The Stratosphere - Above the Iwagakure War Camp

”Well... this is awkward.”

”…”

”…”

”…”

”…”

For a long, suspended fraction of eternity, no one moved.

The wind howling across the upper atmosphere seemed to die away, leaving a suffocating, atmospheric stillness in its wake. ōnoki of Both Scales hung suspended in the freezing altitude, his small, aged body battered from the grueling clash below. Blood trailed sluggishly from the shallow, surgical cuts along his wrist and shoulder, while patches of white frost still clung stubbornly to the edges of his heavy robes, a lingering testament to the Ice Demon’s biting domain. His hands remained raised, positioned perfectly to unleash the apocalyptic erasure of the Particle Style, yet the pale, terrifying light of the Dust Release construct slowly sputtered and died between his palms.

He was too shocked, too profoundly horrified by the impossibility of the situation, to maintain the volatile shape transformation safely.

Far below, the devastating roar of the battlefield had ground to a sickening halt.

Thousands of eyes from both armies were turned upward, staring into the sky. The Konoha shinobi stood frozen in sheer, unadulterated disbelief, watching the towering, blonde anomaly casually floating behind the Third Tsuchikage as though he were leaning against a balcony rail. The Iwagakure forces, meanwhile, were gripped by a sudden, paralyzing horror. Their Kage, the bedrock of their military pride, had finally escaped the lethal, frozen cage of Haku’s mirrors, only to discover that something infinitely worse had been quietly waiting for him in the heavens.

Down amidst the shattered ramparts and the frozen mud, Haku stood breathing heavily, leaning slightly against the hilt of his Kusanagi. He looked up, his dark eyes taking in the scene with quiet, absolute composure.

Above them all, Alaric took a slow, savoring drag from his cigar. The ember glowed fiercely against the cold, gray sky. His posture remained utterly relaxed, carrying an almost apologetic demeanor, as if he had inadvertently walked into the wrong room during a private conversation.

ōnoki did not respond to the casual greeting. His veteran instincts, honed by decades of betrayals and sudden ambushes, screamed at him to move.

He aborted his offensive posture entirely and immediately willed himself to descend, intending to drop back toward the battlefield where he could regain distance, find cover among his men, and open up his tactical options.

But he did not move.

Panic, cold and sharp, spiked in the Tsuchikage’s chest. He tried to shift laterally, attempting to strafe through the air to put Alaric in his line of sight.

Nothing happened.

He attempted to rise higher, pushing his chakra to ascend.

Nothing happened.

Desperate, ōnoki channeled a concentrated surge of chakra to lighten his body further with the Light-Weight Rock Technique, hoping to slip out of whatever invisible snare had caught him. His chakra flowed perfectly. The technique activated without resistance. Yet, space itself simply refused to release him.

He abruptly reversed the flow, attempting to increase his weight with catastrophic suddenness, praying that the sheer, sudden mass would break the invisible hold suspending him.

Still, absolutely nothing happened.

He was not paralyzed. His muscles answered his commands, his chakra coiled seamlessly through his pathways, and his mind remained razor-sharp. But his physical coordinates in the world had been locked. He had been pinned in place by a force that operated entirely outside his own physical agency.

Only then did Alaric speak.

”Stay.”

The single word was quiet, delivered with a lazy, almost conversational cadence, yet it carried the absolute, undeniable weight of universal law.

There was no dramatic surge of killing intent, no roaring explosion of visible chakra to announce the technique. But as ōnoki strained against the hold, he caught a fleeting, microscopic glimpse of Alaric’s reflection in a drifting ice shard. For the briefest fraction of a second, the anomaly’s natural blue eye had bled into the concentric, ripple-patterned rings of the Rinnegan, before shifting seamlessly back to normal.

Alaric was not holding ōnoki’s limbs with wind or whatever element; he had simply utilized the gravitational authority of the Deva Path to politely, firmly inform gravity that the Tsuchikage was no longer allowed to leave.

ōnoki realized this with a creeping, existential horror.

”Release me,” ōnoki snarled, his voice a low, gravelly grind of wounded pride and rising desperation.

