Myriad Heavens: Rise of the Rune God

Chapter 270: Chapter 271: Digestion

Runar’s hand dropped from the bark. His knees bent. He sat down on the rune-covered ground without thinking, legs folding beneath him, palms pressing flat against the living symbols. The warmth of the ground seeped into his hands but he barely noticed any of that.

Hmmn. It looks like that is the owner of this ruin. And it wasn’t even a ruin in the first place. It was built. Deliberately. Carefully. By someone who treated an entire multiverse like a workbench.

He let the thought settle.

Looks like I will need to find more memory intents. That was incomplete. Fragmented. I got the shape of the man but not the full picture. Not the why. I am really curious about this place. Who builds something like this and then just... leaves, well i already know the answer, but just to be sure.

His mind was racing from what he had just experienced. Not with the memory itself or the mysterious figure that didn’t let him copy finish or how the figure stood before the multiverse like it was a toy or the implications of what he had seen.

He was more immediately concerned with the runes, he could think about the rest later. The runes were more important right now, the fragmented, half-grasped, maddeningly incomplete runes he had stolen, ahem i mean borrowed from that workshop. Nine erasures. Maybe more. And each one had left a splinter of understanding lodged in his comprehension like a shard of glass he could not pull out.

Self-referencing loops. Resonant sub-structures. Negotiation with principles. Temporal self-containment. Recursive definition. Each fragment was incomplete. Each one was missing pieces. But even incomplete, they had shattered assumptions he had carried since the beginning of his rune path. Assumptions he had not even known were assumptions.

’I need to sit with this. Right now. Before the enlightment fades.’

He closed his eyes. The Eye of Myriad Truths dimmed to a low, steady glow. His breathing slowed. His awareness turned inward, sorting through the fragments, placing each one carefully, connecting what could be connected and marking what still needed more pieces.

And then, layered on top of everything else, his mind began reading through the research notes.

And runar thought to himself ’Thankfully that figure left his notes behind. The research itself. If not I might have struggled for some time.’

As he began reading they settled into his awareness like a weight dropping into his chest. Dense. Heavy. Packed with advanced rune theory so tightly compressed that it felt like swallowing a stone.

’Uhn, that’s weird, the information is too dense to read with my spirit force/mind force.’

’Okay, in that case let’s use Eye of Myriad Truths to read.’ So Runar opened his eyes and looked the first page of the book.

And he stopped.

He stared.

He closed it again.

Then opened it again, slower this time. Peering at the first page. The first section. The first three lines.

His brow furrowed.

’...I cannot read this shit.’

’It is written in runic script language. And the symbols are familiar. I can parse every individual rune and could identify every grammatical structure and follow the syntax. But the ideas and the concepts. The leaps of logic between one line and the next. They are assuming a foundation I did not yet have.’

The notes referenced principles that had not been explained because the author considered them obvious. They skipped steps that the author considered trivial. They connected ideas across distances that the author treated as adjacent but that, to Runar, felt like separate continents.

It was like reading the final Chapter of a textbook when you had not yet finished the first volume. Every sentence was technically legible. But the meaning slid past him like water through fingers.

’This is... his personal research. Written for himself. Not for students. Not for anyone else. He wrote this assuming the reader already thinks the way he thinks. And he thinks at a level where principles tremble when he raises his hand.’

A long breath left him.

’I have such a treasure and cant even read it or even comprehend the first page. At least not yet. Not with what I have right now. I just need time.’

The admission did not frustrate him. It clarified things. The notes were not useless. They were simply ahead of him. A destination he could see but had not yet walked far enough to reach. And the fragments he had stolen from the workshop — the self-referencing loops, the resonant structures, the negotiation principles — those were the bridge. If he could integrate those fragments fully, they would raise his foundation enough to read the first page. And then the second. And then the third.

’The fragments are the key. The notes are the map. I need the key before I can follow the map.’

He turned his attention back to the nine borrowed runes. One by one, he worked through them in his mind. Testing each fragment against his existing knowledge. Finding where they fit. Finding where they contradicted what he thought he knew. Finding where they opened doors he had never seen.

The self-referencing loop was the hardest. It went against every structural principle he had ever learned. A rune that sustained itself. That needed no external anchor. That simply was. He turned it over in his mind for a long time. Tested it from every angle. Tried to build a minimal version. Failed. Tried again. Failed differently. Tried a third time.

Something clicked.

Not the full structure. Not even close. But a shadow of it. An echo. Enough to feel the shape of what it could become. Enough to know the direction to grow.

