Myriad Heavens: Rise of the Rune God

Chapter 282: Chapter 283: Different Keys

The barriers closed one after another, sealing seventeen glowing cages at different heights across the vast vertical gulf. What had looked like simple floating platforms a moment earlier now revealed their true nature. These were not walls. They were layered spatial constructs woven from pure language—runes that twisted distance, folded direction, and locked containment into recursive loops. Every surface pulsed with shifting script that made the air inside denser, the space itself slightly wrong.

Brute force alone would be inefficient here. Only applications of your runes. The trial demanded deep rune knowledge combined with complex spatial calculations. The ones who understood that would move forward. The ones who did not would waste time and energy until the limit arrived.

Vark stood on one of the highest platforms, cold annihilation already flowing from his fingertips. He did not study the barrier. He erased it with his own annihilation runes.

To him there was nothing he couldn’t solve with annihilation.

Entire sections of spatial runes simply ceased to exist under his touch, the constructs dissolving into drifting ash of language. The barrier tried to reform, denser and more intricate, but Vark’s principle did not negotiate. It annihilated. Chunk after chunk vanished. The temperature around his cage dropped until frost formed on the outer surface and then shattered under the continuing pressure.

Farther down, the mysterious woman remained almost motionless. The barrier surrounding her pulsed once, twice, then began to thin at the edges without any visible technique from her. The scripts that tried to lock her in simply lost cohesion, as if the space itself had decided it no longer wished to contain her. She stood with the same regal stillness, watching the process the way one might watch a candle burn down.

Soren Vale sat cross-legged on a mid-level platform, silver light steady behind his eyes. He traced every interlocking rune with scholarly precision, mapping the spatial folds one by one. His method was slow, careful, and almost elegant. He muttered under his breath as he worked, cataloguing structures the way another man might catalogue rare books.

Sylphy’s cage glowed with a denser silver sheen. Her bloodline markings flared brighter as she drove both pure power and carefully woven runes into the barrier at the same time. The combination was forceful yet controlled. The four Experts on nearby platforms of similar height worked in loose coordination with her, each attacking their own cages while keeping peripheral awareness of the others.

Wukong pressed both palms against the inner wall of his barrier and pushed. The spatial constructs flexed but did not break. He tried again, harder, golden energy cracking across the surface. Still nothing. He clicked his tongue.

”Yeah,” he muttered, ”this is definitely going to be annoying.”

He shifted tactics, drawing on the techniques Runar had taught him earlier—chaotic force mixed with precise rune disruption. The barrier shuddered. Small fractures appeared, then sealed again almost immediately. Wukong grinned despite himself.

”Fine. We’ll do it the hard way.”

Other participants struggled at various levels. Some hammered with pure strength and achieved almost nothing. Others tried crude spatial cuts that only tangled the constructs further. A few sat and read carefully, making slow but steady progress. The vertical space filled with the quiet sounds of effort—cracking runes, shifting air, the occasional sharp curse.

Runar sat in the center of his mid-to-high platform and fully activated the Eye of Myriad Truths.

Golden-white light flooded the interior of his barrier in a sudden, overwhelming wave. The Eye opened completely, its layered structure spinning with quiet intensity. Every spatial rune on the cage walls lit up under its gaze. Distance twisted. Direction folded. Containment loops revealed themselves one after another like pages turning in a book only he could read.

He did not attack the barrier. He studied it.

The research notes absorbed from the Rune Sovereign’s residual memories rose in his mind, comparing, matching, accelerating. Structures that would have taken ordinary cultivators hours to decipher unfolded in seconds. Spatial principles that once required long contemplation settled into place almost instantly. Runar’s expression remained calm. To him this was not a cage. It was free study material of exceptional quality.

The mere presence of the fully activated Eye was impossible to ignore.

Even through the barriers, the golden-white light and pressure reached outward. Participants mid-effort turned their heads. Conversations inside other cages stopped. Several people froze for a full second before forcing themselves back to their own work.

Wukong, still grinding chaotic force against his wall, gritted his teeth and let out a short laugh.

”Yeah... I knew that eye had gotten more terrifying than what I remembered.” He shoved harder, fractures spreading wider. ”Show-off.”

Soren Vale’s careful analysis stuttered. His silver eyes widened for a moment as he reassessed the man sitting two platforms away. The threat level he had assigned Runar earlier rose several notches without conscious decision. He returned to his own barrier with renewed focus, but the shock lingered.

Sylphy’s eyes narrowed. She watched the golden-white radiance for several long heartbeats, then adjusted her mental ranking. Runar now sat just below the mysterious woman and Vark in her internal hierarchy. The gap was still real, but it was no longer comfortable.

Inside another cluster of barriers, Lyra’s group exchanged rapid, low voices.

”His threat level just jumped.”

”That light alone is enough to disrupt concentration.”

”We treat him as a primary concern from this point forward.”

Vark’s cold gaze flicked once toward Runar’s cage. Annihilation continued without pause, but a single thought moved through his mind like a blade.

