Kenway Keep - Philadelphia - Pennsylvania - Holy Commonwealth of Pennmere

The amber light of early dawn pierced the heavy, velvet curtains of the master study, casting long, geometric shadows across the polished mahogany floorboards. Outside, the city of Philadelphia was still swathed in a thick, rolling blanket of morning fog, the great industrial engines and busy markets of the Commonwealth only just beginning to stir from their slumber.

Within the absolute, fortified silence of the Kenway Keep, Kassandra was already awake, operating with the tireless, immortal discipline that had defined her existence for millennia.

She sat behind the massive expanse of Alaric’s desk, bathed in the warm, flickering glow of a single oil lamp like how she want it. Due to Alaric’s Fuinjutsu, the Keep had light and light switches, Kassandra preferred old school. 𝑓𝑟ℯℴ𝓂

A steaming cup of Celestial Tea rested near her elbow, untouched, as her amber eyes meticulously scanned through a towering stack of intelligence reports. During Alaric’s departure to the other world, the mantle of Vanguard leadership had naturally fallen upon her shoulders, and she wore the responsibility with effortless grace.

She unrolled a heavy parchment sealed with the distinctive, dark green wax of the frontier division. It was a comprehensive field report detailing the integration efforts in the still new conquered Iroquois territories.

According to the Vanguard operatives stationed along the borders, the initial assimilation had been fraught with predictable friction. The various tribesmen and women, fiercely proud and rightfully skeptical of their conquerors, had fiercely resisted the Pennmerian occupation at first. However, the cultural resistance had begun to violently crumble against the overwhelming, undeniable superiority of the Kenway logistical machine.

The moment Vanguard supply rolled into the indigenous settlements, distributing the impossibly delicious, nutritionally dense food sourced directly from the Celestial farms, the hostility began to wane. Paired with the introduction of advanced, clean-water infrastructure and dramatically improved living conditions, the Iroquois populace had slowly, tentatively begun to adapt to Pennmere’s way of life. The report noted that while a few aggressive, staunch traditionalists had attempted to incite armed rebellions, they had been swiftly, perfectly detained by Vanguard shadows without a single drop of lethal bloodshed.

Kassandra nodded her head in quiet approval, setting the border report aside. It was a bloodless conquest secured entirely through the stomach and the promise of a better tomorrow.

She reached for the final scroll in the stack, a specialized, covert intelligence brief compiled by a random Vanguard operative whose sole duty was to linger invisibly in the taverns and barracks of the regular Pennmerian army.

As she read the contents, a slender, dark brow rose toward her hairline.

The operative reported a troubling, albeit entirely human, undercurrent of resentment brewing among the enlisted soldiers of the Commonwealth. While drinking heavily in the shadows, several infantrymen had been caught talking absolute shit against the Vanguard organization. The soldiers complained bitterly that His Majesty, William Penn Sr., was granting the shadow operatives far too much political importance and unearned glory. They loudly proclaimed that the Vanguard was nothing more than a heavily over-magnified myth.

Furthermore, the disgruntled infantry dismissed the legendary figures within the organization as mere campfire stories mixed with deliberate royal propaganda to inflate their reputation. They scoffed at the terrifying tales of ”Il Corvo d’Ombra,” Reuben’s infamous title across the Mediterranean, and openly mocked the moniker ”Giant Ebony,” the new, reverent title Thulani had acquired after single-handedly breaking the Iroquois lines during the recent occupation. To the regular army, Vanguard was just a fairy tale designed to make the grunts feel small.

Kassandra stared at the ink for a long moment, the absurdity of mortal arrogance washing over her.

She leaned back in the plush leather chair, a low, genuinely amused chuckle vibrating in her chest.

”Knock knock!”

The voice drifted in from the exterior balcony, perfectly pitched to cut through the quiet isolation of the study.

Kassandra halted her laughter, turning her head slightly to look at the heavy glass doors leading outside. There were undoubtedly multiple people capable of scaling the sheer, vertical rock face of the mountain fortress... Reuben, Thulani, and essentially any fully-trained Vanguard soldier could bypass the physical elevation with relative ease. However, the lazy, unapologetically arrogant timbre of that specific voice was singular in the multiverse. She knew that voice far too well.

The glass doors clicked and swung open, letting a brief gust of foggy, chilled air sweep into the warm room.

Kassandra couldn’t help the brilliant, radiant smile that broke across her face as she saw him step over the threshold. However, as her amber eyes swept over his towering frame, her brow furrowed in sheer, unadulterated confusion.

Alaric Jonathan Kenway was not wearing his iconic, immaculately tailored crimson coat that usually draped over his broad shoulders like a king’s mantle. Instead, he was clad in a strange, utilitarian ensemble: a padded, olive-green sleeveless flak jacket worn tightly over a fitted, black long-sleeve shirt and dark, practical pants. Only his heavy, polished black combat boots remained the same.

”Agápi mou!” Kassandra didn’t let the bizarre wardrobe change delay her. She pushed her chair back, standing up and immediately crossing the room to throw her arms around her lover’s waist, burying her face into the solid warmth of his chest.

