Myriad Heavens: Rise of the Rune God

Chapter 283: Chapter 284: Converging Cages

Time stretched inside the remaining barriers.

What had begun as focused effort slowly turned into something heavier, more personal. The spatial constructs did not tire. They simply continued existing—layered, recursive, indifferent to the people sealed inside them. Every failed attempt cost essence. Every repeated mistake cost more. The dense script ground far below glowed with the same dull, constant light as before, and the successful survivors standing on it looked smaller and more distant with every passing stretch of time.

Inside one mid-level cage a young man from a mid-tier clan pressed both hands against the inner wall and pushed for what felt like the hundredth time. The spatial fold he had been trying to pry open simply shifted under his palms, redirecting the force into a harmless loop that left his arms shaking and his spirit aching. Sweat ran down his temples in thin tracks. His breathing had gone ragged hours ago, or what felt like hours.

*It has to be over already,* he thought, the words repeating like a dull drum inside his skull. *The time limit must have sure passed. They left us here. We’re just leftover pieces the ruin doesn’t care about anymore. The strong ones are already down there. We’re the ones who weren’t worth the effort of finishing.*

He tried again. Same fold. Same result. The barrier did not even bother to punish him with backlash. It simply refused, the interlocking runes sliding past one another with quiet, mechanical precision.

In another cage higher up, a woman with sharp features and a cracked spirit sword sat slumped against the transparent wall. Her earlier attempts had been precise, almost elegant. Now they were desperate. She had already spent most of her stored essence trying to cut a single containment loop. Each time the loop sealed itself again, the cut vanishing as if it had never existed.

*Maybe it would be cleaner to die in here,* she thought, almost calmly now. The thought no longer shocked her. *At least it would be finished. Waiting like this, watching the light outside and knowing no one is coming... it feels worse than any blade.*

She still raised the sword again. The next cut was weaker than the last. The barrier absorbed it without comment.

A third cultivator—an older independent who had survived the first trial through pure stubbornness—kept slamming the same brute-force technique into the same section of barrier. The runes flexed under the impact, absorbed the kinetic force into a spatial buffer, and returned to their original state as if nothing had happened. His knuckles were bleeding freely. His eyes were bloodshot. His voice had gone hoarse from muttering the same sequence of activation words over and over.

*One more time. Just one more. It has to give eventually. Everything gives eventually.*

It did not give.

Across the remaining cages the same quiet despair settled in different forms. Some people stopped speaking entirely. Others muttered the same failed plan under their breath as if repetition itself might rewrite the runes. The isolation pressed harder than the barriers. No one could hear anyone else. No one could see clearly past the shifting spatial haze that distorted distance and direction. The only company was the slow, indifferent pulse of the language that held them.

Then one of them broke.

The young man from the mid-tier clan stopped pushing. His arms dropped to his sides. For a long moment he simply stared at the wall in front of him, chest rising and falling too fast. The crushing weight of the empty space outside the cage settled fully onto him. He had watched others escape. He had watched the ground fill with survivors. He had felt the stretch of time that must already have passed.

His voice came out raw, almost cracked, the words forced past a throat that no longer wanted to work.

”I forfeit. I give up.”

The words hung in the sealed air for less than a second.

The barrier around him flared once—bright, sharp, absolute. The spatial constructs locked into a single final configuration, then inverted. He vanished.

No sound. No residual energy. No drifting ash of language. No indication whether he had been erased, ejected back to the first layer, or sent somewhere far worse. The platform he had occupied simply floated empty, its barrier dissolving into faint residual script that faded moments later into the dim air.

Shock rippled outward in two directions at once.

On the dense script ground below, Wukong’s head snapped up. Golden eyes narrowed hard, the earlier humor gone from his face.

”He just... disappeared. Where the hell did he go? One second he’s there, next second—nothing. Not even a trace.”

Soren Vale’s expression tightened. Silver light moved behind his eyes as he tried to read the residual structure left by the vanished barrier. There was almost nothing to read. The spatial signature had been cleanly severed.

”The ruin accepts surrender,” he said quietly, voice carrying a rare note of unease. ”But the cost is unknown. Clean removal. No residual signature I can track across the layers. That is... concerning. It means the system is still fully active and selective.”

Sylphy stood with her four Experts in a tight formation, silver bloodline markings faintly visible along her arms. Her voice stayed low and controlled, but there was steel underneath.

”We do not forfeit. Whatever that was, we do not risk it. Keep watching the remaining cages. If anyone else starts looking ready to break, note it. Do not follow. Survival first. Curiosity later.”

One of her Experts muttered, ”Easy to say when you’re already on the ground.”

Sylphy did not look at him. ”Then stay on the ground.”

Vark barely glanced upward. Cold indifference sat on his features like a second skin. His voice, when it came, was flat.

”Weakness deserves whatever fate it receives. The ruin is merely efficient.”

The mysterious woman watched the empty platform for a few heartbeats longer than most. Mild curiosity crossed her composed face, nothing more. Then she returned to her own stillness, as if the disappearance had been only a minor note in a larger score she had already decided how to finish.

Inside the cages that still held people, the reaction was sharper. Fresh fear cut through exhaustion like a cold blade. Most of the remaining participants doubled down immediately. Methods that had been half-hearted a moment earlier became frantic. No one wanted to test what ”forfeit” actually meant when the alternative was an unknown erasure.