Alaric took the cigar from his lips, exhaling a thin, fragrant plume of smoke that drifted over the Tsuchikage’s shoulder.

”No.”

There was no anger in the refusal. No dramatic, villainous threat. Just a simple, immutable denial.

ōnoki’s dark eyes shifted downward, looking at the teal-clad boy standing amidst the frozen ruins of the camp, and then drifted back up to the man floating leisurely behind him. The contrast between the two Konoha shinobis was stark, terrifyingly illuminating.

Haku had been a nightmare because he was a perfectly honed blade. The boy was fast, disciplined, and precise, a lethal force of nature that operated brilliantly within the specific battlefield he had shaped from ice and mirrors.

Alaric, however, was something else entirely. He was not merely faster or stronger than the boy. He existed completely outside the established rules of engagement. He did not need preparation. He did not require a specialized field to trap his prey. He had simply appeared behind a reigning Kage, waited with insulting patience, and casually stopped him from existing anywhere else.

ōnoki fought to keep his legendary pride intact, his jaw set tightly, but his survival instincts were screaming. He had lived too long, survived too many eras of warfare, to foolishly ignore a monster whose power defied normal arithmetic.

”What are you?” ōnoki asked, the question pulled from the deepest, most pragmatic corner of his veteran soul.

Alaric smiled faintly, tapping a speck of ash from his cigar.

”A Konoha shinobi, apparently,” Alaric replied, his tone dripping with a dry, self-aware irony.

He drifted smoothly through the air, completing a slow half-circle until he hovered directly in front of the trapped Tsuchikage, offering the older man the courtesy of looking his executioner in the eye.

”Iwagakure has already lost this campaign, ōnoki,” Alaric stated, dropping the humor to lay out the cold, undeniable logistics of the board. He gestured lazily with his cigar toward the devastated valley below. ”Look at your camp. Your forward line has been violently breached. Your wounded are exposed to the elements. Your defensive ramparts have completely collapsed, and your medical capacity is catastrophically insufficient to handle the bleeding.”

Alaric met the Tsuchikage’s furious glare with a gaze of glacial calm.

”Your arrival certainly revived their morale, I’ll give you that. But inspiration cannot replace food, medicine, manpower, or a viable strategic position. Konoha’s intelligence, our logistics, and our coordination have already vastly outpaced your supply lines. If you stubbornly insist on continuing to fight, you will not save your army. You will only give them a grander funeral.”

ōnoki’s pride flared hot and violent. The sheer humiliation of being lectured on military strategy while hovering helplessly in the sky made his blood boil.

”Stay out of a war between Iwagakure and Konohagakure, outsider!” ōnoki snapped, his voice vibrating with defiance. ”This is a matter of sovereignty and stone!”

Alaric raised a single, platinum-blonde brow. He glanced down at the standard-issue olive-green flak jacket he was currently wearing, then tapped the metal plate of the Leaf headband strapped securely to his upper arm.

”You do know I’m a Konoha shinobi, right?” Alaric pointed out, his voice laced with a dry, almost comedic disbelief.

ōnoki did not laugh. The veins on his forehead throbbed as his hands clenched into fists at his sides.

Alaric’s expression sobered entirely, his blue eyes hardening into something ancient and unyielding.

”Iwagakure has already swallowed defeat from Konoha once before, old man,” Alaric said, his words deliberately chosen to strike at the deepest scars of the Third Shinobi World War. ”You survived it. Your village survived it. Your pride makes yielding feel like an impossibility right now, but history says otherwise.”

The line cut deep. It humiliated ōnoki, scraping against the raw, bleeding memory of Minato Namikaze wiping out a thousand of his men in a single flash of yellow light. But the agonizing truth was that the blonde anomaly was not lying. Iwa had surrendered before, and they had rebuilt.

”You have no right to interfere!” ōnoki snarled, desperately trying to reclaim some shred of his dignity. He glared down at Haku, then back at Alaric. ”This fight was between the Ice Demon and myself! If you had stayed in the shadows where you belong, I would have beaten him!”

