Konoha Forward Command Camp - Land of Grass

The pale, unforgiving light of dawn crept over the Land of Grass, bringing with it a profound, collective misery.

The previous night’s euphoric warmth had entirely faded, leaving the Konoha war camp locked in the brutal, uncompromising punishment called morning. The roaring bonfires had burned down to smoldering ash, discarded cups littered the trampled earth, and the heavy wooden crates that had once housed a king’s ransom in vintage alcohol sat wide open and completely bare. The expensive liquor Alaric had unsealed was completely gone.

The entire encampment looked as though it had barely survived a second, devastating war against alcohol, and definitively lost.

Shinobi packed their gear with the slow, excruciating caution of people who were terrified their own heads might detach and roll away. Elite Jonin, who just twenty-four hours prior had stared down Iwagakure’s heavy infantry without blinking, were now squinting at the morning sunlight as if it had personally insulted their ancestors.

Combat medics rubbed their pounding temples while desperately trying to organize inventory, and the designated camp cooks moved through the mist like reanimated corpses, glaring murderously at their own clanging pots.

At one point, a chunin accidentally dropped a metal frying pan against a stone; the sharp, ringing clatter caused half the camp to flinch and drop into defensive stances, reacting as if an explosive tag had just gone off in their midst.

Standing amidst the groaning wreckage, entirely unbothered and offensively unaffected, was Alaric Jonathan Kenway.

His black Vanguard uniform looked pristine against the mud and misery of the camp. A cigar rested comfortably between his lips as he surveyed the destruction with a mixture of profound awe and deep amusement. Because his anomalous biology processed toxins with terrifying efficiency, he was completely immune to the agonizing aftermath of the celebration.

Alaric had expected shinobi discipline to win against excess eventually. Instead, Konoha had treated hundreds of bottles of rare liquor as a battlefield objective and somehow achieved total operational success.

”I have to admit, it’s impressive,” Alaric murmured, exhaling a thin cloud of smoke.

Taking pity on the suffering army, Alaric rolled up his dark sleeves and waded into the logistical nightmare, helping the troops pack. He effortlessly lifted massive supply crates that usually required three men, securely sealed folded canvas tents, and carried heavy medical lockboxes toward the transport carts.

He paused to help a half-awake, swaying shinobi properly tie a complex knot on a supply bundle, then handed the pale man a canteen of freezing water.

”Thank you, Alaric-san...” the shinobi mumbled, taking the canteen with trembling hands.

”You’re welcome,” Alaric replied smoothly, a dry smirk touching his lips. ”You also look terrible.”

The shinobi nodded weakly, pressing the cold metal against his forehead. ”I feel worse.”

A few tents down, Haku was mirroring his mentor’s quiet efficiency.

Unlike the vast majority of the stumbling army, the Ice Demon looked completely, remarkably fine. Despite the brutal, high-altitude clash with the Tsuchikage just yesterday, he was already fully healed. The miraculous properties of the Ashura’s Crest had silently flushed the fatigue from his muscles and knit the torn flesh of his shoulder back together overnight. His chakra was perfectly steady, his teal kimono was clean, and his movements retained their usual smooth, quiet precision as he effortlessly hoisted supply crates and checked the bindings on the medic tents.

The other shinobi stared at him with a mixture of absolute disbelief and mild betrayal.

A senior medic, whose hands were still slightly stained with iodine from treating Haku’s Dust Release graze the evening before, approached him with a deeply furrowed brow.

”Yuki-san...” the medic began hesitantly, gesturing vaguely toward Haku’s unblemished shoulder. ”Weren’t you bleeding yesterday?”

Haku paused, setting a heavy crate onto a transport cart. He turned to the medic, offering a polite, serene smile. ”Yes.”

The medic waited, expecting a medical explanation or the revelation of a secret clan healing technique. A long, awkward silence stretched between them.

Haku smoothly continued tying the supply bundle, pulling the rope taut. ”I am no longer bleeding.”

A hungover chunin passing by, heavily offended by the sheer lack of detail, muttered, ”That does not answer the question.”

Haku turned his polite smile toward the grumbling soldier, his dark eyes entirely unbothered. ”I apologize.”

Then, without offering a single syllable of explanation, he simply returned to his work.

As the sun climbed higher, the army’s legendary discipline gradually, painfully began to override the hangovers. The Jonin commanders and squad leaders clapped their hands, wincing at their own noise, and began gathering their assigned teams. They organized headcounts, verified the stability of the wounded, checked supply seals, and confirmed marching orders.

Tsunade emerged from the main command tent, looking tired, slightly irritated, and undoubtedly nursing a dull ache behind her amber eyes, but she carried herself with the absolute, uncompromising competence of the Hokage.

