Chapter 389: Chapter 388: The Frost’s Passage and the Master’s Denial

The Land of Grass - Elemental Nations

Haku excised the very concept of physical resistance from the world around him.

Cutting through the towering, emerald sea of the Grass Country, Yuki Haku moved with a velocity that defied the mechanical limits of the human body. With every single step he took, a microscopic, flawless layer of diamond-hard ice bloomed into existence beneath his sandals, granting him a frictionless foothold in the empty air before instantly sublimating back into vapor. Even to the highly trained, chakra-enhanced eyes of elite shinobi, he was nothing more than a passing phantom... a sudden, biting drop in atmospheric temperature and a fleeting blur of teal fabric that vanished before the mind could register its presence.

He had left the butchered, frozen battlefields of the Land of Waterfalls hours ago, his primary objective complete. Now, he was a homing missile aimed directly at the Konoha war camp.

As he bounded seamlessly over a wide, rushing river, his passive sensory network rippled with sudden information.

Pressing into the absolute periphery of his expanded range were multiple distinct chakra signatures. Haku didn’t break his stride, but his dark eyes narrowed in rapid analysis as he sifted through the energetic frequencies. The signatures were disciplined, moving in a tight, defensive arrowhead formation through the upper canopy, and more importantly, they carried a specific, deeply familiar resonance.

They were Konoha shinobi.

Haku instinctively bled off a fraction of his kinetic momentum, his impossible speed decelerating smoothly as he transitioned from frictionless air-stepping to leaping gracefully across the thick, moss-draped branches of the ancient oaks. As he closed the distance, visually confirming the glint of the sunlight catching the leaf insignia etched into their forehead protectors, his focus zeroed in on the squad’s point woman.

Her chakra signature was a volatile, chaotic coil of lethal intent that Haku recognized from his brief, peripheral encounters within the village.

’Oh?’ Haku mused silently, his footfalls making absolutely no sound against the bark as he adjusted his trajectory to perfectly parallel theirs. ’Mitarashi-san?’

He decided it was best not to startle a squad of highly strung vanguards by simply blowing past them at Mach speed. Slipping effortlessly into the blind spot of their formation, Haku matched their bounding rhythm perfectly, becoming a silent shadow moving alongside them through the dense foliage.

”Excuse me.”

The polite, melodic request drifted seamlessly into the rushing wind, sounding as calm as if he had just asked for directions in a quiet tea shop.

”Huh?”

The reaction was instantaneous and explosive. The entire Konoha squad gasped in synchronized shock, their heads snapping violently toward the source of the voice. Anko Mitarashi, the usually unflappable Special Jonin, mirrored their profound surprise, her brown eyes widening to comical proportions as she recognized the serene, teal-clad boy matching her pace mid-air.

Entirely derailed by the sudden infiltration of their perimeter, the squad came to an abrupt, uncoordinated halt, dropping heavily onto various branches and reaching instinctively for their weapons.

”Haku!?” Anko demanded, stabilizing herself on a thick bough, her trench coat fluttering as she glared across the ten-foot gap separating them. ”What in the hell are you doing creeping up on us out here?”

Haku landed lightly on a neighboring branch, his posture impeccable as he offered a small, deferential bow of his head. ”I was officially ordered by the Hokage to relocate to the primary war camp here in the Land of Grass,” he replied smoothly, his voice devoid of any exertion. ”My directive in the Land of Waterfalls has been fully concluded.”

Anko stared at him for a split second, her calculating mind processing the impossible speed and silence of his approach, before she offered a slow, validating nod.

And then, she threw a kunai directly at his face.

The heavy steel blade shrieked through the air with lethal velocity, a test of reflexes born purely from the paranoid instincts of a former snake’s apprentice.

Haku merely raised a brow. Without shifting his stance or breaking eye contact, his slender hand snapped up, catching the ringed pommel of the kunai mere inches from his nose with effortless, sickening precision.

”Was that entirely necessary, Mitarashi-san?” Haku asked, his tone polite but laced with a faint, disappointed sigh.

Anko didn’t answer with words. A fierce, predatory grin stretched across her lips as she aggressively pushed off the branch, dashing straight toward him with her hand thrust forward.

”Striking Shadow Snakes!”

From the wide sleeves of her trench coat, a thick, writhing mass of thick-scaled vipers erupted outward, their jaws unhinged and fangs bared as they shot through the air, desperate to sink their venom into his flesh.

Haku did not draw his sword, nor did he retreat. He simply held his right hand up, his palm facing the incoming swarm.

