Myriad Heavens: Rise of the Rune God

The portal opened without ceremony.

A tall rectangular frame of pure interlocking script rose from the dense ground. Its surface shifted in slow, deliberate patterns, runes sliding over one another like scales on something breathing. The light it cast was faint, barely enough to outline the edges of the doorway. The remaining survivors stood in silence for a moment, measuring the doorway and each other. Counting heads. Noting who was gone. No one spoke of the people who had already withdrawn. The choice had been made. Those who remained had already accepted whatever came next. There was no going back. There had not been for a while.

Runar stepped through first.

He did not hesitate. Did not look back. Did not pause at the threshold to steel himself or prepare. He simply walked forward, one foot crossing the boundary between what was and what came next, and the portal took him.

The transition was heavier than the previous ones. Far heavier. For a brief instant it felt as if every layer of his existence was being examined. Not read or scanned. Examined. Like the way a surgeon examines a body before cutting. Every principle he carried was touched. Every thread of cultivation was lifted, weighed, measured against some invisible standard. Then, one by one, they were pressed down. Compressed. Folded inward. Forced into a space so small they might as well not exist.

’This is different. The previous transitions moved me through space. This one is moving me through… states. Reducing me. Peeling things away.’

He tried to resist the examinations but couldn’t.

When his foot touched the other side, the world that received him was dim and quiet. An enclosed hall of black stone. The walls were etched with faint, dormant runes that pulsed so slowly they might as well have been still. The ceiling was lost in shadow above. The air was still. No wind. No current. No movement of any kind. The temperature was ordinary. Not cold. Not warm. Simply the absence of anything notable.

He stood in the center of the hall and waited for the others.

Then the suppression fell.

It did not arrive gradually. It did not build or creep or settle slowly into place. It slammed down like a physical weight. Like a ceiling collapsing. Like the entire sky dropping onto his shoulders in a single, merciless instant.

Every thread of Multiversal power he had retained through runes vanished. Not reduced. Not dampened. Not weakened. Vanished. Gone. Erased from his awareness so completely that for one disorienting moment he could not remember what it felt like to have it. Cultivation bases stripped. Principles stripped. Energy reserves stripped. Physical enhancements stripped. Passive defenses stripped. All of it. At once. In a single ruthless instant that left nothing behind but bare, unprotected existence.

Bodies that had been tempered across countless years of existence suddenly felt heavy. Slow. Fragile. Runar felt his own weight settle into his bones in a way it had not in longer than he could remember. His joints ached. Not painfully. Just noticeably. The simple fact of standing required effort his body had forgotten it needed. His heart beat too loudly in his chest. He could hear it. Could feel each thump pressing against his ribs. His lungs pulled air with noticeable effort, expanding and contracting in a way that felt crude and mechanical and wrong. Ordinary gravity pressed against shoulders and knees that had long forgotten what it meant to struggle under it.

’Heavy. Everything is heavy. My own body is heavy. I can feel the floor pushing back against my feet. I can feel the air moving into my lungs like I have to pull it in manually. This is… what it felt like before. Before everything. Before the first cultivation. Before the first principle. This is what it feels like to be MORTAL.’

Even recovery techniques failed. Passive regeneration, which had run silently in the background of his existence for so long he had stopped noticing it, simply ceased. Essence circulation halted. Automatic repair functions went dark. A cut now would stay open. A broken bone would remain broken. A wound would bleed until it bled enough to kill. Death, for the first time in an extremely long while, felt close. Real. Permanent. Not a setback. Not a temporary inconvenience to be reversed by a stored protocol. An ending. A full stop.

Wukong staggered half a step and caught himself against the stone wall. His hand slapped flat against the surface, fingers splayed, gripping the rough surface like it was the only thing keeping him upright. Golden eyes wide with disbelief. His mouth opened. Closed. Opened again.

”What the hell is this?!” His voice came out rougher than usual. Thinner. Stripped of the resonant power it normally carried. The sound bounced off the black stone walls and came back smaller. Weaker. ”I can’t feel anything. My energy is just… gone. All of it. Every thread. Every spark. It’s just… not there.”

He pushed himself off the wall. Tried to straighten. His legs wobbled slightly before he locked them. He looked down at his own hands. Flexed his fingers. Watched them move with a kind of horrified fascination.

”I can feel my muscles working. Like actual muscles. Like I have to tell them to move. When was the last time I had to do that?”