*Why so many surprises today? First that woman, and now this one. Fine. I will annihilate anyone who stands in my way.*

Independent cultivators scattered across the heights showed various degrees of alarm. Some recalculated escape priorities. Others simply stared longer than they should have, losing precious seconds.

The mysterious woman glanced toward Runar’s barrier. For the first time since entering the Reliquary, something like genuine interest crossed her composed features.

*Looks like my trip here wasn’t wasted.*

Deep within the Reliquary, far beyond any of their reach, the Ancient Will watched with clear pleasure.

The viewing threads tightened. The hidden observation filament attached to Runar pulsed with quiet satisfaction.

*I chose correctly. That eye is truly marvelous. Just the aura alone is exceptional. I cannot wait to occupy his body and fully explore what that Eye can do.*

The Will then made a subtle adjustment.

New, more complex spatial runes began multiplying across the surface of Runar’s barrier. Layers folded into deeper layers. Distance twisted in ways that had not existed moments earlier. Containment loops nested inside containment loops, each one denser and more advanced than the last. The difficulty rose sharply, precisely calibrated to force genuine effort without risking the vessel the Will intended to claim.

*Let’s see where your limits are, boy.*

Inside the cage, Runar noticed the change immediately. The sudden multiplication of runes registered under the Eye as a fresh wave of structure. Complexity climbed. Spatial principles that had been advanced a moment ago became borderline esoteric.

He was not alarmed.

The new structures were denser, yes, and more advanced, but they still aligned with the research notes he carried. Every new fold, every recursive loop, every twisted direction found a matching principle somewhere in the Rune Sovereign’s residual knowledge. Where gaps existed, the Eye filled them through pure adaptive reading.

To Runar this was simply more free material.

More runes to read.

More spatial principles to digest.

More understanding to claim.

He continued sitting calmly, reading at an even faster pace. Comprehension speed remained insanely high. Within a short span he had already understood most of the original barrier and could have broken out at any moment. He chose not to. Instead he kept studying the new layers the Will kept throwing at him, golden-white light pouring steadily from the Eye as he absorbed everything.

Outside his cage the trial continued.

Vark’s annihilation reached a critical threshold. Entire sections of his high barrier simply ceased to exist. The remaining constructs collapsed under the pressure. He stepped through the dissolving wall, dropped through the vertical space with controlled force, and landed on the dense script ground far below. The moment both feet touched, a soft chime marked his successful escape. He stood there, cold gaze already turning upward to watch the others, expression unchanged.

A short time later the mysterious woman’s barrier finished thinning. The last scripts lost cohesion and faded. She stepped out as if walking through an open door, descended with light steps, and reached the ground without visible effort. Another chime sounded. She stood a measured distance from Vark, regal stillness intact, and allowed her gaze to drift once more toward the glowing cage still high above where Runar continued to sit.

The first two successful escapes sent a visible ripple through the remaining participants. Pressure rose. Several people increased their efforts sharply. Others faltered under the sudden reminder that time was not infinite.

Wukong finally forced a large fracture through his barrier using a chaotic combination of force and the techniques Runar had taught him. He shoved both hands into the opening, tore it wider, and dropped through with a short triumphant grunt. He landed harder than the previous two, rolled once, then stood and looked upward with a fierce grin.

”Still annoying,” he announced to no one in particular. ”But doable.”

Soren’s careful analysis paid off next. He rewrote a critical spatial fold, collapsing an entire containment loop. The barrier destabilized. He stepped through calmly, descended with measured control, and touched the ground. His silver eyes immediately sought Runar’s still-intact cage, the earlier shock still present.

Sylphy and her Experts followed in close succession, bloodline power and dense rune work combining to force openings. They landed together, forming a tight group on the script ground, all of them looking upward with varying degrees of calculation.

More escapes followed. Some clean. Some ragged. A few participants still struggled high above, their barriers showing little progress.

Through it all, Runar remained seated inside his increasingly complex cage. Golden-white light continued to pour from the Eye of Myriad Truths without pause. New layers of spatial runes multiplied across the walls, and he absorbed them one after another, expression calm, posture unchanged. He had already understood enough to leave at any moment. He simply chose to keep reading.

Far below, the successful survivors stood on the dense script ground and watched the remaining cages. Conversations started in low voices. Threat assessments shifted again. Eyes kept returning to the mid-to-high platform where golden-white radiance still burned brightest of all.

Deep in the Reliquary the Ancient Will observed with growing hunger and satisfaction. The viewing threads focused tighter. The hidden filament recorded every structure Runar decoded, every principle he absorbed, every quiet adjustment of the Eye.

*Marvelous,* the Will thought. *Truly marvelous.*

The gap between Runar and the rest of the field continued to widen—not through speed of escape, but through pure depth of understanding.

Seventeen barriers had closed.

Fewer and fewer remained sealed.

And inside the densest cage of all, the Eye of Myriad Truths kept reading.
