Chapter 363: Chapter 362: The Heat of the Dead

---Previously---

’What...’ Haku thought, his breath hitching slightly in his throat.

Pressing into the absolute limits of his extended sensory range were two chakra signatures. They were not attempting to hide. They were not attempting to mask their approach. They were moving with a slow, deliberate, and terrifyingly arrogant pace.

But it wasn’t their lack of stealth that paralyzed the Ice Devil; it was the sheer, incomprehensible density of their energy. The signatures felt heavy, dark, and overwhelmingly lethal... oceans of concentrated power that made the six elite trackers he had just slaughtered feel like flickering candlelights.

And they were heading precisely, unerringly, toward his exact coordinates.

Haku’s hand slowly, instinctively drifted toward the hilt of his Kusanagi. His polite, serene demeanor vanished, replaced by the cold, absolute focus of an apex predator realizing it had just been cornered by something larger.

’Another set of trackers this time?’ Haku wondered, his mind racing through the Bingo Book files Alaric had forced him to memorize. ’No... these aren’t mere trackers. This feels like a natural disaster walking through the woods.’

---Now---

The Land of Waterfalls - Elemental Nations

The forest did not welcome them.

That was the very first thing Haku understood as he remained perched within the dark, sprawling canopy, his presence folded so tightly into the damp night that even the drifting mist seemed to pass through him without the slightest resistance.

The Land of Waterfalls was a place that normally breathed... water rushed over polished stones, broad leaves whispered in the wind, and insects hummed in a layered, constant symphony of living noise. But now, as those two distinct chakra signatures pressed closer to his perimeter, the valley felt as if it had drawn a long, suffocating breath and had entirely forgotten how to release it.

Haku did not move... no, he did not need to.

His senses, sharpened far beyond the natural limits of any ordinary shinobi by both relentless training and the ancient, golden seal that pulsed quietly beneath his skin, painted a perfectly clear image of what approached through the gloom.

They were heavy.

They were slow.

They were entirely unconcealed.

And they were impossibly, overwhelmingly dense.

The mist directly ahead of him trembled first, not from a shift in the wind, but from a sudden, oppressive heat that simply did not belong in this cold, saturated environment. The rising temperature warped the air in subtle, shimmering ripples, distorting the trunks of the trees at their edges like reflections seen through a disturbed, boiling pond. A second later, a low, rolling hiss followed, deep and mechanical, sounding exactly like breath being forcefully exhaled through a highly pressurized chamber.

’Steam?’ Haku’s dark eyes narrowed slightly, tracking the unnatural fog. ’Hm... Boil Release.’

Before the tactical implication of that thought could fully settle, the second presence bled into his awareness with a much more violent, visceral footprint. It did not merely distort the environment; it consumed it. The damp, mossy soil beneath the southern ridge darkened, then softened, and then began to glow with a faint, angry orange light, as if the earth itself had been forcefully commanded to remember a deeper, far more violent state of existence.

Lava.

Haku exhaled slowly, the breath leaving his parted lips as a thin, highly controlled stream of white vapor that instantly vanished into the humid air. ”Lava Release as well? To possess both of those specific, destructive natures in one deployment... that could only be the Jinchūrikis of Iwa.”

His mind raced through the Bingo Book files Alaric had burned into his memory and the old ones he purposely read for his enjoyment. ’But aren’t Iwagakure’s Han and Rōshi confirmed to be dead?’

’No, they could be the new containers...’

He murmured the question quietly, almost politely, as though acknowledging a pair of guests he had explicitly not invited into his home.

Then, they stepped into the clearing.

The first figure was a towering behemoth of a man, entirely encased in heavy, layered crimson armor that seemed designed less for physical protection and more for internal containment. Thin, glowing seams along the thick plating exhaled steady, rhythmic streams of white steam, each breath escaping with a sharp, controlled hiss. The elaborate mask that obscured his lower face rendered him less human and far more akin to a living, walking weapon given shape.

