Chapter 394: Chapter 393: The Ice Demon and the Will of Stone II

Previously

”Do not mistake age for blindness, boy,” Ōnoki called down, his voice echoing with the heavy, unyielding pride of Iwagakure. ”I have watched men far faster than you die on the battlefield because they foolishly believed that speed was the exact same thing as wisdom.”

Now

Haku slowly straightened his posture, lowering his blade respectfully. The pain in his shoulder throbbed, but his polite, serene demeanor did not break.

”I would never make that mistake, Tsuchikage-sama,” Haku replied, his voice carrying genuine, absolute respect. ’But wasn’t it because of Minato-sama’s speed that he lost the previous war?’

Realizing he could not simply outmaneuver the Kage forever while the threat of Dust Release lingered, Haku fundamentally altered his strategy. He needed to control Ōnoki’s firing windows and force the hovering old man into the lethal chaos of close-quarters combat.

Haku’s hands blurred through a one-handed seal sequence.

He did not erect a single, localized dome. He began forming a sprawling, battlefield-wide version of his Demonic Mirroring Ice Crystals.

Scattered, isolated mirrors erupted from the ruined earth. A massive reflective pane formed behind a broken rampart; another hovered high in the air behind Ōnoki for a mere two seconds before dissolving; several grew like jagged teeth amidst the frozen mud; and some lay completely flat against the ground like puddles of solid glass.

Haku vanished into the network.

He became a terrifying, omnipresent phantom. He appeared from a low mirror, slashing upward at Ōnoki’s legs, only to vanish into an ice puddle and instantly rebound off a floating plate above the Kage’s head, firing a volley of Ice Senbon from a third, impossible angle.

Ōnoki adapted with brutal efficiency. He utilized heavy stone powder, coating the reflective surfaces of the ice, before applying sudden, devastating bursts of the Added-Weight Rock Technique to the dust itself. The mirrors groaned and shattered violently under the sudden, artificial mass, bursting into glittering clouds of diamond dust.

But Haku was relentless.

He closed the distance, utilizing Water Infusion on his Kusanagi to make the blade flow with erratic, flexible arcs, striking upward toward Ōnoki’s wrists to physically prevent the Kage from forming the hand seals required for Particle Style. Ōnoki rotated mid-air using his lightening technique, avoiding a decapitating slash by inches. Haku landed on a floating ice step, thrusting the sword toward Ōnoki’s ribs. The Tsuchikage rapidly erected a condensed stone shell around his flank; Haku immediately shifted to Wind Infusion, the shrieking blade slicing cleanly through the outer layer of rock, but failing to bite deeply enough to kill.

Reversing his grip, Haku targeted the back of Ōnoki’s knee, attempting to disrupt his aerodynamic balance. Ōnoki countered by dropping an ultra-dense boulder directly between them, forcing Haku to cleave through the stone to maintain his momentum.

Instead of traditional projectiles, Haku utilized his Ice Senbon as surgical distractions. Needles rained toward Ōnoki’s fingers to interrupt his chakra molding, struck the edges of his robes to temporarily pin the heavy fabric to the stone barriers, and pierced the weak points in his earth armor, freezing the joints.

Despite his age, Ōnoki fought with brilliant, economical body movement. He used gravity as his taijutsu, dropping suddenly, shifting his weight, and punishing Haku’s overextensions by momentarily increasing the gravity on Haku’s sword arm for a split second, forcing the boy’s strikes to falter.

But in a dizzying exchange of parries and flight, Haku finally found his opening.

Slipping past a descending stone pillar, Haku dragged the edge of his Kusanagi in a shallow, glancing cut across Ōnoki’s exposed side. The moment the steel parted skin, Haku forcefully channeled his chakra through the wound.

”Ice Release: Ice Fang.”

Deep, jagged frost crystals bloomed violently from the laceration, crawling aggressively over Ōnoki’s robes and attempting to encase the Kage’s entire ribcage in a paralyzing coffin of absolute zero ice.

