Chapter 369: Chapter 368: The Ledger of Slaughter and the Final Mandate

The Land of Grass - Elemental Nations

”MOVE!”

A Konoha squad leader roared, his voice barely cutting through the deafening, atmospheric shriek of exploding tags as he violently shoved a younger chunin out of the path of a descending earthen spear.

”Konoha scum!” an Iwagakure shinobi screamed from the opposite ridge, his face smeared with mud and desperation as he slammed his hands against the blood-soaked soil, desperately attempting to mold another volley of rock projectiles.

”Damn, don’t approach that area!” another voice countered, instantly identifying the trap. ”Fall back to the tree line! Funnel their flank!”

BOOOOOOOOOOM.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM.

The earth itself seemed to groan under the relentless barrage, the usually vibrant, rolling plains of the Grass Country churned into a necrotic mire of mud, ash, and blood. Geysers of dirt and splintered wood erupted into the bruised sky as synchronized volleys of fire and lightning jutsu met desperately erected stone walls.

”Shit. Retreat! Fall back!”

It was a battlefield defined not by an equal clash of titans, but by a systematic, heavily financed dismantling.

The Iwagakure forces, historically renowned for their unbreakable defensive formations and sheer, stubborn endurance, were breaking. They were fighting a war of attrition they had already lost the moment the ink dried on Alaric Kenway’s budget proposals. They were exhausted, their supply lines ravaged, their rations severely depleted, and their morale plummeting with every hour that passed in the meat grinder of the borderlands.

In stark, terrifying contrast, the shinobi of Konohagakure operated with the flawless, relentless efficiency of a well-oiled machine. They wore pristine flak jackets, their weapon pouches overflowing with premium, newly forged kunai and high-grade explosive tags. They fought with the bottomless, terrifying vigor of men and women who were eating three hot, nutritionally dense meals a day in their forward camps. Whenever a Leaf shinobi fell or took a glancing hit, a dedicated medical detachment was there within seconds, utilizing overflowing reserves of medical supplies to knit flesh back together and return the soldier to the line.

The Iwa-nins were dying left and right, their monolithic earth constructs constantly overwhelmed by the sheer, unending volume of Konoha’s artillery and elemental assaults. It was not merely a battle; it was an industrial harvest of lives.

Konoha Forward Command Camp - Land of Grass

Several miles behind the bleeding front lines, heavily obscured by overlapping barrier seals and the dense, natural canopy of the forest, stood the operational heart of the invasion.

Inside the sprawling command tent, the atmosphere was a sharp departure from the chaotic butchery of the trenches. It was quiet, smelling of strong, black coffee, burning lantern oil, and the dry, metallic scent of fresh ink. The center of the room was dominated by a massive topographical map of the Grass and Waterfall borders, cluttered with hundreds of carved wooden markers representing battalions, supply routes, and enemy encampments.

Tsunade Senju, the Fifth Hokage, stood at the head of the table. She wore her green haori draped over her shoulders, her amber eyes burning with a fierce, uncompromising focus as she stared down at the board.

To her right stood Shikaku Nara, the master strategist of Konoha. His usual posture of lazy indifference was entirely absent, replaced by the sharp, calculating intensity of a grandmaster maneuvering pieces on a continental chessboard. To her left, sitting in a meditative trance with his fingers pressed firmly against his temples, was Inoichi Yamanaka, acting as the telepathic conduit between the central command and the dozens of team leaders currently engaged in the mud.

”The third division has successfully secured the western ridge,” Inoichi reported, his voice a low, steady monotone as he translated the mental feedback of a distant commander. ”Iwagakure’s right flank is collapsing. They are attempting to fall back to secondary trenches, but their chakra reserves are critically low. Our morale remains at peak capacity.”

”Keep pressing them,” Tsunade ordered, her voice carrying the unyielding iron of the Senju bloodline. ”Do not allow them the breathing room to establish a defensive perimeter. Keep the rotation of our squads tight; cycle the fatigued units to the rear for medical and rations, and push the fresh reserves forward. We must break their spirit before we break their lines.”

Shikaku nodded, his hands moving swiftly to adjust a cluster of red markers on the map, illustrating the tightening noose around the enemy forces. ”The logistical superiority is overwhelming them, Hokage-sama. With the continuous influx of supplies from the capital, we are essentially fighting a war without attrition on our side. It is unprecedented.”

Before Tsunade could reply, the heavy canvas flap of the command tent parted.

”Report!”

Everyone turned their heads toward the entrance. Standing there, looking entirely unbothered by the gravity of the war room, was Sai.

