Chapter 358: Chapter 357: The Lightning and the Corsair

---Previously---

”Do you really think,” Alaric called out, his voice laced with patronizing clarity, ”that I don’t know you’re just stalling for time to charge your jutsu?”

Pein raised a single, pale brow, maintaining his facade of absolute, unbothered superiority.

”I don’t know what you are talking about,” Pein replied coldly.

With a swift, decisive motion, Pein raised his right arm, holding his pale hand out directly toward Alaric. The gravitational forces of the world bent to his absolute will, compressing violently into a singular, devastating point of repulsion in his palm.

”Shinra...” Pein commanded, his voice echoing with the promise of destruction.

Alaric didn’t flinch. He merely removed his cigar, his smile turning razor-sharp as he finished the god’s sentence.

”...Tensei.”

---Now---

The Stratosphere - Above Amegakure

The world held its breath for a fraction of a second, caught in the terrifying, silent vacuum that preceded divine wrath.

When Pein released the pent-up, catastrophic pressure of his Shinra Tensei, he did not simply push the air; he commanded the fundamental architecture of space to violently reject everything within its domain. There was no restraint. He unleashed the absolute maximum output of the Deva Path, pouring an ocean of chakra into the singular, tyrannical desire to erase the blonde anomaly from the heavens.

The resulting shockwave defied the bounds of natural phenomena.

It erupted outward as a flawless, invisible sphere of absolute destruction, moving at speeds that tore the very fabric of the atmosphere. The heavy, bruised clouds that had blanketed Amegakure for decades were instantly vaporized, blown backward into a massive, rapidly expanding ring of clear sky.

Below, the structural integrity of the weeping city groaned and shattered. Towering spires of steel and concrete, designed to withstand the harshest storms, were sheared cleanly off their foundations, collapsing into the flooded streets as the kinetic pressure flattened the upper canopy of the hidden village.

High above the devastation, there was no smoke to obscure the view, no dust or rubble to hide behind in the thin, frigid air of the stratosphere. The sky had been wiped immaculately, horrifyingly clean.

Pein lowered his pale hand, his breath coming in a faint, strained hitch as the immense exertion took its toll. He stared across the fifty-meter gap, expecting to see nothing but the empty, yawning abyss where his opponent had been atomized.

Instead, his violet, concentric eyes widened to an impossible degree.

Alaric Jonathan Kenway remained standing on the exact same coordinate of empty space. He had not been pushed back a single millimeter. The violent, atmospheric displacement had shrieked past him, tearing the sky apart, yet the platinum-blonde hair framing his sharp face had not so much as fluttered. The rich, aromatic smoke curling from the lit cigar clamped between his lips continued to drift lazily upward, entirely undisturbed by the apocalypse that had just rushed over him.

”What...?”

The single word slipped past Pein’s lips, carrying a rare, profound tremor of disbelief. It was a failure that his god-complex simply could not process. The most destructive, absolute jutsu in his arsenal... a force capable of flattening mountains... hadn’t even managed to touch the fabric of the man’s coat.

Alaric took the cigar from his mouth, tapping the ash into the windless void with a calm, predatory smirk.

”Kamui,” Alaric supplied helpfully, introducing the esoteric mechanic with the breezy tone of a tutor grading a practical exam. ”Interesting, isn’t it? Slipping entirely into a pocket dimension to let the storm pass right through you. It’s the signature, original jutsu of the man who currently proclaims to be Madara.”

”...”

Pein did not reply. The revelation that his ”benefactor” possessed an ability that rendered one completely immune to the Deva Path’s ultimate strike was a tactical nightmare, but he forced the realization down, locking it away. He observed the towering blonde with renewed, chilling intensity, his mind racing to calculate the sheer depth of the man’s intelligence network.

”It seems,” Pein murmured, his voice regaining its flat, synthetic resonance, ”you know a great deal about things that do not concern you.”

”Of course I do,” Alaric grinned, the expression turning feral as he casually tossed the cigar away.

He lifted his right hand, pointing his index and middle fingers toward the newly cleared, pristine blue sky. ”For instance, I know that you aren’t a god. You’re just a grieving boy playing with corpses.”

Alaric’s blue eyes bled into the geometric crimson of his Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan.