Ōnoki roared in pain and fury. Reacting with veteran brutality, he layered his skin in dense Earth Release armor, forcibly cracking the forming ice from the outside. In the same breath, he channeled a massive pulse of Added-Weight Rock onto a thick stone platform hovering directly above Haku.

The platform slammed downward with inescapable force.

Haku couldn’t fully evade. The stone clipped him heavily, sending his body crashing violently through a frozen earth wall. The sickening sound of cracking ribs echoed as Haku skidded through the frozen mud, a sharp gasp tearing from his throat.

He tasted copper. Blood dripped slowly from his chin, staining the pristine white collar of his undershirt. He pushed himself up, his breathing momentarily ragged as the Ashura’s Crest pulsed hotly on his back, aggressively funneling healing chakra to his fractured chest. He was incredibly powerful, yes, but he was not untouchable.

Hovering above, Ōnoki did not give the boy a second to recover. He raised multiple, colossal boulders from the ruins of the camp, compressing them until they were as dense as iron, and sent them raining down like a devastating meteor shower.

Haku knew his escape angles were cut off. He dropped to one knee, forming a seal.

”Ice Release: Ice Rock Dome of Magnificent Nothingness.”

A thick, highly transparent dome of reinforced ice materialized around him just as the meteors struck. The boulders crashed into the barrier with deafening force, explosive tags hidden within the rock detonating against the surface. Stone fragments hammered the ice like a storm, fracturing the outer layers, but the dome held, glowing faintly with Haku’s layered chakra control.

From the safety of the cracking sanctuary, Haku retaliated.

”Ice Release: Ice Ball.”

A massive, incredibly dense sphere of ice launched vertically from the dome, smashing through the remaining falling boulders and forcing Ōnoki to rapidly ascend higher into the sky. The Tsuchikage destroyed the ice sphere with an earth spear, but the resulting high-altitude collision sent a massive shockwave across the battlefield, blasting smoke outward and flattening several abandoned tents.

Haku dropped the dome, launching a secondary assault.

”Water Style: Shark Bomb — Ice Infusion.”

A shark-shaped mass of water erupted from the muddy earth, and as it soared toward the sky, its body violently crystallized, transforming into a jagged, frozen predator. Ōnoki dodged the primary bite, shattering the tail with a stone fist, but the resulting fragments scattered across the air, providing Haku with a fresh layer of airborne mirrors and footholds.

Realizing that standard attrition was failing against the Kage’s adaptability, Haku decided to escalate the environmental pressure.

He gathered the ambient moisture, forming an ethereal handle of swirling, frozen vapor in his grasp, while an absolutely colossal hammerhead of solid ice... as large as a Tailed Beast’s skull... condensed high above the battlefield.

Haku didn’t swing it like a brute. He utilized Zero Friction and a specifically angled mirror to violently redirect the massive weapon’s momentum, bringing the Ice Hammer crashing down toward Ōnoki’s hovering position.

Ōnoki intercepted the strike by manifesting a massive, ultra-dense stone golem.

The impact was cataclysmic.

The sheer force of the collision collapsed a massive section of the camp. The frozen mud exploded upward in a circular shockwave that shattered barricades and sent both the Konoha and Iwa armies flinching backward, miles away. The resulting crater formed a smooth, deep basin of solid frost. Ōnoki survived by manipulating his weight at the last possible millisecond, but the attack proved unequivocally that the Ice Demon possessed large-scale, apocalyptic power.

Haku landed lightly on the frozen edge of the new crater. He took a slow, steady breath, the cold air filling his healing lungs. He realized that ordinary combat pressure was insufficient; if the fight remained on Ōnoki’s terms, the Dust Release would eventually find its mark.

He brought his hands together, forming a single, resolute seal.

”Ice Release: Winter’s Roar!”

The cold did not simply spread; it violently erupted.

A roaring, expanding wave of white-blue frost blasted outward from Haku’s core, swallowing the battlefield in a one-kilometer radius. The world froze.

The churning mud solidified into permafrost. The blood staining the earth crystallized into dark red veins. The burning, abandoned tents hissed and died instantly, encased in thick layers of rime. Broken weapons and shattered stone walls cracked loudly as the moisture trapped within them expanded and froze. The very breath of the distant shinobi turned into thick, visible clouds, and the Iwa forces positioned closest to the duel zone felt their joints stiffen agonizingly against the creeping absolute zero.