”Hey, you,” Alaric smiled, his large hands coming up to wrap securely around her back. He buried his face in her dark hair, inhaling the faint, comforting scent of lavender and ancient bronze that was so uniquely Kassandra. ”I missed you.”

”Me too,” Kassandra murmured against his shirt, squeezing him tightly before leaning back. ”But you came back early this time.”

Breaking the embrace, she took a half-step back, planting her hands on her hips as she looked the towering blonde up and down, tilting her head critically. ”And what in the world is with the outfit?”

Alaric’s brow rose before a low, rumbling chuckle escaped his lips. He reached up, casually scratching the back of his head as he looked down at the foreign military vest.

”Ah, this?” Alaric smirked, shrugging his broad shoulders. ”I sparred with someone really, really strong in the other world. It got to the point where the atmospheric pressure and the sheer volume of jutsu flying around completely shredded all of our upper wear. I had to borrow this from the village’s standard armory just to maintain some decency.”

”...What!?” Kassandra’s amber eyes widened to impossible proportions, her breath hitching in her throat. She stared at him, genuinely horrified by the implications of a statement she never thought she would hear. ”There is actually someone over there as strong as you!?”

Alaric hummed a thoughtful note, looking up at the ceiling for a brief second before shaking his head decisively.

”Like I told you before, Kass, there are definitely stronger, god-like beings resting in the shadows of the other world,” Alaric clarified, his tone dropping its playful edge to offer a reassuring honesty. ”But the man I sparred with wasn’t really as strong as me. In fact, I actively allowed my clothes to be torn simply because of my own excitement from the fight. I heavily limited my physical output and my chakra scale since it was merely a spar to test his revived vessel. I didn’t use any lethal jutsu or reality-bending absolute attacks... otherwise, the fight would’ve just ended instantly, and that’s no fun.”

Kassandra stared at him, dissecting the casual arrogance in his eyes, before she finally let out a long, shuddering sigh of profound relief, the tension draining from her spine.

Alaric just grinned, reaching out with one large hand to affectionately pinch both of her cheeks, squishing her face together before leaning down to plant a soft, lingering peck on her lips.

”What...” Alaric murmured against her mouth, his blue eyes dancing with amusement. ”You actually think someone over there could kill me?”

Kassandra pulled back, swatting his hand away with a playful pout as she rubbed her cheeks. ”Of course I’m worried, you idiot. We have a son to raise, after all. I don’t want Hunter growing up without a father just because you wanted to play with lightning and fire.”

Alaric stepped closer, slipping his arms loosely around her waist, a teasing glint returning to his gaze. ”Oh? Is that just the reason? You only care because of baby Hunter?”

Kassandra didn’t back down. She looked up, locking her ancient, golden eyes straight into his vibrant blue ones, a slow, fiercely devoted smirk curving her lips. ”Don’t be stupid. Of course the primary reason is that I love you.”

Alaric actually blinked, caught entirely off guard by the blunt, unapologetic sincerity of the confession. A sudden, unfamiliar flutter of warmth erupted in his stomach, a rare butterfly fluttering against the iron cage of his emotional detachment. He couldn’t help the soft, boyish giggle that vibrated in his chest.

However, recognizing that she had successfully flustered the anomaly, Kassandra expertly diverted his attention, turning her head and pointing a finger toward the chaotic stack of scrolls resting on the mahogany desk.

”Oh, yeah,” Alaric noted, seamlessly shaking off the romantic daze as his business acumen flared back to life. He looked over her shoulder at the parchment. ”How is Vanguard holding up in my absence? Any news of anything I need to fix?”

Kassandra nodded her head, slipping out of his embrace to walk back toward the desk.

”Overall, it was okay,” she reported, adopting the crisp, professional cadence of a general. ”It wasn’t the absolute best week, but it was highly manageable. The soldiers we stationed across all the active states of Pennmere were practically religious with their reports. Any hidden, subversive organizations attempting to take root were quietly dismantled in the night, and all types of smugglers trying to breach the ports were aggressively sent to prison to serve their sentences. Domestic tranquility is secure.”

She picked up a specific, red-waxed scroll, her expression turning uncharacteristically grim.

”However, Pennmere’s geopolitical situation is becoming quite uncertain,” Kassandra warned, handing the scroll to Alaric. ”When Reuben was making his patrol rounds toward Barbados to facilitate Edward’s pirate negotiations, heavily armed French naval ships disguised themselves to look like stateless pirates and directly attacked The Wraithling. Furthermore, just an hour ago, I received a swift-bird report from Thulani. Liberty’s Wrath intercepted and destroyed a similar fleet of ’pirate’ ships off the southern coast... but upon inspecting the wreckage, they confirmed the vessels were actually Spanish.”

Alaric took the scroll, his blue eyes narrowing into dangerous, calculated slits as the international puzzle pieces snapped violently together.

”So...” Alaric murmured, his voice dropping into a cold, terrifyingly calm register. ”It’s finally happening.”

”...So you did expect this from happening,” Kassandra noted, raising a single brow as she approached the desk, crossing her arms tightly over her chest and leaning back against the heavy wood. ”The French and the Spaniards actively coordinating false-flag operations against our fleets... that’s two massive, global empires aligning against us.”

