Myriad Heavens: Rise of the Rune God

Chapter 275: Chapter 276: The Silent Tower

Runar had been flying for a very long time.

Even with the minimal Multiversal speed he had access to through the runes, the first layer of the Ruin, The Myriad Script Reliquary, refused to end. The living forest stretched across distances that felt comparable to multiple full sectors.

Trees larger than planets blurred past on both sides in an endless stream of shifting bark and glowing script. The ground beneath his feet was a constant river of runes that tried, and failed, to catch hold of him as he moved. He had stopped trying to measure the exact distance after the first few million void units. It no longer mattered. Only the growing density of the living scripts ahead told him he was still heading in the correct direction.

The forest did not feel hostile. It felt patient. Every trunk, every branch, every drifting leaf carried layers of meaning that shifted the moment his attention touched them. Some scripts tried to latch onto his feet like soft roots. Others rose in thin vertical curtains that attempted to rewrite the space around his body. He cut through them without slowing.

The Eye of Myriad Truths stayed half-open, just enough to keep observing the intent memories that he hadn’t watched yet as there was a lot of duplicate memories. Anything more would have been a waste of focus this early.

When the center of the forest finally appeared in his perception he did not slow down gradually. He simply decided to stop.

The sudden deceleration created a deep, rolling boom that exploded outward through the surrounding trees. Leaves shook violently. Several massive trunks swayed as the shockwave passed through them. For a brief moment the entire area went still, as if the forest itself had paused to acknowledge the arrival. Then the living runes resumed their slow, patient movement, and the quiet returned.

Far to the left a few void units away, Wukong nearly face-planted when the shockwave hit.

He caught himself on a thick root, golden eyes wide. ”Oh, you absolute bastard...” A sharp, delighted laugh burst out of him. ”Someone already made it. And they didn’t even bother slowing down properly.”

He rolled his shoulders once, cracked his neck, and the chaotic energy that had been coasting at a steady burn suddenly spiked. Scripts around him recoiled. The living trees leaned away as if the air itself had grown sharp. Wukong launched forward again, faster than before, tearing a clean tunnel through the denser layers of language. Leaves and shredded runes streamed behind him in a long, glowing wake.

”I’m not letting that bastard claim the first seat alone.”

”No way I’m letting whoever that bastard was claim the first position alone. Move!”

He didn’t know he just called his best friend a bastard.

---

Several sectors farther back and slightly to the right, Sylphy felt the same boom through the soles of her boots and cursed under her breath.

She was mid-leap between two interlocking canopies when the shockwave arrived. The branch under her feet flexed hard. Script-leaves exploded outward in a sudden silver storm. Behind her, the rest of the pirate group staggered in the turbulence.

”Captain?” her first mate called.

”Someone just slammed the brakes at the center,” she said, already pushing harder. Silver markings along her wrists lit up. ”Looks like we’re late. Full speed—now. Full formation. No more testing every tree for traps. We cut straight through. This is a Paragon ruin. One real treasure and none of us ever scrape for contracts again. I’m not arriving third.”

The pirates didn’t need telling twice. They surged after her, formation tightening, cutting a cleaner, hungrier path through the living trees.

Sylphy took the lead again, silver bloodline markings glowing faintly along her wrists as she carved a cleaner line than before.

Whoever had arrived first had just told every strong reader in the layer exactly where the real checkpoint was instead for reading and guessing.

---

Deeper still, in a narrower corridor of older, denser trees, Soren Vale felt the boom as a precise vibration against the delicate lattice of runes he maintained around his body.

He was thin to the point of severity, long-limbed and pale, with ink-dark hair tied back in a severe knot. His robes were simple, almost monkish, marked only with the minimal reinforcing scripts of someone who trusted pure foundation over flashy techniques. Among the top ten entrants who had survived the outer filter, Soren’s reputation rested on one fact: his understanding of the Principle of Runes was nearly flawless. He did not overpower language. He negotiated with it.

The shockwave still made his lattice flicker.

Soren’s eyes opened fully. The Eye technique he used was quieter than most, a pale silver rather than gold, but it missed almost nothing. He read the residual pressure in the scripts around him and calculated distance, force, and intent in the space of three breaths.

Someone had arrived at a place of absolute stillness and stopped with enough force to send a clean wave this far back.

His thin lips pressed into a flat line.

”The center has opened,” he murmured. ”Or at least the first true node.”

He adjusted the lattice around his body, tightening the outer layers, discarding every redundant thread. Then he moved. Not with explosive speed, but with a sudden, frightening efficiency. Trees that had been offering resistance a moment earlier simply parted. False paths dissolved before they could fully form. Soren Vale glided forward at a pace that looked almost leisurely until one measured the distance vanishing beneath his feet.

He had not come this far to arrive second.

---

Darius Korr and Finn Harlan nearly collided when the boom wave hit them.