Alaric did not deny it.

He didn’t defend Haku’s honor with blind, emotional loyalty, nor did he argue the hypothetical variables of the duel.

”Probably,” Alaric admitted calmly, taking another slow puff of his cigar.

ōnoki blinked, genuinely surprised by the easy, unbothered concession.

”But I wasn’t going to allow that,” Alaric continued, his voice dropping into a register of profound, mentoring absolute. He looked down at the teal-clad boy standing amidst the frost. ”Haku pushed you farther than almost any shinobi in this world could have managed today. He forced a reigning Kage to abandon the frozen battlefield, climb entirely beyond his mirror field, and desperately rely on an extreme altitude advantage just to secure a firing window. He proved himself brilliantly.”

Alaric turned his piercing gaze back to the Tsuchikage.

”But I am his sensei,” Alaric said quietly. ”And a sensei who watches his student die just to prove a philosophical point is a very poor sensei.”

Down on the frozen mud, Haku heard the words carry on the wind. He did not feel offended. He did not feel as though his victory had been stolen or his pride wounded. Instead, he lowered his dark eyes slightly, a profound mixture of humility and deep, anchoring relief washing over his exhausted frame. He understood implicitly. Alaric had trusted him enough to let him go toe-to-toe with a Kage, but he loved him enough to ensure that pride would never become his death sentence.

”So,” Alaric announced, shifting the conversation back to the macro-politics of the continent. ”You have exactly three choices, ōnoki. Surrender, and your wounded down there get to live. Continue your grudge match against Haku, and one of you will inevitably die today. Or, try to erase him from the sky again... and I will end the war myself.”

ōnoki’s eyes narrowed into dangerous, flinty slits, his jaw clenching as he measured the gravity holding him captive.

”Is that a threat?” ōnoki demanded, his voice a low, rumbling earthquake of defiance.

Alaric smiled faintly, a devastatingly cold expression.

”No,” Alaric replied softly. ”A threat implies uncertainty.”

The line landed with catastrophic weight.

Below them, both armies physically felt the suffocating pressure of the statement, even if the foot soldiers could not parse every word spoken in the stratosphere. The elite sensory shinobi scattered throughout the Konoha and Iwa ranks suddenly felt the invisible, tyrannical gravitational field wrapping around the Tsuchikage, realizing with mounting horror that the leader of the Stone was being absolutely restrained without the blonde man moving a single muscle.

Yet, ōnoki remained defiant.

”Iwagakure does not kneel,” ōnoki declared, his voice trembling not with fear, but with an unyielding, archaic pride. ”We are the Will of Stone! You stand there, dripping in Konoha’s arrogance, dressing your domination in noble words, but we will not break simply because you demand it!”

Alaric listened to the passionate, desperate defiance for a long moment, the smoke from his cigar swirling lazily between them.

”You’re fighting yesterday’s war, ōnoki,” Alaric sighed, shaking his head with a weary, almost pitying look.

The casual dismissal irritated ōnoki infinitely more than the physical restraint.

”What do you mean by that!?” ōnoki demanded, his hands curling into tight fists.

Alaric gestured broadly toward the ruined battlefield below. He pointed to the frozen mud, the bleeding, groaning wounded, the shattered earth ramparts, the fading steam from Haku’s ice dome, and the terrifying, smooth white scar of the Dust Release that had erased a portion of the valley.

”This conflict,” Alaric explained, his tone shifting into the cold, strategic cadence of a global architect, ”has already served its entire purpose in the larger game. Blood has been spilled. The Kage have moved from their towers. The hidden villages are now actively watching one another. The board has become loud enough that those hiding in the absolute dark will finally begin to move.”

He locked his blue eyes onto the Tsuchikage’s, stripping away the illusion of regional supremacy.

”The world is about to face something much, much worse than a petty border dispute over pride and stolen relief funds. The next conflict will not be Iwa against Konoha, or Stone against Leaf, or old grudges dressed up as military strategy. It will be a war that requires all Five Great Nations to stand together just to survive the opening volley. Konoha will invite multiple Kages of the major villages and will ask of the esteemed general of Tetsu no Kuni, Mifune, to host a Five Kage Summit.”