The pale, dark-haired teenager wore his standard midriff-baring uniform, his hands resting lightly at his sides. Though his expression remained locked in its usual, pleasantly blank smile, the subtle dust clinging to his boots and the faint smell of fresh ink radiating from his skin indicated he had traveled with immense haste. Tsunade and Shikaku had specifically assigned Sai to act as their primary, high-priority messenger for the northern fronts, utilizing his Super Beast Imitating Drawing jutsu to manifest massive, ink-born birds that bypassed the treacherous terrain entirely.

”Ah, Sai,” Tsunade acknowledged, her posture relaxing just a fraction. ”Approach.”

Sai walked smoothly toward the center of the tent. He reached into his utility pouch and retrieved a trio of tightly bound, wax-sealed scrolls, handing them directly to Shikaku Nara, who stood nearest to the entrance.

”Were there any notable movements or complications we should be aware of during your transit?” Tsunade asked, her eyes scanning the pale youth for any signs of engagement.

”No, Hokage-sama,” Sai answered, his polite smile never wavering as he delivered the intelligence. ”From my aerial vantage point, there were absolutely no enemy squadrons or irregular chakra signatures spotted on the route between the Waterfall border, Konoha, and this encampment. The skies were entirely clear.”

Tsunade gave a firm, satisfied nod of her head. ”Good work. Go get some food from the quartermaster and rest. I will send someone to fetch you if we require your aerial transport again.”

”Understood,” Sai nodded his head, offering a crisp, respectful bow before turning on his heel and exiting the tent, vanishing back into the busy camp outside.

Shikaku stepped closer to the lantern light, breaking the wax seal on the first scroll. He unfurled the parchment across the edge of the tactical map, his dark eyes scanning the neat, meticulous handwriting.

For a moment, the master strategist said nothing. He simply stared at the ink. Then, a slow, deeply incredulous smirk broke across his scarred face, accompanied by a soft scoff of absolute disbelief.

”Well,” Shikaku murmured, shaking his head as he looked up at the gathered commanders. ”It seems that Yuki Haku is definitively going to secure a place at the very top of the international Bingo Books before this war is even over.”

Tsunade, Inoichi, and the other attending strategists raised their brows in synchronized confusion.

”What do you mean?” Tsunade demanded, stepping closer to peer at the scroll. ”What did the boy do now?”

Shikaku looked down at the parchment again, making sure his tired eyes weren’t hallucinating the arithmetic.

”This is his official field report from the Land of Waterfalls,” Shikaku read aloud, his voice steady but laced with unmistakable awe. ”By the time Haku handed this scroll to Sai for delivery, he reported a confirmed, individualized kill count of exactly nine hundred and ninety-four hostile shinobi. Spanning from fresh Genin conscripts to veteran Jonin commanders.”

The command tent plunged into an absolute, suffocating silence.

Inoichi broke his telepathic concentration, his eyes snapping open in pure shock. Even Tsunade, a woman who had waded through the highest butcheries of the Second and Third Great Ninja Wars, felt her jaw slacken.

The war against Iwagakure had been officially active for less than a single week. In that infinitesimally short window of time, operating entirely as a solo unit behind enemy lines, a teenager had systematically, manually eradicated nearly a thousand trained soldiers. It defied the logistical realities of chakra exhaustion and physical stamina.

”Nearly a thousand men...” an older strategist whispered, wiping a bead of cold sweat from his brow. ”That isn’t combat. No... that is a natural disaster.”

Shikaku folded the scroll, his smirk settling into a grim, professional respect. ”Konoha has finally acquired a successor to the legend of the Kiiroi Senkō. The scale of the slaughter is practically identical to the Fourth Hokage’s feats, only this time, the battlefields are being left frozen instead.”

Shikaku turned to the Hokage, his tactical mind already weaponizing the raw data. ”Tsunade-sama, we need to aggressively promote this. We should leak the specific details of his kill count and push the moniker of the ’Ice Demon’ through our intelligence networks immediately. If we broadcast that a single Konoha operative is casually dismantling entire battalions in the north, it will strike absolute, paralyzing fear into the hearts of the Iwa forces here in the Grass. Psychological warfare of this magnitude will break their lines faster than any physical jutsu.”

As Shikaku spoke, he couldn’t help but marvel internally at the boy’s prowess. ’Haku’s feats may lack the instantaneous, flashing spectacle of Lord Minato’s teleportation...’ Shikaku thought, evaluating the sheer, horrifying efficiency of the ice-user. ’But it doesn’t mean it is in any way inferior. In fact, Haku is the only shinobi in a generation to even come close to matching Minato’s sheer volume of suppression in a theater of war.’