Soren Vale’s face had gone pale. Not frightened. Not panicked. Pale in the way of someone who had just received a diagnosis they were still processing. He looked down at his own hands as if they belonged to someone else. Turned them over. Examined the lines of his palms. Watched the tendons shift under the skin when he curled his fingers.

”Complete suppression,” he said. His voice was quiet. Controlled. But thinner than before. Lacking the subtle harmonic that usually underscored his words. ”Not partial. Not layered. Not something that can be worked around or partially resisted. Absolute. We have been reduced to mortal physical condition. Fully. Irrevocably. For as long as this place decides.”

Sylphy’s silver bloodline markings, which had glowed even under previous restrictions, which had pulsed with faint light through every suppression the Reliquary had applied so far, were now completely dark. Inert. The silver lines on her arms looked like old scars. Like decorations painted on skin that meant nothing. She flexed her fingers slowly, testing the weakness. Each movement was deliberate. Careful. The movements of someone learning a body they did not recognize. Her voice stayed controlled, but the edge beneath it was sharp enough to cut.

”We were Multiversal existences moments ago. Beings who could manipulate multiverses, rewrite principles and survive in the void without breathing. Now a single serious injury could kill us. A fall from height. A blade in the right place. A blow that ruptures something vital. We would simply… stop.”

Lyra Solenne stood very still. Her posture was rigid. Not tense. Still. The stillness of someone cataloguing every exit, every distance, every threat. Her eyes moved across the group in slow, deliberate sweeps. Measuring. Calculating.

”Recovery techniques are offline,” she said. Flat. Factual. The tone of someone delivering a report they wished they did not have to make. ”Regeneration is offline. Automatic repair is offline. Essence circulation is offline. In this state, a betrayal or a sudden attack would be final. There is no coming back from death here. Not for any of us. Not anymore.”

The implication settled over everyone at once. Like a cold draft moving through a sealed room. The hall suddenly felt smaller. The walls felt closer. Distances that had meant nothing before — three meters, five meters, ten — now carried weight. Meaning. Threat. Every person present was both a potential ally and a potential lethal threat. And no one knew which category the others fell into. Not yet. Not here. Not in this new, fragile state where a knife or a fist or a shove off a ledge could end things permanently.

Vark’s expression remained cold. Empty. The same flat, dead look he had worn since entering the Reliquary. But a rare flicker of irritation crossed his features as he tested his own body. Rolled his shoulders. Flexed his hands. Felt the ordinary, unremarkable strength in his fingers. The Principle of Annihilation was silent. Not suppressed. Not locked. Silent. As if it had never existed. As if the concept of erasure was something that belonged to a different life. His hands, which had erased spatial constructs with casual precision, which had unmade barriers and dissolved matter and turned existence into absence with a thought, now held only ordinary strength. The strength of a man. Nothing more.

His jaw tightened. Just once. Just barely. Then released.

Darius Korr and Finn Harlan exchanged a grim look. Neither spoke. Their earlier confidence — the easy assurance of men who had survived enough to believe they would survive everything — had been replaced by something simpler. Uglier. The awareness of vulnerability. Of being soft. Of being breakable. Finn’s hand drifted toward his side, where a weapon should have been, and found only empty air. He let the hand drop.

The mysterious woman stood slightly apart from the group. Posture still elegant even in a mortal body. Spine straight. Chin level. Hands clasped loosely in front of her. She examined her own hands with quiet interest, turning them slowly, watching the tendons move, the skin stretch, the nails catch the faint light. As if the weakness itself was a new variable worth studying. A new condition to be understood rather than resisted.

”Fascinating,” she murmured. So quietly that only those nearest heard. ”To feel the body again. To need it. To depend on it.” She closed her hands into fists. Opened them. ”I had forgotten what weight felt like.”

Runar remained the calmest. He stood in place, feet shoulder-width apart, hands at his sides. His breathing was steady. His expression was neutral. But behind his eyes, the Eye of Myriad Truths was active. Testing. Probing. Reaching for the deeper layers it had developed. The spatial authority. The axiom-level perception. The recursive reading.

Locked. All of it. Muted. Pressed flat. The deeper layers of the Eye were sealed behind the suppression like doors bolted from the outside. He could feel them there. Could sense their shape. But could not reach them. Could not use them.

Yet the most basic function still answered him. The foundation. The root. The original, irreducible core of the Eye that had existed before any evolution, before any growth, before the Reliquary had fed it anything. He could still read residual structures at a shallow level. Still perceive the faint dormant runes etched into the black stone around them. Still see the shapes of things, if not their depths. A thin thread of capability. A single strand where there had been a rope. But it was not nothing. And in a room full of people who had been stripped to zero, even a thread was an advantage.

