Chapter 383: Chapter 382: The Architect’s Fleet and the Silent Guardian

[Balance Remaining: $646,286,326.31]

Kenway Private Harbor - Philadelphia - Pennsylvania - Holy Commonwealth of Pennmere

The Kenway Private Harbor was a sprawling, meticulously orchestrated monument to maritime supremacy. Situated on a highly fortified stretch of the Delaware River, the docks were a hive of relentless, disciplined activity, entirely removed from the chaotic, shouting crowds of Philadelphia’s public ports.

Here, the air smelled sharply of brine, tar, and the rich, minty aroma of Celestial Tea seeping from the massive, climate-controlled warehouses that lined the waterfront. Dozens of Vanguard operatives moved through the complex with the silent, terrifying efficiency of a shadow army. Some were stationed along the high stone perimeters, their keen eyes sweeping the horizon for naval threats, while others actively managed the logistics of the empire, loading heavy crates of heavily guarded Celestial products onto awaiting galleons. The family preferred to operate this way, routinely visiting the private docks to personally unseal and inventory the required tonnage of goods directly from their spatial rings into the physical warehouses.

Stepping out from the shadowed archway of the main administrative building, Alaric Jonathan Kenway let his passive sensory network bleed outward across the docks.

He immediately filtered out the hundreds of disciplined, ashura-enhanced heartbeats belonging to his soldiers, his focus narrowing until he pinpointed the two distinct, deeply familiar chakra signatures anchoring the far end of the harbor. A warm, uncharacteristically soft smile broke through his stoic facade.

’Only the two of them today,’ Alaric mused, adjusting the collar of his regal black-and-gold coat as he began a leisurely stroll down the wooden pier.

He navigated the busy docks, slipping effortlessly past the towering stacks of cargo until he reached the wide, open doors of Warehouse Number Four. Inside, bathed in the dusty, golden light filtering through the high skylights, Leonard and Eleanor Kenway stood over a long wooden table. They were entirely engrossed in the meticulous, exhausting arithmetic of high-level commerce, their fingers flying across heavy ledgers as they cross-referenced the freshly unsealed crates of Kunoichi Beauty Masks with the outbound shipping manifests to ensure not a single jar was miscounted.

Several Vanguard operatives were stationed deep within the warehouse, acting as heavy lifters and armed escorts. The moment Alaric crossed the threshold, the ambient noise of moving timber abruptly ceased.

Every single operative within eyesight stopped their duties, snapping perfectly to attention. With a synchronized, heavy thud of leather against armor, they brought their right fists across their chests, delivering the Vanguard salute with absolute, unwavering reverence.

The sudden, percussive sound broke Leonard and Eleanor from their intense concentration. They both raised a confused brow, lifting their heads from the ledgers to follow the collective gaze of the shadow soldiers. The confusion instantly melted into brilliant, unrestrained joy as they spotted the towering, platinum-blonde figure standing in the doorway.

”Son!” Leonard called out, his booming, hearty voice echoing off the high wooden rafters as he tossed his quill onto the desk.

”’Laric!” Eleanor beamed, her eyes crinkling with profound maternal warmth.

Alaric smiled broadly, crossing the remaining distance in a few long strides. He wrapped his arms around his mother, burying her in a tight, affectionate embrace that momentarily lifted her off her feet, before pulling back to offer his father a firm, deeply respectful nod.

”It’s good to see you both,” Alaric greeted, his blue eyes sweeping over the ledgers. ”How is the lifeblood of the empire flowing? Is the embargo causing you too much of a headache?”

Leonard let out a heavy, good-natured sigh, crossing his arms over his chest as he leaned back against the table. ”It isn’t all that bad, to be entirely honest, lad. The world is a vast place, and there are countless other foreign ports desperate to trade for our inventory.”

”I agree... though it is obviously far more taxing now that William Penn has officially severed the French and Spanish lines,” Eleanor added, picking up the conversational thread with her sharp business acumen. ”We are forcing the other empires... the Ottomans, the Qing, the Dutch... to sail significantly farther to reach our harbors. But they are making the journey regardless, and paying the premium for the distance. It all balances out in the end; we certainly aren’t bleeding money or facing bankruptcy.”

