the preliminary clash of vanguards.

But Konohagakure did not dance; they struck with the sudden, catastrophic velocity of a collapsing dam.

The evening sky over the Land of Grass, previously bruised by the setting sun, was abruptly, violently illuminated by a torrential, overlapping barrage of the five elemental natures.

”Brace the eastern flank! Keep the mud flowing, damn it!” an Iwagakure Jonin roared, his voice cracking painfully as he threw his entire body weight against the vibrating surface of a massive stone barricade. The earth beneath his boots trembled as a synchronized volley of Leaf explosive tags detonated against the outer wall. ”Do not bunch up, you idiots! You’re painting a target for their Fire Release! Spread out!”

It was absolute, suffocating chaos.

A howling tempest of concentrated Wind Release sheared through the heavy canopy surrounding the camp, carrying with it a blinding, searing wave of Fire Release. The roaring inferno crashed into the hastily erected Earth-Style walls, the extreme thermal shock superheating the rock until it fractured and exploded inward like a barrage of crude shrapnel. Iwa-nin screamed as burning fragments of their own defenses tore through their armor and flesh.

Konoha’s assault was a terrifying testament to a flawless intelligence network. Guided by the omniscient, telepathic directives of Inoichi Yamanaka and the peerless tactical mapping of Shikaku Nara, the Leaf shinobi did not waste a single jutsu. They knew precisely where the Iwa traps were buried, bypassing explosive tripwires with insulting ease. They identified the structural weak points of the stone barricades instantly, concentrating their lightning and wind attacks to dismantle the defenses before the Stone ninjas could even mold the chakra to repair them.

”They’re too fast!” a terrified Iwa chunin shrieked, desperately weaving hand seals to raise a mud wall, only to have a Konoha operative drop seamlessly from the smoke above, a kunai severing his vocal cords before the jutsu could manifest.

Hovering just a few feet above the churning, bloody nightmare of the camp, Ōnoki of Both Scales watched his pride and his people being systematically butchered.

The Third Tsuchikage’s knuckles were stark white, his aged hands trembling with a profound, incinerating fury. He darted through the air, intervening only when absolutely necessary, flicking microscopic, perfectly calibrated pulses of earth chakra to deflect lethal kunai or raise sudden, localized pillars of stone to shield his most vulnerable, wounded men. But he refused to unleash his true arsenal. He could not afford to burn his reserves on the foot soldiers of the Leaf. He was fiercely conserving his energy, his tactical mind rigidly fixed on the inevitable, apocalyptic clash with the true monsters Konoha harbored in the shadows... the Ice Demon, and potentially the blonde anomaly himself.

But as he watched the pristine, coordinated slaughter unfold, a bitter, corrosive regret began to gnaw at the edges of his hardened soul.

He cursed himself, his teeth grinding audibly. ’I should have used the Particle Style the absolute second they breached the tree line,’ Ōnoki berated his own tactical restraint, his dark eyes tracking the collapse of the northern barricade. ’I should have turned their entire advancing vanguard into molecular dust when they were still a mile away. But who could have predicted this? No army abandons the skirmish phase to launch a total, overwhelming frontal assault without testing the waters!’

It was a bitter pill to swallow. Konoha’s scouting and information gathering were so unimaginably superb that they didn’t need to test the waters; they already knew exactly how deep the ocean was. And now, it was entirely too late to regret his caution. The battle lines had completely merged, rendering his wide-area Dust Release useless, as deploying it now would annihilate his own men alongside the enemy.

CRACK-BOOOOM!

The defining, sickening sound of the primary earth wall shattering completely snapped Ōnoki out of his bitter reverie.

The massive, thirty-foot barricade protecting the center of the camp crumbled into a landslide of dust and broken stone. Through the gaping breach poured a flood of Konoha shinobi, their blades gleaming in the firelight as they descended upon the disorganized, exhausted Iwa defenders like wolves among a scattered flock.

Ōnoki’s eyes narrowed into dangerous, lethal slits.

Directly below the breach, a squad of severely wounded Iwa-nin, attempting to drag their bleeding comrades to the triage tents, looked up in sheer horror. A Konoha Jonin, his sword drawn and crackling with lethal, blue-white lightning chakra, was dropping directly toward them from the ruined wall, fully intending to execute the helpless group in a single, sweeping strike.

”You arrogant brats!” Ōnoki roared, his voice cutting through the din of the battlefield with the absolute authority of a Kage.

He did not hesitate. His wrinkled, age-spotted hands blurred through a complex, heavy sequence of seals in a fraction of a second, tapping into his vast, ancient reserves.

