Chapter 391: Chapter 390: The Will of Stone

Iwagakure War Camp - Land of Grass - Elemental Nations

The encampment in the Land of Grass did not resemble a military staging ground so much as it resembled an open-air graveyard waiting for the dirt to be turned over.

When Ōnoki of Both Scales finally touched down near the center of the camp, the very air seemed to reek of copper, burned flesh, and the unmistakable, suffocating stench of despair. Tents were shredded and sagging against broken wooden poles, while the ground beneath them had been churned into a necrotic mire of mud and coagulated blood.

Everywhere the Third Tsuchikage looked, his forces were broken.

His elite shinobi and kunoichi... warriors forged in the unforgiving, jagged mountains of the Earth Country... were scattered across the dirt in varying states of mutilation. Low, agonizing groans vibrated through the camp as hardened jōnin pressed filthy, blood-soaked rags against fatal wounds that would have killed lesser men hours ago. Kunoichi with trembling hands forced themselves to tie bandages tighter, their eyes hollow with exhaustion because there were simply not enough medic-nin left to tend to the dying.

Ōnoki’s jaw tightened so fiercely that his teeth audibly ground together. A profound, searing fury ignited within his chest, but he refused to let it bleed into his demeanor. Panic in a Kage bred panic in the ranks.

”Do not waste your breath on moaning,” Ōnoki commanded, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that carried an unyielding, stabilizing gravity. He walked methodically through the triage area, his small, aged frame projecting the immovability of a mountain. ”Scatter. Those who can still walk, assist the medics immediately. Stabilize the critical cases. Use earth jutsu to cauterize if you must, but keep them breathing.”

The sheer presence of the Tsuchikage acted as a sudden, structural anchor for the chaotic camp. Men and women swallowed their pain, nodding weakly as they scrambled to obey his calm, pragmatic directives, finding a desperate comfort in the fact that their leader had not abandoned them to the slaughter.

Having established a fragile order, Ōnoki drifted toward a shattered supply crate near the edge of the medical tents. He lowered himself onto the wood, allowing his aching back a moment’s reprieve. With a heavy sigh, he reached into his pouch and withdrew a standard military ration pill. It tasted like ash and bitter chalk, but he chewed it methodically, forcing the concentrated calories down his throat to sustain his failing stamina.

He had barely swallowed the pill when the frantic, desperate slapping of sandals against the mud broke his brief respite.

An Iwa scout burst from the surrounding tree line, his uniform torn and his face pale with sheer terror. He sprinted directly toward the Tsuchikage, dropping heavily to one knee and bowing his head so quickly he nearly drove his forehead into the dirt.

”Tsuchikage-sama!” the scout gasped, his chest heaving violently as he struggled to force oxygen back into his burning lungs.

”Report,” Ōnoki demanded quietly, though the wrinkles around his eyes deepened.

The scout swallowed hard, his voice trembling as he delivered the death knell. ”They are coming, Lord Tsuchikage. Dozens... no, hundreds of Konoha shinobi are advancing rapidly through the western quadrant. Their formation is aggressive, and their pace is unyielding. They are marching directly for our coordinates, and... and it seems they intend to put a definitive period on this war today.”

A thick, pulsing vein instantly materialized on Ōnoki’s forehead.

The sheer audacity of Konoha... the absolute, arrogant certainty that they could simply march into a sovereign war camp and wipe Iwagakure off the board... made his blood boil. Yet, he did not shout. He did not curse the Leaf to the heavens.

Ōnoki simply closed his eyes and gave a slow, terrifyingly calm nod of his head.

”I see,” Ōnoki murmured. ’They must’ve got some intel that I’ve just arrived and immediatley went into action...’

He pushed himself off the wooden crate, taking a few slow, deliberate steps forward before channeling his chakra. Gravity surrendered its hold on his frail body, and he began to float upwards.

Ōnoki rose higher, his small frame ascending above the broken tents, the bloodied stretchers, the cracked earth, and the exhausted, defeated faces of the Iwa war camp. At any other time, or in any other context, the sight might have looked almost absurd... a short, ancient man suspended in the air like a stubborn stone refusing to fall.

But no one laughed. No one even breathed too loudly.

The Third Tsuchikage looked down at them all.