Alaric nodded his head slowly, a deep, satisfied hum vibrating in his chest as he absorbed the economic resilience of his family. He looked at them, genuinely marveling at how far the struggling dirt farmers of Swansea had climbed.

”I’ve missed both of you,” Alaric murmured, his tone dropping into a gentle, intimate register. He tilted his head slightly, his gaze dropping momentarily toward his mother’s stomach before his smile widened into something profoundly amused and deeply affectionate. ”...And it seems that I should be expecting a little brother soon.”

”...”

”...”

The warehouse plunged into an absolute, suffocating silence.

Eleanor’s hands flew to her mouth, her eyes widening to impossible, comical proportions as a furious blush exploded across her cheeks. Leonard choked on his own breath, his jaw dropping as he stared at his son in sheer, unadulterated shock. Even the disciplined Vanguard operatives standing in the periphery broke protocol, their eyes widening beneath their hoods as the unexpected revelation echoed through the cavernous space.

”H-How... how could you possibly know that!?” Eleanor stammered, entirely flustered by the casual dismantling of a secret they hadn’t even shared with the royal physicians yet. ”We didn’t tell a single soul! I barely even knew for certain myself!”

Alaric merely tapped his temple, offering a lazy, knowing wink. His Mind’s Eye of the Kagura and medical expertise allowed him to detect the microscopic, secondary heartbeat and the subtle, structural shifts in her chakra network from fifty paces away.

”I know everything, Mother,” Alaric chuckled, raising his hands in a placating gesture as he saw the profound embarrassment coloring his parents’ faces. ”Hey, it’s perfectly okay. It is a little bit weird to wrap my head around the fact that my soon-to-be little brother is going to be chronologically younger than my own son... but I am incredibly excited for the both of you. It’s a blessing.”

The genuine, unbothered warmth in his voice instantly dissolved their embarrassment. Leonard wrapped a thick, protective arm around his wife’s shoulders, a fiercely proud grin breaking across his rugged face, while Eleanor leaned into the embrace, her blush giving way to a soft, radiant smile of pure joy.

”Thank you, ’Laric,” Leonard murmured, his voice thick with emotion.

Alaric offered them one last, lingering look of absolute fondness before taking a deliberate step backward. ”I’ll excuse myself now and give you two some privacy to finish the inventory. I have a rather massive architectural project I need to take care of before I head back to the Keep.”

His parents nodded their heads, their eyes filled with a mixture of pride and lingering awe as they watched his broad back retreat through the warehouse doors, seamlessly returning to their duties with a renewed, vibrant energy.

Exiting the warehouse, Alaric walked purposefully toward the very edge of the deep-water port.

The harbor was currently populated by a dozen ordinary merchant galleons, their wooden hulls bobbing gently against the docks. Alaric stopped at the edge of the stone pier, looking out over the water. He didn’t want his masterpiece to collide with the mundane vessels. With a subtle, dismissive wave of his right hand, he channeled a precise current of Wind and Water Release, gently but firmly pushing the anchored ships several hundred yards down the coastline, clearing a massive, pristine expanse of the Delaware River.

Now possessing an empty, watery canvas, Alaric raised his hands to his chest.

He didn’t rely on a single, lazy gesture this time. He wanted absolute, terrifying perfection.

Snake. Ram. Boar. Dog. Tiger.

His hands blurred through the dramatic, complex sequence of seals, his golden chakra flaring brilliantly into the midday sun, casting a radiant, god-like halo around his silhouette.

”Wood Release: Armada Genesis!”

The river violently convulsed. The surface of the water boiled and churned as massive, twisting roots of ancient, chakra-infused timber erupted from the muddy depths. The wood groaned and shrieked as it grew at a microscopic, hyper-accelerated pace, weaving itself into the flawless, indestructible skeletons of thirty majestic warships.

In the span of a single, breathtaking minute, the empty shore was populated by a perfectly aligned armada. Ten heavy, heavily reinforced brigs and twenty sleek, aerodynamic schooners rested upon the water, their dark, polished hulls gleaming with an ominous, impenetrable vitality. It was exactly the fleet configuration Reuben and Thulani had requested to shatter the naval blockade of two empires.

