Chapter 345: Still a Security Guard

When Lin Zifeng sauntered into Zhang Xixi’s office in the Finance Department with a laid-back swagger, he saw several staff members distributing salaries to mid-level employees. Lin Zifeng glanced around and noticed that his salary wasn’t being handed out among the others but was to be given in Zhang Xixi’s office. This piqued his interest. He touched his nose, realizing his status had indeed improved significantly. In the past, he would have just picked up his salary and left,

but now, with his elevated status, collecting his salary was no longer a matter of indifference and had to be handed over personally by Zhang Xixi.

After knocking three times, Lin Zifeng strode into Zhang Xixi’s office. He saw her with her long hair down, wearing black-framed glasses, scrutinizing a document meticulously. Lin Zifeng did not disturb her but found an empty seat, sat down, and quietly waited for her to finish her work.

”You’re here?” As soon as Lin Zifeng stepped into the office, Zhang Xixi looked up at him.

It was as if she had had him in her sights all along.

”Hmm,” Lin Zifeng nodded.

This was the first time he had experienced receiving a salary at Tianyu Group. And, to be honest, having it handed out by Zhang Xixi gave him a surprisingly privileged feeling.

”Here’s your salary for this month, totaling three thousand six hundred and eighty. After deducting last month’s attendance, that’s all there is. Count it,” Zhang Xixi passed him a salary envelope and placed it on the desk.

”Three thousand six hundred eighty?” Lin Zifeng felt a tiny surge of excitement.

”Hmm, if you work a bit harder, it could definitely be more than this,” Zhang Xixi slightly frowned, mistaking Lin Zifeng’s wide eyes as a sign of dissatisfaction.

Wow, isn’t this salary a bit too generous? Considering the few days he actually worked, plus all the leaves of absence, either skipping work or just loafing around, and still getting paid this much?

”It’s enough, more than enough. I’m quite satisfied with this salary,”

Lin Zifeng laughed.

”If you devote your full energy to work, I believe you could easily make over ten thousand this month,” said Zhang Xixi calmly.

”Let’s forget about ten thousand. I’m not greedy. As long as I have enough to eat and drink, that’s enough for me. Why earn so much money? What’s brought to life can’t be taken in death.” He never cared much about the amount of money. As long as he was doing alright, had cigarettes to smoke, had food to eat, and a little money to spend on drinks, that was enough for him.

Zhang Xixi, rendered speechless by Lin Zifeng’s words, just briefly glanced at him, saying nothing, though her gaze was complex and lingered on him for a while before she spoke, ”I heard you have a wife?”

Smoking at the time, Lin Zifeng was almost scared to death by her sudden question.

He choked on the cigarette smoke filling his throat.

”Why ask that?” Lin Zifeng was puzzled too, as Zhang Xixi seemed a bit different today. He had never mentioned his marital status to her, so why would she suddenly bring it up today?

”Oh, don’t get me wrong, I was just wondering since you seem to be having such an easy time at the office, whether you were single or not.”

”I am married, yes, but my wife doesn’t need my support. She earns perhaps more than I could in ten lifetimes.” He spoke the truth; considering Nangong Bing’s business acumen in Zhonghai City, her daily income probably surpassed what he could make in ten years.

”You, you really have a wife?” Zhang Xixi suddenly looked up from where she was bowed, fixing him with an intense gaze.

”Yeah,” Lin Zifeng nodded while continuing to smoke, his head bowed, counting the salary he had just received. Strangely, this was the first time he ever savored the feeling of receiving a salary, having never experienced it before. He hadn’t realized receiving a salary could stir such emotions.

”When, when did this all happen?” Zhang Xixi, evidently very curious, looked on sadly for a few seconds before her calm demeanor gradually returned.

”The deal with my wife has been almost a year in the making. I did not have the chance to tell you before, but since you all seem to know already, I felt lazy to deny it today. After all, we are colleagues, and Xixi, you are my immediate superior. I couldn’t deceive you, heh heh.”

Lin Zifeng unintentionally caught the fleeting complex expression in Zhang Xixi’s eyes. Right now, he really did not want to delve into lengthy romantic stories. He had much to take care of and couldn’t afford to spend his time on several women’s feelings.

