Chapter 353: Chapter 352: The Echoes of Power and the Stone’s Despair

The Elemental Nations

Rumor is a winged creature, born in the hushed, secretive corners of ANBU barracks, only to mature rapidly into a beast that casts a long, terrifying shadow across the continent.

A single week had passed since the sparring match in Training Ground 5, but time in the shinobi world rarely moved at a steady pace when the balance of power was violently tipped. Despite the Third and Fifth Hokages’ strictest gag orders, absolute secrecy was an illusion when the combatants were legends. The craters left behind by the artificial Shinra Tensei, the lingering, oppressive density of nature energy, and the hushed awe of the elite spectators had inevitably leaked through the porous walls of the hidden village.

The news traveled along the invisible, labyrinthine networks of foreign spies embedded within the Fire Country. The ciphered messages they sent back to their respective Kage were practically vibrating with disbelief.

Jiraiya of the Sannin, utilizing a Sage Mode alongside the colossal summoning chief of Mount Myōboku, had been effortlessly dismantled. The architect of this defeat was not a coalition of armies, nor a resurrected demon from the warring states period. It was a single man. Jonin Alaric Jonathan Kenway... the enigmatic mentor of the globally feared ’Ice Devil,’ Haku Yuki.

To the civilian populace, the name meant little, but in the war rooms of the Great Five Nations, the intelligence struck with the force of a physical blow. Konohagakure had not merely recovered from the crippling losses of the Sand-Sound invasion; they had somehow birthed a new, utterly incomprehensible apex predator.

Because of this terrifying variable, the geopolitical atmosphere, already strained to the breaking point, fractured completely. The tension between Iwagakure and Konohagakure thickened from a simmer into a suffocating, boiling dread.

Iwagakure - The Tsuchikage’s Office

High amidst the jagged, unforgiving spires of the Village Hidden in the Stones, the Third Tsuchikage floated a few inches above his heavy stone chair, his ancient, aching spine protesting the mere concept of sitting.

Ōnoki of Both Scales gritted his teeth, the muscles of his jaw clenching so tightly they threatened to crack. In his weathered, heavily calloused hands rested a freshly deciphered intelligence scroll, smuggled out of the Fire Country just forty-eight hours prior.

He read the contents again, his dark eyes tracing the ink detailing the sheer, unadulterated scale of the devastation left in the wake of the blonde anomaly.

”Sandaime-sama, the latest report...”

Ōnoki looked up from the damning parchment, his fierce, stubborn gaze settling on the mountainous figure standing respectfully before his desk. It was Akatsuchi, his most loyal shield and trusted assistant, a man whose cheerful, wide-eyed demeanor frequently belied the lethal, crushing power he wielded for the village.

”Akatsuchi,” Ōnoki rasped, letting the scroll drop onto the polished stone surface of his desk. He crossed his arms, floating slightly higher to look his subordinate in the eye. ”Go ahead. Give me the logistical summary.”

Akatsuchi nodded his heavy head, letting out a soft, booming sigh that ruffled his dark hair.

”We have successfully deployed fifteen thousand shinobi to the multiple, pre-designated forward operating camps along our borders,” Akatsuchi reported, his voice a deep, resonant rumble in the cavernous office. ”Thanks to the emergency budget reallocations, they are all provided with high amounts of premium rations and medical supplies. Furthermore, despite the terrifying rumors leaking from the Land of Fire, they are all in incredibly high morale... largely because of the propaganda counter-measures you ordered us to distribute against Konoha.”

”Propaganda?” Ōnoki raised a bushy white brow, a cynical, grim smile touching his lips before he nodded his head in grim satisfaction. ”Ah, yes... that is good. Very good.”

He had ordered his intelligence division to flood the ranks with dismissive counter-narratives. They had painted the stories of Alaric Jonathan Kenway as a desperate, exaggerated fabrication cooked up by a financially crippled Konoha... a transparent psychological tactic meant to intimidate Iwagakure before a single kunai was thrown.

The irony tasted like ash in the Tsuchikage’s mouth.

Ōnoki knew better than anyone breathing that Konoha was not a village that needed to invent monsters. He had lived through the Third Great Ninja War. He carried the profound, humiliating scars of a time when a different, spiky-haired blonde had single-handedly decimated a thousand of his finest earth-benders in the blink of an eye. He could never forget the absolute shame he had been forced to swallow because of Minato Namikaze.

If Konoha’s spies allowed rumors of an anomaly dismantling a Sannin to leak, it wasn’t a bluff. It was a warning.

However, with the drums of war already beating and the pride of the Stone Village committed, he couldn’t afford a collapse in morale. He had to project an aura of unyielding, absolute strength, even if he privately suspected they were marching into a meat grinder.

”Tell me,” Ōnoki demanded, his voice dropping into a cold, conspiratorial register as he stared intently at his assistant. ”Have you made contact with them yet?”

Akatsuchi’s ever-present, jovial smile faded completely. He nodded his head, reaching into the folds of his crimson uniform to retrieve a small, heavily sealed black scroll. He stepped forward and placed it gingerly on the Tsuchikage’s desk.

”I met up with one of their intermediaries in the Rain Country borderlands,” Akatsuchi explained, his tone heavy with apprehension. ”They have agreed to the overarching terms of our engagement. However... they want three hundred million Ryo upfront in exchange for...”

Akatsuchi trailed off, swallowing hard, unwilling to speak the name of the mercenary organization aloud in the sanctity of the Kage’s office.

”Hmm... alright,” Ōnoki murmured, his eyes narrowing as he stared at the black scroll.