Runar noticed none of it.

Inside his increasingly complex cage he sat in a state of quiet ecstasy. The Eye of Myriad Truths poured golden-white light across every surface without pause. New spatial structures continued to appear, denser and more intricate than before, and he absorbed them one after another. Each fold was compared against the Rune Sovereign’s research notes. Each recursive loop was integrated. Each twisted direction settled into place inside his growing understanding.

He had long since understood enough to leave. The original barrier had been solved down to its foundational axioms. The additional layers the Will had added earlier had been solved as well. He simply chose not to leave.

*This is the most efficient study environment I have ever encountered,* he thought, calm and almost content. *The cage is no longer a prison. It is a personal library that keeps writing new pages for me. Every new structure is a free lesson. Why would I close the book early?*

His comprehension advanced at an extraordinary rate. Spatial principles that would have required weeks of careful study outside the Reliquary unfolded in minutes. The Eye adapted, refined, and expanded. Runar’s posture remained unchanged—legs crossed, back straight, expression serene. Only the intensity of the golden-white light betrayed how deeply he was reading.

Deep within the Reliquary the Ancient Will observed that enjoyment with growing satisfaction... and a hint of playful cruelty.

*He’s having far too good a time. That Eye is devouring everything I give it. The rate of absorption is higher than projected. Let’s see how he handles real pressure.*

The command went out through the viewing threads.

Several empty floating platforms that still carried intact spatial barriers drifted away from their original positions. They moved with deliberate purpose, sliding through the vertical space from different directions and heights. One approached from above, its barrier already rotating slowly. Two more rose from lower altitudes, their constructs denser than average. Another pair came in from the flanks, trailing faint residual scripts that had not yet fully faded. The barriers surrounding those platforms remained fully active, glowing with their own layered, interlocking language.

They locked into place around and beneath Runar’s cage with a series of soft, resonant clicks that only the Eye could fully interpret.

The moment the platforms touched, the barriers merged.

What followed was not a simple stacking of walls. The spatial constructs began to interpenetrate. Containment loops from one barrier nested inside the recursive folds of another. Distance axes that had been independent were forcibly aligned, then folded into higher-order manifolds. Directional vectors that once pointed outward were inverted and braided together, creating closed causal loops that reinforced one another. The individual cages collapsed into a single multi-layered spatial prison far denser and more complex than anything the trial had produced so far.

A visible lattice of cascading spatial runes formed around the original cage. The lattice was self-reinforcing: every time a structure attempted to stabilize, neighboring structures adjusted to increase the topological complexity. Nested Klein-like folds appeared at the intersections. Recursive containment shells multiplied, each one referencing the spatial signature of the others so that breaking any single layer would only tighten the remaining ones. The entire assembly pulsed once with a deep, resonant frequency, then settled into a steady, oppressive glow that distorted the light around it.

The new structure was no longer a cage. It was a self-writing spatial maze whose every surface actively rewrote its own geometry in response to observation.

Shock ran through everyone watching from the ground.

”Why is the ruin targeting him specifically?” one independent cultivator demanded, voice rising. ”The rest of us got one barrier. He’s getting a whole constellation.”

”Did he trigger something?” another asked. ”Some hidden condition?”

”That looks several times harder than what any of us faced,” Soren said, silver eyes narrowed as he tried—and failed—to fully parse the new lattice from a distance. ”The topological density alone is... extreme. Multiple independent spatial manifolds forced into mutual reference. Breaking one layer would likely increase the tension in the others.”

Wukong’s earlier grin was gone completely. His expression turned serious, golden eyes locked on the interlocking maze high above.

”Oi... what the hell is it doing to him? That doesn’t look like a normal difficulty spike. That looks personal.”

Sylphy’s voice was quiet but sharp. ”Whatever it is, the ruin has decided he is worth the extra attention. That is not comforting.”

Even Vark’s cold gaze lingered longer than usual. A single thought moved behind his eyes: *Interesting. The ruin is testing him harder than it tested me. Either he is a greater threat... or a greater prize.*

The mysterious woman watched the cascading lattice with genuine interest now, the mild curiosity of earlier sharpened into something closer to recognition.

Inside the newly formed lattice, Runar looked up at the cascading layers with calm interest rather than alarm. Golden-white light from the Eye of Myriad Truths continued to pour steadily outward, already beginning to map the fresh structures. The cage had grown denser. The pages had multiplied. The library had expanded into an entire wing of recursive geometry.

He began to read.

The Eye traced the nested Klein folds first, then the mutually referencing containment shells, then the higher-order manifolds that bound the entire assembly together. Each new principle settled into place against the Rune Sovereign’s research notes. Where the notes were incomplete, the Eye simply continued reading until the gaps closed.

Far below, the survivors stood on the dense script ground in uneasy silence. The empty platforms that had been pulled into the convergence left gaps in the vertical space, like missing teeth. The remaining independent cages glowed with quieter, more ordinary light. And at the center of the most complex prison the trial had yet produced, one figure sat unmoving, golden-white radiance still climbing.

The Ancient Will watched, patient and hungry, waiting to see whether its chosen vessel would finally show a limit.

The convergence was complete.

The real pressure had only just begun.
