Myriad Heavens: Rise of the Rune God

Chapter 287: Chapter 288: Welcome to the Reliquary

The featureless figure of living script stood at the far end of the black-stone hall. Its body shifted with quiet, endless motion, runes sliding over one another like scales on a snake that never stopped moving. The survivors faced it in silence. The full weight of their new mortal condition was still settling into their bones. Every breath felt heavy. Every heartbeat sounded too loud in the quiet room.

Recognition flickered across several faces in the group.

Soren Vale’s eyes narrowed. He had seen residual memories of the Rune Sovereign shaping a Will-lifeform from pure compressed script back in the forest layer. The connection formed instantly in his mind.

*So this is the one he left behind,* Soren thought, his analytical mind immediately categorizing the entity. *The referee. The manager of the Reliquary. The Paragon built a living, thinking estate manager out of runes and told it to run the game.*

Sylphy’s expression tightened the exact same way. She too had caught fragments of that creation memory. The presence standing before them matched the incomplete image she had carried ever since that day.

*He made a Will out of pure language,* she realized, a cold shiver running down her very mortal spine. *And now it is looking at us like we are bugs trapped in a jar.*

Others in the group simply understood that the force controlling every previous trial had finally stepped into the open. The dungeon master was no longer hiding behind locked doors and spatial cages. The one behind the scenes was finally showing its face.

The Ancient Will regarded them without haste. It did not have eyes, but everyone could feel it looking at them. Measuring them. Judging how pathetic they currently were.

”The true first stage of the Reliquary begins now,” the Will said. Its systematic voice carried a faint undercurrent of amusement. It sounded like a teacher watching students struggle with a very simple math problem. ”You will wage war against the inhabitants of this layer. They are monsters. Native to this space. The moment any of them detects your presence, they will enter a killing frenzy and hunt you without hesitation or mercy.”

It paused, letting the words settle into the heavy air.

”The weakest among them stands at the Galaxy level.”

The hall went completely, utterly still.

For three seconds, nobody breathed. Nobody blinked. The words just hung there, refusing to make sense.

Then Wukong’s head snapped up. His golden eyes were wide with raw, unfiltered disbelief.

”Galaxy level?!” Wukong’s voice cracked. He pointed a shaking finger at the featureless figure. ”While we’re stuck like this?! You’ve got to be joking! A Galaxy-level existence could sneeze in our direction and erase us from the timeline! I can’t even punch a wall right now without bruising my knuckles! How am I supposed to fight something that eats stars for breakfast?!”

Soren’s face had gone pale. His mind was already running cold, terrifying calculations. *Mortal bodies. No energy. No recovery. No shields. A single shockwave from a Galaxy-level monster would turn us into a fine red mist. If one of them simply walks past us, the displacement of air would shatter our eardrums and rupture our lungs. Survival odds under direct confrontation are effectively zero. Survival odds in indirect combat are also zero.*

”We are completely exposed,” Sylphy said. Her hands curled into fists at her sides. The silver bloodline markings on her arms remained dark and lifeless. ”In this state we cannot even run properly. If I trip over a tree root, I will twist an ankle. If I twist an ankle, I am dead.”

Lyra Solenne’s voice stayed low and controlled, but the tension beneath it was clear. ”Any detection means death. We cannot fight. We cannot run. We will have to move like shadows and hope the monsters have terrible eyesight.”

Darius Korr muttered a harsh curse under his breath, kicking the stone floor. His toe immediately started throbbing. ”Ow. Damn it. I forgot I have flesh toes now.”

Finn said nothing, but his eyes had gone sharp and restless. He was already scanning the walls for exits that did not yet exist, looking for a place to hide.

Vark’s expression barely changed. He was still Vark the Annihilator. But a rare flicker of deep, profound irritation crossed his features. Being reduced to this weak, fragile state was bad enough. But being told he had to hide from a Galaxy-level beast like a frightened rabbit? That sat poorly with him.

*I am Vark,* he thought, his jaw tightening. *I erase things from existence. And I am supposed to hide in a bush while a giant monster walks by? This is deeply insulting to my reputation.*

The mysterious woman remained silent. She stood slightly apart from the group, studying the Will with the same calm interest she had shown toward everything else. Only the slight tightening of her fingers betrayed that she understood the danger just as clearly as the rest of them.

*Fascinating,* she thought. *A Paragon’s personal ecosystem. I wonder what Galaxy-level monsters eat in a sealed dimension. Perhaps they eat each other. Or perhaps they eat intruders.*

Runar stood quietly near the middle of the group. The basic function of the Eye of Myriad Truths was still active, reading the faint residual structures in the hall. The suppression held firm. The threat was absolute. But Runar’s mind was not panicking. It was working.

