Myriad Heavens: Rise of the Rune God

Chapter 281: Chapter 282: The Watcher’s Preference

The seventeen survivors stepped through the portal of pure script one by one.

The transition was smooth, yet it carried a weight that settled into the bones the moment the last of them crossed. One instant they still stood on the solid stone of the first clearing, residual heat and fractured time still clinging to the air behind them. The next moment, the world changed completely.

They found themselves inside a vast vertical gulf that had no clear ceiling and no true floor. The space stretched upward into dim, endless dark and downward into a glowing expanse of tightly packed script that pulsed with a dull, constant light. Between those two extremes floated countless rune platforms of every size. Some were broad and heavy, islands of dense, layered language that barely drifted. Others were smaller, thinner, slowly rotating or tilting as if testing the balance of whoever might land on them. The air itself felt thicker here, heavier, pressing gently but firmly against skin and lung and spirit as though the entire trial ground resented the presence of living things.

Wukong was the first to speak. Golden eyes narrowed as they tracked the drifting platforms.

”This place already looks annoying,” he said, voice flat with dislike. ”Why can’t anything just stay on the ground where it belongs?”

Soren Vale tilted his head a fraction. Silver light was already moving quietly behind his eyes, reading at a low, continuous level. ”The platforms are not random. Different densities. Different rotation speeds. Some carry far more complex structures than others. Height will matter. So will the way each one connects to the space around it.”

Sylphy kept her four Experts close, the faint silver markings of her bloodline still visible along her arms and throat. Her voice stayed low and steady. ”We stay together for now. We don’t know the rules yet. No one jumps until we understand what we’re walking into.”

Vark the Annihilator said nothing. His gaze moved upward in a single cold sweep, already measuring the highest and most isolated platforms. The temperature near him dropped a fraction even in this new space, frost forming briefly along the edges of nearby floating runes before the oppressive air erased it.

The mysterious woman simply observed. Her regal stillness remained unchanged. She looked at the floating platforms the way someone might look at a familiar room they had already decided how to leave.

Runar kept the Eye of Myriad Truths open. Golden-white light moved in quiet threads across the residual structures in the air, mapping connections, densities, and the faint residual intents that still clung to some of the higher platforms. He did not speak. He was already reading the way the space itself was constructed.

The same emotionless, systematic voice that they had heard on the first floor rang out again from every direction at once, clean and absolute.

”Second Trial: Spatial Escape.

Occupy a floating rune platform.

Once a platform is claimed, a barrier will encase the participant.

Escape the barrier and return to the ground to pass.

Failure to escape within the time limit will result in elimination.”

The announcement ended as cleanly as it began.

Silence held for several heartbeats while the seventeen processed the new rules.

Wukong let out a short breath through his nose. ”So we jump on a floating rock, get locked in a cage, and then have to break out and get back down. Simple. And probably not simple at all.”

Soren nodded slowly. ”Difficulty will scale with the platform. Higher ones will form denser barriers. Choosing too low might be safer in the short term, but it could carry other risks we haven’t seen yet. Choosing too high might trap someone who cannot break free before the time runs out.”

Sylphy spoke to her group in a voice meant only for them. ”Mid-level platforms. Nothing too high. Nothing too crowded. We move together when we move.”

Vark was already in motion. He did not wait for further discussion. A single controlled leap carried him upward with effortless precision, cold annihilation energy gathering at his fingertips before he even landed.

The trial had begun.

Participants began choosing platforms and leaping. Some used pure physical power, launching themselves with explosive force. Others formed temporary rune steps or short-range flight techniques that left fading trails of script in the air. The moment anyone fully landed on a platform, a transparent but extremely dense rune barrier formed around them without warning. It sealed them inside a floating cage of language that glowed with layered, interlocking scripts. The barriers differed from platform to platform—some tight and relatively simple, others vast and filled with shifting, complex patterns that moved like living things.

The difficulty clearly varied with height, rune density, and the complexity of the barrier that appeared.

Deep within the Reliquary, far beyond the reach of any of the seventeen, the Ancient Will observed through countless viewing threads.