She stood before the assembled commanders, outlining the withdrawal plan with crisp, military clarity. Konohagakure would not attempt to march directly back to the Fire Country in one, grueling push. They would travel to the allied borders of Kusagakure first, rest properly in secure lodging during the daylight hours, and then continue traveling again under the cover of night.

It was a flawlessly logical decision. The army was physically weakened, heavily burdened by wounded personnel, slow-moving support staff, and a crippling, camp-wide hangover. Kusagakure was still tens of kilometers away, and the terrain of the Land of Grass was notoriously uneven and inconvenient. The war had officially ended, yes, but Tsunade made it explicitly clear that the withdrawal still required absolute discipline.

”Travel in your assigned groups. No one wanders alone,” Tsunade commanded, her voice cutting through the morning fog. ”If one person in your squad needs a break, the nearby members also pause briefly so the formation does not stretch dangerously thin. Scouts will rotate ahead, and rear guards will stay awake. No showing off with speed unless explicitly ordered. And if anyone vomits on the road, you are personally responsible for cleaning your own sandals. Are we clear?”

A chorus of weak, subdued affirmatives echoed through the ranks.

Observing the logistical hurdle from a distance, Alaric sealed the last canvas bundle and casually approached the command group.

”I can go ahead and arrange lodging before this army limps into Kusagakure like a funeral procession with headaches,” Alaric offered mildly, sliding his hands into the pockets of his black trousers. It was a purely practical suggestion; he possessed the speed to reach the village in minutes… in seconds, the bottomless wealth to rent every inn in the country, and he wasn’t nursing a migraine.

Before he could even shift his weight to depart, Shikaku Nara stepped into his path.

The master strategist looked deeply exhausted, holding a small cup of incredibly bitter medicinal tea, but his dark eyes were terrifyingly sharp. He shook his head. ”No.”

Alaric raised a platinum-blonde brow.

Shikaku stepped closer, lowering his voice so the passing ranks could not eavesdrop on the tactical reality. ”The army is weakened right now, Alaric. Not defeated, and certainly not helpless, but significantly dulled. We are recovering from combat, foreign alcohol, poor sleep, and the sudden psychological transition from absolute readiness to withdrawal. If anything unexpected happens on the road today, we desperately need someone absurdly powerful remaining with the main command group.”

Shikaku took a sip of his bitter tea, his gaze shifting toward the front of the camp. ”Furthermore, Haku fought ōnoki yesterday. He may look pristine, but he should not be assumed fully recovered by any ordinary standards.”

Alaric shook his head gently. ”Haku’s recovery is not something you should measure by ordinary standards.”

Shikaku raised an identical, highly skeptical brow, instantly recognizing that the anomaly was deliberately withholding critical information.

”Troublesome,” Shikaku sighed, swirling the dregs of his tea. ”That sounded informative without actually informing me of anything.”

Alaric offered a brilliant, unapologetic smile. ”I have a talent.”

”Regardless,” Shikaku countered smoothly, ”it is the Hokage’s explicit order. Tsunade-sama wants you anchored with the main group.”

Alaric mirrored the strategist’s raised brow, then simply nodded his head. He was a Konoha shinobi, after all, and while flying ahead was highly convenient, it was not strictly essential.

He stepped around Shikaku, approaching Tsunade as she finished verifying a supply manifest.

”So I’m essentially being used as a mobile fortress today,” Alaric noted, crossing his arms.

Tsunade did not look up from her clipboard. ”Yes.”

She didn’t offer a single syllable of apology. She signed her name with a sharp flick of her wrist, handing the ledger to a passing runner, before turning her amber eyes toward him. ”And if you truly wanted this army to be fully functional and rapid this morning, you should not have challenged an encampment of stressed shinobi to finish enough high-proof liquor to drown a marine battalion.”

”They rose to the challenge admirably,” Alaric defended mildly, completely unrepentant.

Tsunade glared at him, pressing two fingers hard against her throbbing temples. ”Half my medical staff are threatening to declare themselves patients.”

Despite the banter, Tsunade’s underlying reasoning was dead serious. They were moving an entire, cumbersome army, not an agile four-man strike team. Kusagakure was a long march away, and until every single Konoha shinobi was safely secured behind allied walls, she was treating this as a volatile military withdrawal.

A few minutes later…

The marching formations were struck quickly.