”Earth Release: Earth Dragon Bullet!”

It was not a standard, textbook execution of the jutsu. Fueled by the sheer, unadulterated rage of the Tsuchikage, the technique was catastrophically magnified. From the churned, blood-soaked mud of the camp, a titanic, roaring beast of solid rock and jagged fangs erupted upward. The earth dragon was massive, a runaway freight train of compressed stone that shrieked through the air, hurtling directly toward the descending Konoha Jonin with enough kinetic force to pulverize him into a fine, bloody mist.

The Leaf shinobi widened his eyes, realizing mid-air that he had absolutely no avenue of escape. Death was a microsecond away.

Then, the ambient temperature of the battlefield violently plummeted.

The air directly in front of the roaring earth dragon did not merely chill; it froze, the moisture in the atmosphere snapping into solid form with a sharp, crystalline crack.

A figure blurred into existence, interposing himself flawlessly between the colossal stone beast and the falling Konoha shinobi. It was a young man with long, dark hair, clad in a teal combat kimono, moving with a velocity that entirely defied the concept of friction.

He didn’t draw a weapon. He didn’t brace his body to absorb the impact. He simply raised a single, delicate hand, his pale fingers weaving a solitary sign.

”Ice Release: Mirror Step...”

The teal figure vanished instantly, abandoning the airspace, but leaving behind a masterpiece of elemental architecture.

A pristine, angled mirror of impossibly dense, diamond-hard ice materialized exactly where he had hovered. It was not a flat wall meant to absorb trauma, but a perfectly calculated, geometric deflector shield.

The massive Earth Dragon collided with the crystalline surface.

However, instead of shattering the ice into a million glittering fragments, the sheer kinetic force and elemental mass of Ōnoki’s jutsu were flawlessly, miraculously hijacked. The mirror absorbed the roaring impact, instantly reversing the trajectory of the earth chakra along the precise angle of its surface.

Ōnoki’s eyes widened to an impossible degree, his heart seizing in his chest.

The colossal beast of stone bounced off the ice mirror, retaining every single ounce of its original, lethal velocity, and roared directly back toward the man who had cast it.

Relying entirely on a century of battlefield instincts, Ōnoki violently shifted his center of gravity. He threw his small frame sideways through the air just as his own, magnified Earth Dragon obliterated the airspace he had occupied a fraction of a second prior, continuing its destructive path to shatter against a distant cliff face in a deafening explosion of dust and rubble.

Breathing heavily, the Tsuchikage righted his posture in the air. He glared through the billowing clouds of smoke and pulverized rock, his dark eyes searching the perimeter for the architect of that impossible reflection.

The smoke slowly parted, carried away by the biting, unnatural chill that had suddenly claimed the war camp.

Standing in the distance, perched lightly atop the jagged, broken remnants of the primary earth wall, was the young man. The violent, chaotic winds of the battlefield whipped his long, dark hair and the folds of his teal kimono around him, yet he remained a picture of terrifying, absolute serenity. His dark brown eyes were entirely devoid of warmth, fixed upon the hovering Kage with a cold, unyielding resolve that felt heavier than the stone surrounding them.

Ōnoki recognized the description instantly. The age, the attire, the frictionless movement, and the sheer, casual mastery over a suppressed bloodline.

”So you’ve finally arrived, huh?” Ōnoki ground out, his voice dripping with a mixture of bitter hatred and undeniable, veteran respect as he glared at the youth who had slaughtered his northern flank. ”The Ice Demon of Konoha.”

Haku did not sneer, nor did he draw his blade in an aggressive display of bravado. Despite standing in the epicenter of a massacre, he maintained his flawless, immaculate composure. He inclined his head in a slow, polite, and deeply respectful bow.

”It is a profound honor to meet you, Sandaime Tsuchikage-sama,” Haku greeted, his melodic voice carrying smoothly and clearly over the shrieks of dying men and exploding tags.

The sheer, pristine politeness of the greeting felt like a physical insult to the carnage surrounding them. Ōnoki’s jaw tightened so fiercely a muscle jumped in his weathered cheek.

”Save the pleasantries, kid,” Ōnoki spat, his hands balling into fists as his chakra flared, a visible, suffocating aura of power pressing down upon the shattered camp. ”We are in a war against each other. There is no honor here today... only survival.”

Haku slowly straightened his posture, his polite smile fading into an expression of serene, absolute finality. He raised a single, delicate brow, absorbing the Kage’s raw hostility before giving a slow, acknowledging nod of his head.

Without breaking eye contact, Haku raised his right hand, bringing his fingers together in a single, solitary seal.

”Ice Rain.”