Konoha shinobi retreated even further, shivering violently as they realized Haku was no longer fighting a battle that ordinary soldiers could survive.

Ōnoki ascended higher to avoid the brunt of the flash-freeze, but even the Tsuchikage felt the biting frost crawling along the edges of his robes and biting into the wound on his side.

The ideological insult enraged him. He had just rallied his broken army with the unyielding Will of Stone, and now, this Konoha operative was literally freezing their resolve into stillness.

”You would dare to freeze the will of my village beneath your feet!?” Ōnoki accused, his voice booming with fury.

Haku lowered his hands, looking up at the hovering Kage. He answered calmly, his voice laced with a profound, weary sadness rather than cruelty.

”No, Tsuchikage-sama,” Haku replied softly. ”I am simply ending the war before more of your men have to die.”

Ōnoki’s eyes burned with offended pride. He saw Haku merely as Konoha’s polished, arrogant blade; Haku saw Ōnoki as a proud leader who would rather drag wounded men deeper into the slaughter than accept the reality of defeat.

Refusing to conserve his strength any longer, Ōnoki brought his hands together.

The light that formed between his palms was entirely different from the first. This Particle Style construct was massive, a blinding, terrifying geometric shape that promised to erase a massive swath of the frozen battlefield. The ambient light reflected off the ice below, and several of Haku’s scattered mirrors began to disintegrate before the technique was even fired.

Haku knew he could not block it.

He utilized absolutely everything he possessed. He launched himself through his remaining mirror field in a hyper-complex, desperate sequence. He appeared behind a shattered mirror low to the ground, burst violently upward with Zero Friction, fired a volley of fuinjutsu-etched Ice Senbon aimed directly at Ōnoki’s fingers, used a floating mirror to aggressively redirect his own trajectory, slid along an invisible ice plate in mid-air, and drew his wind-infused Kusanagi in a desperate slash across Ōnoki’s wrist.

The blade cut deep, disrupting the shape transformation for a single, decisive instant.

But Ōnoki, fueled by the indomitable Will of Stone, fired anyway.

The Dust Release beam carved a horrifying, apocalyptic white scar through the battlefield. It cleanly erased a massive line of frozen earth, shattered ramparts, abandoned weapons, stone walls, and empty space. There was no explosion; just the terrifying perfection of absolute absence. A massive portion of the war camp was simply gone.

Haku survived, but barely.

The concussive shock of his own desperate movement and the residual chakra pressure of the beam threw him violently across the sky. His body hit the frozen ground hard, bouncing several times before skidding to a halt. The entire left side of his teal kimono was ruined. His shoulder bled heavily, and for the very first time, his breathing was ragged and forced.

Ōnoki was equally battered. His wrist bled profusely from the sword strike, his side remained partially numb from the Ice Fang, and his ancient lungs heaved with exhaustion. But he was still standing, still flying, and still utterly terrifying.

Internally, Ōnoki finally acknowledged the truth. This was not merely a boy or a prodigy. This was a blade that Konoha had hidden in silk, sharp enough to cut a Kage. This boy’s speed reminded him of the a certain blonde that he despised.

Forcing himself up, Haku pushed the tempo to its absolute limit. He triggered the final purpose of his battlefield setup. The scattered Ice Rain needles, mirror fragments, and hidden fuinjutsu strokes etched into the frost began to hum, connecting into a temporary, localized sealing-interference field. It wasn’t strong enough to permanently seal the Kage, but it subtly interfered with Ōnoki’s flight trajectory and weight manipulation for critical fractions of a second.

Haku utilized the momentary lag to trap Ōnoki in his tempo.

He appeared below the Kage, then above him, then beside him. Blurs of teal and frost filled the air. His blade nearly reached Ōnoki’s throat. Frost crawled aggressively over the Tsuchikage’s wounded side. Several mirrors flashed simultaneously, and the frozen battlefield below reflected Haku’s moving image like a shattered, chaotic lake.