*Galaxy level. In mortal bodies,* Runar thought, his expression perfectly calm. *This isn’t a trial. This is an extermination. Unless... there is a catch. The Will said ’the moment they detect your presence’. That implies they are not omnipresent. They do not automatically know where we are. They have to find us. Which means stealth is possible. And if the Paragon built this trial, he would not just throw mortals to Galaxy-level wolves without giving them a stick. There is a stick somewhere in this jungle. A loophole. A weapon. Something we can use.*

The Ancient Will watched their reactions. It saw the panic. It saw the dread. It saw Wukong looking like he wanted to throw a rock at it. And it felt open, clear satisfaction.

Then it laughed.

The sound filled the black-stone hall. It was long, echoing, and completely without warmth.

”Ha ha ha ha ha ha...”

The laughter rolled over them like a physical weight. It bounced off the black stone walls, amplifying until it felt like the room itself was mocking them. It was the laugh of a being that knew exactly how helpless they were and found it incredibly funny.

”Welcome to the Reliquary,” the Will said, its voice cutting through the fading echoes of its own laughter.

The figure of living script dissolved. Particles of language scattered and faded into the air until nothing remained. The space at the end of the hall was empty. The dungeon master had left the room and locked the door behind it. The hall felt emptier, colder, and infinitely more dangerous the moment the presence left.

A few heartbeats later, the voice returned. It was disembodied now, echoing from the walls and ceiling, still faintly amused.

”Do not worry. For the next twenty days you will remain safe within the designated zone. The monsters cannot enter this hall. After that, the safety zone drops, and you are on your own.”

The words landed like a thin rope thrown to drowning people.

Relief, fragile but very real, passed through the group. Shoulders dropped. Breaths were let out. Twenty days. It was not long. In the grand scheme of a Multiversal lifespan, twenty days was less than a blink. But right now, it was everything. It was time. Time to search for any method of restoring even a fraction of their power. Time to prepare. Time to figure out how to not die immediately.

Wukong exhaled hard, dragging a hand down his face. ”Twenty days. Okay. Okay, that’s something. I can work with twenty days. I need at least twenty years to figure out how to punch a Galaxy, but I will take what I can get.”

Soren nodded once, his scholar’s mind already shifting from panic to planning. ”We use every hour. We study the runes in this hall. We study the runes outside. If there is a way to loosen the suppression even slightly, we find it. We do not sleep unless we have to.”

Sylphy’s voice was steady again. The commander was back in control. ”We stay together for now. We pool our knowledge. Information is survival. If anyone finds a way to gather energy, or a weapon, or a safe route, they share it. We do not survive this by fighting each other.”

Runar nodded in agreement. *Twenty days to prepare,* he thought. *Twenty days to read the local environment. To find the loopholes. The Paragon’s game is brutal, but it is fair. There will be a way.*

At the far end of the hall, the black stone walls began to grind apart.

Heavy sections of rock slid sideways with a low, grating roar that shook the floor beneath their feet. Dust fell from the ceiling. The massive stone doors ground into the walls, revealing a wide path that led directly out of the safe zone and into dense, shadowed green.

A thick, humid wind drifted out of the opening. It hit them immediately, carrying the heavy scent of wet vegetation, rotting leaves, and something older. Something sharp and predatory that made the skin on the back of their necks tighten.

The jungle beyond was dark, even in what should have been daylight. The canopy above was so thick it blocked out the sky. Massive trunks rose like pillars, wider than buildings. Vines hung in thick, tangled curtains. The undergrowth looked dense enough to hide anything. And everything in it looked slightly too big, slightly too sharp, and slightly too hostile.

No one mistook it for ordinary wilderness. This was not a place for a casual hike.

Darius stared into the dark green gloom and swallowed hard. ”I don’t even have a pocket knife. What am I going to do if something jumps out? Throw a shoe at it?”

”Make sure it is a heavy shoe,” Finn muttered back, though he did not look away from the trees.

In every mind, the exact same understanding formed, clear and cold:

This was not a jungle.

This was a jungle of death. And they were at the very bottom of the food chain.

The survivors stood at the threshold in mortal bodies, stripped of almost everything that had once made them powerful. They felt the humidity on their skin. They smelled the damp earth. They heard the distant, unsettling rustle of leaves that sounded far too heavy to be caused by the wind.

Twenty days of safety stretched ahead of them inside the stone hall. A short fuse on a very large bomb. They had twenty days to turn themselves from helpless mortals into something that could survive.

After that, the safety zone would drop. The monsters would come.

And the true trial of the Reliquary would begin in earnest.