Alaric met her intense gaze, giving a slow, definitive nod of his head. He tossed the scroll onto the desk, completely unbothered by the threat of global warfare.

”It was inevitably bound to happen, Kass,” Alaric explained smoothly, stepping closer to her. ”Expansionist kingdoms like France and Spain simply do not tolerate another kingdom outgrowing them in their own backyard. They want to be the undisputed best; that is the entire foundational logic of why they colonize foreign lands in the first place. Since the Holy Commonwealth of Pennmere is rapidly becoming the central hub of the global economy, it means that a rogue kingdom massively outgrew them right under their arrogant, powdered noses.”

He reached out, tracing the edge of the desk with a calloused finger. ”France and Spain have most likely reinforced their fragile European peace treaties by establishing one, unifying common enemy. And that enemy is Pennmere. Because to them, our kingdom isn’t just a political rival... it is a literal, unguarded gold bar, just waiting to be violently owned.”

Kassandra nodded her head in slow agreement, the geopolitical reality settling over her. ”Which means that whatever diplomatic alliances and treaties William Penn established with them in the early days were completely useless in the end.”

”Not entirely,” Alaric shook his head, disagreeing with the absolute assessment. ”It wasn’t all useless. Pennmere did secure a vital measure of diplomatic protection from the two surrounding colonial superpowers during its fragile, baby phase. It gave us the quiet years we needed to build the foundation. But right now? Pennmere doesn’t need their protection anymore.”

Alaric gestured broadly toward the window, where the sun was finally burning away the morning fog to reveal the sprawling, wealthy metropolis below.

”With the Celestial Company completely monopolizing trade, and our agricultural sectors utilizing soil incapable of ever experiencing famine, Pennmere literally has it all,” Alaric listed off, his voice swelling with the undeniable pride of an architect admiring his masterpiece. ”We established a banking system that allows its people to use Celestial Cards for cashless transactions, promoting ultimate convenience. We maintain incredibly low tax rates backed by the world’s most flawless anti-fraud system. We offer dirt-cheap, highly nutritious food while maintaining a population with the healthiest lifestyle on the planet. There is zero homeless population. Pennmere is the absolute, unadulterated paradise that every rotting kingdom in Europe would desperately want to conquer.”

He turned back to Kassandra, a sharp, incredibly dark smirk curving his lips as his blue eyes flashed with predatory anticipation.

”But the real question is...” Alaric posed softly, his voice a lethal whisper. ”...can they actually conquer Pennmere?”

Kassandra stared at the towering anomaly for a long moment, feeling the sheer, suffocating gravity of his confidence, before a low, rich chuckle escaped her lips. She shook her head in profound amusement, knowing full well that any armada foolish enough to sail against this man was sailing into an open grave.

She reached behind her, picking up the final, slightly crumpled intelligence report from the desk, and held it out to him.

”Perhaps they cannot,” Kassandra agreed, her smirk mirroring his own. ”But as for our own internal stability... Vanguard might need to act soon to permanently shut some people’s mouths. We need to set the record straight for the regular army that Vanguard is, and always will be, the ultimate, untouchable foundation that Pennmere rests upon.”

Alaric took the report, his brows furrowing as he quickly skimmed through the complaints of the enlisted soldiers mocking Reuben and Thulani’s legendary status.

”So the absolute slaughter of the Iroquois war wasn’t enough to humble them...” Alaric mused, a soft, dangerous laugh vibrating in his chest as he tossed the paper aside.

He looked up at Kassandra, nodding his head slowly as a brilliant, terrifyingly ambitious smile broke across his face.

”Then... we’ll simply turn this coming continental war into our personal stage,” Alaric declared, his voice ringing with absolute, tyrannical authority. ”Not just to silence a few loose-lipped, arrogant soldiers... but to show the entire, watching world just how utterly terrifying a ’small’ organization like Vanguard can truly be.”

Kassandra nodded her head, her golden eyes blazing with the fierce, answering fire of a Spartan warrior.

A slow, deeply seductive smile touched her lips. She reached up, her deft fingers finding the top lace of her pristine, white linen dress. With a deliberate, agonizingly slow motion, she loosened the ties, allowing the heavy fabric to slip smoothly off her shoulders. The dress slid down her athletic, perfectly sculpted body, pooling in a ring of white fabric at her feet, leaving her entirely, breathtakingly bare in the morning light.

”I know you won’t be here for long, considering you have a student and a second life waiting for you in the other world...” Kassandra whispered, her voice dropping into a husky, demanding purr as she stepped into his personal space, her bare chest brushing against the rough fabric of his flak jacket. ”...so how about you give me some love?”

Alaric could only smile perversely, his breath catching in his throat as his gaze swept hungrily over the absolute perfection of the immortal misthios.

Without breaking eye contact, he raised his right hand, hovering it an inch in the air. A concentrated, invisible pulse of dense chakra shot across the room, violently snapping the heavy brass locks of the balcony doors and the main study entrance shut with a resounding, simultaneous clack.

He wrapped his large hands firmly around her bare waist, pulling her flush against him.

”You don’t need to ask twice.”
