The Land of Grass - The Ruined Iwagakure Encampment

The battlefield had not yet accepted that it was dead.

Hours after the final, thunderous echoes of combat had faded, the ruined Iwagakure war camp remained locked in a haunting, crystalline stasis. Haku’s Winter’s Roar had effectively embalmed the devastation, freezing the churning mud into jagged, treacherous permafrost. The shattered remnants of earthen ramparts stood like broken, rotting teeth against the darkening sky, while tens of thousands of translucent ice needles still protruded rigidly from abandoned weapons, cracked stone pillars, and the frozen, stiffening corpses of the fallen.

Most unsettling of all were the unnatural, flawlessly smooth white scars carved deeply into the earth and the distant cliff faces… places where ōnoki’s Dust Release had simply commanded matter to cease existing, leaving behind a terrifying, polished absence. It was a macabre monument to the sheer, apocalyptic scale of Kage-level warfare.

And floating high above it all, suspended in the frigid night air like a solitary, black-uniformed phantom, Alaric Jonathan Kenway watched.

He wasn’t hovering in the bitter cold because he possessed any lingering, poetic appreciation for the aesthetics of destruction. He was waiting. His piercing blue eyes, heavily narrowed against the wind, meticulously swept the dark, ruined expanse, while his Mind’s Eye of the Kagura blanketed the entire valley in an invisible, suffocating sensory net.

He was hunting for a ghost, a plant, or a masked idiot.

The geopolitical board had just violently reset itself. Alaric had already marched into Amegakure, systematically dismantling the false god Pein, only for Obito Uchiha to forcefully extract Nagato’s Rinnegan and retreat into the spatial folds of Kamui. That single, desperate act of theft had accelerated the timeline toward the abyss. The Rinnegan possessed the undeniable, absolute power to resurrect the dead. Because Obito’s entire operation was inextricably tethered to the will, the name, and the grand design of Madara Uchiha, the brutal arithmetic was clear: Madara might already be drawing breath, or if he wasn’t, his revival was terrifyingly imminent, even if Obito didn’t plan to revive him.

Furthermore, the duel between Haku and ōnoki had laid bare the terrifying depths of the Ice Demon’s strength, and the subsequent, humiliating withdrawal of Iwagakure had fundamentally altered the balance of the Five Great Nations. If Obito, or the subterranean parasite known as Zetsu, wished to gather critical intelligence on Konoha’s true capabilities, this frozen graveyard was the premier place to inspect.

So, Alaric waited.

He smoked his cigar in complete silence, the glowing cherry the only point of warmth in the sky, maintaining his absolute vigilance for hours.

No spiraling ripple of Kamui distorted the moonlight.

No masked figure materialized among the frost-bitten trees.

No distinct, dual-toned plant creature rose from the blood-soaked soil to observe the wreckage.

No suspicious, parasitic chakra signature lingered anywhere it shouldn’t.

Alaric let out a slow, deeply irritated sigh. He acknowledged, with a begrudging measure of professional respect, that Zetsu was a remarkably difficult entity to pin down. For all Alaric knew, the creature might have already seeped through the ancient root systems, mathematically analyzed the Dust Release scars, and vanished completely before the Mind’s Eye could even register the anomaly. It didn’t strike Alaric with any profound sense of panic, but the sheer lack of confrontation genuinely annoyed him. He had sincerely hoped someone would be arrogant enough to linger long enough to be caught.

Eventually, the chill of the night deepened, and the absolute stillness of the valley confirmed that his vigil had expired.

He took the cigar from his lips, exhaling a thick plume of gray smoke into the wind.

”No ghosts, no plants, no masked idiots,” Alaric muttered, his voice laced with dry, undeniable disappointment. ”Disappointing.”

He turned his back on the frozen graveyard, letting gravity release him entirely as he flew eastward, charting a course toward the distant, vibrant glow of the Konoha war camp.

The transition from the dead, frozen wasteland to the living encampment was jarringly profound.