But the ships were unarmed.

Alaric’s electric-blue eyes bled into the crimson geometry of his Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan.

”Vulcan.”

He reached his hands outward, his will seizing the raw iron ore buried deep within the earth and the premium steel stockpiled in his dimensional inventory. The metals liquefied mid-air, swirling into a blinding, molten storm above the harbor before plummeting downward. The liquid metal poured into the newly grown gun decks of the thirty vessels, rapidly cooling and forging into the sturdiest, lightest, and most ballistically perfect cannons and cannonballs the world had ever seen.

The heavy artillery was installed with immaculate, mathematical precision; the miscellaneous outfitting of rigging and sails could be easily managed by the Vanguard crews later.

With the physical architecture complete, Alaric severed his connection to gravity, floating slowly upward until he hovered fifty feet above the center of the newly minted armada.

He closed his eyes, his mind shifting from creation to enhancement. He didn’t want to apply the standard Asura’s Crest to these vessels. The original seal provided a catastrophic boost in physical parameters and durability, but its operational lifespan was capped at three years. He wanted something permanent, an enchantment that would endure the long, brutal campaigns of a global war if he ever disappeared into the ether for a prolonged period.

He took a deep breath, his hands coming together in a mesmerizing, impossible flurry of motion.

He executed exactly two hundred and seventy hand seals, his fingers snapping through the esoteric syntax of reality-bending Fuinjutsu faster than the human eye could process, weaving a spell of unparalleled density.

”Asura’s Crest... Version Two.”

The moment the final seal locked into place, the very air above the harbor began to violently ripple.

Thousands of microscopic, jet-black kanji materialized out of absolute nothingness, swirling around Alaric like a localized, inky typhoon. The sky darkened momentarily as the sheer volume of the sealing script blotted out the sun. Then, acting on his silent command, the storm of black ink rained downward, aggressively plastering itself across the hulls, the masts, and the cannons of the thirty warships.

The entire armada was coated in a dense, shifting layer of black calligraphy. A second later, the ink flashed with a blinding, ethereal light, sinking permanently into the atomic structure of the wood and metal before disappearing completely, leaving no visual trace of the ten-year invulnerability enchantment now shielding the fleet.

Alaric lowered his hands, looking down at his flawless creation with a slow, profound nod of absolute satisfaction. He didn’t linger to wait for the inevitable, breathless praise or the shocked shouts of the Vanguard operatives who had undoubtedly witnessed the miracle from the shore.

His task was done. He had a family waiting for him.

FLASH.

The air clapped sharply as the golden light of the Hiraishin claimed him, erasing him from the sky above the harbor in an instant.

Kenway Keep - Philadelphia - Pennsylvania

When the golden light deposited Alaric seamlessly into the sunlit expanse of the master living room, the immediate sound that greeted him was a soft, melodious giggle.

Kassandra was sitting on the plush carpet near the massive stone fireplace, her long, dark hair falling in loose waves over her shoulder as she played with little Hunter. She was gently bouncing a small, intricately carved wooden horse across the floor, making exaggerated clopping noises that had their two-year-old son squealing with pure, unadulterated delight.

Sensing the subtle displacement of air, Kassandra turned her head. Her amber eyes lit up with a warm, welcoming smile as she spotted Alaric standing near the center of the room. She immediately scooped Hunter up into her arms, standing gracefully and walking toward him.

”You should carry your son for a while before you disappear again, Agápi Mou,” Kassandra teased softly, pressing the giggling toddler into Alaric’s massive, waiting arms.

Alaric smiled, a deep, genuine expression of peace washing over his features as he adjusted his grip, pulling the boy securely against his chest. He looked down into Hunter’s bright, electric-blue eyes, his heart swelling with a profound, anchoring happiness that no amount of geopolitical conquest could ever replicate.

Kassandra reached out, gently smoothing a stray lock of hair from Hunter’s forehead before looking up at Alaric, her expression shifting into one of quiet, maternal reflection.

”I always ensure I carve out time every single day to play with him or feed him,” Kassandra murmured, her voice laced with a deep, reverent gratitude. ”I am so incredibly happy that I actually get the chance to be a mother to such a beautiful, perfect boy this time around. But...”

