Myriad Heavens: Rise of the Rune God

Chapter 254: Chapter 255: Systems and Preparations

The house felt quieter than usual after they got back from the beach.

No one really talked on the walk home. The sound of the waves still sat in Runar’s ears, mixed with the soft scuff of footsteps on the path. Celestia stayed close, close enough that their shoulders kept brushing. She didn’t say anything, but she didn’t pull away either. Cassia walked a little ahead, quiet in that focused way of hers, like she was already turning the whole conversation over in her head. Nyla kicked at small stones, sending them skittering into the grass. Her usual bounce was gone. She just looked... tired.

Inside, the others gave them room. Jake and Caspian exchanged a look and disappeared toward the study. Lirien and Seraphina moved into the kitchen without a word. Cups clinked softly. No one asked what had been said on the sand. They already knew the shape of it.

Later, when the house finally settled and the last door clicked shut, Runar stayed alone in one of the side rooms. The lights were low. Outside the window the stars of Willith’s universe hung clear and cold. He sat on the edge of the couch, elbows on his knees, and stared at the floor for a long time.

*They’re taking it better than I expected,* he thought. *Doesn’t make it feel any lighter though.*

He rubbed his face with both hands and let out a slow breath.

”Alright,” he muttered to the empty room. ”Enough sitting around.”

First, the clone.

He closed his eyes and reached inward. Information particles shifted under his will, familiar and easy now. He didn’t rush it. He shaped the separation carefully, drawing out a complete copy of himself — body, soul, memory, everything. There was no tearing feeling, just a clean split, like one flame becoming two.

In less than a heartbeat the new presence solidified in the middle of the room.

The clone opened its eyes and looked at him.

For a second they just stared at each other. The link settled into place with quiet certainty. No lag. No weird delay. Everything the main body knew, the clone knew. Everything the clone would feel from now on, the main body would feel too.

The clone gave a small, almost wry smile.

”I’ll stay,” it said, voice identical to his. ”They won’t be alone. You know that, right?”

Runar nodded. ”Yeah. Keep the link clear. If anything happens—”

”I’ll call. Or you’ll already know before I do.” The clone shrugged. ”Go do what you need to do. I’ve got this side.”

It stepped back and leaned against the wall, arms loosely crossed, already settling into the role. When the main body left, the family would still have him — the same face, the same voice, the same stubborn care. Just not the version that needed to keep moving forward.

Runar turned his attention deeper.

The system that had been bound to his soul since the very beginning of his journey lay open in front of his perception now. In the early years it had been a black box — useful, annoying, and full of secrets. After he stepped into the Multiversal realm the veils had mostly fallen away. He could see the whole structure: every layer, every pathway, every restriction someone had woven into it.

He poked at it carefully.

*Guidance modules. Resource channels. Growth acceleration. Soul anchors.*

All of it built to help reincarnators survive and climb. It fed on certain kinds of progress and handed out structured support in return. Some parts were elegant. Some parts felt deliberately locked.

A recent conversation floated back up in his mind.

He had stood with Willith in the quiet space outside her membrane before coming home. After telling her he was leaving the sector and confirming he still planned to keep their deal about reincarnators, he had brought up the system.

”I can rip it out,” he had said. ”Completely. I can see how it’s put together now.”

Willith had watched him for a moment, thoughtful.

”From what I studied at the Multiversal Will Management Academy,” she said, ”systems like yours carry a kind of special status. I don’t know the exact details — it wasn’t part of the normal curriculum because it doesn’t really concern Universe Wills. But the records suggested it might matter once someone reaches the Multiversal Centers. You might want to keep it until you understand what that status actually means.”

”You can’t tell me more?”

She had shaken her head. ”You’ll have to find out yourself. Some things only open when you’re standing in the right place.”

Sitting in the dim room now, Runar exhaled through his nose.

*I still don’t like something this deep in my soul when I didn’t build it.*

*But tearing it out completely might slam a door I don’t even know exists yet.*

He chose the middle path.

One by one he cut the active connections. Threads of monitoring influence. Pathways that let the system pull from or push into his soul. Residual feedback loops. He worked slowly and precisely, feeling each link go quiet. The system’s presence dimmed, then settled into dormancy — still there, still whole, but no longer able to do anything on its own. Like a sealed box sitting in the back of a room.

When the last connection was isolated, the system went silent.

*Good enough,* he thought. *If that status ever matters, I’ll still have it. Until then, it stays quiet.*

With that done, he turned to the knowledge the examination had given him.

If he could understand a system this completely, he could build new ones.

He started with Celestia.

Runar reached through their connection and felt the shape of her soul and foundation. Unity Cycle. Steady. The kind of person who looked for balance even when things got messy. He shaped the system carefully — supportive, not bossy. Something that would help her deepen her understanding of harmony between forces, offer quiet guidance when she asked for it, and never try to steer her against her own will. The structure settled cleanly. He felt a soft ripple of acceptance as it lined up with the path she was already walking.

*This one grows with her,* he thought. *Not ahead of her.*

Next was Cassia.

Her mind was precise, always cutting things into pieces so she could see how they worked. The system he built for her focused on information processing, principle dissection, and strategic insight. It didn’t try to change the way she thought. It just made the way she already thought sharper and clearer. Clean access to structured knowledge. Tools for taking complicated systems apart without getting lost in them. When the binding finished, he felt the quiet, almost immediate click of integration — like the system had simply found the empty slot waiting for it.

Nyla’s system had more of an edge.

Combat intuition. Fast adaptation. Growth that spiked hard under pressure. He tailored it to her personality and the way she fought, then deliberately built in limits so it wouldn’t push her into stupid risks just because the fight felt good. When the binding settled, he felt a brief, familiar spark of her energy jump in response — restless, alive, already poking at the new edges like she couldn’t help herself.

He didn’t stop with the three of them.

Jake and Lirien got systems built for steady, reliable progress. Reinforcement of foundations. Slow, solid expansion without strain. Paths that matched the grounded lives they had already lived. Caspian and Seraphina’s systems leaned toward refined control and long-term stability, the kind of quiet strength that lasted. Each binding was careful. Each system was something he fully understood and fully controlled. None of them had the foggy, half-hidden nature his original system had once carried.

By the time the last system settled into place, the night had gotten deep.

The clone still stood near the wall, quiet and ready. Runar’s own system core stayed isolated and silent inside his soul. The family now carried personal systems that would keep supporting them long after he was gone.

He looked toward the hallway that led to the bedrooms.

*They’re going to wake up tomorrow and the systems will already be there.*

*Cassia will notice first. She always does. Nyla will poke hers until something interesting happens. Celestia will just accept it and keep moving like it’s the most natural thing in the world.*

The weight of leaving was still sitting in his chest, quiet but heavy. The practical work was finished, though. The clone would stay. The systems would help. The link would keep him tied to them no matter how far the main body went.

He stayed sitting in the dim room for a while longer, listening to the small night sounds of the house — the soft creak of wood settling, the faint rustle of wind outside, the distant rhythm of someone turning over in their sleep.

Tomorrow, or maybe the day after, he would start the next part of the journey.

For now he just sat there, letting the new baseline of his existence settle, and tried not to think too hard about how quiet the house was going to feel once he was actually gone.