Konoha Forward Command Camp - Land of Grass

While the battlefield had been silent and corpse-still, the Konoha forward operating base was warm, loud, smoky, and defiantly alive. Yet, the atmosphere was not initially one of boisterous, cartoonish revelry; it was saturated with a profound, bone-deep exhaustion and the staggering, intoxicating weight of sheer relief.

Shinobi sat clustered around roaring campfires, the orange light flickering over faces smeared with mud, soot, and dried blood. Some were methodically unwrapping torn bandages; others were meticulously scrubbing the grime from their armor, pointedly ignoring the blood that remained stubbornly trapped beneath their fingernails. Combat medics, who had spent the entire grueling day frantically fighting to pull their comrades back from the brink of death, were finally sitting down, their hands shaking so violently they could barely hold their own cups of water. Near the center of the camp, designated cooks stirred massive, iron pots of thick, calorie-dense stew, the savory aroma cutting through the lingering scent of ozone.

Several injured men slept soundly with half-eaten bowls resting beside their bedrolls. In some corners of the camp, shinobi laughed entirely too loudly, the sharp, jagged sound born of a relief that simply had nowhere else to go. In others, veterans sat in absolute, hollow silence, staring blankly into the flames because the friends they had marched out with that morning had not marched back.

It was a highly unusual scene. Under normal military doctrine, when a shinobi force secured a victory or completed a campaign, they did not linger to make memories. They coldly secured the perimeter, counted the dead, sealed the bodies into scrolls, and marched back to their hidden village with maximum, unyielding efficiency. War camps were temporary wounds inflicted upon the land, not places of gathering.

But Tsunade Senju had made a deliberate, uncompromising decision.

The army would remain in the Land of Grass for one night.

They would rest. They would eat real, hot food. They would drink. They would mourn the fallen. And, most importantly, they would be allowed to remember that they had survived. It was a testament to the Godaime’s brilliant leadership; after enduring days of brutal, unrelenting pressure, after watching a teenager trade blows with a Kage, and after witnessing the blonde anomaly casually force an entire nation to withdraw, the army desperately needed one night for reality to safely settle into their bones.

Alaric descended smoothly from the night sky, his boots touching down silently near the perimeter of the largest command tent.

At first, only a handful of perimeter guards noticed the towering silhouette. Then, the recognition spread. A nearby chunin froze mid-sentence, his eyes widening. Another dropped his wooden spoon into the dirt. Someone near the medic tents reverently whispered Alaric’s name, and the murmur rushed across the sprawling camp like a spark catching on dry kindling.

The cheering began.

It didn’t erupt uniformly. It built naturally, a rising crescendo of varied, desperate gratitude. Some cheered because the man in the black uniform had definitively ended the war. Some cheered because he had stepped in to protect the Ice Demon when the sky began to fall. Some cheered simply because his overwhelming, god-like presence made them feel incredibly, fundamentally safe. Others cheered merely because everyone else was cheering, and their collective relief desperately required a sound.

Alaric paused, the cigar still held loosely between his fingers, raising a single, platinum-blonde brow at the deafening applause.

”I leave you people alone for a few hours,” Alaric muttered dryly, shaking his head with a faint, amused smirk, ”and military discipline completely collapses.”

Before he could take another step, the crowd parted respectfully, allowing a familiar, teal-clad figure to approach.

Haku looked impeccably clean, the mud and grime of the battlefield having been washed away, but he was still visibly carrying the toll of the duel. His left shoulder was heavily, immaculately bandaged where the Dust Release had grazed him, and his posture, though retaining its usual elegant composure, was slightly stiff, betraying the tightly wrapped ribs concealed beneath his kimono.

He stopped a polite distance away, offering a small, deeply exhausted bow.

”Sensei,” Haku greeted, his voice carrying a quiet, desperate plea for salvation. ”I believe it is finally your turn to stand in the center of everyone’s admiration. I have endured quite enough attempts to hand me alcohol for one evening.”