It had watched the first trial with patient interest. Now it reviewed the seventeen survivors again, focusing on the three it had already marked as primary candidates.

First was Vark.

The Will examined the cold, destructive way the man had handled the time distortion. Impressive control. Efficient application of runes. His foundation in Annihilation was deep and refined, every structure sharp and complete. But that same completeness made him problematic. His will was too solid, too finished. Possessing or suppressing a vessel with that level of self-contained destruction would be extremely difficult. The Annihilation principle itself would resist any external influence the moment it sensed an intrusion.

The Will rejected him as a vessel without hesitation.

Next was the mysterious woman.

Her passive resistance during the first trial still could not be fully read. The viewing threads slid off her presence the same way the time distortion had. She felt finished. Dangerous. Complete in a way that left no obvious opening. The Will probed once more, carefully, testing the edges of her existence, and still found nothing it could reliably grasp.

She was also rejected.

Then the Will turned its full attention to Runar.

The Eye of Myriad Truths drew most of its focus. Even the Ancient Will’s own perception found the Eye layered and difficult to completely analyze. The golden-white structure was deep, adaptive, and still growing. Runar’s calm reading style was ideal—precise without being rigid, flexible without being weak. He was strong, but he still had ”room.” His foundation was not yet so complete that possession would become impossible. The Eye itself was highly desirable. A tool of that quality would be worth the effort of careful cultivation.

The decision settled cleanly.

Runar would be the primary target.

The Ancient Will began making subtle adjustments to the trial. Barriers near the platforms Runar was likely to choose increased slightly in complexity. At the same time, higher-quality residual intents were quietly placed inside the barrier of the platform he eventually selected. The Will wanted to observe how he solved problems when the difficulty was raised just enough to matter—enough to force genuine effort, but not so much that it risked breaking the vessel it intended to claim.

The viewing threads shifted, focusing more tightly.

Back in the trial space, several people were already sealed inside their barriers and beginning to work.

Runar chose a mid-to-high platform after a short period of careful reading. He leapt cleanly, landed with controlled balance, and the barrier formed around him at once. Dense transparent walls of interlocking script closed in on all sides, the runes shifting and tightening with a faint, almost organic motion. He noticed a slight, unusual density in the structures—higher than the platforms immediately around him—but his expression did not change. He simply sat down in the center of the platform, crossed his legs, and began calmly analyzing the cage with the Eye of Myriad Truths fully open. Golden-white light moved in precise, methodical sweeps across every layer of the barrier.

Wukong chose a nearby platform at almost the same height. The moment both feet touched the surface, a barrier sealed him in as well. He immediately pressed both hands against the inner wall and pushed. The barrier did not move. He pushed harder. Still nothing.

”Yeah,” he muttered, golden eyes narrowing, ”this is definitely going to be annoying.”

Vark claimed one of the highest platforms with effortless precision. The barrier that formed around him was visibly thicker and more complex than most, its scripts layered so densely they almost looked solid. He stood in the center, cold energy already gathering at his fingertips, and began the process of dismantling it with the same annihilating approach he had used before—precise, efficient, and completely without wasted motion.

The mysterious woman selected a high platform as well. She landed lightly, the barrier closed around her, and she simply stood there with the same composed stillness. No visible technique. No rush. Just quiet observation of the cage that now held her, as if she were waiting for something only she could sense.

Across the vertical space, glowing barriers of different sizes and densities floated at various heights. Some participants were already testing the walls with force, hammering or cutting or burning. Others sat and began careful reading, tracing patterns with their eyes or fingertips. A few looked uncertain, clearly re-evaluating the choice of platform they had made as the true density of their cages became clear.

Far below, the dense script ground waited, its dull light pulsing in slow, steady rhythm.

The Ancient Will watched Runar with growing interest. A hidden observation thread, thinner and more subtle than the others, quietly attached itself to him. It would record every structure he used, every adjustment he made, every solution he found. It would measure the growth of the Eye under pressure. It would wait.

Seventeen glowing barriers floated at different heights in the vast dim space.

The true selection process of the Reliquary had begun.
