Myriad Heavens: Rise of the Rune God

Chapter 268: Chapter 269: Memories of the Paragon

Farther ahead, deeper in the forest, Runar moved at a calm, measured pace.

The Eye of Myriad Truths remained fully open. Golden-white light spilled from it in a steady, unbroken stream, washing across every trunk, every leaf, every patch of ground he passed. Where the light touched, the surface of things became transparent. Not physically. The bark did not vanish. The leaves did not dissolve. But beneath them, the Eye revealed a second layer. Then a third. Then a fourth. Each one deeper than the last. Each one more complex. Structures hidden beneath structures. Patterns nested inside patterns like boxes inside boxes, going down further than seemed possible.

Runar walked through it all without stopping. His eyes moved constantly. His mind sorted and filed and connected. A sequence that had resisted him a few minutes ago now opened the moment the light touched it, like a lock recognizing the right key. He let the understanding flow in. He did not grab at it. Did not force it. He simply let it settle into place, piece by piece, with quiet efficiency.

’So the outer trees were instruction manuals for beginner learners. They govern soil, light, air, suppression. These deeper ones carry more than function. And it seems like there is something else underneath.’

The deeper he went, the denser the script became. The trees here were older. Thicker. Their roots spread wider, digging deeper into ground that was itself made of compacted symbols. Their bark carried layers of accumulated meaning that stretched back further than anything in the outer forest. Runar could feel the age in them. Not in years. In depth. In the sheer weight of what had been written into them.

Some sequences no longer simply described the local environment. Some carried fragments of older intent. Faint residual thoughts left behind by whoever had written them. Runar could feel them pressing against his awareness as he passed. Like fingerprints pressed into wet clay, still visible after the hand was long gone. Still warm. Still carrying the shape of the mind that made them.

Most were too incomplete to form clear images or even a scene. A word here. A feeling there. A half-formed thought that reached toward meaning and then dissolved before it could arrive. Runar filed them away without slowing. He did not chase them. Did not try to force them into clarity. They were pieces. Small ones. But another part of his mind worked on them in the background, turning them over, merging and testing them against each other, waiting for enough fragments to accumulate into a picture of what the hell is even happening.

’These are not random residue. Someone’s thoughts are left in the script. If I collect enough pieces, maybe if I can put the together and then I can see the whole shape.’

Context would come later.

Then he noticed something. One tree was different.

He had almost walked past it. Almost. His stride was steady. His focus was forward. But the Eye caught something at the very edge of his perception. A density that did not match the surrounding trunks. A weight that pulled at the golden-white light like a stone pulling at water. A wrongness in the pattern. Not broken. Not damaged. Just... heavier than it should be. Older than its neighbors. More.

His foot stopped mid-step. His body halted before his conscious mind had made the decision.

’Hm? What is that?’

He turned his head slowly.

An ancient trunk stood slightly apart from its neighbors. Noticeably thicker. The bark was almost black, darkened not by rot but by age. By accumulation. Layers of meaning piled on top of layers of meaning until the surface had compressed into something dense and hard. The runes covering it pulsed with a deeper, older light than anything else in the forest. Not the soft gold of the younger trees. Something closer to deep amber. Something that felt like it had been burning since before the forest around it existed.

The symbols did not shift and breathe like the others. They held still. They waited. They had the aura of something that had sat in one spot for longer than most civilizations lasted. Residual intent clung to those symbols like faint smoke that refused to dissipate. It curled around the edges of each rune in slow, patient spirals. Not escaping. Not fading. Just lingering. Preserved.

Runar stared at it. His breathing slowed.

’This tree is older than the rest. Much older. And the intent clinging to it is not scattered like the fragments I have been collecting. It is concentrated and Dense.’

He took a step closer. The residual intent thickened around him as he approached, pressing against his skin like walking into warm mist.

’Hmmmn, someone left this here on purpose. This is not leftover residue from work. This is a ful recording. A message left for whoever has the eyes to find it.’

’Special Eyes like mine, I guess.’

The golden-white light from his Eye intensified on its own, responding to the density of what lay ahead. He stopped an arm’s length from the trunk. He raised one hand and placed his palm flat against the dark bark. The surface was warm. Not hot. Warm, like skin. Like something alive.

’It is reacting to me. The runes are listening.’