Alaric chuckled, taking a slow puff of his cigar as he looked his student up and down. ”It comes with the territory of dropping Kage-level threats, kid. How bad was it?”

Haku’s perfectly serene expression tightened into something resembling genuine, polite suffering.

”I have been offered more cups than I have hands to hold them,” Haku reported precisely, ”four bowls of stew that I did not ask for, several deeply inaccurate, overly theatrical compliments regarding my speed, and at least one terribly rhymed song that attempted to compare my ice mirrors to a moonlit romance.” Haku let out a soft, long-suffering sigh. ”I would honestly prefer to return to combat.”

Before Alaric could offer a cynical piece of advice on handling fame, the heavy canvas flap of the command tent was shoved roughly aside.

Tsunade emerged into the firelight, flanked closely by Shikaku Nara and several high-ranking Jonin commanders. The Godaime Hokage looked profoundly tired, yet undeniably relieved. Her green haori hung slightly loose over her shoulders, and her blonde hair was a fraction less perfect than its usual immaculate state, but she still carried herself with the absolute, uncompromising gravity of a ruler who had just won a war.

She locked her amber eyes onto Alaric, raising a hand to stall whatever strategic debriefing he was about to initiate.

”Whatever details, disasters, or impossible warnings you’re carrying in that head of yours, Alaric,” Tsunade declared, her voice firm and ringing with finality, ”they can absolutely wait until morning.”

Alaric raised a skeptical brow, tapping the ash from his cigar. ”That is a remarkably dangerous sentence when I am involved, Hokage-sama.”

Standing behind her, Shikaku Nara shoved his hands deep into his pockets, letting out a dry, exhausted sigh. ”Which is exactly why she specifically said morning.”

Tsunade nodded, making her intentions explicitly clear. The war was over for the night. Iwagakure had withdrawn beyond the borders. Konoha had secured the immediate theater. The shinobi had bled enough, and they deserved to rest without the looming shadow of the next apocalypse ruining their meal.

”What about the perimeter?” Alaric asked, his tone dropping its playful edge, probing the tactical reality.

Tsunade didn’t bristle; she knew the question wasn’t an insult to her competence. ”Yes, we have sentries posted. The rotations have been significantly reduced, but not eliminated. The camp is layered with triple-redundant barrier seals. I’m tired, Alaric, not stupid.” She paused, a weary, knowing smirk touching her lips. ”And yes, I was also counting heavily on you being difficult enough that anything foolish enough to attack this camp tonight would be violently removed from the census before I even had to wake up.”

Alaric laughed, a rich, genuine sound that carried over the crackling fires.

”Fair point,” Alaric conceded. However, the dark, lingering paranoia regarding the stolen Rinnegan and the ghost of the Uchiha refused to entirely settle. He was not about to leave the perimeter of a celebrating army to a relaxed sentry rotation while Obito and Zetsu were actively moving across the board.

”But I think I’ll tighten the net anyway,” Alaric decided casually.

He didn’t weave a complex string of hand seals. He didn’t even raise his arms. He simply willed his colossal chakra to commune with the earth beneath his boots.

The ground around the command tent suddenly stirred.

Thick, ancient roots and pale, smooth wood violently twisted upward from the soil, groaning loudly as they grew at a hyper-accelerated pace. The timber folded and shaped itself with terrifying, organic precision, branching out until thirty-six distinct wooden figures stood in a perfect, protective ring around the anomaly. For a brief, haunting second, they looked like exquisitely carved statues; then, the bark seams melted away, the wood shifting flawlessly into thirty-six near-perfect replicas of Alaric Jonathan Kenway.

The entire camp went dead silent.

Shinobi stared, their jaws slack. The younger generation, who had only ever heard of the legendary Wood Release in academy textbooks, looked on in sheer, unadulterated awe. The older commanders, however, went noticeably pale, the absolute, foundational symbolism of the First Hokage’s impossible kekkei genkai striking them like a physical blow.