She let out a soft, guilty sigh, her shoulders dropping slightly. ”I am constantly so busy managing the sprawling logistics of the Vanguard and the intelligence networks. Every time I have to step away from him to attend to the kingdom’s shadows, a terrible guilt eats at me for not spending every waking second by his side. That is exactly why I am so profoundly grateful to Eleanor, Leonard, Bernard, Linette, Edward, Caroline, and even Elizabeth and Aveline. Knowing that they are always here to fiercely protect and care for him when we are drowning in our duties... it makes the burden bearable.”

Alaric listened to her confession, his blue eyes softening as he recognized the heavy, ancient scars of her past life echoing in her current anxieties. He leaned down, pressing a lingering, incredibly tender kiss against Hunter’s chubby cheek, making the baby squirm and giggle again.

”It just means that I am going to have to do something about the lingering threats in the other world significantly faster,” Alaric promised, his voice carrying the unwavering certainty of a man who bent reality to his whims. He looked up, meeting Kassandra’s gaze with a fierce, reassuring light. ”I’ll clean up the board so that we can finally take the entire family on a nice, long, uninterrupted vacation away from all this administrative stress.”

Kassandra’s guilt melted into a brilliant, relieved smile, and she offered a firm, appreciative nod of her head.

”While I am away,” Alaric continued, shifting into a more tactical register while keeping his hold on his son gentle, ”I am going to leave a specialized clone behind in this world to actively recruit more operatives into the Vanguard. The war with the empires is looming, and relying solely on my power and judgment is the most efficient way to find and vet the absolute best people to fill our ranks.”

Kassandra raised a curious brow, her tactical mind instantly catching the logistical hurdle. ”And how exactly will I know who to officially accept into the inner circle? If you are not here to verify them, how do I trust the new blood?”

”You won’t have to guess,” Alaric replied smoothly. ”The people my clone recruits will arrive at the gates of the Kenway Keep already bearing the Asura’s Crest inked onto their backs. The clone will be the one explicitly tasked with running their brutal training regimens so that you don’t have to waste any more of your precious time acting as a drill sergeant. You could even switch operational duties with the clone if you need a break, but...”

Alaric paused, his expression turning entirely serious. ”You must treat the clone strictly as a subordinate entity. It is not me. It will not possess my complete consciousness while active.”

Kassandra absorbed the instruction, understanding the necessary emotional detachment required. She nodded her head firmly. ”I understand.”

Satisfied, Alaric willed a fraction of his vast reserves to separate.

With a soft, rushing sound, a Wood Clone smoothly detached itself from Alaric’s back, stepping onto the carpet beside them. However, unlike his usual, identical duplicates, Alaric had deliberately altered the physical parameters of this specific entity to ensure there was no psychological confusion for his wife.

The clone did not possess platinum-blonde hair or piercing blue eyes. It manifested with dark black hair and flat, obsidian-black eyes, and it was dressed strictly in the standard olive-green flak jacket and dark blue uniform of a Konoha Jonin. Kassandra wasn’t necessarily surprised by the profound physical alteration; she had seen him manipulate cellular structures before.

”This specific clone retains at least thirty percent of my original, total power output,” Alaric explained, gesturing to the silent, black-haired duplicate. ”That is more than sufficient to allow it to run effortlessly around this planet, crossing oceans and continents to hunt for recruits without degrading. However, if there is ever an emergency... a truly disastrous, apocalyptic threat that you cannot handle... you must order the clone to immediately dispel itself.”

He looked deeply into Kassandra’s eyes, ensuring the fail-safe was understood. ”The time dilation between our two worlds will not matter. The moment the clone shatters, its accumulated memories and your distress signal will transfer across the dimensional void and hit my mind instantly. I will come back.”

Kassandra smiled, a fierce, trusting light in her amber eyes, and nodded her head. ”I’ve got it, Agápi Mou.”

Alaric let out a soft sigh, the weight of his impending departure finally settling over him. He gently leaned forward, carefully transferring the babbling Hunter back into Kassandra’s waiting arms.

”I really have to go back now,” Alaric murmured, his voice thick with reluctance as his hand lingered for a second on his son’s small back.