He saw boys with the dust of battle still clinging to their tear-streaked cheeks. He saw veterans whose eyes had gone dark with the quiet rot of defeat, a psychological infection spreading far faster than any physical poison Konoha’s medical division could have brewed.

And then, from the dense tree line beyond the camp’s perimeter, he felt it.

The subtle, synchronized displacement of air. The rhythmic, approaching hum of hundreds of distinct chakra signatures pressing in from the west. He didn’t need a sensory ninja to confirm it; he knew the disciplined, overwhelming presence of their enemies. Konoha had arrived.

Ōnoki’s jaw tightened. For a fleeting, heavy moment, his old eyes lowered, and his expression became entirely unreadable.

Down in the mud, the men nearest to him stared up at their Kage, thinking he might finally order a retreat. Some even desperately hoped for it. They had been losing for days; every skirmish, every ambush, every desperate attempt to regain lost ground had ended with Iwa shinobi being dragged back bleeding, burned, or simply not returning at all. The war was lost. Survival was the only victory left.

Then, Ōnoki raised his head.

His voice cracked across the silent camp like solid stone splitting under immense tectonic pressure.

”Shinobi of Iwagakure!”

The camp froze. Even the dying turned their heads, their glazed eyes seeking the man hovering above them.

Ōnoki floated higher, his heavy robes shifting violently in the wind as a localized vortex of dust began to circle beneath him, answering the sheer density of his flaring chakra.

”Konoha is coming.”

The words landed heavily, dropping like anvils into the mud. A few of the younger, untested shinobi swallowed hard, their hands trembling. Others simply gripped their cracked weapons tighter, bracing for the inevitable end.

Ōnoki did not soften his voice; he projected it so that it struck every soul in the valley.

”They believe this war is already finished,” Ōnoki declared, his tone laced with a cold, absolute venom. ”They believe we are fundamentally broken. They believe that because we have bled, because we have lost ground, because our wounded fill this camp and our medic-nin cannot keep pace with our dead... that the stone beneath our feet has already cracked.”

His eyes narrowed, hard, ancient, and unyielding.

”They are wrong.”

A low, uncertain murmur passed through the battered Iwa ranks.

Ōnoki raised a weathered hand, pointing a single, accusing finger toward the western treeline where the approaching enemy lurked.

”Do you know why they are wrong?”

He let the question hang over them, suspending it in the damp air, heavy enough that even the injured seemed to forget their agonizing pain for a single, suspended breath.

”Because I am here.”

The camp went utterly, breathlessly silent.

Ōnoki’s old face hardened into a mask of pure, foundational authority, and the air around him seemed to physically thicken beneath the crushing weight of his intent.

”I did not crawl out of the safety of Iwagakure and cross into the Land of Grass to watch my shinobi die on their knees,” Ōnoki roared, his voice vibrating with a power that defied his age. ”I did not come here to count bodies, lower my head, and hand Konohagakure another victory wrapped in their precious, hypocritical speeches about peace.”

His voice grew sharper, edged with the indomitable pride of a man who had survived too many global slaughters to be intimidated by another.

”I am Ōnoki of Both Scales! I have buried comrades, enemies, students, rivals, and men far stronger than many of you have ever seen! I have stood before monsters who thought the very world belonged to them simply because they possessed enough power to demand it!”

For the briefest, terrifying moment, something old and impossibly dark passed behind his eyes... the phantom memory of a red-armored ghost with spinning crimson eyes, demanding submission.

”And I am still here.”

The words struck harder than a physical shout. It was a testament to endurance.

He lowered his hand, pointing not only toward the advancing Konoha forces now, but sweeping his arm to encompass the entirety of the bloody battlefield itself.

”So listen well! From this moment forward, this camp does not retreat. This camp does not break. This camp does not wait for Konoha to generously decide the shape of this war.”

His voice thundered, echoing off the distant ridges.

”From this moment forward, we turn the tide.”

Down in the mud, the first, fragile spark of hope appeared in the eyes of the Iwa shinobi. It wasn’t a comforting hope. It wasn’t the promise of safety or a warm hearth. It was a hope forged entirely of grit, deep-seated anger, and exhausted pride.

Ōnoki saw the shift in their posture and pressed his advantage relentlessly.