Tsunade stared at the thirty-six clones, her amber eyes wide with a complex mixture of reverence, shock, and deep, administrative exasperation. She knew Alaric possessed the ability… she had seen him casually grow furniture in her office… but witnessing it deployed as a casual military tactic hit entirely differently.

She shook her head slowly, rubbing her temples.

”I knew you had it,” Tsunade muttered, her voice tight with disbelief. ”But it still feels fundamentally wrong watching you casually use my grandfather’s legendary kekkei genkai like a standard guard rotation.”

Alaric smirked, taking a slow puff of his cigar. ”Would you prefer I use it like a war crime instead?”

Tsunade leveled a flat, deadpan stare at him. ”No.”

Satisfied, Alaric turned his attention to the thirty-six clones awaiting his command.

”Set a wide, overlapping perimeter,” Alaric ordered smoothly. ”Rotate in absolute silence. Watch for subterranean movement, monitor the atmospheric pressure for spatial distortions, and immediately eliminate anything that looks like a parasitic plant with opinions. You know exactly what to do.”

The thirty-six clones offered a synchronized, crisp nod.

With a collective burst of pure, untraceable speed, they vanished. They scattered outward, seamlessly melting into the outer camp, ascending to the highest treetops, burying themselves near the underground approaches, and locking down the distant cliff edges, rendering the camp’s security absolutely, terrifyingly impenetrable.

The lingering shock among the army slowly transmuted into a profound, unshakeable comfort. The presence of the clones reassured the exhausted soldiers, reminding them that the man who broke reality was actively standing guard while they slept.

Before the celebrating could resume its boisterous volume, however, Asuma Sarutobi stepped forward into the center of the firelight.

The bearded Jonin commander carried a simple clay cup filled with water. His posture was grounded, stripped of any aristocratic pretense, radiating the quiet, heavy sorrow of a man who understood the brutal arithmetic of survival. His earlier conversation with Alaric about the tragic, cyclical nature of war, peace, and his unborn child informed the solemn gravity of his tone.

He raised the cup high.

The camp gradually, respectfully quieted down, the clatter of bowls and the low murmurs fading into the crackle of the flames.

”Before anyone drinks, laughs, sings, or inevitably lies about how brave they were today…” Asuma’s voice rang out, clear and sincere, carrying the rough edge of a veteran addressing his peers. ”…we remember the ones who aren’t here to do the same.”

He looked around the camp, meeting the eyes of the bruised, bloodied men and women. He didn’t offer a grand, soaring political speech about the Will of Fire; he spoke the unvarnished truth of the trenches.

”Shinobi are often called tools by the rest of the world, because it makes it infinitely easier for the politicians to send us into the meat grinder,” Asuma said quietly. ”But the people who died on this grass today were not tools. They were our comrades. They were our friends. They were students, teachers, rivals, siblings, sons, and daughters. They were people who had plans for tomorrow.”

A seasoned medic-nin stepped forward, unrolling a short, blood-stained scroll near the central fire. She did not read the names aloud; the act of placing the ledger near the flames was honor enough.

Everyone bowed their heads.

Tsunade closed her eyes, the ghosts of Dan and Nawaki standing silently beside her. Shikaku lowered his gaze, his brilliant mind momentarily pausing its relentless calculations to honor the silence. Haku stood perfectly still, his hands folded politely within his sleeves, offering a quiet, respectful prayer. Alaric said nothing, taking a slow, silent drag from his cigar as he honored the fallen in his own, detached way.

The camp mourned, the heavy, beautiful weight of survival pressing down on them all.

Then, Asuma lowered his cup slightly, masterfully transitioning the profound grief back into the realm of the living.

”We won,” Asuma declared, his voice gaining strength. ”But a massive part of that victory was paid for by the people who cannot drink with us tonight. So, when we drink, we do not drink because death is funny or because war is a game. We drink because they bought us this night with their blood. And most of them would call us absolute idiots if we wasted it sitting in silence.”