Three hundred million Ryo. It was an extortionate, staggering sum of money to hand over to a cabal of S-rank missing-nin. It was a deal struck in the deepest shadows, a pact with literal demons. But Ōnoki was a pragmatist. If this ’Akatsuki’ possessed the firepower to counter Konoha’s Jinchūriki, their Ice Devil, and the blonde anomaly currently threatening to rewrite the map, the price of their souls was irrelevant.

”...You go over there,” Ōnoki commanded, waving a weathered hand toward the door. His eyes were hard, utterly devoid of mercy or hesitation. ”Deliver the funds and finalize the contract.”

”Yes, Sandaime-sama,” Akatsuchi bowed deeply, understanding the horrific necessity of the errand, before turning and marching out of the office to secure their dark salvation.

—

The geography of the impending war was a brutal, unavoidable reality.

Because the Land of Grass lay sandwiched directly between the sprawling territories of the Fire Country and the Earth Country, it served as the natural, tragic choke point for any major military engagement, alongside the perpetually weeping borders of the Rain Country and the dense, forested valleys of the Waterfall Country.

In past wars, these minor nations had been relentlessly trampled, their lands scorched and their people starved as the Great Five fought their proxy battles over their homes.

But this time, the tactical approach of Konohagakure had fundamentally shifted.

Fueled by the limitless, staggering wealth recently injected into their war chest by the Fire Daimyo... a miracle secured entirely by Alaric... Tsunade had executed a masterstroke of preemptive diplomacy. Konoha had reached out to the hidden villages and minor civilian settlements within the Grass and Waterfall countries weeks in advance. Instead of demanding compliance through military threat, Konoha had offered an overwhelming abundance of premium, high-grade rations and medical supplies, essentially buying the unyielding goodwill of the buffer states.

Because of this humanitarian influx, the minor villages had willingly opened their borders, allowing Konoha’s vanguard battalions to smoothly and securely station their forward operating camps in the most tactically advantageous territories long before Iwa could even mobilize.

The Shinobi Council Chamber

The air inside the grand, circular meeting room of the Hokage Tower was thick with the scent of burning tobacco, old maps, and the electric, highly concentrated focus of the village’s absolute elite.

Countless high-level Jonin commanders lined the tiered seating. The distinguished heads of the noble clans... Hiashi Hyuga, Shibi Aburame, Chōza Akimichi, and Inoichi Yamanaka... sat in a crescent formation, their expressions carved from stone. At the head of the massive, central tactical table stood Tsunade Senju, flanked by her weary advisors.

And dictating the flow of the entire theater, effortlessly moving carved wooden blocks across the vast topographical maps, was the foremost strategic mind of a generation: Shikaku Nara.

The meeting had been raging for hours, dissecting supply lines, terrain bottlenecks, and enemy troop movements. Yet, an observant outsider might have noticed a glaring tactical anomaly: the absolute highest-ranking commanders, the elite assault squads, and the Clan Heads themselves were still firmly seated within the capital, rather than leading their respective battalions at the distant frontlines.

The reason for this unorthodox deployment delay was slouched comfortably on a plush sofa in the corner of the room, casually blowing smoke rings toward the ceiling.

Alaric Jonathan Kenway had boldly assured Tsunade and Shikaku that he had perfectly mastered the Hiraishin no Jutsu. Because of his limitless chakra and spatial mastery, Alaric had proposed acting as the ultimate, instantaneous logistical bridge. The generals and elite strike forces could remain in the safety of Konoha, coordinating the grand strategy in real-time with flawless intelligence, until the exact microsecond the Iwa forces engaged. Then, Alaric would simply teleport the command structure directly to their respective battlefields in a single, coordinated flash.

It was a logistical cheat code that completely broke the traditional arithmetic of warfare. Shikaku had nearly wept with joy when the tactical possibilities had been laid out before him.

Finally, as the golden light of the late afternoon sun began to bleed through the high windows, casting long shadows across the war table, Tsunade raised a hand.

”The deployments are finalized. The supply lines are secured,” Tsunade announced, her commanding voice echoing through the chamber. She looked around the room, meeting the determined eyes of her commanders. ”We hold our positions. We wait for Iwa to break the perimeter. Dismissed.”

A unified, respectful murmur of acknowledgment rippled through the room as the Jonin and Clan Heads began to file out, forming small, localized clusters to quietly debate their specific tactical assignments.

Alaric let out a loud, highly exaggerated yawn, stretching his long, heavily muscled arms above his head until his spine offered a satisfying, audible pop.

”Gods, military logistics are tedious,” Alaric muttered to himself, crushing the remaining stub of his cigar into a nearby crystal ashtray. He pushed himself off the sofa, adjusting the collar of his olive-green flak jacket as he moved with a lazy, unhurried gait toward the heavy double doors of the Council Room.

He fully intended to teleport back to the compound, eager to see if Haku had managed to successfully deconstruct the Reaper Death Seal yet, or perhaps check in on the quiet, domestic life of the resurrected Hokage and his wife.

But before he could cross the threshold and step out into the corridor, a figure stepped smoothly into his path, blocking the exit with an aura of impeccable, rigid discipline.

Alaric paused, raising a platinum-blonde brow.

Standing before him, his immaculate, traditional robes flowing seamlessly around his rigid posture, was the head of the Hyuga Clan.

”Kenway-dono...” Hiashi Hyuga spoke, his voice a low, perfectly controlled baritone that carried a weight of immense, unspoken gravity.

Hiashi stared directly at Alaric. He did not offer a polite, deferential smile... the Hyuga patriarch rarely smiled at anyone outside his immediate bloodline... but there was a profound, unmistakable gleam of absolute respect residing within his pale, featureless eyes.

”I would like to borrow some of your time,” Hiashi requested, bowing his head in a shallow, perfectly measured gesture of formal diplomacy.