”Konoha believes it has momentum. Good,” Ōnoki sneered, a hard, feral smile carving itself across his weathered face. ”Momentum makes men arrogant. It makes them charge faster than they think. It makes them believe every wounded enemy is already a corpse, and every broken line is already conquered.”

His smile widened, devoid of any warmth.

”Then let them come with that arrogance.”

He pointed toward the forest once more.

”Let them rush toward us thinking they are merely chasing the end of a war, and we will show them that they have only reached the foot of the mountain!”

The Iwa-nin began to shift. Backs that had been bowed under the weight of despair straightened. Hands closed firmly around the hilts of swords and the shafts of spears.

Ōnoki’s voice rolled across the camp, unrelenting.

”Do you know what Konoha will say after today, if we fall here?” Ōnoki demanded, his tone dripping with acidic contempt. ”They will not say they slaughtered tired, broken men. They will not say they came to crush a wounded camp with overwhelming numbers and momentum. No.”

He shook his head, his eyes burning with the bitter truth of history.

”They will return to their pristine village, stand beneath their pretty, sunlit trees, and speak of righteousness. They will speak of peace. They will proudly speak of their precious Will of Fire as if fire does not blindly devour everything it touches.”

The older Iwa-nin went perfectly still. Some of the veterans knew that specific tone. Some had heard it before, decades ago, when the name Madara Uchiha was still spoken like a living curse across the continent.

”Konoha has always wrapped its bloody ambition in noble words,” Ōnoki continued, his voice lowering into a lethal, grinding register. ”They call themselves protectors. They call themselves the absolute heart of the shinobi world. They smile warmly while their Hokage sends children to die in the mud. They preach unity while their prestigious clans hoard bloodlines like royal treasures. They speak of justice while standing over the bodies of those who simply refused to kneel to their hegemony.”

His hands curled slowly into tight, trembling fists.

”And when the Stone refuses to bow, suddenly we are the villains.”

Ōnoki’s chakra flared, a visible, suffocating aura of power.

”And now they come here, to the Land of Grass, not to defend their homes, not to protect their families, but to erase us from this battlefield solely so they can call it a victory.”

The fear in the camp began to change.

It did not vanish; fear never truly vanished before the clash of steel. But it hardened. It calcified into something infinitely more dangerous.

Ōnoki saw the anger rising in their eyes and pressed harder.

”They think Iwagakure is weak because we do not sing flowery songs about love before we kill. They think we are crude because we do not dress our wars in pretty leaves and funeral poetry. They think stone is dull, heavy, and ugly.”

He smiled then, a cold, terrifying expression.

”Good.”

A few shinobi looked up, their breathing shallow.

”Let them think that.”

His voice deepened, carrying across the camp with the unstoppable weight of a falling mountain.

”Fire dances. Fire boasts. Fire burns bright for a fleeting moment and has the audacity to call itself eternal.”

Ōnoki lifted one hand toward the sky, and instantly, small stones and loose pebbles around the camp began to tremble. They lifted from the blood-soaked ground, hovering in the air as if answering his absolute command over the earth.

”But stone remembers.”

”Stone remembers every single betrayal. Every unmarked grave. Every comrade buried under foreign soil. Stone remembers the crushing weight of every village that looked down on us, and every arrogant enemy that thought Iwa would kneel simply because the battle became difficult.”

His eyes burned with unadulterated defiance.

”And stone does not kneel.”

He swept his gaze over the wounded, the bleeding, and the exhausted.

”You are wounded? Good. Then you already know that pain cannot kill you unless you willingly surrender to it. You are afraid? Good. Only fools feel absolutely nothing when death approaches. But you are not fools.”

His voice swelled into a roaring crescendo.

”You are Iwa shinobi! You were not raised beneath soft leaves and warm stories! You were raised by sheer cliffs, choking dust, iron, and stone! You were taught that a shinobi does not need comfort to stand! He only needs purpose!”

Ōnoki turned slightly, squaring his shoulders toward the direction of Konoha’s advance.

”And today, your purpose is brutally simple.”

The camp fell into a breathless silence once more.

”You will not give Konoha a clean victory.”

His words became slower, colder, and infinitely heavier.