The second man walked beside the giant without any sense of urgency, though the very ground beneath his sandals betrayed the catastrophic power he held. Each step he took softened the damp earth into bubbling slag, heat radiating outward in slow, oppressive waves, while faint, glowing traces of molten chakra pulsed along his exposed skin like veins of liquid fire running beneath cracked stone.

They did not look around the clearing.

They did not search the undergrowth.

They walked forward with the calm, terrifying certainty of men who already knew exactly where their prey stood.

’So it’s really Han and Roshi,’ Haku’s long, slender fingers came to rest lightly against the wrapped hilt of his Kusanagi.

His expression remained perfectly, serenely calm, but the ambient temperature of the air around him plummeted, frost already beginning to creep along the bark of his chosen branch.

”You can come down,” the man wreathed in heat... Rōshi... said at last, his voice a low, steady rumble that carried through the mist with a quiet authority that did not require volume to be heard. As he lifted his gaze toward the dark canopy, his eyes, entirely ringed with an unnatural, pitch-black sclera, settled precisely on Haku’s concealed position. ”Or you can continue to politely pretend that we haven’t already found you.”

Haku tilted his head slightly, observing them for one final, measuring heartbeat.

Then, without a shred of resistance, he stepped forward into the empty air.

Gravity claimed him gently as he dropped from the high branch, his descent expertly controlled by micro-pulses of wind chakra. His teal form barely disturbed the swirling mist as he landed in the dead center of the clearing. His sandals touched the damp earth without producing a single sound, and as he straightened his spine, his dark eyes moved between the two titans with quiet, measured interest.

”...You sensed me,” Haku observed, his tone soft, almost conversational, though the predatory sharpness in his gaze belied the pleasantry. ”That is genuinely impressive. I had assumed my suppression was absolute.”

The armored man, Han, did not respond immediately.

Steam continued to bleed from the pressurized seams of his crimson armor as he took a single, deliberate step forward, the earth audibly compressing beneath his sheer, localized weight.

”Your kills,” Han stated at last, his voice filtered slightly through the heavy mask, giving the words a hollow, deeply mechanical edge, ”were not subtle enough.”

Haku’s lips curved into the faintest hint of an amused smile.

”I was under the distinct impression,” he replied smoothly, shifting his weight just enough to settle into a relaxed, perfectly balanced stance, ”that leaving no survivors qualified as being subtle.”

For a brief, suspended moment, the heavy silence of the forest stretched taut between them.

Then the second man... Rōshi... allowed a faint, almost appreciative exhale that sent a wave of dry heat washing across the clearing.

”Well, it is certainly efficient,” the lava-user murmured, crossing his arms as he studied the young, seemingly fragile boy with a calm, deeply thoughtful gaze. ”But a mountain of corpses is never invisible, child.”

Haku met his eyes directly. ”Well, I didn’t pile them up to a mountain, did I?”

’Black sclera... cracked, ashen skin...’ Haku analyzed, his brilliant mind instantly connecting the visual evidence to the forbidden jutsu his Sensei had warned him about.

His serene expression did not change, though the lethal intent behind it sharpened to a razor’s edge.

”...Edo Tensei,” Haku stated quietly, his tone feeling more like a clinical observation than a horrified accusation. ”That explains the absolute lack of caution in your approach. You do not fear death because you have already experienced it, and... well, you’re still dead.”

The monk-like man tilted his head slightly, studying the ice-user with calm, almost pitying eyes.

”You see clearly for one so young,” Rōshi acknowledged, his voice low and steady as he exhaled a thin stream of superheated air into the damp mist. ”Then you must understand exactly how this ends. You should not try so hard to resist, boy. Struggling against the immortal will only serve to make your death significantly more unpleasant.”

Haku’s expression remained perfectly unbothered. He drew the Kusanagi from its sheath with a soft, metallic whisper. ”...I politely disagree.”

”Let’s not converse for too long,” Han stepped forward. There would be no more words. There would be no more waiting. ”We still have things to do.”

They attacked first.

