Chapter 333: Massive Turnaround

”Hehe, do you know how much you’re going to bet later, brother?” the man with glasses asked.

”What do you mean how much?”

”The boxing match, of course! There’s a main event tonight. Just follow my lead and place your bet, brother. I guarantee you’ll make a killing.”

Lin Zifeng had sensed something off about the guy from the start, and now he realized he was being hustled right down to his ancestors.

”So, what do you want me to do?” Lin Zifeng took out a cigarette and looked at the man with glasses with a half-smile.

”Well, how about this. I think you’re a decent young man, so I’ll help you out today. Give me two thousand, and I’ll place your bet for you. Then, when it’s time to divide the winnings, if you still remember my kindness, just give me enough for a pack of cigarettes.”

”The money’s not a big issue, but I need to know if you can guarantee that I’ll win?” Lin Zifeng asked. His question was logical; after all, who would do something without the prospect of a reward?

”Er, that’s not a problem,” the man with glasses was taken aback, but then he agreed readily. Patting Lin Zifeng’s shoulder, he said with a smile, ”Just enjoy yourself for now. You can give me the money when the main fight’s about to start.”

Lin Zifeng just nodded and ignored him.

Looking around at the restless crowd, Lin Zifeng found a seat and sat down. Soon a young model wearing very little served him a tray of champagne flutes and asked him in fluent English, ”What would you like, sir?”

Lin Zifeng merely glanced at her without giving her scantily clad appearance a second look. He picked up a Martini, raised it to the model in a toast, and handed her five hundred without further ado, then turned his attention back to the thrilling performance in the arena.

When the two bare-knuckled warriors reached the climax of their battle, the whole place erupted. A muscular man in the ring delivered a vicious elbow strike, and his opponent failed to dodge. A savage elbow blow sent blood spurting wildly, contorting the face into a grisly expression as blood covered the entire visage.

It seemed as though the muscular man felt some reluctance to harm his opponent further, but under the wild shouts from the second floor spectators, he seemed to waver.

”Kill him! Kill him! Kill him!...”

Crowds on the second and third floors cheered in unison, urging the brawny man to finish his foe. With thousands of voices calling for blood, the atmosphere grew uncontrollable, especially among those clutching their betting tickets, all staring wide-eyed, wanting the man to deliver a death blow to win their bets and their money.

The muscular man was from Huaxia, and his bloodied opponent who lay on the ground was an American boxer. However, the latter’s face was now mangled beyond recognition, like a burst bun, dripping with blood.

The muscular Huaxian was panting heavily, bowing his head, unwilling to deliver the coup de grâce. Today was his son’s birthday, and with the family living in poverty since moving to the city from the countryside and unable to find decent work, the man had come here to try his luck. He only wanted to buy his son a new set of clothes and a cake he had always longed for. Now that he was almost winning, he seemed reluctant to strike. People that died in places like these were of no concern, but what could anyone do to help him once he left?

”What are you fucking waiting for? Kill him! Damn it. Just do it!” Some agitated spectators in the stands suddenly got worked up. They had bet thousands today, not just for the thrill of an exciting boxing match but also to win some money.

”Yes! Get on with it! I spent so much money betting on you to win, don’t you screw this up.” Another heavily made-up woman was applying lipstick exclaiming along with the crowd.

The burly man seemed to ignore these uncultured ruffians and instead glanced over at the other side of the spectator stands.

There, a young boy not much older, clutching the lollipop his father had bought him in the afternoon, was watching the dueling arena, where his father was covered in blood, with apprehension. Although he was not very old, his tender face had already turned somewhat red with anxiety. Wearing the mini suit his father had bought him today, he was murmuring, ”Dad, Dad, please stop fighting. Let’s go home.” The corners of the boy’s eyes were moist, but he felt powerless and could only watch as his father remained in a standoff in the duel arena.

Clenching his fists tightly, the man was clearly in agony. The person in charge here had told him today was just a bit of fun, but he could see what the situation had become. If he didn’t kill his opponent, his own outcome today would be terribly grim. But if he did kill his opponent, how could his conscience bear it? Moreover, killing someone would create panic within him; he didn’t want his son to witness him committing murder with such hatred.

Just as the burly man was stunned in that moment, the American he had knocked down suddenly sprang up!

With his strong shoulders, he rammed up under the man’s armpit, hitting him hard on the chin.

”Ugh!”

”Bang!” The man was sent flying with a sudden blow, his chin gushing blood uncontrollably.

Smashing hard to the ground, the American seemed relentless, mounting the burly man after knocking him down and then launched a barrage of vicious punches directly at the man’s head.

Smack smack smack!

After several blows, the man’s nasal bone cracked under the ruthless barrage, and blood covered his face. Biting down on his teeth, he wrapped his arms around his head to protect himself from fatal damage, but the American was overpowering, with the angle and force of the surprise attack perfectly executed, his dominating offensive pinned the burly man to the ground, leaving him unable to retaliate.

To everyone’s surprise, the sudden turn of events went against what the entire audience had expected. Some spectators holding gambling tickets started to get unhappy, throwing their tickets at the American, while others were overjoyed, having thought they were about to lose but now seeing a stunning reversal, exciting everyone immensely.

”Beat him to death! Just squash him! Later, I’ll tip you well!” The scene became chaotic once more as both sides’ betting parties began cursing each other.

Meanwhile, in the luxurious spectator seats on the third floor, Qiao Bu’en was watching the scene with satisfaction, sneering at an elder beside him, ”What do you think, Mr. Li? Is the match to your liking?”

The elder, Mr. Li, was one of Dragon City’s wealthy businessmen and had made a special trip just to witness the boxing match Qiao Bu’en had told him about.

Mr. Li was holding a cigar, roasting it over a lighter, then nonchalantly said, ”Qiao, you didn’t invite me over just to watch some petty show, did you?”

Qiao Bu’en took a drag of his cigarette, paused, and then chuckled, ”Mr. Li, don’t be so hasty. The real show is about to start,” saying so, he signaled to a lackey behind him, who evidently got the message and discreetly left.