Darius Korr was the tall one—broad-shouldered, dark-skinned, with a permanent scowl and a heavy war-glaive strapped across his back. Finn Harlan was the short one—compact, quick-eyed, constantly muttering half-formed readings under his breath. They had formed a temporary alliance somewhere in the middle of the outer forest after nearly killing each other over a contested script cluster. Mutual survival had proven more useful than mutual suspicion.

Finn spat a curse. ”Someone beat us to the middle. You feel that?”

Darius’s scowl deepened. He turned his head toward the direction of the wave, listening to the way the living scripts still trembled.

”Center,” he grunted. ”Has to be.”

Finn’s eyes flicked rapidly over the residual patterns. ”Whoever it was stopped cold. No crash. No crater. Just... stopped. That’s expensive considering we are all suppressed in this ruin, that person must be strong.”

They looked at each other for half a second.

Then both accelerated at the same time.

Darius’s scowl deepened as he ran. ”Yeah. And I’m not finishing second in a Paragon ruin. One good haul changes the rest of our lives.” He lengthened his stride. ”Keep up, short-ass.”

Finn was already accelerating beside him, eyes sharp. ”Try and stop me.”

Neither of them spoke again. They simply ran harder, the forest blurring into streaks of bark and glowing language around them.

---

On a parallel vector several degrees off from the others, Lyra Solenne felt the boom through the coordinated reading net her group maintained.

She was the woman from the multiversal branch center—tall, composed, silver bloodline markings tracing elegant lines across her collarbones and the backs of her hands. Four followers moved with her in a tight diamond, their auras carefully synchronized so that the living forest treated them as a single, coherent presence rather than five separate targets. That technique alone had carried them through the densest stretches of the outer layer with far less attrition than most groups.

The shockwave rippled through their net like a stone dropped into still water.

Lyra’s eyes sharpened. She raised one hand. The entire formation slowed for three precise heartbeats while she read the echo.

”Someone reached the core clearing,” she said quietly. ”And announced it.”

One of her followers—the quiet man who handled secondary reading—spoke without looking away from the scripts ahead. ”The residual force is clean. High-level stop. No wasted energy.”

Lyra nodded once.

”Then the first real checkpoint is active, or about to be. We do not arrive late to a node like that.”

The diamond formation tightened. Their combined reading deepened. The living trees that had been offering polite but firm resistance a moment earlier found themselves being systematically rewritten at the edges. Lyra Solenne and her four moved forward at a new, harder pace, the silver markings on her skin glowing with restrained intensity.

Behind them, the disturbed scripts of the outer forest slowly closed over their passage, already forgetting they had been there.

---

Back in the clearing, Runar stood in the unnatural quiet and felt the distant accelerations like faint pressure changes against the edge of his perception.

They had heard.

They were coming faster now.

---

Runar stood in a vast circular clearing that felt completely different from the wild forest he had been travelling through.

The ground here was unnaturally flat and smooth. The chaotic, overlapping scripts of the outer forest ended at a clean boundary, as if someone had drawn a perfect circle with a blade of pure intent and erased everything outside the line. Inside that boundary everything was deliberate. The air itself carried less weight. The constant low hum of shifting language that had followed him for so long dropped away, replaced by a silence so complete it pressed against the eardrums.

’So silent.’ he thought. In the exact middle of the clearing rose a Single Tower.

It was tall and narrow, built entirely from interlocking runes so dense that even the Eye of Myriad Truths had to work to separate the outer layers. The structure did not look like it had been constructed by hands. It looked as though it had grown directly out of pure language. There were no windows, no visible entrance, and no markings that suggested a door. The surface shifted in slow, complex patterns that should have been overflowing with meaning. Instead they moved with a restrained, almost clinical precision, as if the tower itself were conserving every scrap of information until the right moment.

And around the base of the tower, arranged in a perfect ring, were twenty large circles carved directly into the ground. Each circle was wide enough for a person to sit comfortably inside. The runes that formed them were different from the ones on the trees and different from the ones on the tower. They were tighter, more rigid, and completely still. No glow. No drift. No residual heat of intent. Just clean, geometric lines cut into the smooth stone of the clearing floor.

Runar walked forward at a normal pace, eyes moving carefully between the tower and the twenty circles. His boots made soft, precise sounds against the ground. The eerie quietness swallowed each footfall almost immediately.

”So this is the first real checkpoint. Everything before this was only the filter. The outer forest was designed to thin out the people who couldn’t read well enough. This place is where the actual test begins.” he said to himself as he stopped at the edge of the nearest circle and crouched down. The Eye of Myriad Truths focused fully on the runes beneath him. Golden-white light spilled across the markings as he tried to peel them apart layer by layer. He expected resistance. He expected nested defenses, false meanings, or even a mild backlash meant to warn the careless. He received none of those things.

Nothing happened.

No information returned. No residual intent rose. No hidden structure revealed itself. The runes remained completely silent, as if they were not runes at all but only empty shapes cut into the ground. The light from his Eye washed over them and simply vanished into the stone without reflection or reaction.

Runar’s expression did not change, but his thoughts sharpened. A low, cold pressure settled behind his sternum.