He focused the full power of the Eye of Myriad Truths on the cluster. All of it. Every thread of golden-white light converged into a single, sharp point of perception. And he pushed.

The runes under his palm flared.

’WTF—’

But before he could react, the residual intent surged upward through his hand, through his arm, into his chest, behind his eyes. The sensation was not painful. It was like being filled with warm water. Like sinking into a deep bath. The forest around him began to thin. It did not suddenly disappear but it began to thin out gradually. Become less solid. Less present. The trees lost their edges. The ground lost its weight. The light lost its direction.

And soon the forest was gone.

---

He stood in a place that had no walls and no floor.

’Where... the hell am I?’

There was no ground beneath his feet, yet he did not fall. There was no sky above, yet the space extended upward without limit. The air, if it could be called air, was perfectly still and perfectly clear. Runar looked down at his hands. They were there. He could feel them. But they felt distant. Like looking at a reflection rather than the thing itself.

’No ground. No sky. No forest. This is not the layer anymore. This is somewhere else. Somewhere older.’

Endless sheets of glowing script floated in every direction. Some were the size of entire sectors. Vast planes of dense, interlocking symbols that rotated slowly in the empty air, turning like the pages of a book that no hand was reading. Others were as small as a an atom. Tiny fragments drifting like dust motes caught in a sunbeam. They turned. They shifted. They occasionally folded through one another without colliding, passing through each other like light through glass. Trillions of them. Tens of trillions. A workspace without walls. A library without shelves.

’So much script. My god, look at the size of that, i would estimate it to be larger in size than a few hundred sectors combined. And it is still moving. Like it is still being used.’

In the exact center of that infinite workshop, a tall figure stood with his back turned.

’Who is that?’

Plain dark robes. No decoration. No sigils. No marks of rank or authority. Just simple cloth hanging over a frame that was lean and still. He could have been anyone. A scholar. A farmer. A nobody. Except for the way the floating script arranged itself around him. Everything drifted in slow orbits centered on his position. Everything leaned toward him. As if the entire space existed to serve the thoughts happening behind those dark robes.

The figure wrote in the empty air with one finger. Each stroke moved slowly. Deliberately. With the patience of someone who had all the time that existed and none of the urgency that usually came with creation. Every stroke left behind runes so dense and precise that looking at them for too long made the mind ache.

Runar’s thoughts sharpened. The questions — where am I, what is this, who is that man — he shoved them all to the back of his mind. Not gone. Not ignored. Just filed away for later. Right now, something more important was happening right in front of him.

Those runes. The ones being drawn. He needed to read them. This was a once in a life time oppurtunity.

The Eye of Myriad Truths locked onto the figure’s finger. Every thread of golden-white light focused. Not on the man but on the runes he was writing. Runar pushed his comprehension to the limit, trying to catch the structure of each stroke as it formed. Trying to copy it. Trying to understand it before it was gone.

The first rune took shape. Slowly. Stroke by stroke. Runar’s Eye drank it in. He could feel the meaning building. Layers after layers of compressed principles folding into a single symbol. His mind raced to keep up. The structure was unlike anything he had ever seen. The grammar was different. The logic was different. The way the rune referenced principles was not linear, not hierarchical. It was... simultaneous. Every part of the symbol existed in relation to every other part at the same time. No beginning. No end. Just a complete, self-referencing loop of meaning.

His mind grabbed onto the edge of it. One fragment. One thread of understanding.

’I have never seen such thing in my life... i cant believe runes can be used this way? Self-referencing loops? The symbol defines itself by its own structure? That means it does not need an external anchor to function. It just... is. Permanently. Without maintenance. Without input.’

The realization hit him like a physical blow. His entire understanding of rune construction shifted on its axis. Everything he had built before assumed runes needed something outside themselves to sustain their function. A power source. A principle to draw from. A structural frame to hold them in place. But this rune did not. It sustained itself. It was its own source and its own frame and its own function, all at once.

He barely had time to let the implications settle before the figure’s hand moved again.

The rune vanished. Erased. Wiped clean like chalk off a board. Gone as if it had never existed.

And the figure started drawing again. From scratch. A new configuration. A new attempt.

Runar blinked.

’...Come on. A poor student is still here trying to copy the notes.’