The moment the leading vipers made physical contact with his skin, Anko’s confident grin shattered into wide-eyed shock. A wave of absolute, sub-zero chakra pulsed violently from Haku’s palm, flash-freezing the serpents instantly. The living weapons were encased in a thick, jagged block of diamond-hard ice mid-strike, dropping heavily to the forest floor below like shattered glass sculptures.

Surprise morphed immediately into fierce, competitive irritation. Anko didn’t halt her charge; she bit her thumb, smearing a line of blood across her forearm to escalate the assault.

”Multiple Striking Shadow Snakes!”

This time, the eruption was a tidal wave of scaled death. A massive, overwhelming horde of monstrous serpents poured from her sleeves, blackening the air between them as they converged on the ice-user from every conceivable angle.

Haku could only release a long, deeply exasperated sigh.

He didn’t even bother to raise both hands. With a flick of his wrist, his fingers blurred into a single, solitary hand seal. He parted his lips slightly, blowing a soft, highly concentrated breath of freezing air toward the approaching swarm.

It was not a roaring blizzard, but a precise, absolute command of his element. The breath of winter washed over the serpents, the temperature plummeting so drastically that the very moisture in the air crystallized. Like the first wave, the entire, massive swarm was frozen solid in less than a second, transformed into a magnificent, suspended chandelier of thick, heavy ice that clattered harmlessly against the branches.

Anko dug the heels of her boots into the bark, sliding to a grinding halt as she stared at the frozen remnants of her ultimate barrage. She stood there, her fists clenched at her sides.

”Tch,” Anko clicked her tongue, the sharp sound echoing her profound annoyance at being so effortlessly neutralized.

”I guess you’ve successfully confirmed if I’m the real Haku or an enemy imposter,” Haku smiled awkwardly, raising both of his hands in a placating, deeply friendly gesture. ”I don’t know about your second jutsu, though... escalating to the multiple snake variant felt a little bit personal.”

Anko crossed her arms tightly over her chest, offering him a salty, unabashed smirk as she shook her head.

”It feels kind of infuriating, watching one of your best jutsus being canceled out instantly without the guy even breaking a sweat,” Anko admitted, her tone carrying a grudging, veteran respect. ”So yeah, it got a little personal there for a second.”

Haku could only chuckle at her brutal honesty, dropping his hands to his sides as the tension finally bled out of the canopy.

”Well, since we’re done with the impromptu spar,” Haku suggested, gesturing politely toward the western horizon, ”how about we travel toward the war camp together, yes?”

Anko stared at the serene, devastatingly handsome youth for a long moment, slowly nodding her head as a wicked, playful glint returned to her brown eyes.

”You know, you’re quite handsome when you aren’t freezing things to death,” Anko purred, leaning forward slightly to offer him a highly suggestive, flirtatious grin. ”How about you skip the war camp for a bit and have a date with little ol’ me?”

Haku’s polite smile faltered into a distinctly wry, uncomfortable expression, his impeccable composure cracking against the sudden, brazen proposition.

”No thanks, Mitarashi-san,” Haku declined smoothly, stepping back slightly to maintain his personal space. ”I... already have someone in mind.”

”Oh!” Anko’s eyes widened with genuine, delighted surprise, completely ignoring the rejection as her grin stretched ear-to-ear. ”The legendary Ice Demon actually has someone he likes, huh? Come on, spill it! Would you tell your nee-chan who that lucky person would be? I could help you set it up, you know!”

The wry smile remained plastered on Haku’s face as he reached up, awkwardly scratching the back of his head under the intense, prying interrogation of the older kunoichi.

”Well...” Haku murmured, his dark eyes shifting frantically for an escape route before he offered a crisp, sudden nod. ”...bye!”

Before Anko could even draw a breath to protest, Haku violently activated his Zero Friction.

He didn’t leap; he simply vanished from the branch, becoming an untraceable streak of teal light that slipped cleanly past her perimeter and disappeared into the deep forest, leaving a faint, glittering trail of frost in his wake.

Anko stood on the branch, staring at the empty space where the anomaly’s student had been, before letting out a loud, highly amused ”tsk” as she shook her head.

Konoha Forward Command Camp - Land of Grass

It was precisely nine in the morning, and the sprawling expanse of the Konoha war camp was humming with the quiet, orderly rhythm of an army catching its breath.

Alaric Jonathan Kenway sat comfortably on a conjured wooden stool near the perimeter of the command tents, the morning sun warming the broad expanse of his shoulders. He held a delicate porcelain cup of steaming green tea in one hand, while the fingers of his other hand casually balanced a premium, golden-banded cigar.

He took a slow, appreciative sip of the tea, his piercing blue eyes sweeping over the encampment.