”...Summit?” ōnoki scoffed, a harsh, bitter sound of sheer disbelief. ”Who could possibly possess the power to force the Five Great Nations to unite? You speak of fairy tales designed to force a surrender.”

Alaric’s faint humor faded entirely, leaving behind a solemn, chilling gravity.

”Oh, you know him,” Alaric murmured softly. He took a slow, deliberate drag from his cigar, the cherry burning a fierce, bloody red. ”The man who beat your sensei and yourself without even drawing his sword.”

ōnoki froze.

”Madara Uchiha.”

The name did not merely shock ōnoki; it violently violently unspooled a trauma he had kept buried beneath decades of stone.

For a breathless, agonizing moment, the freezing sky above the Land of Grass completely vanished from his mind. He was abruptly yanked backward through time, standing as a younger man beside his revered sensei, Mu. He remembered the suffocating, god-like presence of Madara Uchiha. He remembered the gleaming red armor, the cold, spinning tomoe of the Sharingan, and the terrible, absolute contempt in the Uchiha’s eyes. He remembered the distinct, humiliating sensation of being measured by a titan and immediately dismissed as an insect. He remembered the crushing realization that some monsters did not fight for victory, because they already considered victory to be an inevitable, boring formality.

His young, foolish pride had been violently broken that day, reforged in the fires of survival into the hard, uncompromising Will of Stone he now championed.

ōnoki snapped back to the present, his breathing ragged, a cold sweat breaking out across his wrinkled brow.

”Hashirama Senju killed him,” ōnoki snarled, the declaration sounding like an equal mix of aggressive denial and desperate, frantic certainty. ”He died at the Valley of the End!”

Alaric chuckled softly. It wasn’t a mocking sound; it was almost sad.

”Who do you think is the true mastermind behind the Akatsuki?” Alaric asked, his voice low.

ōnoki’s eyes sharpened instantly, his brilliant mind racing to connect the geopolitical dots.

Before the Tsuchikage could voice his denial, Alaric slowly shook his head.

”No. Don’t answer. You’re entirely too intelligent to lie to yourself once the pieces actually start moving on the board,” Alaric said gently. ”The Akatsuki were never merely a rogue mercenary organization collecting bounties. The systematic collection of the Jinchūriki was never driven by simple criminal ambition. The Rinnegan is already moving, ōnoki. And the shadow standing directly behind the Akatsuki is intimately tied to Madara’s grand design.”

Alaric exhaled a plume of smoke, letting the apocalyptic truth settle over the old man.

”Whether you choose to believe me right now or later, the hidden villages will very soon face an entity that no single nation can survive alone.”

ōnoki was furious. He was infuriated because Alaric was speaking of impossible, world-ending nightmares with the calm, unwavering certainty of a man who already knew exactly how the history books would be written.

”Do not speak that name lightly,” ōnoki ground out, his voice trembling with the ghosts of his past.

”I never do,” Alaric replied seamlessly.

The revelation, paired with the inescapable reality of his physical subjugation, pushed ōnoki’s legendary pride to its absolute breaking point. He looked down at the battlefield. He saw his wounded shinobi bleeding into the frost, he saw Iwa’s broken, desperate camp, he saw Haku standing quietly below, and the Konoha forces watching their Kage hang suspended in the sky.

He looked back at Alaric, his dark eyes burning with a fierce, suicidal resolve.

”If you mean to make me crawl back to Iwagakure with my head bowed and my army broken, serving as a warning to the rest of the world,” ōnoki declared, his voice ringing with the iron dignity of a man choosing death over humiliation, ”then spare me the political theater and kill me here. I will not return home as your spared relic.”

Alaric studied the proud, defiant old man through the drifting smoke of his cigar. He paused for a long, deliberate moment.

”Pointless,” Alaric said simply.

ōnoki’s eyes narrowed into slits.