Both of them, at the exact same time.

The ground exploded into a nightmare of conflicting elements.

Rōshi’s foot pressed down, and the earth beneath him violently ruptured. A massive surge of molten chakra erupted outward in a wide, aggressive spread, a literal wave of liquid fire that immediately began devouring the moisture-rich terrain. Sizzling lava crawled across ancient roots and wet stone alike, turning the damp forest floor into a shifting, burning hazard that promised to melt bone on contact.

At that very same moment, Han’s heavily armored body compressed like a coiled spring.

Then, he released the pressure.

BOOM.

A catastrophic burst of highly pressurized steam shattered the air, propelling the giant across the clearing. He crossed the thirty-meter distance in a single, violently accelerated step that defied his immense bulk.

Haku moved.

Zero Friction activated instantly. A thin, near-invisible layer of perfect ice formed beneath his sandals as he slipped sideways, his body vanishing from the original trajectory of Han’s strike in less than a fraction of a heartbeat.

The armored fist tore through the empty space where Haku’s head had been just a microsecond prior.

The sheer, concussive shockwave of the missed punch alone snapped the branches of the trees behind Haku, splintering solid oak into matchsticks.

Haku didn’t retreat; his free hand flicked in a graceful, deadly arc.

”Ice Release: Ice Senbon.”

Dozens of hyper-compressed, diamond-hard needles formed instantly from the abundant moisture in the air. They materialized completely around Han from multiple blind angles as Haku twisted mid-motion, releasing them in a precise, unavoidable, and lethal spread designed to shred the man’s exposed joints.

Han didn’t even attempt to dodge.

He simply exhaled.

FSSSHHHHH.

Steam erupted outward from every vent in his crimson armor simultaneously.

The resulting pressure wave was so intensely violent that it distorted the air itself, generating a localized gale that physically knocked several of the senbon off their trajectory. The remaining needles struck cleanly, embedding deeply into the vulnerable gaps and seams of the armor.

They froze instantly upon contact, seeking to lock the giant’s limbs in a cage of unbreakable frost.

For half a second, the ice held.

Then, it cracked.

Han merely flexed his colossal, steam-powered muscles.

The ice shattered into a million glittering, harmless fragments, completely failing to halt his relentless advance.

And directly behind Haku’s evasion path...

”Lava Release: Molten Surge”

Rōshi’s voice remained hauntingly calm as his hands moved in a slow, deliberate, pushing motion.

The ground surged upward behind him.

A massive, towering wave of molten rock rose into the air and collapsed forward like a burning tide, seeking to consume everything in its path, turning the battlefield into an inescapable oven.

Haku’s eyes sharpened.

Zero Friction... he stepped onto absolutely nothing. Then, he stepped onto something.

Microscopic, perfectly angled layers of ice formed mid-motion beneath his foot in the empty air, granting him an impossible foothold where none existed.

He burst violently upward, launching himself into the sky and clearing the advancing tsunami of lava by several meters, though the punishing heat immediately followed him. The air burned his lungs, and the ambient moisture he relied upon thinned drastically as the water vapor flashed into steam.

Haku flipped gracefully at the apex of his jump, landing softly on a high, thick branch. He bent his knees, preparing to move again instantly.

But by the time he arrived at his destination, the steam-powered juggernaut was already there.

Han’s second strike came even faster than the first.

It was not a straightforward punch this time... no, it was a wide, sweeping, steam-propelled backhand that carried the horrifying combination of both crushing mass and hypersonic momentum.

With no room to evade the wide arc, Haku raised his blade, sliding his hand up the unsharpened back of the steel to brace it.

Wind chakra surged violently along the edge.

”Wind Style: Infusion.”

CLANG.

The collision rang out across the valley, a deafening, metallic shriek of steel meeting enhanced armor.

The Kusanagi held its structural integrity flawlessly, but the sheer, overwhelming kinetic force of the impact drove Haku backward. His body skidded violently along the length of the branch, his sandals carving deep gouges into the wood before he was forced to twist off the edge, flipping backward through the air and landing low, in a crouch, on the relatively safer earth.