”And I also know,” Alaric declared, his voice echoing with absolute, thundering certainty, ”that the Rinnegan on your eye sockets aren’t even yours.”

Pein froze, the accusation piercing straight through the divine armor he had spent a lifetime forging.

Before the Deva Path could process the world-shattering implication of those words, a terrifying, high-frequency screech erupted from Alaric’s outstretched hand. Pure, unadulterated electric chakra surged from his fingertips, a blinding geyser of white-blue lightning that shot directly upward into the heavens.

The electrical discharge was so impossibly dense that it violently ionized the stratosphere. The clear sky Alaric had just praised darkened instantly as the unnatural current forcefully seeded the atmosphere, dragging massive, roiling thunderheads into existence within a matter of seconds. The clouds churned, turning a bruised, violent black as static electricity arced across the firmament, answering the call of its master.

From the heart of the roaring tempest, a colossal beast of pure, concentrated lightning took shape. A mythological dragon composed of raw, screaming plasma descended from the clouds, its jaws gaping wide to swallow the false god.

Alaric brought his hand down with the finality of an executioner.

”...Kirin.”

Holy Commonwealth of Pennmere - The Port of Philadelphia

Edward James Kenway had always lived his life navigating by his own unruly compass.

As a young man burning with restless ambition, he had deeply despised the aristocratic arrogance of Caroline’s father, a man who had sneered at the Kenway family and dismissed them as nothing more than the obedient dogs of William Penn. That sting of class prejudice had fueled Edward’s rebellious streak. He hadn’t liked it when his cousin, Alaric, had masterfully maneuvered through high society, leveraging William Penn’s immense political power to generate their early, staggering wealth in Bristol. Edward had craved his own legend. He wanted to carve his own fortune from the world using nothing but his wits, the salt spray of the sea, and the sharp edge of a cutlass.

That reckless hunger for independence had driven him to the chaotic life of a privateer, and eventually, into the bloody, lawless brotherhood of piracy under the infamous Abel Bramah.

He had sailed with legends. He had shared rum and gunpowder with men and women who defied empires... Benjamin Hornigold, the terrifying Edward ”Blackbeard” Thatch, the volatile Charles Vane, the enigmatic James Kidd, the fierce Anne Bonny, and the cunning Jack Rackham. They were a pantheon of thieves, and Edward had reveled in the chaotic romance of their freedom.

But then, Alaric had pulled him from the edge of the abyss.

When his cousin had forcefully extracted him from the pirate life, Edward had been furious, until the truth was laid bare in his arms. He had discovered he was a father. The very first time he had looked down into the bright, innocent eyes of his daughter, Jennifer Scott-Kenway, the intoxicating allure of the pirate’s republic had evaporated. The desperate chase for Spanish gold no longer mattered when he held the absolute greatest treasure a man could ever possess.

Thankfully, the harsh realities of providing for a family were entirely mitigated by Caroline’s wealth. And by rich, she possessed the kind of untouchable, world-altering money generated by the Kenway family’s sprawling Celestial business empire. Edward knew, with a profound and humbling clarity, that the architect of this idyllic, secure life was Alaric. Because of his cousin’s ruthless foresight, Edward was fiercely, eternally thankful.

Immersed in the vast network of the Kenway empire, Edward had naturally been introduced to the Vanguard, and through them, to the ancient, whispered history of the Assassins.

Initially, judging purely by the sheer, obscene wealth Alaric commanded, Edward had cynically assumed his cousin was just another corrupt tyrant draped in fine velvet. But as he witnessed the Assassins... men and women sworn to dismantle the chains of tyranny... willingly side with Alaric, Edward’s perspective shifted. He fell in love with the romance of their Creed, recognizing that Alaric’s wealth was not a tool of oppression, but the very weapon they used to sever the chains of corruption across the globe. Through this alliance, Edward had forged close bonds with the Italian branch, sharing wine and tactics with Matteo Auditore, the head of the brotherhood, and Flavia Auditore, Reuben’s fiercely capable wife.

Right now, standing amidst the busy, organized chaos of the Philadelphia ports, Edward cut a striking figure. He wore an upgraded, masterfully tailored version of Duncan Walpole’s Assassin robes, the deep blues and whites blending seamlessly with the maritime environment, hidden blades resting securely beneath his leather bracers.