His rune comprehension shifted. Expanded. The suppression around him loosened another fraction. His body felt lighter. His thoughts ran cleaner. The physical cage the ruin had forced him into became slightly less confining.

He opened his eyes. The forest looked different now. Not dramatically. But the Eye showed him new patterns in the nearest trees. Structures he could see but had not been able to see ten minutes ago. The self-referencing principle, even in its embryonic form, let him perceive runes that sustained themselves without external input. And those runes had been invisible to him before.

’The deeper I go, the older the trees. The older the trees, the stronger the intents. That is the path.’

He stood up from his meditative position. His legs were steady. His mind was full.

Then a recorded the name surfaced from his mind in the residual intent. The Rune Sovereign.

’Hmmmn, The Rune Sovereign....So that’s what he was called. Interesting. At the very least. I am certain he is a Paragon. Only a paragon would have that kind of capability, from what I experienced in the memory. And I am fairly certain he has most likely ascended. So I wonder who is running this ruin now. I guess we just have to find out.’

Then he started walking again. Faster than before. His stride lengthened. His pace carried purpose. Not urgency. Direction.

But his mind was not on the walking. The majority of his awareness had turned inward, back to the research notes. He could not read the first page. Not yet. But he could look at it. Study its structure. Identify which concepts he was missing. Mark which fragments from the workshop would fill which gaps. Build a roadmap for his own comprehension. A study plan. A curriculum written by a Paragon who had never intended to teach anyone.

His body walked. His legs carried him forward through the living forest. His Eye scanned the trees automatically, filing new patterns in the background.

But his mind was in the notes. Turning pages he could not yet read. Tracing logic he could not yet follow. Building the foundation that would one day let him understand what the Rune Sovereign had written for himself alone.

A violent spatial tremor rolled through the layer behind him.

Runar paused mid-step. His head turned. His eyes looked back. The mental work paused, not abandoned. Waiting.

Far in the distance, at the very edge of the forest layer, a massive dark shape tore through the boundary of the space. It came in wrong. Too fast. Too uncontrolled. It screamed through the air with a long, drawn-out metallic wail, trailing smoke and broken energy. Then it slammed into the mountains with a force that sent shockwaves rippling outward through the rune-trees. Branches shook. Leaves scattered in golden flurries. The ground trembled once under his feet.

’A ship? It crashed straight into the layer. So that is how they arrived. Not through the gates. Not by reading. By force.’

Immediately afterward, dozens of new auras spilled outward from the crash site. Runar could feel them clearly even from this distance. Weak. Disordered. Panicked. Already turning on one another. Already fighting. Already wasting energy they could not afford to spend in a place that punished ignorance and rewarded patience.

He watched the scene for only a second or two. The Eye of Myriad Truths caught fragments of it automatically. Figures crawling from wreckage. Shouting. Blows exchanged. The thin, brittle feel of suppressed cultivation being thrown around in desperation. Small, pointless violence in the shadow of something far larger.

’Crowded and bloody already. No reason to stay in the outer forest any longer. Every moment spent here is a moment wasted. The real knowledge is deeper. The real memory intents are deeper. And the crowd will only grow from here.’

Then he felt something else in the flood of new auras. One signature. Faint. Buried under the panic and the noise. But familiar. Wild. Chaotic. Burning with a particular kind of irreverent energy he had encountered before.

’Oh. Isn’t this the monkey’s aura. Looks like he found his way here too.’

A small, almost invisible shift in his expression. Not quite a smile. Something close.

’Well. Each of us has our own path to walk. Our own reading to do. We will catch up later.’

He turned forward once more. The Eye of Myriad Truths brightened, its golden-white light sharpening to a finer edge. His pace increased cleanly as he headed toward the older, denser sections of the forest. The sections where the residual intents felt stronger. More complete. More likely to carry the full picture rather than fragments.

Behind him, the outer layer of the living forest began filling with the rising noise of desperate fighting and clashing auras. Shouts. Crashes. The sharp crack of principles being thrown in panic. The sounds grew louder for a few moments, then slowly began to fade as Runar put distance between himself and the chaos. Step by step. Tree by tree. The noise became a murmur. The murmur became silence.

Ahead of him, the living script continued to open under the light of his eye. Layer after layer. Pattern after pattern. The forest breathed around him, ancient and patient, offering its knowledge to the one who knew how to read.

And inside his mind, the research notes waited. Patient as the trees. Dense as the dark bark. Full of answers he was not yet ready to receive.

Runar walked faster. His body moved through the forest. His mind moved through the notes. Both paths led deeper.