Around him, dozens of shinobi were engaged in their morning routines. Some were executing light, synchronized taijutsu drills to keep their blood flowing, while others sat clustered around small fires, nursing cups of bitter coffee or quietly chewing through their high-calorie field rations. Notably, the camp was entirely devoid of the agonizing groans and bloody triage tents that usually defined a frontline fortification. Tsunade and her elite detachment of medical shinobi had moved with such terrifying, unyielding efficiency throughout the night that every single wounded soldier had been rapidly stabilized, healed, and returned to fighting condition.

Alaric raised a platinum-blonde brow, his gaze drifting away from the practicing squads to stare intently toward the dense, misty treeline to the east.

He sat perfectly still, holding the teacup near his lips. Ten seconds passed. Then fifteen.

At exactly twenty seconds, a slow, predatory smirk curved his lips. Without spilling a single drop of his tea, Alaric tilted his head exactly one inch to the right.

Thwip.

A hyper-compressed, diamond-hard ice senbon shrieked through the empty space where the back of his skull had been a microsecond prior, burying itself completely to the hilt in the thick wooden support pole of the tent behind him.

”You’re getting better, Haku,” Alaric praised lightly, taking a smooth, unbothered drag from his cigar as he exhaled a plume of grey smoke into the crisp air.

A heavy, exasperated sigh echoed from a couple of meters behind him.

Haku stepped out of the morning mist, walking casually toward his mentor. Because his approach via Zero Friction had been entirely soundless, the sudden, violent materialization of the Ice Demon in the middle of the camp sent a profound shockwave of alarm through the nearby shinobi. Several practicing Jonin flinched, their hands flying to their weapon pouches, completely stunned by how a man could simply appear within their heavily warded perimeter without triggering a single sensory alarm.

Alaric paid the surrounding panic absolutely no mind. He brought the teacup to his lips, draining the last, lukewarm sip of his drink, before crushing the ember of his cigar against his thumb and sealing the stub away.

He pushed himself up from the wooden stool, turning around to face his student with a bright, welcoming smile.

His electric-blue eyes immediately locked onto Haku, evaluating the subtle, almost imperceptible shifts in the boy’s spiritual pressure. While the physical appearance of the teen was immaculate, his chakra was different. It didn’t just feel larger; it felt undeniably heavier, possessing the cold, terrifying refinement of a blade that had been endlessly quenched in blood.

”The experience of personally burying a thousand shinobi must’ve helped a ton, huh?” Alaric noted, his voice carrying a proud, analytical warmth. ”I noticed how your chakra feels significantly more refined, despite your reserves expanding considerably since I left you two years ago.”

Haku offered a polite, deeply respectful nod, a small smile touching his lips as he halted before his master.

”It has, Sensei,” Haku admitted, his tone calm and grounded in reality. ”However, now that I have finally reached this level of proficiency, and I stand here looking at you... I am slowly realizing just how unfathomably massive the difference between my own power and yours truly is.”

Alaric merely chuckled, waving a large, calloused hand to dismiss the boy’s humble comparison.

”That’s not important right now, kid. There is always a bigger fish, or in my case, a very stubborn, immortal architect,” Alaric said, stepping forward to place a heavy, reassuring hand onto Haku’s shoulder. His expression sobered, shifting from casual mentor to battlefield commander. ”What’s important right now is that you go to the quartermaster, find a cot, and get some absolute rest. Because when the sun hits its peak today, you will be the one facing an incredibly enraged Ōnoki.”

Haku’s dark eyes widened by a fraction of a millimeter. He looked at the heavy hand resting on his shoulder, his brilliant tactical mind rapidly processing the sheer, apocalyptic scale of engaging a reigning Kage who wielded molecular-dismantling Particle Style.

”Sensei,” Haku began, raising a deeply curious brow as he looked up into Alaric’s unyielding blue eyes. ”If I am genuinely expected to fight the Tsuchikage in a few hours... shouldn’t you perhaps heal my lingering fatigue? Or, at the very least, utilize that grand, reality-bending Fuinjutsu you are so immensely proud of to put my body into its absolute, peak state before the battle?”

Alaric paused. He stared at his student, letting a profound, contemplative hum vibrate in his chest as if he were deeply weighing the ethical and tactical merits of providing his disciple with a god-tier buff.

He took his time, reaching into the deep pocket of his flak jacket with agonizing slowness. He bypassed his premium Celestial Cigars, deliberately retrieving a cheap, slightly wrinkled local cigar he had purchased from a Konoha street vendor three years prior. He placed it between his lips, snapping his fingers to ignite the brittle tobacco.

He exhaled a thin, acrid cloud of cheap smoke, offering Haku a flat, utterly merciless smirk.

”...Nah.”