”When do you think you will come back here again?” Kassandra asked, holding Hunter close to her chest as she looked up at him, a familiar, aching longing already touching her voice.

”I honestly don’t know the exact timeline,” Alaric admitted, running a hand through his hair. ”But I promise I’ll drop back here every once in a while, spending a few hours or a day with you guys before I jump back into the other world to finish the job.”

Kassandra nodded her head, accepting the jagged reality of their fractured lives. She stepped fully into his space, tilting her chin up, and captured his lips in a deep, passionate, completely uninhibited French kiss that tasted of sorrow and desperate devotion.

She broke the kiss after a long, breathless moment, resting her forehead against his chin as she offered him a brilliant, reassuring smile.

”You go and do exactly what you need to do, Alaric,” Kassandra promised, her voice laced with the unwavering strength of a Spartan commander. ”I will be perfectly fine. I will be incredibly busy managing the Vanguard, looking after our sprawling family, and handling any tedious political conversations with William Penn. Do not worry about us. Just win every fights that come.”

Alaric smiled, his heart swelling with an absolute, undeniable love for the fierce woman standing before him. He leaned down, pressing one final, tender kiss to her temple.

”I love you,” Alaric whispered into her hair.

Before the sorrow of parting could fully anchor him to the room, he commanded his chakra.

FLASH.

The golden light erupted and vanished, leaving the space where he had stood entirely empty.

Kassandra stood in the quiet living room, the lingering scent of his cigar smoke drifting through the air. She held little Hunter securely against her hip, turning her gaze toward the silent, black-haired wood clone that had remained perfectly, unnervingly still throughout the entire emotional exchange.

An awkward, heavy silence settled between them.

”So...” Kassandra began, clearing her throat as she shifted her weight, looking at the emotionless face of the duplicate. ”...should I still call you Alaric?”

”You may call me whatever you wish, Commander,” the wood clone replied. Its voice was technically Alaric’s, but it was stripped entirely of its warmth, its lazy arrogance, and its humanity. It was cold, mechanical, and purely operational.

Kassandra let out a small, relieved smile, murmuring under her breath, ”Well, you are certainly unlike him... but I suppose that actually makes it significantly better. It will be easier to give you orders.”

She straightened her spine, slipping seamlessly into her role as the absolute authority of the Vanguard in his absence.

”Your primary directive is to immediately begin recruiting people,” Kassandra ordered, her amber eyes hardening with strategic intent. ”It does not matter if these individuals are scattered across the furthest, darkest corners of different continents. The Vanguard requires a massive influx of forces to prepare for the coming continental war. While quality remains paramount, we desperately need quantity as well. Go.”

The wood clone offered a single, crisp nod of its head, accepting the parameters without question. It reached into its flak jacket, withdrawing a specialized, customized Hiraishin tag, and handed it formally to Kassandra.

”Inject your chakra into this specific seal if you require my immediate presence, Commander,” the clone instructed flatly.

Kassandra took the paper tag, securing it tightly within the folds of her dress. The very second her fingers left the parchment, the clone vanished in a blur of pure, untraceable speed, embarking on its global hunt.

Left entirely alone in the massive room, Kassandra looked down at baby Hunter. The toddler was completely unbothered by the sudden disappearances, happily giggling as he played with the golden buttons of his mother’s dress.

Kassandra let out a soft, affectionate sigh, her heart aching slightly as she gently stroked his soft, dark hair.

”I am so, so sorry that your parents are such incredibly busy people, my little lion,” Kassandra whispered softly, a profound, maternal guilt touching her smile. ℴ

Seemingly understanding the melancholy in her voice, or perhaps merely responding to her warmth, little Hunter let out a happy squeak. He reached up with his chubby little hands, grabbing onto her cheeks with surprising strength, and clumsily pulled himself up to press a wet, messy kiss directly onto her chin.

The pure, innocent affection instantly melted the remaining shadows from her heart. Kassandra beamed, her eyes shining with unshed tears of joy, and she leaned down to shower his soft, squishy cheeks with a dozen rapid, loving kisses, the quiet living room filling once more with the beautiful sound of her son’s laughter.