”You will not let them march into this camp and write the ending of this war with our blood. You will not let them carry home arrogant stories about how Iwagakure broke when pressed hard enough.”

He extended his arm, pointing directly at the advancing vanguard.

”If Konoha wants this camp, then they will buy every single step with bodies. If they want our wounded, they will have to climb over our living first. If they want our banner, they will have to tear it from hands that no longer have the strength to open!”

The Iwa shinobi began to straighten one by one... slowly.

Then all at once, a unified, unyielding wall of men and women who had decided they would rather die on their feet than live on their knees.

Ōnoki’s voice rose to a fever pitch.

”They call it the Will of Fire!” he spat the phrase like toxic ash. ”Then let them bring it!”

The stones hovering around him suddenly shot outward with bullet-like velocity, slamming into the ground around the camp’s perimeter to form rough, jagged pillars of earth... monuments of defiance.

”We are the Will of Stone!”

His chakra flared, an explosive, visible distortion in the air.

”We do not flicker! We do not bend to the wind! We do not vanish when the rain comes! We endure pressure until pressure itself breaks against us!”

The Iwa shinobi began to shout now, not loudly enough to become a feral roar just yet, but enough that the wounded could hear it, enough that the suffocating fear in the air began to entirely lose its shape.

Ōnoki looked down at them, and for the very first time since arriving in the mud, his expression carried something fierce, protective, and almost fatherly beneath the ancient anger.

”Look around you.”

They did. They looked at the bloody, battered faces of the men and women standing beside them.

”These are your comrades. These are the people who have eaten beside you, marched beside you, and bled beside you. Konoha is not coming to merely defeat an army. They are coming to kill them.”

His voice dropped, becoming more intimate despite reaching every single ear in the valley.

”So decide now. Not when the first kunai flies. Not when the first fireball tears through the canvas tents. Decide now.”

He held out both of his arms, embracing the battered legion.

”Are you corpses waiting for Konoha to collect!?”

Then came a pause. A collective, grounding breath overtook the audience.

Then several shinobi shouted back, their voices raw with grit. ”No!”

Ōnoki’s eyes hardened.

”Are you children begging the Leaf for mercy!?”

This time, the answer came louder, rippling through the ranks like thunder.

”NO!”

”Are you stone!?”

The roar came from every side, a deafening, unified shockwave that shook the very earth beneath their feet.

”YES!”

Ōnoki’s chakra surged even higher, a localized tempest of dust spiraling violently around him as the ground beneath the entire camp trembled in response to their unified will.

”THEN STAND!”

The Stratosphere - Above the Land of Grass

While Ōnoki was busy meticulously weaving pride and rage into a shattered army, hundreds of elite Konoha shinobi were moving silently through the forest toward the Iwa War Camp. They had received intelligence regarding the exact coordinates of the enemy stronghold, and the tactical layout was flawlessly accurate.

How had Shikaku Nara acquired such pristine, real-time intelligence?

Well, Alaric Jonathan Kenway was always the person they would ask when they needed to cheat.

Right now, Alaric was hovering high up in the crisp, freezing air of the stratosphere. While Ōnoki was floating a mere thirty feet above his men, Alaric was suspended hundreds of meters above the Tsuchikage, utterly imperceptible to the world below, leaning back as if reclining in an invisible armchair.

He observed the passionate, desperate rallying cry with a calm, analytical eye.

”Heh... such a nice, poetic way to twist the narrative up,” Alaric murmured to himself, a lazy, cynical smirk curving his lips. ”Considering he’s the one who enthusiastically accepted embezzled money to wage this shadow war first.”

Through the Mind’s Eye of the Kagura, Alaric watched the massive, coordinated shift in the Iwa camp’s chakra. He saw the broken men and women physically pulling themselves together, taking up defensive positions behind their newly erected earth walls, their spirits hardening into unbreakable diamond as they prepared to fend off the impending Konoha assault. It was a beautiful display of leadership, undeniably.

Alaric reached into the inner pocket of his flak jacket, retrieving a premium cigar. He snapped his fingers to light the tip, taking a long, savory drag as he looked down at the inevitable collision of the two great armies.

”Heh...” Alaric smirked, exhaling a thick plume of smoke that was instantly snatched away by the high-altitude winds. ”This’ll be interesting.”