A harsh, vibrating shock traveled up through his arms, his fingers tingling uncomfortably from the recoil.

”...Strong,” Haku whispered, his eyes narrowing as he evaluated the raw, physical output of the Five-Tails Jinchūriki.

Rōshi stepped forward again, the lava parting around his feet as if he were Moses parting the Red Sea.

”Strong?” Rōshi repeated, sounding almost amused, his gaze steady as the molten ground expanded further, denying Haku precious maneuvering space. ”You are facing the inevitable, child. You should stop measuring our strength and start accepting your fate.”

Haku didn’t respond with words. He answered with a jutsu.

He brought his hands together in a blindingly fast sequence.

”Ice Release: Ice Rain.”

The thick, lingering mist above them crystallized in an instant... and then, it fell.

Tens of thousands of ice needles rained downward, a torrential downpour of freezing death. Each shard was sharpened to lethal precision, saturating the entire battlefield in a dense, unavoidable barrage that turned the sky white.

Han surged forward directly through it.

Steam burst outward repeatedly from his armor, deflecting, melting, and breaking the falling needles as he advanced like a tank, his movement relentless, unbroken, and terrifyingly linear.

Rōshi did not even bother to move.

The ice struck his skin, but the moment the frozen shards touched him, they melted instantly, hissing as they turned into harmless clouds of steam against his molten chakra cloak.

The battlefield devolved into absolute chaos.

Thick steam, blinding mist, suffocating heat, and biting cold... they all collided violently, severely limiting visibility.

Utilizing the chaotic environment as an opportunity, Haku vanished into the haze.

Zero Friction activated once again, but this time, it wasn’t a simple, linear dash.

He layered it.

One step.

Then another.

Then another.

Each consecutive foothold formed from microscopic ice surfaces created mid-motion, allowing him to change direction at impossible, physics-defying angles. He ricocheted through the steam like a pinball, building speed until he was nothing more than a lethal, teal blur.

He appeared directly behind Rōshi, his blade drawn back for a surgical strike.

”Ice Fang.”

The Kusanagi pierced forward. Clean, precise... and absolute.

The blade drove smoothly through the side of Rōshi’s torso... and instantly, Haku unleashed his chakra.

Glacial ice spread outward from the wound, crystallizing rapidly across Rōshi’s body, encasing the Jinchūriki’s torso in a rapidly forming, unbreakable coffin of deep frost intended to paralyze the Edo Tensei’s movements.

For a brief, suspended moment, the ice held.

Then, it cracked.

Unimaginable heat surged from deep within the wound.

The ice coffin split apart violently as molten, red-hot chakra flooded outward from the Jinchūriki’s core, forcing Haku to abandon his sword temporarily and retreat instantly. His body slipped backward via Zero Friction just milliseconds before the eruption of localized lava consumed the space where he had stood.

”You are exceptionally skilled,” Rōshi said, turning slowly to face the retreating boy. His voice remained entirely unchanged, as though being impaled by a frozen sword had been nothing more than a mild inconvenience. The wound in his side hissed, paper-like ash swirling as the Edo Tensei immediately began to knit the flesh back together. ”But you are wasting your effort. Against something that does not die, something that does not end... what is the ultimate value of precision?”

Haku landed lightly on a patch of untouched earth, his breathing slightly heavier now, his chest rising and falling in a controlled rhythm.

”...Efficiency,” Haku stated simply, his voice devoid of despair. ”It’s kind of unfair, two reanimated Kage-level shinobis ganging up on a Jonin like me.”

Han attacked again. ”Nothing’s fair.”

This time, the armored giant didn’t aim to hit Haku directly. He aimed to break the very space Haku relied upon.

Steam exploded outward in a massive, omnidirectional radius, distorting the air so violently that the ambient moisture Haku used for his Zero Friction footholds began to violently destabilize and melt.

’Shit...!’
