After rejecting my celebrity husband

Chapter 661: Chapter 665: The Break 【1】

Xu Pei did as she was told, got up, and closed all the doors to the inner room of the ward and the small hall. She returned to the bedside, lifted the fruit basket, and asked, ”What fruit would you like to eat? Shall I peel it for you?”

”My kidneys aren’t good, and Yizhou told me to eat less sweet food these days.” Leng Lin gestured toward the chair beside the bed with his chin, ”Sit down, Pei girl.”

Xu Pei felt nervous without reason, as Leng Lin’s expression was serious, ”Why do you look like you’re interrogating a criminal with that expression?”

Her remark was meant as a jest, but Leng Lin did not smile.

”Do you feel guilty?”

”Guilty?” Xu Pei laughed it off, ”What would I feel guilty about?”

Leng Lin sat on the hospital bed, looking at her calmly, ”I remember the first time I met Xiao Qian, I asked her a similar question. At that time, she only replied with one sentence, ’Only those with a guilty conscience will feel guilty.’”

Xu Pei adjusted the blanket for him, ”Listen to yourself. Are you implying I have a guilty conscience?”

”Pei girl,” Leng Lin said earnestly, ”In truth, no one is a saint. Everyone makes mistakes, but what’s most important is whether you know to repent after doing something wrong.”

Xu Pei’s expression stiffened, ”Uncle Leng, I don’t understand what you’re saying.”

”You’re a smart person, and I know you understand.” Leng Lin reached out, gently covering the hand that she had placed on the hospital bed, ”Listen to Uncle’s advice, apologize to Xiao Qian and Zimo properly. Xiao Qian is not the type to bear grudges, and although Zimo has a bad temper, you know he’s cold on the outside but warm on the inside. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have tolerated you up to this point. As long as you offer a sincere apology, they will surely forgive you.”

Xu Pei abruptly withdrew her hand from his, ”What did I do wrong? Why should I apologize to them?”

”Xu Pei!” Leng Lin’s expression darkened slightly, ”Even now, you still won’t admit it? If you don’t want others to know what you’ve done, then don’t do it at all. Do you really think that what you have done is flawless?”

There was anger in his tone, but more than that, there was a feeling of being intensely disappointed.

He had always admired Xu Pei.

Her cleverness, her capability... he had watched her struggle and toil through the years with both appreciation and affection.

This girl wasn’t his own daughter, but she was better than a daughter to him.

He doted on her, protected her. At first, perhaps because of the guilt he felt inside, but in the end, it turned into an emotion that ran deep in his bones.

He truly considered Xu Pei as family and had even been more lenient with her than with his own sons.

It was for these reasons that he initially wanted to let Xu Pei off the hook.

And it was also for these reasons that he was now advising her so earnestly, hoping she would realize her mistakes and turn back.

Xu Pei’s heart sank abruptly. If Luo Xiaoqian had been bold enough to confront her directly, and now Leng Lin was questioning her in this way, it must mean Luo Xiaoqian had told Leng Lin about the video.

”That’s right, I did access Zimo’s computer, but is what she, Luo Xiaoqian, did really all that honorable?” Xu Pei raised her face to meet Leng Lin’s gaze, ”Do you know what was in that video? Do you know how Zimo and Luo Xiaoqian ended up together? She only tells you bad things about me, pretending to be a poor little thing in front of you, as if she’s always been the one bullied by me. But that’s not the case at all. The reason she got together with Zimo in the first place was for fame and fortune. I took that video to expose her true face!”