Tsunade’s shock melted into a sharp, triumphant smirk. She nodded her head decisively, fully endorsing the propaganda campaign. ”Do it. Let Ōnoki choke on the rumors of the monster dismantling his northern flank.”

She shifted her weight, crossing her arms over her chest. ”Now, are there any news regarding Alaric’s case? Is he still remained in the village, or has he mobilized?”

Shikaku nodded, reaching for the second scroll. ”This was the missive Sai received directly from Alaric-san before departing towards here.”

As Shikaku unrolled the second parchment, his brow furrowed in deep annoyance. He stared at the contents, flipping the scroll over to see if there was a secondary page attached. There wasn’t. The message was shockingly sparse, containing none of the detailed logistical updates or tactical formatting required of a high-ranking operative.

Tsunade noticed the hesitation. Her left eye gave a dangerous, familiar twitch. ”What does it say, Shikaku? Don’t tell me he just sent a drawing of a cigar.”

”It is... succinct,” Shikaku sighed heavily, rubbing the back of his neck before reading the text aloud.

”This is Jonin Alaric Jonathan Kenway. I’m done with Ame. I’ll come to the front lines in the Land of Grass soon. P.S. Make sure Team 7 stays in Konoha. I don’t care if Shikaku says otherwise.”

”...”

”...”

”That’s...” Tsunade began, her hands balling into tight fists as she struggled to maintain her professional composure. ”...profoundly, insultingly unprofessional.”

Shikaku could only offer a weary, commiserating sigh. The report was indeed a bureaucratic nightmare, completely devoid of decorum, tactical nuance, or basic respect for the chain of command. And yet, it was so perfectly, frustratingly Alaric. The man possessed a gravity that commanded the absolute respect of legendary Sannin and foreign Daimyos just by walking into a room, but his method of military reporting suggested he viewed the entire continent as a casual inconvenience.

However, beneath the irritation, Shikaku wasn’t genuinely bothered. The anomaly had completed his task, whatever esoteric, world-altering objective he had pursued in Amegakure. He got the job done, and he was coming to the front lines. That was the only variable that truly mattered.

”Well, his presence here will certainly expedite the conclusion of this conflict,” Shikaku deflected smoothly, picking up the third and final scroll, this one bearing the heavy, immaculate seal of the Fire Daimyo.

He broke the wax and unfurled the heavy parchment, his eyes widening marginally as he absorbed the royal decree.

”This is from the capital,” Shikaku announced, his voice raising to ensure every commander in the tent heard the gravity of the words. ”The Fire Daimyo, Kyū Madoka, has personally procured yet another massive budget for immediate financial support.”

Shikaku looked up, meeting Tsunade’s gaze with a look of profound, unshakeable confidence. ”The letter explicitly states that it does not matter what Konoha uses the capital for... be it munitions, infrastructure, or bounties. The Daimyo’s only mandate is that Konoha must win, completely and unconditionally, no matter the cost. He wishes to demonstrate to the world that the Fire Country’s financial backing is an insurmountable force.”

The atmosphere in the command tent shifted instantly. The lingering exhaustion of the campaign evaporated, replaced by the cold, electric thrill of an empire unleashed from its financial tethers.

Tsunade nodded her head, a slow, dangerous, and absolutely regal smile spreading across her face. She placed both hands flat upon the tactical map, leaning forward as the full weight of the Godaime Hokage descended upon the room.

”Then the strategy is finalized,” Tsunade declared, her voice ringing with absolute, lethal authority. ”Tomorrow evening, as the sun sets, we execute the final showdown. We will strike while the iron is blisteringly hot. We will collapse their center, shatter their flanks, and march directly upon their command structures.”

Her amber eyes swept across the faces of her finest strategists and commanders.

”We will finally end this war,” Tsunade promised, the Will of Fire burning brightly in the quiet tent. ”We will make Iwagakure surrender unconditionally. And if Ōnoki refuses to bow... then Iwa will simply cease to exist.”

The sheer, unforgiving seriousness carried in her tone resonated in the bones of every shinobi present.

They did not cheer. They did not shout. They simultaneously straightened their postures, rising to their full height. Each commander and strategist looked at their Hokage, their expressions hardening into masks of cold, professional lethality, and gave a single, unified nod of their heads.

Without another word, they turned and filed out of the command tent, dispersing into the night to prepare their battalions for the final, bloody march.