He raised the cup higher. ”To the fallen!”

”To the fallen!” the camp roared in unison, the raw, unified shout shattering the melancholy and allowing the celebration to rise naturally, and rightfully, from the ashes of their grief.

As the echoes of the toast faded, a brief, expectant silence lingered over the fires.

Alaric looked around at the tired, thirsty shinobi, letting out a long, theatrical sigh. He decided that the camp’s existing, meager supply of medicinal alcohol was entirely insufficient for the occasion.

He raised his left hand.

With a series of sharp, rapid pulses of spatial chakra, he unsealed crates upon massive wooden crates directly from his dimensional inventory.

The sheer, ridiculous excess of the drop was staggering. Rows upon rows of heavily reinforced crates materialized in the center of the camp, hitting the dirt with heavy, solid thuds. The camp quartermaster nearly suffered a genuine heart attack as the lids were popped open, revealing the absolute pinnacle of foreign, luxurious intoxication.

There were bottles of aged, amber whiskey from the Scottish highlands, dark, spiced rum from the Caribbean, impossibly expensive red wine from Bordeaux, fine brandy, sweet honey mead, and rows of bottles sealed in thick, aristocratic wax bearing labels in languages that absolutely nobody in the Elemental Nations could even begin to decipher.

Tsunade’s amber eyes sharpened instantly, locking onto the crates as if she had just successfully divined the location of a divine, mythical treasure.

Haku, however, immediately stepped forward, his polite expression fracturing into genuine, medical concern.

”Sensei,” Haku protested smoothly, raising a hand. ”With all due respect, ordering severely exhausted, chakra-depleted soldiers to consume highly potent, unknown foreign alcohol immediately after a major battle is medically irresponsible and could lead to—”

Before Haku could even finish articulating the biological hazards of binge drinking, a burly, bandaged Jonin at the front of the crowd threw his arms up in the air.

”YEAHHHH!”

The entire camp violently erupted into a deafening, euphoric cheer, completely drowning out the Ice Demon’s pragmatic medical advice.

Haku closed his mouth, letting out a soft, defeated sigh.

Alaric chuckled, stepping up to pat his student heavily on the uninjured shoulder. ”You tried, kid. You tried.”

Alaric turned back to the roaring crowd, pointing a stern, commanding finger at the mountain of alcohol.

”Listen up!” Alaric shouted, his voice effortlessly cutting through the din. ”These bottles are expensive. Offensively, obscenely expensive. Some of these vintages were older than most of your prestigious bloodlines before I even bought them. So, I am making this exceptionally clear: if I wake up tomorrow morning and discover that even half of these bottles are still sealed, I will be personally, deeply offended.”

The celebration that followed was warm, lively, and profoundly human, entirely devoid of the cartoonish, reckless partying of academy students. It was the messy, beautiful release of veterans who had stared into the abyss and walked away.

Tsunade immediately bypassed the quartermaster, claiming a heavy, dark glass bottle of overproof Caribbean rum. She squinted at the elaborate English label, utterly failed to understand a single word, shrugged her shoulders, and popped the cork with her thumb, taking a long, unbothered swig. Shikaku, sitting nearby with a modest cup of sake, watched her with weary dread.

”If you get drunk and destroy another tactical table tonight, Tsunade-sama,” Shikaku warned dryly, ”the logistics team may actually sit down and cry.”

Tsunade wiped her mouth with the back of her hand, glaring at him amiably. ”Stop being useful for five minutes, Shikaku, and have a drink.”

”…Troublesome…”

True to his nature, Shikaku muttered something about the most troublesome part of winning a war being surviving the subsequent paperwork. When a younger, eager commander approached him to ask about the projected troop movement for the return march, Shikaku simply raised his cup, stared dead ahead, and declared himself temporarily legally dead until sunrise.