*The deeper layers are locked. The spatial authority is muted. The evolved functions are inaccessible. But the base reading remains. The Eye’s foundation is older than the suppression. Deeper than the suppression. Whatever this place is doing, it cannot erase what the Eye fundamentally is. Only what it has become.*

He filed the information away without comment. Without expression. Without letting anyone see the small, quiet relief that came with knowing he was not entirely blind.

Wukong dragged a hand down his face and let out a harsh breath. The sound was rough. Human. Small. ”This is insane. We were basically gods out there. Folding space. Reading principles. Throwing power around like it was nothing. Now I feel like one solid punch could put me down. Like if I tripped on a stair I might actually break a bone or something.”

”That is the point,” Soren said quietly. His eyes were still moving, still cataloguing the room, the exits, the runes on the walls. But his voice had settled into something calmer. More analytical. The scholar reasserting itself over the shock. ”The previous trials filtered for comprehension and adaptability. They tested what you could learn. What you could read. What you could build from what was given. This one is stripping everything else away to test what remains when power is gone. When cultivation is gone. When every advantage that was earned or inherited or accumulated is removed. What is left? That is what this trial wants to know.”

Tension thickened in the hall. Visible. Tangible. The kind of tension that lived in shoulders and jaw muscles and the slight widening of eyes. No one stood too close to anyone else. Hands stayed visible. Open. Away from pockets or hidden spaces. Eyes tracked movement. Every shift of weight. Every step. Every turn of a head. In their current state, a single decisive attack from any of them could end another permanently. And everyone knew it. The knowledge sat in the room like a blade on a table. No one had picked it up. But everyone was watching it.

Then the air at the far end of the hall began to gather.

Script particles drifted together from the walls, the floor, the ceiling. Layer upon layer. Rune after rune. They assembled slowly, deliberately, like a sculpture building itself from dust. They formed a tall humanoid outline of pure language. The figure was featureless yet imposing. Its body was composed of constantly shifting runes that never settled into a fixed face. No eyes. No mouth. No expression. Just the suggestion of a shape that could look at you. Could speak to you. Could judge you. The runes that made up its surface moved in slow, complex patterns, rearranging themselves with each passing second so that the figure was never quite the same shape twice.

When it spoke, the voice was the same systematic tone they had heard before. Clean. Absolute. Carrying no emotion. Only now it carried a clear, personal weight. An intention behind the words that the earlier announcements had lacked.

”The filters are complete.”

The Ancient Will regarded the weakened group without haste. Its featureless head moved slowly, tracking from one face to the next. Measuring. Assessing. Not their power. They had none. Not their cultivation. It was gone. Something else. Something underneath. Something that remained when everything else was stripped away.

”What you faced until now were only selection mechanisms. Preliminaries. Warm-ups designed to separate those who could read from those who could not. To separate those who could adapt from those who would break. The true game of the Reliquary begins here.”

Its featureless head tilted slightly. A small gesture. Almost curious. As if examining each of them in turn. Looking for something specific. When its attention passed over Runar, it lingered. A fraction longer than the others. A beat too long. Not enough for most to notice. But Runar felt it. Felt the weight of that attention settle on him like a hand on his shoulder.

”You stand at the threshold of the Paragon’s real trial. Power has been removed so that only foundation remains. Only what you are beneath the cultivation. Beneath the principles. Beneath the power. Survive what comes next, and the deeper inheritance will open. Fail, and this mortal state will be the last condition you ever know. Not a setback. Not a delay. An ending.”

The words hung in the still air. No one moved. No one breathed too loudly. The black stone walls held the silence like a cup holds water.

The figure of script remained standing at the end of the hall. Silent now. Waiting. Its runes continued to shift, but slowly. Patiently. As if it had all the time that existed and none of the urgency that came with it.

Around the survivors, the black stone walls began to shift. New pathways of faint light etched themselves into the floor. Thin lines of dormant runes waking up, glowing softly, tracing routes that led deeper into the Reliquary. Multiple paths. Multiple directions. Not one road. Many. Choices. Divergences. Opportunities to separate. To compete. To disappear into different corridors and not see each other again.

They were mortal.

They were vulnerable.

They could bleed. Could break. Could die in ways they had not feared in longer than memory.

And the true game had finally begun.