For a brief, agonizing period, Ōnoki was caught in the cage. He realized that if he remained within this middle-altitude battlefield, fighting within the boy’s meticulously prepared domain of angles, speed, and hidden seals, he might actually lose.

Ōnoki did the most intelligent thing a veteran could do.

He escaped upward.

It was not cowardice. It was a tactical correction. He abandoned the battlefield Haku had claimed, flying high, straight into the evening sky.

He rose high above the broken ramparts, the smoke, the remaining Ice Rain, and the reach of Haku’s highest ice steps.

Haku desperately tried to follow. He used Zero Friction to create consecutive ice footholds beneath his feet, launching himself upward again and again. For a moment, it looked as if the boy was literally climbing the sky itself. But the fundamental limitation of his technique became glaringly apparent.

Zero Friction was not true flight.

Haku needed surfaces. He needed angles to push off. He could launch himself upward, but each burst committed him to a specific, linear direction. He could not hover. He could not drift freely. He could not endlessly ascend with the boundless, unchained freedom that the Tsuchikage possessed.

As Haku fell back toward the earth, bound by gravity and vectors, Ōnoki continued to rise.

At that supreme height, Ōnoki completely regained the advantage. Haku could still threaten him if the Kage descended, but he could no longer dominate the sky the way he had dominated the frozen earth.

The watching armies understood the shift in power instantly. The Konoha shinobi felt a heavy dread settle in their stomachs as their champion’s reach failed, while the Iwa forces felt a desperate surge of hope; their Tsuchikage had found the one space where the Ice Demon could not touch him.

Hovering high above the devastation, wounded and breathing hard, Ōnoki raised his hands, his palms glowing with a final, desperate, and massive Particle Style construct. From this extreme altitude, Haku could not reach his hands to disrupt the seal in time. Ōnoki fully intended to erase the mirror field, the frozen terrain, and the very route Haku needed to climb, raining absolute destruction down upon the boy.

It was the brilliant, terrifying desperation of a Kage who had found the one battlefield his opponent could not own.

Ōnoki aligned his hands, preparing to fire.

But then, he stopped.

He sensed something behind him.

It wasn’t a flare of killing intent. It wasn’t the sudden, erratic spike of a normal chakra signature preparing an ambush. It wasn’t the atmospheric pressure of an incoming, high-level jutsu.

It was simply... presence.

A silent, impossible, suffocating weight existing directly behind his back in the empty sky.

Ōnoki’s blood turned entirely to ice. The hairs on the back of his aged neck stood on end. Slowly, almost unwillingly, driven by a primal terror he hadn’t felt in decades, he turned his head over his shoulder.

Standing casually in the empty, high-altitude sky directly behind him was Alaric Jonathan Kenway.

Alaric was floating as if the laws of gravity held absolutely no authority over his existence. He wore the black-gold attire that William Penn gifted him, the small tails fluttering gently in the cold wind. One hand was tucked casually into his pocket, while the other held a cigar loosely between two fingers. Thick, grey smoke curled lazily from his lips, vanishing into the high-altitude currents. His expression was calm, serene, and almost polite, looking exactly as if he had accidentally interrupted a private, intimate conversation.

The horrifying realization crashed down upon Ōnoki like a physical blow. Alaric had not just arrived. The blonde anomaly had been standing there... floating in the sky... the entire time.

He had been watching. Close enough to snap Ōnoki’s neck or sever his spine whenever he pleased.

Every single tactical calculation Ōnoki had made... every judgment about distance, safe altitude, and Haku’s vertical limitations... meant absolutely nothing. He was never truly safe. He had merely escaped Haku’s reach, only to fly directly into Alaric’s domain.

He wasn’t fighting Haku because Alaric couldn’t reach him; he was fighting Haku because Alaric allowed it.

Alaric took a slow, savoring drag from his cigar. The ember glowed a fierce, cherry red in the twilight. He exhaled calmly, tilted his head slightly to the side, and offered a soft, casually awkward smile.

”Well...” Alaric murmured, his voice carrying clearly over the wind. ”...this is awkward.”