Haku was assigned to the first wave, traveling with the forward vanguard. His calm, unbothered presence gave the front guard a quiet confidence, and alongside the fast scouts and sensory shinobi, they would clear the route toward Kusagakure. The main command group… comprising Tsunade, Shikaku, Alaric, the senior Jonin commanders, and the critical intelligence documents… formed the strategic heart of the convoy. The rear support group, tasked with protecting the medics, cooks, supply carts, and slower wounded, was anchored heavily by Asuma Sarutobi and one of Alaric’s silent, watchful Wood Clones.

The departure from the war camp was profoundly bittersweet.

The fires were buried under layers of dirt. The trash was cleared, the medical tents were folded away, and the memorial scrolls bearing the names of the fallen were sealed with meticulous, reverent care. The celebration of survival was officially over. Now, they were soldiers again.

As the first groups began to file out into the dense, rolling plains of the Grass Country, Haku paused near the command tent.

Alaric looked down at his student, sharing a brief, quiet look of mutual understanding.

”Try not to let anyone praise you to death before we reach Kusagakure,” Alaric advised dryly.

”I will remain vigilant,” Haku replied smoothly.

Just then, a chunin in Haku’s assigned group let out a miserable, echoing groan, swaying dangerously on his feet. Without missing a beat, Haku stepped forward, politely adjusting the man’s heavy pack and helping him stabilize his balance before leading the vanguard out into the wilderness.

With that, the march began.

The route through the Land of Grass was not kind to the weary. The path wound through towering, waist-high grass, uneven muddy trails, and treacherous, humid forest paths. Because they were moving as a unified army burdened by support personnel and hangovers, the pace was highly controlled… far from the elite, tree-leaping sprint of a standard shinobi squad.

Periodic pauses were strictly enforced. If a wounded soldier or an exhausted medic needed a breather, the nearby formation halted seamlessly, ensuring no one became isolated in the wilderness.

The hours dragged on, filled with the quiet, miserable banter of soldiers paying the toll for their victory.

”I swear on the Will of Fire,” a pale chunin groaned as they navigated a low hill, ”I will never, ever drink again.”

”You literally said the exact same thing after the last autumn festival,” his teammate grunted, trudging beside him.

A third shinobi, rubbing his eyes against the midday sun, leaned over. ”Does... does anyone actually remember who was singing near the medic tents?”

Nobody answered, which seemed to grimly confirm everyone’s worst fears.

Further back in the column, a medic-nin adjusted her pack, glaring at the uneven dirt path. ”The greatest injury currently afflicting this entire army is self-inflicted stupidity. Alaric’s foreign liquor should be formally classified as an S-rank forbidden weapon.”

Tsunade, who was walking just a few paces ahead in the command group, didn’t even slow her stride or turn her head.

”Agreed!” Tsunade said loudly.

Walking beside her, Alaric let out an amused huff, protesting mildly. ”The morale was successfully restored. You can’t argue with results.”

”Morale now has a migraine,” Tsunade shot back flatly. ”Do not hide behind technicalities.”

Falling back slightly from the Hokage’s wrath, Alaric matched his pace with Shikaku. The master strategist walked with his hands tucked into his pockets, his posture slouched.

”So,” Shikaku murmured quietly, ensuring his voice didn’t carry beyond the anomaly. ”Did anyone appear at the battlefield after the camp went to sleep?”

Alaric’s faint smile vanished, his blue eyes scanning the distant, surrounding treelines with cold, predatory calculation.

”No obvious Obito,” Alaric reported, his voice dropping into a serious, guarded register. ”No spatial ripple of Kamui. No masked idiot standing dramatically in the trees. And as for his master spy... there was absolutely nothing I could pin down in the earth.”

Shikaku grimaced, the lines around his eyes deepening. He was far too intelligent to take comfort in absence; he understood intimately that ”nothing” absolutely did not mean ”safe.”

”If Madara is not already moving,” Alaric added quietly, confirming the strategist’s worst fears, ”he will be soon enough. Obito has the Rinnegan now, and that changes the entire board.”

Shikaku let out a long, deeply aggrieved sigh. ”The paperwork for a normal, clean victory already sounded troublesome enough before you decided to add actual ghosts from history into the ledger.”

To cope with the mounting administrative dread and his lingering exhaustion, Shikaku adopted a bizarre travel method. He continued walking perfectly in step with the command group, but his eyes were half-closed, his head nodding slightly as if he were entirely asleep on his feet.

A few minutes later, an anxious, junior commander jogged up to the group, looking at the topographical map in his hands. Expecting to wake the strategist, he asked a highly complex question regarding the flank spacing needed to navigate an upcoming, narrow ravine.

Without opening his eyes, without even breaking his steady stride, Shikaku answered the tactical question perfectly. He gave a brief, flawless explanation regarding the terrain compression and the required squad dispersal, then immediately resumed looking profoundly asleep.