”Killing you right now would certainly satisfy pride,” Alaric explained, his tone shifting back into the cold, clinical arithmetic of an empire builder. ”It would satisfy yours, because you would die a martyr rather than surrender. It would satisfy mine, because it proves a point. And it would likely satisfy a few men down there in the mud who lost friends today to your earth jutsu. But tactically? It solves absolutely nothing.”

Alaric gestured broadly toward the horizon.

”The Five Great Nations will need to unite against the coming threat. A dead Tsuchikage only creates a massive, bloody power vacuum and political chaos in Iwagakure. A humiliated, bankrupt, and starving Iwa becomes entirely useless on a global battlefield. A leaderless Stone becomes a liability.”

He locked his blue eyes onto ōnoki, ensuring the old man understood the cold pragmatism of his survival. ”I do not need Iwa shattered, old man. I need Iwa alive.”

Alaric took another drag, preparing to deliver the final, most disorienting blow of the engagement.

”So, here are the surrender terms,” Alaric announced smoothly. ”Konohagakure will not request a single Ryo in war reparations from Iwagakure.”

ōnoki blinked, his jaw slackening slightly. He was deeply suspicious, profoundly confused, and inexplicably insulted. He had fully expected a crushing humiliation… crippling financial punishments, massive territorial concessions, hostages demanded from the noble families, or a humiliating, public apology broadcasted across the continent. Instead, Alaric was offering absolute amnesty.

Before ōnoki could voice his suspicion, Alaric went further.

”Furthermore,” Alaric continued, ”I will personally speak to the Daimyo of the Earth Country. I will ensure that Iwagakure receives an immediate influx of royal funds to repair the damages it suffered during this campaign. The money will be more than enough to rebuild your medical stores, restore your fortifications, compensate the families of your fallen, restock your supplies, and completely stabilize Iwa after this defeat.”

ōnoki was utterly stunned. The sheer, overwhelming generosity felt like a physical slap to the face. His pride violently rejected the offering.

”You insult me with charity!?” ōnoki roared, his face flushing dark with anger. ”You seek to buy the obedience of the Stone Village with stolen coin!?”

”It isn’t charity,” Alaric answered with dry, brutal honesty, entirely unfazed by the outburst. ”It’s investment.”

He stepped closer, the gravitational hold remaining absolute.

”A starving army cannot fight gods, ōnoki,” Alaric reasoned, his voice low and intense. ”A bankrupt village cannot hold a defensive front against immortal monsters. And a humiliated Kage cannot drag his prideful people into a necessary, desperate alliance with former enemies when the sky literally begins to fall.”

He took the cigar from his lips, his expression flattening into a mask of pure, unapologetic pragmatism.

”Obedience? No,” Alaric scoffed softly, shaking his head. ”Cooperation. I have absolutely no interest in ruling your rocks, old man. I need Iwagakure angry, armed, repaired, and alive. Preferably pointed at the correct enemy this time around. That’s why the summit a month from now should happen.”

ōnoki fell silent. He stared at the towering blonde anomaly, his brilliant, political mind violently churning as he processed the trap he had been placed in.

It was a cage built not of cruelty, but of inescapable, pragmatic logic.

If he stubbornly continued the war out of sheer pride, Iwagakure would suffer a devastating slaughter, and he would die pointlessly. If he died, Iwa would lose its Kage during the dawn of a global, existential crisis. If he refused the financial aid out of spite, his own wounded men and starving civilians would pay the ultimate price for his arrogance. And if Madara Uchiha truly had returned to the board… then their old, petty border grudges were instantly rendered meaningless.

Surrendering was a bitter, humiliating poison to swallow, but survival was his ultimate, sacred duty to his village.

ōnoki looked down at the battlefield below.

He saw his wounded men staring up at him with wide, trusting eyes. He saw the exhausted combat medics clutching bloodied bandages, the young, untested shinobi trembling in the frozen mud, and the hardened veterans silently waiting, perfectly willing to follow him into the abyss if he only gave the order.

He closed his eyes, taking a long, shuddering breath that seemed to carry the weight of the entire mountain range. He chose them over his pride.