Haku, meanwhile, was entirely overwhelmed by the sheer, terrifying force of communal affection.

Shinobi continually approached him, offering profound, tearful praises. They clapped him on his uninjured shoulder, repeatedly calling him ”the one who fought the Tsuchikage.” Haku, ever polite and fiercely accurate, gently corrected them every single time, stating that he had merely survived the Tsuchikage.

The shinobi didn’t care about the semantics; they cheered him anyway. When a fourth, highly intoxicated chunin attempted to force a cup of mead into his hands, Haku looked toward Alaric with an expression that explicitly communicated he would vastly prefer to fight ōnoki again rather than navigate another social interaction.

Alaric himself was treated less like a commanding officer and more like a walking, breathing myth.

Soldiers tentatively approached his perimeter, raising their cups in respectful, awe-struck toasts. Some thanked him profusely for intervening and ending the war without further bloodshed. Others, emboldened by the foreign whiskey, leaned in and asked if the rumors were true… if he had truly frozen the mighty ōnoki in the sky using only a single, whispered word.

Alaric refused to answer directly, taking a smooth drag from his cigar and offering a dry, enigmatic smirk. ”Rumors are terrible, inaccurate things,” he replied smoothly. ”Please, continue spreading that one.”

When a particularly drunk platoon asked him to demonstrate his legendary Wood Release by growing them a set of comfortable lounge chairs, Alaric flatly refused. ”No. Sit on the ground like proper soldiers.”

Amidst the raucous laughter, there were pockets of quiet, necessary vulnerability. Combat medics, having finally exhausted their adrenaline, drank a single cup of wine and instantly fell asleep sitting entirely upright against the supply crates. Passing shinobi moved quietly, gently draping thick woolen blankets over their slumped shoulders.

A veteran commander, his face heavily scarred and flushed with alcohol, stumbled over to Haku. The man began to openly weep, thanking the boy for surviving the impossible duel and holding the line. The commander attempted to bow in deep gratitude, but his inebriated legs gave out, nearly sending him face-first into the mud. Haku caught him with flawless, polite precision, gently guiding the weeping man to a comfortable seat near the fire.

Through it all, Alaric and Tsunade engaged in a fierce, good-natured banter regarding the sudden appearance of the alcohol.

”You’ve been hiding premium, high-grade liquor from the Hokage’s office for three years!?” Tsunade accused, pointing a finger at him as she took another swig of rum.

”It was never hidden, Tsunade,” Alaric corrected lazily, blowing a smoke ring. ”You simply had no legal jurisdiction over my private stash.”

”I am the Hokage!” she shot back. ”That is borderline treasonous!”

As the night wore on and the frantic energy of the celebration mellowed into the comfortable, exhausted hum of shared survival, Alaric quietly excused himself from the center of the camp. He walked toward the dark, quiet edge of the perimeter, leaning his back against a towering oak tree as he looked out over the distant, scarred battlefield.

A few minutes later, the soft, frictionless crunch of boots on frosted grass signaled an approach.

Haku stepped out of the shadows, looking profoundly relieved to have finally escaped the suffocating adulation of the main camp. He stopped beside Alaric, offering a quiet, deeply respectful bow of his head.

”Thank you, Sensei,” Haku said softly, his voice barely audible over the distant crackle of the campfires. ”For stepping in when you did.”

Alaric didn’t turn his head, keeping his gaze fixed on the dark horizon. He took a slow drag from his cigar. He was not going to coddle the boy with false platitudes, nor was he going to diminish the incredible feat Haku had achieved.

”You did exceptionally well today, Haku,” Alaric stated, his tone carrying the absolute, objective weight of a grandmaster evaluating a peer. ”You fought brilliantly. You pushed him harder, and read his tactics faster, than the vast majority of the living Kage would have managed against ōnoki.”

Haku lowered his eyes slightly, accepting the praise, but the analytical perfectionist within him demanded the truth.