The family’s matriarch was already enough to handle at home. In the office, Mu Yang, being such an elf, was troubling enough, not to mention Huahua and Liu Tangtang. Now, even coming to work, Zhang Xixi exhibited a relentless curiosity.

”Oh,” Zhang Xixi nodded somewhat disappointedly, then casually picked up a document clip from the desk, pretending to look at it as a way to mask her embarrassment.

However, Lin Zifeng didn’t point it out. Instead, he smiled with his salary in hand and ran outside with a cigarette in his mouth.

Under the envious eyes of many staff members in the Finance Department, everyone wanted to know just how much money this new assistant, who worked intermittently, could earn. To their surprise, Lin Zifeng came out with a big bag of bulging cash.

The more cynical and jealous ones silently cursed and stomped their feet, furious about the situation. Why could someone who hung around the gambling department every day make thousands each month, while they, who bent their heads calculating daily, earned just a few drops of oil? What kind of world was this, where one had to rely on connections to climb the ladder?

Of course, it was indeed a miracle that someone like Lin Zifeng, who loafed around, still stayed at Tianyu Group. But then again, with such a strong backer, even if he did nothing but eat and drink here, probably no one would care to intervene.

Just then, as Lin Zifeng was heading to his office after getting his salary, he bumped into Director Wu, who had last harassed him in Zhang Xixi’s office.

So many days had passed, and this old guy really had the energy, coming over every few days with his thick arms and legs.

”Well, look who’s here, Director Wu? What brings you here in such high spirits today?” Lin Zifeng blocked the entrance with a grin at the portly man.

And his words carried a slight hint of mockery.

”None of your business, I’m here for Xixi,” Director Wu said coldly, seemingly not wanting to provoke this troublemaker.

”Oh come on, after all, Xixi is my immediate superior. Since you’re here to see her, should I inform her for you? After all, as a high-ranking member of Tianyu, you should at least make your presence felt, right?”

”Are you telling me you have nothing better to do after eating?” Director Wu, already annoyed, would have kicked him out of Personnel if it hadn’t been for his rumored connections with President Nangong.

”Er, now, Director Wu, that’s not quite the right thing to say. As an assistant director, of course I should share the workload. You’ve been bustling in and out of the director’s office so frequently, I’m worried our Director Zhang might not be used to it. Of course, you, Director Wu, are a face and name in the company, anything you do, everyone rushes to praise. But, if I were to share this diligent gossip with President Nangong herself, who knows what she might think? You know, she really hates people messing around in the company. With you sneaking here so often, she must be very annoyed, don’t you think, Director Wu?”

Lin Zifeng said with a chilly smile.

”You! You’re ruthless!” Director Wu’s face turned purple in between the moments of green and white. He pointed at Lin Zifeng’s nose, seemingly scared, clenched his swollen face, said nothing, and turned his head towards the Finance Department’s exit.

Watching Director Wu’s mottled face, Lin Zifeng felt an unpleasant satisfaction in his heart. Thinking about it, this Wu bastard, even if he wanted to pursue Zhang Xixi, didn’t have to use bureaucratic tactics to oppress people.

Pursuing a girl is fair game, and Lin Zifeng had no right to interfere, but using one’s status to oppress others always seemed a bit off.

Lin Zifeng didn’t see himself as some kind of justice-enforcing savior, but since this affair unfolded right before his eyes, he felt it was his duty to act as her knight in shining armor.

He definitely didn’t want a fine head of cabbage to be spoiled by a pig.

Director Wu was as detestable as one could get, whether in character or looks, definitely not someone Lin Zifeng had any hope for.

Who knows how many girls this guy had harassed within the company.

Back in his own office, Lin Zifeng suddenly realized an issue.

His office was right outside Zhang Xixi’s, meaning anyone who wanted to enter her office had to pass through his doorway; basically, he became Zhang Xixi’s bodyguard?

Assistant, assistant?

It was just an upgraded bodyguard, no matter how you looked at it, he was ultimately just a security guard, albeit under a different title.

Spending his days doing nothing but watching the door, he seemed to have become Zhang Xixi’s entry guard.

Goodness, what was Nangong Bing really planning?

Moving him around only to make him a security guard in the end.

Damn it. Since he returned to the country, he had been revolving around this woman, from bodyguard to security guard, then from security guard to caretaker, and still connected with the word ’guard’.

It seemed this frugal wife of his was not as simple as he had imagined.