He did not bow his head. He did not utter a single word of thanks to Alaric, nor did he declare Konoha to be righteous or merciful.

He simply stopped resisting the invisible current of the world.

”Iwagakure will withdraw,” ōnoki stated, each syllable dragged painfully over gravel.

”Of course,” Alaric replied calmly, his tone conveying no gloating or triumph.

ōnoki opened his eyes, his dark gaze burning with a potent mixture of hatred, ancient grief, and a profound, waking fear.

”But not because we kneel to Konoha,” ōnoki continued, his voice trembling slightly with the weight of the concession. ”We withdraw because if Madara Uchiha truly walks this world again… then this war is already too small.”

Alaric nodded his head once in slow, solemn agreement. He immediately severed his chakra tether to the Deva Path’s mechanics.

The invisible, crushing gravitational hold vanished.

ōnoki felt the natural laws of physics and his own flight technique instantly return fully to his command. He didn’t stumble or waver in the air, but the sudden return of his own autonomy felt monumentally significant.

”There he is,” Alaric murmured smoothly, bringing his cigar back to his lips with a faint, respectful smirk. ”The old man who survived long enough to learn.”

ōnoki glared at him, a fierce, promised retribution lingering in his eyes, but he did not offer a verbal reply. He turned his back on the anomaly and descended rapidly toward the frozen, bloodied earth of the battlefield.

Below, Haku watched the Tsuchikage land heavily before his people. The boy remained perfectly still, his Kusanagi resting quietly at his hip. Haku understood implicitly that the battle was officially over, but not because of a simple, martial victory. It had ended because his Sensei had effortlessly turned a lethal, desperate duel into a necessary, strategic pivot for the entire shinobi world.

The Konoha shinobi did not erupt into jubilant cheers. The atmosphere was far too heavy, poisoned by the sudden, terrifying invocation of Madara’s name, which had rippled through the sensory nets of the commanders. The Iwa shinobi did not celebrate their survival; they felt the crushing, terrible weight of their Kage’s heavy silence as he landed among them.

ōnoki stood before his broken army, wounded, frostbitten, bleeding, and profoundly exhausted, but he remained proudly, stubbornly upright.

He raised his voice, ensuring it carried across the frozen mud to every single warrior present.

”All Iwagakure forces… withdraw.”

A few of the younger, adrenaline-fueled Iwa shinobi gasped in shock, weak protests dying on their lips as ōnoki silenced them with a single, withering glare.

”Carry the wounded,” ōnoki ordered firmly, his voice steadying his men. ”Gather the dead if you can. We leave this battlefield with our heads held high. Survival is not the same thing as kneeling.”

Haku did not pursue them.

As the Konoha vanguard looked toward Haku and their respective commanders for orders, the Ice Demon quietly raised a single, slender hand. He signaled the Leaf forces to hold their fire and stand down, silently reinforcing his character; he fought ruthlessly to end the war, not to massacre a retreating, broken enemy.

High above the devastation, Alaric remained floating in the cold sky, the thick smoke from his cigar trailing slowly into the clouds. He watched ōnoki coordinate the withdrawal, his expression perfectly calm, but his brilliant mind was already moving miles beyond the Land of Grass. He was calculating the movements of the Akatsuki, Obito’s paranoia, the resurrection of Madara, the safety of the Tailed Beasts, and the inevitably brutal, global war looming on the horizon.

Haku looked up toward the heavens, his pale eyes finding his sensei.

Their eyes met briefly across the vast distance. Alaric offered a small, profound nod of his head, wordlessly acknowledging that his student had performed brilliantly against a legend.

Haku lowered his head slightly in return. It was not the bow of a subordinate ashamed of requiring a rescue; it was the respectful acknowledgment of a student who perfectly understood that today’s bloody lesson was far larger than the mere arithmetic of combat.

And beneath the frozen, shattered sky of the Land of Grass, the war between Stone and Leaf began to die, not with triumph, not with surrender alone, but with the first, terrifying shadow of a far greater war stretching inevitably across them all.