”But at that extreme height,” Haku admitted quietly, acknowledging the brutal, unvarnished reality of the duel’s climax, ”when he prepared the final Particle Style... I could not reach him. He would have killed me.”

Alaric turned his head, his blue eyes locking onto his student. He did not soften the blow. He did not offer a comforting lie.

”Yes,” Alaric confirmed bluntly. ”He would have.”

Haku accepted the brutal assessment quietly, his expression remaining serene.

”But that does not mean you failed,” Alaric continued, turning his gaze back to the sky. ”It simply means that ōnoki was genuinely worthy of his title. You pushed him so hard, so relentlessly, that you forced a reigning Kage to completely abandon the battlefield, flee beyond your mirror field, and desperately rely on a domain where your movement was fundamentally limited. You forced him to change battlefields because he could not afford to keep fighting in yours.”

Alaric glanced sideways at the boy, a proud, distinct smirk touching his lips. ”That is victory enough for any sane shinobi.”

Haku absorbed the lesson, the lingering frustration of his perceived inadequacy melting away into a profound, clarifying understanding. He looked up at the vast, starry sky above them.

”Does this mean...” Haku asked thoughtfully, ”...that I will eventually need to learn true, unassisted flight to counter opponents of that caliber?”

Alaric chuckled, a low, rumbling sound of amusement.

”Eventually,” Alaric smirked, offering a promise of future, impossible growth.

Haku smiled faintly, turning his gaze back toward the warm, glowing heart of the Konoha encampment. He watched the soldiers laughing, sharing drinks, and leaning on one another.

”Everyone seems incredibly happy tonight,” Haku observed softly.

Alaric’s expression softened slightly, the hard edges of the mercenary giving way to the quiet empathy of a leader who understood the cost of a crown.

”They need to be,” Alaric replied quietly. ”Not because the war was clean, or flawless, or easily won. Because it was not. Survivors desperately need nights exactly like this, Haku... otherwise, the sheer, crushing weight of the blood they spill hollows them out until there is nothing left but the blade. Although… that’s what they always did in the past.”

Haku nodded in silent agreement, allowing the profound wisdom to settle in his heart before bowing his head once more and quietly returning to the warmth of the camp, leaving his mentor to the solitude of the shadows.

Left entirely alone at the edge of the perimeter, Alaric crossed his arms, his blue eyes drifting back toward the distant, frozen battlefield.

The camaraderie and the laughter at his back were a beautiful, necessary release, but his mind refused to rest. His thoughts inexorably drifted back to the dark, churning currents moving beneath the surface of the world. He thought of Obito, slipping through reality with the stolen, divine eyes of Nagato. He thought of the parasitic, omniscient intelligence of Zetsu, weaving through the roots of the earth. And he thought of Madara Uchiha.

Alaric did not know for absolute, undeniable certain that the Ghost of the Uchiha had already been fully resurrected. But the brutal arithmetic of the Rinnegan and the desperation of the Akatsuki’s failing board strongly suggested that if Madara wasn’t already moving, he would be revived terrifyingly soon.

He understood, with a cold, sinking clarity, that tonight’s vibrant, tearful celebration was likely one of the very last simple, straightforward victories Konoha would enjoy before the world fundamentally, violently changed.

Out in the darkness, his thirty-six Wood Clones maintained their flawless, overlapping perimeter. They reported nothing. Nothing attacked. Nothing moved in the shadows.

And to a man who understood the paranoia of war, that absolute, unbroken silence almost bothered him more than an ambush.

For one night, beneath the heavily guarded trees of the Land of Grass, Konoha allowed itself to remember that survival was a gift worth celebrating, that grief was a burden worth sharing, and that the dawn could wait its turn.

And while the fires of the camp burned warm against the biting cold, Alaric watched the darkness beyond them, knowing with absolute certainty that this was not the end of the war, but merely the last, quiet breath before the world began turning toward Madara Uchiha.