”So they are Locked. Clearly not hidden. But completely locked. Let me try the rest.”

He stood and moved to the second circle. Again he placed his palm flat against the center and pushed his perception as deep as it would go. The Eye of Myriad Truths worked at full capacity. Threads of golden-white light sank into the stone and found nothing to catch onto. The circle might as well have been a blank surface painted to look like language.

Still nothing.

”Seems like this Rune Sovereign like to play games. He is annoying me even after he left.”

He repeated the process with the third circle, then the fourth, then the fifth. Each time the result was the same. By the time he reached the tenth circle his movements had become methodical. He no longer expected a different answer. He was simply confirming the pattern. By the fifteenth he already knew what the final ones would show him. When he finished examining the twentieth circle he straightened and looked back at the entire ring.

Every single one of them was inert, they gave no reaction. Even the Eye could not pull a single thread of meaning out of them. That should not have been possible with runes of this density unless they had been deliberately designed to stay silent until a specific condition was met.

”I wonder what that condition is. It better be not what I am thinking.”

He turned toward the tower itself.

Up close the surface was cool under his fingers. The runes moved in slow, layered patterns that looked more complex than anything he had seen in both the inner and outer forest. He opened the Eye of Myriad Truths fully and tried to read. Golden-white light flooded the immediate space, outlining every shifting character, every overlapping stroke, every micro-adjustment in the tower’s surface.

Silence.

An Absolute, unbroken silence.

Runar kept his hand on the tower for several long seconds, pushing harder, changing angles of perception, trying different methods of decryption. He inverted the flow of the Eye. He layered multiple reading techniques on top of one another. He attempted to force a resonance with the denser scripts he had already mastered in earlier ruins. Nothing worked. The tower refused to give him even the smallest fragment of information. It was not resisting him. It simply was not present for him to read.

He stepped back and stood in the center of the clearing, looking over the twenty silent circles and the equally silent tower. The quiet pressed in from every direction. Even the distant movement of the living forest seemed muted, as if the clearing existed slightly out of phase with the rest of the layer.

”They’re clearly waiting for something. The circles and the tower are connected. Twenty positions arranged with perfect precision around a single focal point. The most logical explanation is that all twenty circles need to be occupied at the same time before anything activates.”

It was the cleanest theory he could form with the information available. Twenty seats. One central structure. A test that began only when the required number of entrants arrived and took their places. Anything more elaborate would have required the ruin to reveal more of itself, and it clearly had no intention of doing so yet.

He walked back to the circle that faced the direction he had come from and stepped into its center. The runes under his feet remained completely dead. No warmth. No acknowledgment. No shift in the air. He sat down cross-legged anyway, resting his hands lightly on his knees, and let his breathing settle. The stone was cool and perfectly smooth. After the constant motion of the outer forest the stillness felt almost aggressive.

”I’ll wait. The others are still coming. I can feel them clearly.”

Far beyond the edges of the enormous clearing, multiple powerful auras were still moving at high speed through the living forest. Some of the signatures were already familiar.

Wukong’s golden chaotic but steadily growing presence was approaching from the left, bright and restless, like a storm that had decided to walk instead of rage.

Vark’s cold, heavy aura was coming from farther ahead and to the right, steady and unhurried, the kind of pressure that made the surrounding scripts lean away without quite breaking.

The focused group that included the woman with the silver bloodline markings was moving together in a tight formation, their combined presence sharp and disciplined.

Several other strong entrants who had survived the outer layer and chosen to push deeper were also closing in from different directions.

They were all heading toward the same place.

Runar kept the Eye of Myriad Truths active at a low, efficient level, continuously scanning the silent tower and the empty circles while he waited. There was no point in forcing anything. The ruin had already demonstrated that it would only open what it wanted to open, when the conditions it had set were met. Pushing harder would only waste focus he might need later.

Around him the living forest continued its quiet, endless breathing. The tower stood motionless. The twenty circles remained dark and still.

Time passed. He did not track it carefully. In a place like this, measuring minutes or hours meant little. The outer forest still stretched for uncountable distances in every direction. The readers who had made it this far would arrive when they arrived. Some would be faster. Some would be more cautious. A few might turn back when they sensed the sudden change in density at the edge of the clearing. Most would not. The ones who had survived the filter were not the type to turn around at the first real test.

A faint vibration reached him through the stone.

He opened his eyes fully. One of the auras on the left had accelerated. Wukong. The chaotic signature flared brighter for a moment, then settled into a hard, driving line aimed straight at the clearing. The living trees in that direction began to lean and shift more aggressively, reacting to the force of his passage. A low, rolling sound followed, not quite a roar and not quite laughter, carried on the disturbed scripts.

Runar remained seated. There was no need to rise yet.

The vibration grew stronger. Leaves at the edge of the clearing stirred. A few of the outermost living trunks swayed harder than the residual shockwave from his own arrival should have allowed. Then the sound of something tearing through dense language became audible even without the Eye.

Wukong burst into the clearing like a thrown spear.