Alaric watched the exchange, a look of profound, genuine amusement crossing his face. The Nara intellect was truly a terrifying thing.

The march was not entirely without incident, though thankfully, none of it was hostile.

During a crossing over a wide, fast-flowing stream, a particularly hungover shinobi misjudged the slick moss on a stepping stone. His foot slipped, and he pitched wildly forward, tumbling toward the rushing water.

Before he could hit the surface, Haku appeared smoothly from the vanguard line. The Ice Demon caught the man firmly by the back of his tactical vest, effortlessly stabilizing his weight and pulling him back onto solid ground.

”Are you alright?” Haku asked politely, releasing his grip.

The shinobi, utterly mortified to have been saved from a puddle by the army’s most lethal operative, bowed his head furiously. ”Thank you, Yuki-san. I’m fine.”

”You should likely avoid dueling rivers until you are properly hydrated,” Haku advised calmly, before turning back to the front.

Further back in the rear guard, the toll of the march hit a struggling chunin particularly hard. Traveling through the lower branches of the trees to maintain the perimeter, the chunin suddenly turned a sickly shade of green. He leaned entirely too far over the branch, attempting to vomit into the bushes below, and lost his balance completely.

He plummeted toward the earth, but a hand shot out from the foliage, catching him roughly by the collar of his jacket and leaving him dangling mid-air.

One of Alaric’s Wood Clones, looking completely, utterly unimpressed, hauled the miserable chunin back onto the sturdy branch.

”Gravity remains undefeated against the drunk,” the Wood Clone stated mechanically. ”Stay on your toes man.”

The chunin could only groan in misery.

Kusagakure - Land of Grass - Elemental Nations

By late afternoon, the shadows began to stretch long and thin across the plains, and the towering, fortified wooden gates of Kusagakure finally appeared on the horizon.

The Hidden Grass Village reacted with understandable, profound nervousness as the Konoha army approached. Even exhausted, hungover, and limping, the sheer volume of the Leaf forces that had just crushed Iwagakure was a deeply intimidating sight. However, they were cooperative, recognizing the political necessity of offering sanctuary to their victors.

Tsunade handled the diplomatic entry with crisp, absolute professionalism. Because Alaric had been barred from flying ahead to secure the logistics, the Konoha administrative teams had to work directly with Kusagakure officials in real-time, frantically negotiating for inns, barracks, empty warehouses, temporary medical rest areas, and secure spaces for the command documents.

Observing the logistical bottleneck forming at the gates, Alaric sighed. He casually reached into his black Vanguard uniform, preparing to bypass the entire bureaucratic headache.

Shikaku’s hand shot out like a viper, clamping an iron grip around Alaric’s wrist.

”No,” Shikaku said flatly.

Alaric blinked, looking down at the strategist’s hand. ”You do not even know what I was about to do.”

”You were about to solve a logistical problem by causing a catastrophic economic one,” Shikaku replied without missing a beat, his dark eyes fixed firmly on the anomaly. ”We are not buying the entire village.”

’…What makes you think I can buy an entire village?’ Alaric looked mildly, genuinely offended by the accusation, but he let out a defeated huff and lowered his hand, allowing Shikaku and Tsunade to handle the negotiations properly.

As the sun finally dipped below the horizon, casting a warm, golden twilight over Kusagakure, the Konoha army began to filter into their designated sanctuaries.

The transformation was palpable. They were no longer soldiers marching relentlessly toward an active battlefield. They were no longer sitting in the bloody mud of a war camp. They were just tired, aching men and women carrying the heavy mixture of victory, grief, and hangovers, finally feeling the first, fragile sense that they might actually be going home.

Haku remained alert near the front gates, effortlessly helping the vanguard groups settle into their assigned barracks despite being fully healed. In the rear, Asuma ensured that the support groups found their quarters, personally making sure that the exhausted medics and cooks actually laid down to rest. Tsunade stood in the center of the village square, overseeing the sprawling arrangements until she was absolutely satisfied that not a single one of her shinobi was being neglected.

And Shikaku Nara, finding a quiet corner in a rented inn, began mentally preparing for the mountainous avalanche of paperwork, even as he desperately tried not to.

By the time the gates of Kusagakure closed securely behind them, the army that had shattered Iwagakure’s campaign no longer looked like a terrifying conquering force, but like what it truly was beneath the armor and the legend: tired men and women carrying victory and grief toward the first real bed they had seen in days.

And as Konoha settled into Kusagakure beneath the fading light, soft laughter and exhausted groans followed them through the quiet streets, while Alaric watched the deep shadows between the buildings with the quiet, unshakable certainty that rest had been earned, but safety had not.