”Let’s go?”

Edward turned his head at the soft, familiar voice. Approaching him against the backdrop of towering masts and billowing sails was his wife, Caroline. She was dressed in a simple, elegant gown that favored practicality over aristocratic excess, a modest traveling cloak draped over her shoulders.

He couldn’t help but smile, a wry, affectionate expression crossing his rugged features. ”You really plan on going with me into the Caribbean?”

”Of course,” Caroline smiled, stepping close and locking her hand comfortably into his. Her eyes sparkled with a fearless, adventurous light that had always captivated him. ”What? Are you scared for me, Captain?”

Edward raised a thick brow before shaking his head with a low, rumbling chuckle. ”No, hardly. Alaric told me straight to my face that after whatever training he put you through, you can dodge musket balls and kick my ass ten times over if you really wanted to. I believe him... I just don’t want to leave Jennifer with no mother to care for her if things get messy.”

”It’s going to be fine, Edward,” Caroline reassured him, her grip tightening affectionately as she led the way down the busy pier toward the sleek, heavily armed frigate moored at the end of the dock. ”Jennifer’s already a big, strong girl... and besides, she’s getting the absolute best treatment and protection in the Keep under Linette and Eleanor’s watchful eyes. There is no need to worry.”

Edward took a moment to stare at his wife, marveling at the quiet, unyielding strength she possessed, before nodding his head in surrender. ”Alright, milady. Lead the way.”

As they walked up the wooden gangplank, the heavy scent of tar and salt air washing over them, they stepped onto the immaculate deck of The Wraithling... the most feared and technologically advanced frigate operating under the Vanguard Organization.

Waiting for them near the quarterdeck, leaning casually against the polished wooden rail with his arms folded across his chest, was Reuben. The Shadow Raven wore his dark, tactical coat, a sharp, knowing smirk playing on his lips as he watched the couple board his vessel.

”My, my, your letter certainly surprised me,” Reuben greeted, pushing himself off the rail. ”All the way down to Nassau... you got some urgent business brewing in the pirate republic?”

”It’s been a while, Reuben. I don’t get to see you quite as often these days,” Edward nodded his head, extending a hand to his old friend. ”But yes, I have some pressing business there... and as I wrote in the missive, Alaric explicitly agreed to the excursion.”

”Well, I have to make my patrol rounds sailing down to Barbados anyway, so you’re quite in luck,” Reuben replied, taking Edward’s hand in a firm, warrior’s grip. He gestured toward the hatch leading below deck. ”I’ve already stocked up on everything we need for the voyage, so head down to my quartermaster. He’ll show you to the luxury cabins we’ve prepared for you two. It’s your first time boarding The Wraithling, right? Don’t worry about keeping watch; you won’t have to lift a finger if anyone decides to be foolish enough to attack us. I mean... it is the strongest, fastest ship in all of Pennmere, after all.”

”Oh?” Caroline raised a delicate brow, a distinctly playful, teasing smirk curving her lips. ”I don’t think Thulani is going to like that statement very much. Considering how much absolute pride he takes in Liberty’s Wrath.”

”What, Liberty’s Wrath?” Reuben scoffed, turning to Caroline with a loud, dismissive chuckle. ”Let him come talk to me about it. I’ll gladly kick his ass across the deck to prove my point.”

”Alright, alright, put your swords away,” Edward laughed, finally tugging gently on Caroline’s wrist and offering Reuben a wry, familiar smile. ”We’ll go find those rooms, yeah? Let’s not dilly-dally while the tide is in our favor.”

Reuben chuckled again, nodding his head as he watched Edward and Caroline navigate the busy deck, making their way toward the heavy oak doors leading to the lower quarters.

As they disappeared from view, the humor faded slightly from Reuben’s eyes, replaced by the sharp, calculating glint of an elite Vanguard commander. He remembered Alaric’s casual, yet terrifyingly precise reports regarding the sheer, physical enhancements he had gifted to his family members.

’I’m incredibly curious,’ Reuben mused silently, adjusting his sword belt as he turned his gaze toward the horizon. ’Just how unfathomably strong is Caroline right now...?’
